Great explanation! Two key points from similar builds by others: 1. Cover the inlet to keep insects and debris out. 2. Place the entire drum outside the pen with only the nipple sticking through the fence. That way the pigs will not be able to destroy it , yet still access the water as needed. General consensus is that when given the chance to be destructive, most pigs will be, so take away the opportunity right from the get-go! PS: I might also consider another cross brace above the X to provide addition bracing above the intersection and so further support the lower part of the cross bracing legs.

Add some apple cider vinegar. It will help control algae and it's good for the animals. I think this was a great idea. The pigs will figure out the nipple fairly quickly. I switched my chicken and duck waterers to nipple waterers and it only took them a day or two to figure it out. Pigs are smarter than chickens and ducks...just saying. lol (I loved having poultry and miss having them. Maybe someday I will again.)

Yes and these pigs love ACV, they drink it straight before we are able to fill up their water sometimes.

You could periodically set a kernel or two of corn up on the water nipple and I think they'd catch on quick.

A word to the wise, find an old rug or something to cover the barrel with, I had one in my back garden and it only lasted 3 yrs sitting in the sun and the whole side cracked out from UV damage. Another option is buy a cover for a barrel size BBQ grill but a rug is cheaper and it will keep the water from heating up in the sun.
Sorry but you won't be able to fill the barrel full unless you have an air bleed in the top. It won't fill past the top of the fill fitting in the side of the drum unless you can exhaust the air pocket.
If you made a cross board with a tight fitting hole across the front with just the nipple sticking out it will help keep the piggies from breaking the nipple off. I would also find a vented cap for the fill port to keep bugs from breeding in the barrel and making the pigs sick if they ingest the larvae. Mosquito larvae is the cause of heart worm and they breed in standing water.
I would also suggest a couple of diagonal braces front to back to keep the pigs from collapsing the stand while pushing from the front while drinking. There's a channel with a pet pig living in someone's house and the issues they've encountered over the years like flipping their stove over while looking for something to eat in the kitchen, don't under estimate their strength and will power when they want something.
All that scratching they're doing is what I was talking about when you first got them. Get a sheet or 2 of steel lath for putting concrete on walls and make them a scratching wall somewhere in their pen, they'll love you for it. It comes in 2.5ft x 8ft sheets and you could just wrap it around a couple bales of hay and make it stationary with a piece of rebar driven through the bails into the ground so they don't play soccer with it and move it as you move their pen.

Pigs are a pain where a pill won’t reach when it comes to destroying things.
I’ve seen a water system similar to this but the barrel is outside of the fence and a longer metal pipe is all the pigs have access to inside the pen. The pipe was also stabilized by mounting aBoard on two T posts and threading the drinker pipe through a hole in the board.
Fun project that you can tweak and make it work as needed.

Without using the nipple on a pressurized system I had to remove the screen and open it up with a high flow valve instead of a low flow or medium flow Valve to get enough water out when the pigs were needing some They drank a lot My system is similar but I used an IBC tote and painted it green to not get algae

Peanut butter on the nipple works! Try a tarp over the barrel before you paint it, seeing the inside seems like a good idea to know when to clean it and the tip about the ACV is also a good one to aid health and deter alge.

Nate, great video that explains how you built this. I enjoyed you showing tye step by step process. Where did your source the barrels? Locally here in greene county, or online? Your attentiveness to keeping your animals and eventually your food safe from potential harmful contaminants is admirable.

The bottom of the legs support should have been put on the inside, no spacer needed.
Also the rear of the barrel should be higher by 1/2" - 1" so all water slopes towards the nipple.
Paint or use the blue barrels blue = 💧 water. And keeps algae down.
I only use black barrels for water I want 🔥 hot. The black draws in the sun's heat.
You will also need a screen or cover for your large fill pipe or you will have bugs. Beetles & mosquitoes larvae in your water barrel.

Most I have seen use this type setup apply a bit of peanut butter to the nipple for a day or 2 just to get the pigs to learn what they are supposed to use the contraption for. Haven't saw many get by with just throwing it in and letting the pigs figure it out, 1 guy I knew did get by ok but his was a case of the piglets imitating mom who learned to use it via peanut butter .

Never put a barrel sidewaya before. To keep pigs from destroying the nipple connector we use 6 to 12 in long, 1/2 in galv nipples and galv connectors to step from 3/4 fitting to half inch size of nipples (galv and pig). That way I keep the barrel on the Outside of their fencing because our 500lb Tamworth breeder boar destroys everything.
