Speed is very important. Im 6'1 and 170lbs. I have the same bench max as you. My best was 49 with the 12lb and 42 with the 16lb. I feel that plyometrics and quick feet drills are great for improving your shot put
The first high school shot putter to really move the 12 pound shot record up big time was Dallas Long of North Phoenix high school in 1958. At the start of that year the prep record was 64.something. Dallas kicked it up to 69 something. But that was only the start for him that year. He was invited to compete at the Compton relays against Parry Obrien, who held the world record at 63-2 and other good throwers throwing the 16 pound shot. Dave Davis, a sophomore at USC, got off a big throw of 60-6 which at that time was an NCAA college record. He was super happy and was dancing all over the place. Dallas Long, who was still in high school, had the next throw and popped one out to 61-3 to take a 2nd place behind Obrien's winning 62-7, making the 16lb best of a high schooler better than any college thrower in history. I know because I was in the stands for that meet and saw it with my own eyes. The next year, Long, as a USC freshman tied Obrien's world record of 63-2. Great memories.
yes it is true...Carter threw the 16lb shot the next day after the high school record and it went over 67 feet...he later threw over 71 feet and won the silver medal in the 84 olympics. if not for going on to an all pro career in th NFL he would have thrown even further.
Ended my highschool shotput career with a pr of 50'1 and I only have one event that can take me to state.Didnt like it that much but now I'm missing it already.
crazy thing about carter he had a tiny squat and bench in h.s. It was his explosiveness that got that shot out so far . I reade in an article on macthrow he benched around 280. To throw over 60ft these days you need to be in the mid 300's plus.
Great glide technique, look how fast he gets the lower body feet and legs in position to drive the hips and butt forward ahead of the upper body, AWESOME!...take notes of this form you young up coming shot putters.
Dude was a beast for sure there is a kid from Missouri cantwell a sophomore threw 74-9 if he gets stronger he could break it he spins also throws discus over 200 ft keep your eye on him Carter is a legend for sure
Im a freshman in highschool i suck at discus but pretty good in shot put. I shotput 40'8" and only throw the discus about 80'. I am the second best in my highschool.... a senior throws 46'.
@TheZeeland1 definitely not bad. my first year of shot i was 16 and threw a 45, this upcoming year is my second year and right now i'm throwin around 51, 52. just keep at it and hit the weight room plenty, keep throwing in the off season and you'll get some huge throws sooner or later.
@Paperpirate456-There are some shot analysis vids on you tube, showing the spin and the glide, those will really help too. The shoes reduce friction in both making it so the spin and glide are smooth and the momentum is not stopped. Good luck.
its a 12 pounder and hes only a senior in highschool 81'3" with the glide is legend bro and even if nick vena beats him he will always be the best hs shotputter with glide.
72-2¼, Hayden Baillio, Whitesboro 71-0½i, Stephen Saenz, Rio Grande City there are 2 but this guy is a freshman throwing 56 56-1, Alex Garza, Rio Grande City
no not at all , he wasnt on steroids. he was just strong and a hard worker. if u search for his name on google youll see some information on him and what hes up to now.
Kepler Auguste he’s up to helping his daughter win An Olympic Gold Medal. What a great job, what a moment as a family and a father who was a silver medalist , who played football cause that’s where the money for his family was. Is a legend and his daughter took the medal on her last throw and took it away from a kiwi giant. !!! what a destined moment for a family.
@sampsonelectro2224 I've been wondering the same thing. Watching Ryan throw is an amazing thing to behold. It makes what Carter did in '79 seem just that much more amazing. I think Ryan can do it, but getting that next 4 feet is not going to be easy.
im a freshman this year starting my first year of trach n field hope i do good .... im 5'11 and 230lbs and i bench 215 and deadlift 330 i think ill do good.
So im a highschool sophmore and our seson will not start till february but my PR Freshmen year was 41feet 1 inch. i am currently training(off season lifting and conditioning) im throming a constant 45feet as of now. if anyone has any tips or workouts that will help me they are greatly obliged.
