    Also forgot to mention that I got stuck on that Peyto Lake Dumpster last summer (was in there with a 32' TT)... It's in an awful spot right at the apex of the turn lol we got lucky with a vehicle pulling out and got those inches we needed

    Wow, we did that trip last summer (August) and it was epic!! We hit the road early so we missed all/most of the crowds along Icefields Parkway, and we were in absolute awe of the beauty. I think one of the comments below your video was that the beauty brought them to tears, and I would have to agree. Thanks for sharing your journey and the footage. For those who haven't taken the trip, it's a must. We also were able to "camp" at the base of the glacier for $20 in the parking lot of the Columbia Icefield and that was an experience of a lifetime. We had the parking lot camp spot to ourselves, so we turned our motorhome to take advantage of the view of the glacier, and the stars that night were unbelievable. We are so sad to see how the fires have affected everything and everyone in that area. Keeping them all in our prayers. The trip is a bucket list for sure.

    We had a blowout once and it was really scary. We were able to get off the road and it took an hour for the AAA guy to get to us, but it all worked out. The tire looked good, but it was over 5 years old (maybe closer to 6 years old). Now we automatically get new tires at 5 years. It didn't damage our trailer, for which we were grateful. Safe travels!

    • @OpenRoading
      @OpenRoading  7 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah! Blowouts are crazy. We had one last year (first one in 4 years of travel at the time) and what was crazy about ours is that it shredded...but remained fully inflated!! Scared the tar out of me twice... first when it happened and second because I didn't want to get close to it to work on it for fear it could blow up at any second because all the tread was gone and just the silver metal wires were staring at me. 😬 -J

      @shawnmason5290 7 месяцев назад +2

      I live in a stretch of interstate in Illinois that is only 15 miles maybe without an exit. I stop and help rookie RVer’s all the time with a tire that has blown out, torn up the side of their RV and screwed up all their relaxation plans.
      change your tires! grease your bearings! if it’s been an uncomfortable amount of time since you’ve done either maintenance item why wait? You bought one tire to replace one that was on the road running knowing that your spare was not that great either you really should’ve bought two so at least go ahead and just buy all five and do not ever buy Chinese trailer tires.
      The other habit you should get away from is setting your phone on top the outside of your vehicle. You’re obviously younger than me and I’m sure have a better memory, but I never lay my phone on the gas pump on top of the truck on the hood anywhere outside the vehicle. I’m normally in a panic inside the car trying to find my phone. 😳

    • @phyllissmith1105
      @phyllissmith1105 7 месяцев назад

      @@OpenRoading I forgot to say, we replaced both tires on that side, because all the weight of the trailer was on the good tire for a short time, and we didn't know if it might fail soon after.

    • @OpenRoading
      @OpenRoading  7 месяцев назад +2

      @shawnmason5290 "You bought one tire to replace one that was on the road running knowing that your spare was not that great either you really should’ve bought two....go ahead and just buy all five."
      First - my spare has some wear but it's not next to death. 😂
      More broadly, I don't know if you know this or not - but we have had to be quite frugal for the past 3+ years. Even now, as we make ends meet while also having a small "nest egg" for this trip we are not able to simply do a lot of things if it costs hundreds or even a thousand dollars. Every purchase we have made we have thought through significantly.
      We have 640w of solar panels. Would love to get more. Small battery bank. Would be awesome to expand it. Would love to have a professional re-roof the RV as opposed to my DIY seal job.
      This is not at all a complaint. I'm actually quite content in life.
      I'm just trying to explain why someone like me may not always do the thing that seems super logical to you. Who knows, we may live to regret not changing all 5 tires all at once... but laying out a grand for tires when the tires I have all have life on them isn't high on my maintenance priority list.
      As to helping rookie RVers - that's awesome! I'm so glad you offer your assistance in that way!
      We've been doing this for 5 years now. I've had one tire blowout in those 5 years and that was last fall. It probably won't be my last because if you do this stuff long enough, stuff like blowouts are bound to happen
      You may not have seen it yet but I greased my bearings literally in the next video and we're going to be replacing all the hubs, bearings, and brakes very shortly. That was supposed to get done before Canada but there were some crossed wires in communication that caused the delay (mostly my fault).
      If I can go behind the curtain for a second, it's the one part of the comments section I struggle with a little. Each week we get very well meaning people telling us all the expensive things we should buy. In many cases....we'd love to...but it was 9 months ago that we went full on transparent with our "We're Broke! Here's our goal! Work our way out of it and get to Alaska!" video.
      Somehow...I think people either think we were lying, or that RUclips is suddenly paying us 10K each month (Which is not happening as of yet but we're workin on it! - we were quite transparent on those numbers as well back in March).
      There's thousands of dollars worth of work that I'd love to get done on the RV and truck. But for me, that's not something I can just drop and do tomorrow. If something crops up, we'll deal with it. If a tire blows tomorrow, we'll deal with it - all without complaint. Meanwhile, we will slowly and surely get to the place where we can say "Hey...I know those treads still have life left... but let's replace all 5 of those tires at once because we're going on a big trip."
      So there's a quick peek behind Joe at Open Roading. I assure you that your comment did not make me mad, but I did want to hopefully give you a little understanding as to why I make some of the decisions that I do. -J

