  • 👋 Today We built some custom shelves that go above the garage door. Time to clean up the garage space a little bit now that we are settled in to our new house. I ended up only using 8 2X4's, 1 piece of plywood, 8 big 4in bolts and a pack of 3in decking screws and about 20 2in deck screws. All and all this will be less than $80. Just using some basic power tools like my 4in circular saw, nail gun, impact drill and power drill I was able to cut everything together to make sturdy shelves for the garage.     Nice job. I like the angle supports instead of vertical on the corners. Makes it look more open and smaller. I may tackle this in a few weeks in my garage.

    Interesting build, but I suggest strengthening where you attach the angled 2x4 to the garage wall. You have only one bolt going into the stud wall but it is very close to the top edge of the 2x4. Any heavy weight and the 2x4 could split and the shelf will come down.

      Yeah I've kept an eye on it. So far I have less then 100 pounds on each shelf. It can hold my body weight fine. But if it start to sag at all I'll had something

      Yeah I thought about the hanging metal ones. But the nice ones would have been like $300. More fun to built it like this and was super cheap

    I would recommend buying a pocket hole jig! Great build.

      @@BrosFOURRSpeed pocket holes provide stronger joints, a better looking finish, and won’t split wood. It’s perfect for this type of project.

      If I had to replace the garage door springs, I'd probably just remove the shelves. Easy enough to do if I had to do that. Garage door motor and chain are all perfectly accessible

    Probably would’ve painted it before mounting but overall great job. I wonder if I could build something like this but with vertical supports to the ceiling and use it to store my spar elumber

      It was easy enough to paint once done honestly. But very helpful shelves! I've sure you could make a support to the ceiling

      With everything bolted in, I would assume a couple hundred pounds! I could hang from it, it’s pretty solid in the studs!

      I just made them the size of a piece of plywood basically. Cut the plywood in half length wise and fit it since the garage tracks.

    I'm thinking to something like this, but on the other side. Do you think it is safe to use it if somebody open the door while you are in the lader ?

      You wouldn't want to have the latter at these and open the door. You'll get hit. With the door closed is when you would put stuff up there or take it down.

      Yeah you can make this however best fits your space. I basically did half a sheet of plywood and it worked for what I needed

    with typical door springs that would prevent winding/unwinding them.

      Maybe. But if I have an issue with the springs I can easily un bolt these and fix the door and then reinstall them.

    Easier to paint before it all goes up, no? Not sure if thered be a concern in doing so thats why i ask.

      Honestly just as easy to paint after. Won't really make a difference

    Angular torque not a good idea! Your weight will put more stress to the 2 outmost screws held by the wall through side supports. Better to have it held straight up to ceiling, of course, to a stud.

      Yeah I thought of that. But thats why I did the big bolts through the 2x4 into the studs behind the wall

    With where you mounted it, you basically bought an engagement ring to that Wayne Dalton Brokemaster. You're going to be having the WD techs come put new springs in that bad boy every 3 years lol, no torsion conversion for you.

      This won’t interfere at all. My dad actually just had to replace the springs on his and storage up above won’t hinder that job as he just did it.
