  • How we are keeping our RV cool in the summer heat. Nate puts up reflectix insulation on the roof of the RV to keep the summer sun from heating up the RV.

The best thing you can do is get those inexpensive shade cloths like you use on green houses over the top. Put some poles up on the corners and sides of the RV and suspend the shade cloth over it. You need the air flow between the shade cloth and the top of the RV, and it will leave room for your ac to be able to vent properly. You will see a huge difference.

One problem that you run into is the wind. Where I'm at in Nevada, the wind gets whipping through here at 60+ mph at times. I've already learned the hard way trying to do carports made of tarps, and if they're not anchored down something fierce, goodbye cover.

That's always the best bet but what it costs in material alone is very expensive let alone having it done professionally.
I'm a disabled Veteran and I just can't afford the cost of the materials otherwise I'd just put it up myself. Here in Arizona our temps hit 110-120 degrees and it destroys everything.

just saw this- no I dont. But I took 10ft lengths of 1" (maybe bigger, it was a while back) and cut them in half, then joined all the halfs together with PVC T joints until I had 2 38ft lengths of PVC. Then I took 2 7ft pieces and put them across both ends so I had a giant rectangle. I straightened them out as best I could and used paracord to try and keep them from arching out when I then added the 10ft lengths of PVC in an arch from one long side to the other at all the t joints. Attached the fabric, got some curious friends to help push/pull the whole thing ontop of the RV, and then secured it as best I could with more paracord.

Happy you found something that works for y'all. It is so much harder to cool down in the heat. I would much rather have to add a sweater or something. I am amazed at how much you are getting done in the heat. Please take care and not overdo it. Maybe for next year you could get one of those aluminum carports...roof held up with poles. I have seen them over campers so maybe it is efficient and perhaps a tarp going down the side to keep the sun off the wall. Just a thought. Also, I'd give some thought to a barn cat...they can surely help with the mice. Y'all take care and have a Blessed day.

In the fall wash the roof really well and put a couple of coats of Cool Coat on. It won't help as much as the insulation but will help. I had one of those sky lights and even with the shade on it the heat poured into the trailer. I bought some art board and put over the shade it helped a bit but finally stuffed a pillow up there. This is one brutal summer we are at 108f Thankfully I am not in the trailer!

I used reflextix on the roof of my 32 ft motorhome. I used those flat cement blocks similar to patio blocks to secure instead of tape.
I have 40 mph winds regularly, and the blocks don't budge.
Hurricanes and tornadoes, of course, are a threat where I live in south Texas, but I'm leaving in my motorhome if anything more than category 1 winds are forecasted.
But then again, if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans....
My results are impressive along with the windshield being cover on the outside with Reflectix. The 12,000 btu Coleman air-conditioner keeps the inside at 82° with an outside temperature of 100°
    (Inside humidity is 50%!)
Prior to the installation of the insolation (see what I did there?) My inside temperature was 95° with humidity at 64°
My 12 year old Chihuahua Lulu and I spent time riding around in the car during afternoon hours, but that was ridiculous.
If you think 82° is too warm for inside temperatures, trust me, it's not at all!
    Not at 50° humidity.
Now my Chihuahua lays under a blanket...poor Lulu can't win....
My air-conditioner actually cycles off and on now! My electric bill is almost 1/2!

No, mice will get in if there is feed around. You need to build a solid wooden box big enough for the bags to go in, with an airtight lid. After you put all of the bags in, then drop a few moth balls in the corners around the bags. That will keep all normal critters away.

You can free range the pigs if you have enough out there for them to graze on, but a lot of people find small local grocery stores, cafes, juice places, etc., that have a lot of leftover produce they have to throw out and arrange to take their scraps. you could put a tarp over the reflectix just to reduce the uv rays and maybe make it last longer. get the tarps that block all UV rays, not the normal ones. BTW if you ever buy pop up tents like lots of people use when butchering, make sure you buy one that blocks all UV rays as well....makes a huge difference in the temperature of the tent and also reduces eye strain.

We use reflectix on our RV as well. We just use ours on our windows, but we hardly remove it because of that. So there is a trade off. I think that is the most bang for your buck. Another big help would be a tarp above to provide shade or get closer to some trees that can provide something similar. We have 2 air conditioners in our rv. That would ultimately be best, but that would be valuable money you could use for the house.

Why not store the extra feed in the house porch, that is closed in.
Create another "roof" suspended from poles at each of the trailer corners, and then secure the poles to two points in the ground. It would be nice if it could be secured to a tree, if it is close enough that could also extend your living area in shade.

Nate, just a suggestion, perhaps if you have a supermarket near by speak to them and ask them if you can collect their food waste maybe twice for the pigs, but if you do make sure your regular and bring back the drums in a clean state. If there are a couple coffee shops see if you and collect their used coffee grinds and add them to your compost pile. Good luck this should help with reducing your feed bill, looking to your next pod cast.

I used that reflective material in the windows in the front of our motor home. Customized three panels to snap in at the top of the windshield and side windows, this worked so well.

Hi Nate. Great job on the RV once you have done it all it should make the hot days more bearable. Let’s hope it last for a while.

You could always build a large wooden box with a hinged top and put your bags of feed in, but mice can climb the cider blocks to get their dinner

I agree Shade cloth would be easier. You can get one that blocks off most of the sun.

I like the Reflective cover. For now, it's workable. The future longevity of your RV an RV Covered Port (ie.. Car Port) would make a huge difference in all weather conditions. Wishing you all the best!

We actually just put reflectix in the windows of our west-facing bay window and it has REALLY helped with the heat. We've been having 100+ degree days for weeks now in Arkansas and anything helps the A/C not work so hard!

You might consider four potted trees at the black end of camper. Something like tall juniper or cypress to deflect sun. Or a shade structure of some sort like shade cloth sail.

Hi Nate now look out for the breakdown in the water if you're catching it to use, the sun and rain is going to beat on it but good job.

You need a cat for the inevitable rodents that will find the feed.

Sorry, the mice will get to your bags, your barrels are a smart option, feed gets stale if mice open them

Love reflectix...thanks for answering my question (you knew we'd wanna know) about how many bags would fit in that barrel...love those licking barrels...you need some more of them...I think mice can climb cement blocks cause it's textured...maybe put some flat metal (like old stove pipe) over the blocks...also I think mice can jump high...put another row or two of blocks