I'm new to shot put, my first year. I throw on average 33ft and my personal record is 36 ft. I'm throwing a 12lb shot put but, I don't know if thats the right weight for me, im in intermediate age 16. If someone could tell me if im throwing the right weight, it would be greatly appreciated.
and our highschool hits weights by the way. we have won state 2 years in a row and probobly will this year again. like i said im a freshman and i bench 265, and i squat 365.
I throw about 25-30 feet, 1st time with 12 pound ball out of the power position. I'm a junior in HS and I have just started Track and Field. 1st timer... I still have yet to get the glide down , I can barely do it.
i agree with u 70footer Carters world record will stand after until Nick Vena graduates lol. i gotta find out more about Michael Carter though , i heard he went onto playing football or maybe my facts are wrong. and i dont remember if it was in one of ur videos or someone else that someone said he could throw the 16 pound about 67 feet or so when he was still a senior which is even more amazing. i mean if he continued on that record streak he would have been the Olympics world record holder!
yea im 14 and i throw a 12 lb. shotput 38'4. this is the first year that i threw. it sucks tho cuz my highschool has 5 50 foot throwers right now. for anybody on here. its kimberly highschool in wisconsin for people who are curious
haha im 16 my junior year first time throwing with a 12 this season without practicing and it was a 37footer today i just threw 39feet 6inches on stand throw ive only been putting since last year!. . . and the song is by Creed
im freshman in highschool i benched 295 squat about only 380 cause if bad knees but hit 46ft 4 with a glide n now im practicin spin got 45ft 9 with it in 1 week of practicin dont know how i match up to other freshman in highschool
im 15, a sophomore, girl and im throwing 35. im hoping to win state this year with a spin and break 40 ft. and then my senior year i hope to break 50 or more
damn carter's technique is soo good. I don't think people realise how efficient his technique was, it rivals ulf's , if anything I think his h.s technique on that throw is better than ulfs 21.37 from the top gliders video.
Hes a freak no reason to explain... Like michael phelps winning gold medals at a young age when people have been trying to do win a olympic gold medal with 10-20 years training.
of course he is a regular human being its just he was a inspiration to all younger thrower like take for instance nick vena he is throwing 72 feet and hes a sophomore in high school so it would be incredible if nick beat 81 feet 3 and a quarter inch throw senior year
this record has stood for almost 30 years and NO ONE has come within 5 feet of it....my guess would be Nick Vena will be pretty great but this record will still stand after he graduates.
Ryan Crouser, the current Olympic champ threw over 77 feet in high school. At 25 he's already the greatest American Shot putter not to fail a drug test lol.
this record was set in 1979 at the golden west invitational..i saw carter throw 79'10 in fort worth the same year..no high schooler has thrown over 76'2" since 1990 brett noon nick vena...is the best i have seen since...but hips are too slow to get this record
nick is going to get even better, i mean if hes hitting 72 feet at his sophmore year. thats only 10 feet and 2 years to make that PR. but yea ur right .
@ozzy91792 The food that we eat, your technique, and your coach has a role in what your doing wrong. Some coaches know more than other coaches, but it also falls on the athlete to do his/her own technique training. Dont just practice when you have to. Practice when your not doing anything important, watch video comparisons and video tape yourself also.
My bench is around 275 I weigh about 200lbs and I throw just over 60ft. TECHNIQUE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANYTHING
Height and Speed means something too. You can have perfect technique and be really strong but not throw far because of speed
Speed is very important. Im 6'1 and 170lbs. I have the same bench max as you. My best was 49 with the 12lb and 42 with the 16lb. I feel that plyometrics and quick feet drills are great for improving your shot put
I'm 5'6 160 and I throw 48 with the 12 and 40 with the 16. TECHNIQUE
My bench is 305 and I can only throw 45
@@dashiellbrown6735 if you bench 305 you can throw the 16 40 feet standing. Unless you're paralyzed
damn... this is the best shot put technique i've seen, he is amazing.