    I don't know whether it is your camera or my screen, but Peyto Lake looked very blue in your video. Normally it is a more green colour. Maybe that is because the ice has just melted and the lake has not filled up with fresh glacial 'flour' that gives it that colour! The glaciers grinding on the rock is where that flour comes from! BTW, that was the Columbia Glacier that you could see. We have hiked up to that and walked on it. Normally they have these big snow coaches with tracks that will take you up there.

    Take it from someone who lived in Banff National Park for a long time...the best time of year to visit is late September. Great weather, no crowds and the trails are snow free! May and June have some of the most volatile weather.

    Hello Joe and Kaylyn, I enjoyed watching your time in Banff. I would like to suggest that when the two of you are driving in the mountains that this is the safest way to safely make it to the bottom of the mountains without any drama: "Snubbing" is a braking technique that involves firmly applying the brakes for a short time to slow a vehicle down at a gentle rate while driving downhill. It's generally considered a safer method than lightly applying the brakes throughout the descent because it allows the brakes to cool down between applications and helps prevent brake fade. Please do NOT only use the trailer brakes when going down the mountain, that is very unsafe! Also, for such a heavy RV Trailer as you own it might be a good idea to have a diesel 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck that is equipped with an exhaust brake (also called an engine brake or Jake Brake). An additional rule of thumb is to go downhill in the same gear that you went while driving up the mountain. Some will suggest going downhill one gear lower than what you used while going uphill. I hope that you continue to enjoy your time in Canada, and I wish you a safe trip abroad.

    • @OpenRoading
      @OpenRoading  7 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the tips. We don’t use exclusively the trailer brakes. I apologize if it looked that way. Was just using that as a tiny extra assist. I generally get the truck in 2nd or 3rd gear depending on the grade. We’ve only ever smoked our truck brakes once and that’s because I didn’t realize we were about to be on a long grade and it took me a bit to get down to downshifting speed. I never “ride” the brakes on the truck or trailer. -J

    Make sure you get your mile zero certificate at the museum next to the sign. We had our dogs name as well as ours printed on it. The woman that filled it out must have had calligraphy training. The writing was very elegant. It was free last year. You can get the completion certificate in Alaska at the Delta Junction Visitor Center. Check their open hours as they close early. Hi there,
      I appreciate you enjoying our channel. But I have to be very real with you - I'm not sure why you'd say that about our friends...in our comment section.
      It's 100% OK to have a channel that you like or don't like. I'm 10000% sure that there thousands of people who watch Craig and Victoria and we just aren't their cup of tea. That's what's cool about youtube - you've got options!
      But saying something like this to someone who is clearly friends with the other is odd (and that's being as kind as I can be).
      Craig and Victoria are two of the most amazing people you could ever meet and on top of that - they are a huge reason that we even found success on youtube our third time around. It was a sit down with them last summer (as friends) that helped us realize some of the things we were doing wrong in this space - so to be honest...if you like us...you should at least in part be thankful for them even if they aren't your cup of tea. -J

    Joe, on your tire wear... that usually tells me your axle bushings and alignment plates are wearing out, stretching with the turning and pressures.... The bolt will actually stretch into oblong holes instead of original round holes for securement. Folks will replace tire after tire because the axles are working against each other and literally scrubbing your tread off pulling it down the boulevard.

