Wanted to thank you for all the awesome content you’ve given us and please keep doing what you're doing. You're a natural. Just watched the Iceland Bicycle Tour, truly an adventure! One of my favorite episodes. Keep warm out there, stay wild and have a wonderful Christmas 🎄
This was so kind and so unexpected! I think you are the first person to “give thanks” to this channel, it is very much appreciated, thank you so much! Iceland was my favourite and most terrifying experience to date haha I’m really glad you enjoyed the video. Happy holidays ❤️
I really like how realistic your adventure videos look. This way I can feel more connected, like it all could (and some did) happen to me. Real life rarely as pretty as they often show. I like how you find the balance between the youtube genre and the practicalities. And how you describe sensations and feelings. Really wholesome!
red seal diesel mechanic here - unfortunately cold weather is the crutch of old diesel engines. You could buy a cheap plug tester to see if your block heater is drawing any current. You will absolutely need a functioning block heater if you want reliable starts in the Alberta cold. Running a thinner synthetic oil can help significantly with cold starts in the extreme cold. Those couple minutes of rough idling while it warms up may just be inevitable. Rev the engine just the slightest amount during those warm up periods to help prevent it from stalling. Good luck and enjoy the joys of JDM diesel ownership :D
@@Jessepersen thank you so much for commenting 🙏🏼 I was looking into getting a diesel heater and having some of the heat directed to the coolant/engine to be able to warm things up when I’m off-grid camping, do you think this would make a bit of a difference? I love a back country winter adventure but I get quite nervous that one day it’s gonna be too cold for the van to start and leave me stranded 😭
@@jennalexisko An external diesel heater is great idea! They make coolant heaters that can be plumbed directly into the coolant system of the vehicle - this would be equivalent of if not a better option than a block heater. They both heat the coolant and keep the block warm but an external heater is way more versatile/ energy efficient. Something like that is almost your only option if you are doing back country winter camping. I would personally install a coolant heater first and then maybe an air heater for the sleeping area as a second priority. Webasto and Esbar are the two big brands out there. Very reliable/ safe options, albeit may be a bit more expensive than other potential alternatives out there. My shop has a fair bit of experiencing installing and servicing heaters like that. We have even done a few installs on some imported Land Rovers recently (we probably have the cheapest part cost in Calgary but an install through us would be $$$). Look around though, definitely your best option. If I was in your shoes, I would be installing a Webasto Thermo-top. ps. been loving the recent outdoorsy content! I will be looking very forward to more winter time adventures!

Winter camping in Banff is such a magical experience, Every snowflake seems to call for adventure, and each breath of that fresh, crisp air gives you a boost of energy. ❄
Awesome video! You do a great job showing how to appreciate the best of Banff without breaking the bank. I recommend buying a Kat's 200W magnetic heater from your nearest Canadian Tire. It's a $100 DIY fix to cold start issues even in -40 and can stick right to the bottom or side of your engines oil pan. Good luck with your adventures!

"To get to the road is left or right, it's a 50/50 chance" I didn't even have to hear what you said after I immediately started laughing. Be careful out there, and happy holidays!
I was just in Banff for the first time. I was so scared it wouldnt be enjoyable in the winter but the flights were cheap so I went anyways. So glad I got to experience it in the winter, it was so beautiful.
You might consider looking into an Oil Pan Heater… works better than a block heater especially for cold starting a diesel. Not too pricey and just adhere to bottom of oil pan, plugs in just like a block heater
So here i am telling myself that i will camp in Banff come Spring or summer and there you are doing it middle of December wow! The beauty of having no one around tho, that's something that i really love. That is absolutely awesome too! That you can reach the tent via sunroof. Love it! I want to get something similar for my outlander SUV.
Thank you for sharing your trip. Heater blanket when you have electricity over your engine at night with minus weather might help my dad did that on an old car we had worked perfect
The way I have it connected is battery trickle charger and block heater on same plug so when you plug in your oil stays fluid and your battery is fully charged by the morning. You have to plug it in as soon as you arrive and let it run entire night. You can get noco 2A on board charger . Costs 60$ then you just connect both plugs to extension cord under the hood and run single cable out. You can test your block heater by plugging it into the power station and seeing if it draws power our buy AC wattage meter. My bet is that it doesn't run long enough.
Thanks for taking us warm climate people on another winter camping trip as we are too spoiled and lazy to drive far enough to experience our own cold winter snow camping. And wherever we go as we don't go far enough will be no where near the freezing cold weather that you experience in frigid cold Canada. So it is interesting seeing your experiences.
Good on you to have the courage and confidence to venture out and explore by yourself! I own a JDM Toyota Granvia that I(we) converted into a camper van and travelled N. America. PS, gasoline is a much better option especially in cold climate.
Merry Christmas young lady from a mountain on Taiwan! Fire-Maple 600ml G3 Petrel Ultralight Camping Pot Lightweight Outdoor High Efficiency Foldable Heat Exchanger Pot Portable for Hiking Travel . They work on all propane and gas burners. Work in half the time saving fuel. I use them in my campers on propane burners too. Love your van set up young lady. Keep it simple. Look at what people with Roof Top Tent (RTT) are doing for efficiency. Incredible views. Remember heat rises so when you run heat the upper part maybe better and can open a lil vent so you have a slight breeze so-to-speak. Make sure you put some diesel treatment in your tank as well for cold weather. Sounds like the fuel is gelling.
Hey, you should consider picking up a cheap Amazon space heater until you get a diesel heater. At least this way you could run your extension cord from the power post on your camping spot to run the heater. Have fun!
Tip for using your block heater: Wrap the wire from the plug inwards with black electrical tape ( as far in as you can go: 4 to 8 inches) and try to get a few plastic cable ties (Canadian Tire or other store) to fasten the wrapped wire to your from grill. Why? As you drive the plug moves back and forth from the force from the air and eventually the internal wires break (not the outside plastic cover) and then the block heater will not work. Best of luck. I enjoyed the video.

Load testing the battery (check cold cranking volts) at cold temperatures can predict whether it will fail. Checking the cables for corrosion or age (vibrations fracture braided copper cables) can also prevent you from getting stuck on a cold day in a remote area. Diesel hate the cold. I would just run the engine non stop. Diesel loves running and you will have heat non stop. I used to own a Mercedes GL350 diesel and in winter that thing always idled when I went places. I know people who work north Alberta who leave Calgary and drive to the northern oil rigs and their diesel trucks run 30 days straight till they return back to Calgary. If they shut the truck off for even 15 minutes the truck will not start again till spring. It’s so cold up there that diesel fuel will turn to gel.

Omg dude I've peed on myself/my floor/my tent so many times using that thing. Sooo useful and also huge margin for error LOL
Great video! I loved it
You're making me miss Alberta, haha, and that's hard to do!

I was just here for a hockey tournament and at the bottom lake where the trail head starts I saw a pretty good sized grizzly and the people were just standing there like they wanted to be eaten
Did you confirm that the power post at the campground was working/switched on?
