Install some plywood or substitute wood product to walls of surrounding your wood shelving to insure an accident by putting your storage containers do not damage the insulation and installing with wood screws would allow access to this area for future projects or maintenance!

I would be concerned as to how to replace the door opener chain ( if you ever had to ) by totally enclosing the track in BETWEEN the joists. It would have been better to have the joists run ABOVE the chain track allowing free access to the mechanism 😊
Is that hanging from the truss above ?? spooky as they are not designed for weight on the bottom cord. They are designed to push the weight from the roof out the the walls.
How much weight can this support? Have a similar project and wonder if I should be going 2x8 for the front main support? Also not sure if it just be easier to go above the garage opener, though I like how much more storage room you gain doing it this way.
I’m not sure exactly how much weight it can support .but I do know I have about 600 lbs on it now and it seems fine. The reason I didn’t built it above the garage motor was because it would have decreased my height by about 6 inches. I was trying to squeeze every bit of space I could.
All the seasonal decorations Christmas tree outdoor decorations for all the seasons coolers pretty much just all the bulky things but I have to get out of storage every few months and it’s a lot easier than going up into the attic every time a season changes. All I have to do is get a ladder out and switch the stuff
This will be very hard for a garage door repair or replace. hard to take the opener off and You limit yourself to use Wayne Dalton garage door only, which is not the standard torsion or extension spring system.
So all of the boards up top are removable and there’s still plenty of room to get to all of the moving parts of the door to fix/replace. And if it ever becomes a problem I’ll just take it down and redo it with the same wood as this project only took me a few hours. But for now it does what I needed to do.
@@Kipberry19 the problem is when you have a lot of stuff up there; it will take time to move them. I have seen this so many times. The ideal situation is leaving a 2 ft clearance on top of the garage door which will make future work much easier.
And I do get that nobody wants to take the time to to move all the stuff off the shelf just to fix something but honestly I’m gonna be the one doing it so I don’t really care about moving stuff I was paying a tech to do it I feel pretty bad
@@Kipberry19 when people say things like “once every 5 years that’s going to be a few hours of muscle straining to fix” it always makes me think about people happily spending money on gym memberships to go lift heavy things and put them back down but those same people are worried about creating future muscle work for themselves in the future. Really it’s more like ‘I’m building myself a little workout in the future with this decision that will only do me good physically to accomplish’. Well done. 🤠
I tried to drill into my ceiling joist and i hit metal, it seems there is some kind of metal plate between my ceiling joist and sheetrock. Did you run into that when you hung the 4x4?
Too close to the garage door and the spring that's the way it looks if you have to replace the spring on a garage door there's going to be a lot of difficulties from the way it looks
The way that it is built it is a just above the door so the Clarence is perfect and the spring and motor are accessible for from both top and bottom for future replacement
Correct they are not attached to the roof trusses they are attached to the floor Joyce of the room above because this is a two-story house. Also on the opposing sides there are legs fastened to the wall studs that provide downward support on the ends so really the only supports taking any load are the two in the middle. And I just make sure that all my heavy stuff are around the sides
@@Kipberry19 For clarity, your hangers near the opener are in the absolute worst location for the joist/beam creating a point load. Your structure alone is quite heavy itself. Think water bed or piano in center of the upstairs room type loading. Good luck!

It appears to have a floor above that garage (here mentions this in another comment.) I'd be willing to bet there's going to be no weight problem from this shelf unless he's attacking Heme engines on it...

Great build but as a Garage Door Tech, this gives me nightmares. Access to the springs and motor rail is very limited, making any repairs almost impossible.
I don’t quite understand why you didn’t continue it out to the back-end of the garage door track?, Essentially that entire area is unusable anyways....
So what you don’t see in the video there is a support beam that goes from the left wall to the right wall that sticks down to about the same level as the loft. So I wouldn’t be able to extend that loft but maybe three or four more feet before it hit that beam. And also I need the overhead room on the back half of my garage for my car lift

I did not run into that issue. I used 8 inch lag bolts with no issues. I’m not sure what you would be hitting 🤷🏻♂️

Roof trusses are not designed to have a "negative" load placed on them. This could ultimately cause a catastrophic roof structure failure.

I used 8 inch lag bolts to attach 4x4 to the floor joist of the room above me and uses carnage bolts through the up rights from both directions

I actually just replaced both springs today and had it done start to finish in 30 min so no issue at all 👍🏻👍🏻
Your roof trusses may not be engineered for shear weight in the middle of a long span like you have. I'd be hesitant.
