I would get a Fryette Power Station. Hands down the best and you can run your amp at bedroom level. It is so versatile. Once you get one you will not want anything else.
I have the SD Powerstage 700 running Helix Floor (When I'm not playing my Mr Scary modded Mesa Badlander haha) through 2 Mesa oversized 412 cabs, it packs a punch but does seem to be lacking something. I may just buy 2 of the ISP Stealths to power both cabs after hearing this! Thanks for the video!
I just bought a soldano x88 ir and need a good power amp so this helps but I did notice KSR just dropped a 100w pwr amp with midi so might just do that whoop!!!
I bought the big-boy powerstage when it came out to power cabs in stereo. It felt weird to play in mono. Everything had a bit of harshness. A lot of happy owners though!
@@TONEWARSgearshow Hoping you soon get your hands on the limited run Mark IIC+. Watching a few demos I kept thinking what will Jarrod get out of this amp.
Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I've been really trying to up my game regarding thumbnails lately as well. I'm so glad you liked it.
I have a pa50, no other solution has come close to what it does for me, short of a rack tube power amp. The powerstage with cab, waza tae power section with cab/laney frfr 2x12, ascr 12 friedman, revv d40 through fx return(thus sounds great but having the controls on the front of the pa50 and the size make it the clear winner) pa50 everyday all day. I use the qc and run no ir out of 3/4 to the pa50 and ir on output 1/2 to the pa. Great master volume on the pa50 too.
I use the PS170 and 200 with my Axe Fx Ultra, Axe FX II, FM3 and ToneX. They all sound great through but - what adds a lot of life to it is when I add the Guptech pdEQ pedal right after the FX unit going into the poweramp. It provides it the much needed life. Absolutely love it!
Pedal Baby 100 owner here, I can't speak to the sound qualities of any other power amp on the market but I also have used the power section of my EVH 5150 III 50w 6L6 head and my USA PRS Archon 50's power section (both 6L6GC) and the Orange does well to compare. Some power amps like the SD Powerstage are class D while the ISP and the Pedal Baby are class A/B which is alleged to give a more "organic" feel that you associate with tubes; yet it is tubeless. Edit: For context I use my Pedal Baby 100 to power a Friedman IR-X tube preamp and an Eleven Rack, sometimes a HeadRush MX5.
@@PSYRE_OFFICIAL My reason for asking is because the clean channel on an Orange Super Crush is just the Pedal Baby with an FX Loop, and I'm a proud owner of a Super Crush. The Super Crush and Pedal Baby also have the added benefit that you can push the input to tighten things up, whereas units like the ISP just make things louder, or clip in an unappealing way. I have a Joyo Oxford Sound, which I run into the clean channel extra hot, and I also boost the front of that with a Precision Drive clone. Retains the usual low mid growl of the orange, but gets tight like an EVH 5150. I often double track that with the amp's dirt channel, boosted with the same OD, to rather good effect. I was just curious to see other people's thoughts.
On of the main things is that the KSR and ISP Stealth are both Class A/B amplifiers, while the Seymour Duncan Powerstage is a Class D poweramp. A lot of people have similar perceptions of what you stated regarding the Orange Pedal Baby 100 vs. the Powerstage. If you have the chance, try to compare that also to the Powerstage.
Thanks for commenting. That's exactly why I did this video. I've seen so many people using the SD power station and I think they're missing out on better stuff.
The ISP power amp has been around for aling time. The big brother to that one i ran for years. I do like my pedal baby, Orange did a really great job with it. From what i understand, they made it an A/B class power amp with it. Not much in I/O options, a in for pedals and out for running cabs, no line out for running it straight in your interface.
The one I'm using is the Orange Pedal Baby, I like it, I have compared it to real tubes, obviously not AS good, but I can't afford another one, and so far I am really enjoying it 😂 I'm using a pedalboard with the Tonex one as the source of the tone.
Is that KSR the Dunkies N' Demos special? As far as tube power amps for a modeler/preamp go; I love my EVH Stealth 50 as a power amp or my Fryette LX. I have never wanted the PowerStage despite it having a generally good feature set.
I run a hybrid rig with a 5150 stealth and my quad cortex... I ended up getting the KSR cause I wanted a way to accurately run the pre amp captures from my QC... It definitely does that in spades! Of course it leads to more tweaking and less playing, which makes me lean towards either playing into my real amp or using neural DSP plugins thru my monitors for lower bedroom level volumes
I have a Duncan Powerstage 200, it's alright- it's also got a presence control, which might be the frequency control you're missing from the 170 in this demo. With the amount of gain going on, EQ is really everything. Weirdly, it seems like a lot of metal guys would appreciate the quicker transients and less compressed feel of solid state, especially for rhythm work. I suppose the real question becomes, is it powerful enough, and does it work for you? The big drawback of SS amps for decades wasn't just how they sound or feel, but that a "50 watt" SS amp is barely enough for a coffeehouse gig, whereas a 50 watt tube amp is loud enough for almost any non-stadium situation. It'll move the speakers!
