And the original creator of the Street, Tony Warren was very, very gay and quite open about it during the 60s when the rest of society... wasn't so open. I met John around 10 years ago, when I'd just come in from being homeless and in the middle of a drug addiction and had a 'work trial' at a well known retailer. He came in as a customer and had a proper chat with me for about 20 minutes, gave me some great advice and was just a generally lovely, friendly, down to Earth man. Probably helped me more than he knows!

Nick Cotton, a great character in an otherwise woeful soap with great quotes such as "give us a fag ma" and "Where's your purse you old bag" and "give us a score I've run out of beer"
It was humorous because so many people believed it was really him being the bad guy, so refreshing to see what a charming charismatic chap he really is
Some 30 years ago, I was walking away from my car on Richmond Green. A guy had just parked and got out of his car. I told him he had left his lights on. The chap was so pleasant and thanked me profusely. I was taken back to find it was "Nasty Nick". This changed my view of him. What a nice guy!

I met John briefly at Oxford services a few years ago, I was servicing a coffee machine in the petrol station and could see out on to the forecourt. A Nissan Qashqai pulled up and this guy gets out to fill up and I thought, he looks familiar, then I realised it was "nasty Nick" from Eastenders. He entered the building to pay for his fuel and as I was right by the door working on the machine he looked at me and smiled and I embarrassingly said, "alright Ma!" ...John grinned at me shaking his head and walked off to pay. I said to him as he left the building, sorry, I couldn't resist. He was a total gent about it and said oh its ok I get it all the time.

I've watched EastEnders from the start. The character of Nick was never gay nor intended to be. You can't just erase history, erase the backstory, and ignore the character portrait. Its just a joke whoever is running the show.

True; every episode will start with a sinister black man and a poor white victim. Then the plot twists comes and the real victim is the black man and the white victim is manipulating the situation for his own sinister gain. Come the end of the episode the viewer is left slapping their own head and checking their unconscious racism.
He`s a good lad is John i went to Butlins for a 70s rock weekend and he was playing with his band who themselves were the band of Gary Holt the fellow from Auf Wiedersehn

EastEnders is not real at all these days, ordinary eastenders can not live the lives portrayed in the modern show and gives a false impression of life in the east end.
Also there is too many white people in Eastenders, its strange for such a woke show to have so many white characters in the show when that isn't accurate today.

Moved to Australia in 2002 and getting ‘UKTV’ to watch Eastenders was a top priority for the whole family.

It's a tragic state of affairs that Nick (Johnny) never received a BAFTA for the delivery of those lines.

Used to watch Neighbours when I were young, but it has now gone very strange. Started on Home and Away a couple years ago. It's great. Can't think of anything woke in it.
I haven't seen Home and Away/Neighbours since flathead and Madge Bishop were in them. The early 90's probably.

Home And Away went downhill when Brax left, then all the other great characters started to leave. It’s unwatchable now.
I only ever caught snippets of Eastenders when the wife used to watch. I never rated John. But my estimation of him has gone through the roof. I'd vote for you any day Nick, err, sorry, John.