    • @OpenRoading
      @OpenRoading  7 месяцев назад +1

      Appreciate this!
      We've been working a 3 step plan - least expensive to most expensive.
      First up was replacing the 20 year old shocks. All tires were wearing pretty poorly prior to the change out - wear has greatly improved. This tire was the worst one left. We just put the tire we had underneath as the spare on in it's place (next video).
      Next up is 4 new hubs, bearings, and brakes. The original plan was to get those done either just before crossing into Canada or while we were in Dawson. But our wires got crossed with the retailer so unfortunately that got delayed a bit. Quick Q - The bushings would be replaced with this, correct? Or are the bushings something that would not be included with complete hubs and bearings?
      Lastly - if our issue is persisting we will go in and check if an axle is bent/tweaked.
      The reason I chose to do it in this order was because the first 2 things needed to be done anyway - and I couldn't justify the expense of doing all 3 all at once. -J

    • @GregPrince-io1cb
      @GregPrince-io1cb 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@OpenRoading On your bushings and plates..... NO they will not be done with bearings and brakes unless you stipulate it... Gotta remember... mechanics are humans.. they do what's on the check list or order. nothing more unless you ask!! Those little bushing plates are probably 20-30$ and are 85% of the cause of tire wear/ other than low air pressure. Good Luck hoss, stay on top of your suspension and axles. They are literally the life of your rig...

    So beautiful! I think you might be right about the motorcycle catching attention because a lot of people are having issues with toy haulers so your setup gives them another option. Poor Craig! LOL at least he was a good sport. I hate round abouts too! Did they not watch the National Lampoon's European Vacation? They are so confusing, I actually saw a car enter one in our town and go left instead of right... lucky for them no one else was in the round about at the time. I saw that with the Hanks! We had one delaminate on us last fall. Thankfully only tiny bits of damage (other than the tire of course).
      I am really happy for one thing with our rig - our tires run at 80psi. So many of the newer rigs run at 120 and I have to imagine that the higher the psi - the bigger the explosion - the more probability of damage. -J

    • @OpenRoading
      @OpenRoading  7 месяцев назад

      There are lots of things we've heard all the way around. One thing I have learned is to don't go too far back in time when doing research. This road has changed a lot in the last few years. That said - we drive this rig year round so there was no way I was going to take tires with 3/4 life off for the trip. We'll see! Maybe I'll become a dire warning story. 😂
      in all seriousness though there are 2 things I am observing (we have done 3 days on the alcan so far)
      1. Most damage can be avoided by slowing down. So many RVs driving too fast for road conditions. Frost heaves aren't nearly as bad if you don't hit them at 65mph. A blown tire at 65mph is going to do more damage than one at 50mph.
      2. One of the things I like about our rig is the tires run at 80psi. A lot of more modern trailer run tire pressures over 100...to me...that's potentially creating more potential for damage in an tire failure.
      -J

    Love the Rockies! Most Canadian adults I know hate ketchup chips. Try dark chocolate Kitkat, also try SunChips.

      Love SunChips! We've got them in the US! I think we started loving them when they had those terribly loud bags back 10 years ago or so.
      It's good to hear we aren't alone on the Ketchup chip front although we've had a LOT of feedback that what we were eating weren't technically chips (as if it's going to be a lot different....we shall see). -J

      I've honestly been blown away by Alberta, BC, and now the Yukon. -J

      Most pretty ones I think we've ever seen (although Crater Lake National Park in the US is pretty epic...) -J

    I have an 8 foor slide in truck camper. I like to grab that spontaneous last site in a campground.
