Just seen this tutorial. I put "var /.4" (without the quotes) in the "Expression" field as the diameter of my wheels is 0.4m and that worked fine. I also changed "World Space" to "Local Space" in the bit at the bottom and now when I constrain the empty to follow a path the wheels point in the right direction all the time. Until I saw this tutorial I was having loads of trouble because I was trying to do this without drivers (you don't actually need them if the vehicle only travels in one direction) so many thanks Olav.
I'm gonna make it short, I'm currently preparing a huge project for my future which is actually an animated short film about a robot, and I clearly needed this kind of tutorial that will save me a huge amount of time because instead of animating the body, then the wheels, I will be able to simply move the body and then the wheels will follow. So I can't thank you enough.
Dear MattVG, think in this way. Use another empty, add in Y-axis rotation set the driver, edit driver, set the object as that empty. Then add constraint to the wheel that the rotation Z should be min -20degree and max 20degree for example. In short: add another empty to do the driver. And set constraint to wheel Z rotation
instead guessing multiplying by 2, you can calculate: rotation = x_coordinate / (wheel_radius). The wheel diameter can be measured with the measurement tool for example. (Radius = diameter / 2)
Thank you very much. Brilliant tutorial. So may tutorials of same kind with such complexity, enough to get frustrated!! Then a tutorial like this comes on the way, makes life so easy. Thank you so much. Cheers.
I always wondered how they animated the wheels, seems so much work to manually animate it, your guide answered that question, thanks.. i guess next is suspensions...
Thank you soo much for this tutorial! Helped me so much! I made a butt plug in this "wheel" rig rolling round a parented sphere and it looks awesome :D:D
This is an EXCELLENT video!!! I used this to animate a jet taxiing on the jetway.....butI have a question... How do I make the wheels stop rotating at a certain point on the timeline? do I have to change the drivers, then keyframe until a complete stop?
can you make a tutorial on how to make the steering wheel steer with the same car rig?

Olav, your video is excelent, easy and short, but in car.blend, you must save using File>External Data>Automatically Pack into .blend Some images like pirelli image, isn't come with blend file
Wow, I actually did not know that was possible, that’s why I linked to the source with the images, thanks. :) This is a rigging tutorial though, so rendering was not really the point.
Sylwester Mielniczuk haha you don’t say? 🤣 i’m still pretty beginner so i haven’t modeled a lot and i don’t understand half the things i’ve done now but i’m getting there, do you genuinely know how to separate wheels from a previous existing model or no?
What would the advantages be in using drivers instead of constraints and motor constraints? I can only assume in non-physics based scenes it would be less complicated to use the drivers.
3rd tutorial I have watched on this subject. ( over and over) Followed each to the letter and cant get my wheels to turn. Must be 2.93 version or my computer.
Help, I had to change the type location of the driver to Y Location, as when it was on the X Location, my wheel rotation value keeps snapping back to the zero value and u cant see the rotation of the wheel. So now that I changed it to Y Location, the wheel is turning and rotating but no the problem is that it's turning backwards instead of forward. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
I don't know if you worked it out but you would need to place the driver on the wheel's Y-rotation value instead of X. Unless you meant getting the value FROM the movement on the Y-axis, in which case you'd need to choose Y location in the driver attributes.
ah... damn. so if the car turns the axis changes and this wont work. if the wheels are only set to rotate on the y axis. so this is only good for going straight. i guess i could rotate the environment and sky instead of the car... or is there a way to make the wheels rotate only on their own preset local y axis instead of the global y axis?
@@Ab_obla thanks, I must've already figured this out as I finished this a long time ago. (it's one of my RUclips intro's). Unfortunately I have lost motivation for blender lately.
@@Olav3D actually can you make one tutorial like how to rig a car completely like even turning the wheels left and right. Then adding roads with awesome real looking textures ..And an small animation... It will help me like a lot and please try to do it in blender 2.8 or above
55+ vehicles for Blender add-on:
bit.ly/3cuWF8N
To add driver to other wheels, we can use CTRL+L > Animation Data.
for the rotation of wheel you can compute the rotation speed vs speed v=R*w v(m/s) R(m) et w(rad/s) but good tutorial as usual
Can you give an example of how you would do that?

I would love to see your solution for a rig that handles turning and moving in different directions.
Use rig-a-car add-on it even has dynamic suspension and it's free

1:46 when i did this my wheels flipped, moved, i don't know what's going on plz help me
When I rotate it it doesn´t rotate in its own axis like a wheel, instead it moves all the wheel doing a giant circle

what about the suspensions and the power output to the wheel?