I run all my preamp pedals (NATAS, CERES,Heavy Hatchet,IR-X…) through my PA50. I also run through it a JMP-1, a Syn-1 and a HX Stomp XL. I have two other Power amps: an E840 for my E530 and a Syn 5050 for my Syn 2. And finally I have 3 powerstation 2a And I know for sure that i will never use any SS Power Amp.
I run an ISP Theta into a Quilter block 200. Sounds and feel very good to me....but not as good as the Theta running into my Marshall dual mono bloc 100. That amp is a tank. It never leaves the studio.
Hey Jarrod, I wanted to throw another option in the ring that Kyle Bull turned me on to. It’s the Blackstar Amped 1. I’m not normally a big Blackstar guy but man this thing is incredible. It has different tube voicings which really sound good (The EL34 and 6L6 in particular). The feel and sound are both excellent, I actually preferred it over my Fryette PS100.
Did you ever try the peavey bandit redstripe? It's a great amp. I use a preamp pedal into the FX return and speaker out into a 4x12. Sounds and feels like a tubeamp but much tighter and can get very loud.
Thanks again for the video. Would you guesstimate that the Seymour Duncan power stage 700 would sound similar to the 170? (I'm guessing yes for the most part) Would this be worth a comparison?
@TONEWARSgearshow thanks. I'm definitely selling, picking up the isp, and trying to save up for the ksr. The dollar is terrible right now so I'm hoping it improves
Hey Captain overdrive, I use the Seymore duncan powerstage 700 Class D amp for my modelers my Axefx III, Helix rack, But for my vintage preamps (ADA MP1 3 tube mod, Rocktron Prophecy, Digitech DSP2101, ISP Theta Pro DSP & My Synergy Modules I use a Mesa Boogie rectifier 2-100 Poweramp. That KSR sounds great,
Using a PS200 with my Tonex pedal. It is definitely missing something. Still sounds good, but I'd love a proper tube poweramp. If I wasnt just playing by myself I'd get something better. (Also own a EVH EL34 Iconic)
The short of it: class AB sounds better for a lot of applications than class D. The exception to that is Thomas Blug's Amp 1 which shapes the preamp tone going into the power section with a "nano" tube, which acts as a filter and dynamicly changes the signal. Quilter does something similar, just with solid state. While class D puts out impressive numbers and does really pump out more wattage, it is not necessarily nice to listen to.
i have a Nano cortex connected to a Electroharmonix magnum 44 pedal to my 1x12 mesa cab, no complaints lol i have 3 real tube amps so im sure what im hearing. great video btw.
I use a tonex that goes into joyo bamTamp xl zombieII. I have a Ibanex TS9 in front of the tonex than a delay and put it into the return of the effects loop and the joyo becomes a preamp into a cabinet then mike it. sounds good and the joyo amp only costs 199.99.
I have that one. And it is great. But I've been coveting the KSR for well over a year. That's the next step, It takes 3 kinds of tubes! Match the digital amp model or profile with the tube type that came from that amp!
The power stage is Class D, so it will never feel right or sound good because filtered PWM does not produce quality sound. Saying you can't hear the difference in a mix is a cop-out for using inadequate gear. The power stage can't produce the mids that the other two can and will easily get lost in a dense mix.
Could you try the ISP against the Powerstage 200 that has presence knob? maybe turning up a little that knob sounds more like the ISP, or maybe not, i would love that comparison
I would love to see a comparison using a Fractal with advanced tube power amplifier modeling. Wondering if that would pick up the slack and equal them out? KSR seems killer though.
Yeah…..the PowerStage sounds very choked and muffled compared to the other two. From this side of RUclips, I prefer the ISP over the KSR. It sounds a little tighter. But the KSR would slay in the room I think……..
Thanks for the video, i have a powerstage 200 and i always felt that. How much louder is the Duncan powerstage 200 compared to the ISP 180? because i'm thinking on selling the Duncan and buy the ISP.
Tubes and transformers give it that percussive punch to the chest like chugs. Now I want that Revv pedal, was disapponted with the IR-J pedal for $600. Are both the Duncan and ISP using the same class of solid state power amp? There are a few different types,Class D,G, A/B etc
@MKRISING75 for $600, pretty overpriced, the ir-x are on sale for $425 new, $300 used. I'm not using the ir stuff anyway. Guitar-pedal-powerstation-cab. Christ, for $600 more, I'd get the jel 20 head. I get it's a plexi/jcm 800 style amp, lower gain amp that needs a od pedal to take it to the next level. Didn't friedman mod these amps to give it more gain. I'll give the irx a try.