I wish someone could remaster this footage. One of the most untouchable records in all of sports.
That's a great idea
I think Jackson Cantwell has a good SHOT at besting it. (pun intended)
By far the best glider I've ever seen.
I heard he could power clean 400 in high school. Seeing that explosiveness in the ring I wouldn't doubt it.
yes it is true...Carter threw the 16lb shot the next day after the high school record and it went over 67 feet...he later threw over 71 feet and won the silver medal in the 84 olympics. if not for going on to an all pro career in th NFL he would have thrown even further.
Probably would of had the world record at some point.
what a surprise a giant shot put thrower. shot put throwers arre always the most relaxed and nicest people
Ended my highschool shotput career with a pr of 50'1 and I only have one event that can take me to state.Didnt like it that much but now I'm missing it already.

what a technique ,his extension at the front of the circle is crazy ...beautiful to watch
nice song to go along with a great video. i dont think anyone is ever going to break mike carters high school record, its half impossible.
Nice choice of music! And of course, damn good put
wow great gliding technique and great spots that were paused, you really can learn alot from this vid. good info good vid :)
Great video man.I too want to throw like him.
Wonderful
Thanks for posting!
If everyone could use his legs like that, there probably wouldn't be any spin shotputters...
@1Nvinc1BLE im a junior but this is my FIRST year throwing so next year im hoping to do alot better. i do wish i started track freshman year though.
I am the second best in my highschool.... a senior throws 46'.
damn that is awesome. i throw the exact same way in my meets and today i got a 36.3, i thought it was pretty good.
@TheZeeland1 definitely not bad. my first year of shot i was 16 and threw a 45, this upcoming year is my second year and right now i'm throwin around 51, 52. just keep at it and hit the weight room plenty, keep throwing in the off season and you'll get some huge throws sooner or later.
right in to the records books :D good job man and thanks
@Paperpirate456-There are some shot analysis vids on you tube, showing the spin and the glide, those will really help too. The shoes reduce friction in both making it so the spin and glide are smooth and the momentum is not stopped. Good luck.
its a 12 pounder and hes only a senior in highschool 81'3" with the glide is legend bro and even if nick vena beats him he will always be the best hs shotputter with glide.
81 3..... That is seriously just insane.....
@intodustanddeath does it really, ive wondering weather to buy some
absolutely superb technique. i'm still a glide fan.
Great throw, but he looks like he's 30 years old. How long was he in high school for?
72-2¼, Hayden Baillio, Whitesboro
71-0½i, Stephen Saenz, Rio Grande City
there are 2 but this guy is a freshman throwing 56
56-1, Alex Garza, Rio Grande City
no not at all , he wasnt on steroids. he was just strong and a hard worker. if u search for his name on google youll see some information on him and what hes up to now.

I start for the first time next week. Any advice on what weight I should start with?
and he did the glide.....awesome
Is this video in Hi-Def?
I only throw like a 32', but Im getting better! haha still kinda far from 81'3 though....
Whoa. That's just ridiculous.
@sampsonelectro2224 I've been wondering the same thing. Watching Ryan throw is an amazing thing to behold. It makes what Carter did in '79 seem just that much more amazing. I think Ryan can do it, but getting that next 4 feet is not going to be easy.
Bo Jackson Herschel walker Michael carter the early 80s had the beast !!!
Uh. Michael Jordan.
that is insane!! our best guy throws it almost 50ft
@avenue745--Yes. Especially considering the amount of computer time kids spend---just doing it says alot during these times. congrats...
Not necessarily. This guy is a legend for a reason. He had a lot of natural strength and the sheer mass of him helped a lot.
@TheBruiser012 Is Gill a Junior or Sophomore?
That's further than a good majority of high school throwers can throw the discus...
Maybe
@@averagevlogger1159 Ha, I've definitely seen guys throw shorter😂
im a freshman this year starting my first year of trach n field hope i do good .... im 5'11 and 230lbs and i bench 215 and deadlift 330 i think ill do good.
Canada's man of steel.
Dylan Armstrong.

So im a highschool sophmore and our seson will not start till february but my PR Freshmen year was 41feet 1 inch. i am currently training(off season lifting and conditioning) im throming a constant 45feet as of now. if anyone has any tips or workouts that will help me they are greatly obliged.

@1Nvinc1BLE nice, good luck hope you get it!
freshman here i PR 43ft with glide i only bench 200 and squat 225... i have a back problem...
if i had a dollar for every pixel...i would have one dollar
and our highschool hits weights by the way. we have won state 2 years in a row and probobly will this year again. like i said im a freshman and i bench 265, and i squat 365.

i agree with u 70footer Carters world record will stand after until Nick Vena graduates lol. i gotta find out more about Michael Carter though , i heard he went onto playing football or maybe my facts are wrong. and i dont remember if it was in one of ur videos or someone else that someone said he could throw the 16 pound about 67 feet or so when he was still a senior which is even more amazing. i mean if he continued on that record streak he would have been the Olympics world record holder!
This clip has almost as many wiews as the high school WR length in meters. 24,780m
Nice feeling in the thecknique
yea im 14 and i throw a 12 lb. shotput 38'4. this is the first year that i threw. it sucks tho cuz my highschool has 5 50 foot throwers right now. for anybody on here. its kimberly highschool in wisconsin for people who are curious
and the national record for high school she was a beast also
i do shot put an i have never seen any one get that ever its off the chain crazy he goes in
I don't konw about Barnes and Oldfield, but Carter is still alive. After his career with the 49ers I believe he retired to TX.
2008 Olympic Shot put champ won with a glide.
haha im 16 my junior year first time throwing with a 12 this season without practicing and it was a 37footer today i just threw 39feet 6inches on stand throw ive only been putting since last year!. . . and the song is by Creed
Damn he is a beast...
im freshman in highschool i benched 295 squat about only 380 cause if bad knees but hit 46ft 4 with a glide n now im practicin spin got 45ft 9 with it in 1 week of practicin dont know how i match up to other freshman in highschool
im 15, a sophomore, girl and im throwing 35. im hoping to win state this year with a spin and break 40 ft. and then my senior year i hope to break 50 or more
It all depends what state you're in.
I'm 15, freshman, and without any training I threw 35 ft.
Is this good?
Now that you're 27, I think you know that that's not good.
@TheConman27 the jav is where its at
is it 12 lbs? thats really good if it is.... im a freshman in high schoo im 14 tho i throw 41-0
Nick vena is going to own this record in a few years... he throw 68 a few days ago as a freshman
How'd that work out?
lol that's a quick response. No offense meant and thank you for responding in a respectful manner :) . I expected a rude reply
Fairly sure someone with the spin will be hunting for the record. Slowly but surely spin is taking over!
damn carter's technique is soo good. I don't think people realise how efficient his technique was, it rivals ulf's , if anything I think his h.s technique on that throw is better than ulfs 21.37 from the top gliders video.
@The6mmHunter-Get shotput shoes, it makes all the difference.
Hes a freak no reason to explain... Like michael phelps winning gold medals at a young age when people have been trying to do win a olympic gold medal with 10-20 years training.
Wrong.. But it's right it is from Creed But the name of the song is Six feet from the edge
His technique is perfect 👌🏾 great power position but high a schooler?!?!!?
I think people only like this vid because of the music
true. but this is the high school record. they use 12 lbs shots. Randy Barnes, in college and the Olympics, threw a 16 lbs shot.
of course he is a regular human being its just he was a inspiration to all younger thrower like take for instance nick vena he is throwing 72 feet and hes a sophomore in high school so it would be incredible if nick beat 81 feet 3 and a quarter inch throw senior year
Creed - One last breath says it at 0:13
12 pound shot used in high school
this record has stood for almost 30 years and NO ONE has come within 5 feet of it....my guess would be Nick Vena will be pretty great but this record will still stand after he graduates.
Ryan Crouser, the current Olympic champ threw over 77 feet in high school. At 25 he's already the greatest American Shot putter not to fail a drug test lol.

Noon was juiced throughout high school and never tested
nick is going to get even better, i mean if hes hitting 72 feet at his sophmore year. thats only 10 feet and 2 years to make that PR. but yea ur right .
he isn't spinning he's doin the glide which is used for ppl who arent muscle heads
if you haven't thrown before, then yes, that is good.
@ozzy91792 The food that we eat, your technique, and your coach has a role in what your doing wrong. seeing that the world record with a 16 poud shot was set by Randy Barnes may 20th 1990 is 75.853 feet I am gunna call Bs on this.
Lol? tell me why he is a freak, he is a human being like everyone else...
im a sophomore too. last year i threw 42'5''. Do sprints.
