Kids got to start somewhere and with those kits at the start of the video, parents have no worries about glue, paint, or sharp cutting tool. Crawl walk run. Great video and a cool idea to get kids off the tablets and phones and utilize their hand eye coordination skills. Thanks for the hard work that you do on the videos.

Alright Robert. Introducing a new generation of scale molders. My stepdaughter built a couple of Arifix kits, came with paint brushes, safe glue. The subject was an guy with dog, and killer rabbit from a cartoon she use to watch, the first had motorcycle with sidecar and little funky airplane. She was between 8 & 10yo's. Had a lot of fun together. Unfortunately cell phones, girlfriends and BOYS came into the picture and she moved on.
A good thing you doing out there.
Thank you for all you do.

Wow; that’s great! You are a good man. As he progresses, work with him side by side and share your time and knowledge with him. I don’t mean to sound mellow dramatic, but making an investment in children is so important. You may never know the impact you had on his life. Perhaps when he is 50 or 60 he will look back and remember how this improved his life in so many ways, other than just building models. You have my respect.

I consider myself an intermediate builder. I've built hundreds of Gundam of various grades, easily 200+. A few dozen Star Wars models, a couple aircraft with minor success. When Front Mission Structure Arts came out, I got back into the scene.
I always loved the Front Mission games but they rarely got any love with toys or models. Every few months for a couple years now they come out with a new 4 pack and I've got the first 5 "volumes". They are a joy to build and paint, except for eyes that are only a mm or 2 wide. Being 1/72 scale, it's gotten me into constructing dioramas. Using HO scale buildings to make a city scene for a battle dio.
Your reviews give me the inspiration to keep chugging at it! Love that you cover so much on a wide variety of topics.

In the late 90s I think it was Testors came out with "press fit" models I built with my young son. Those versions were made to be as is from the box or the kid could paint them depending of the age. Cars & planes were the selection. My son wanted Navy jets since I was in the Navy then. There was a very small selection. I remember them because some car models were featured in Car Craft magazine as an weekend project for experienced modelers could detail & custom paint.

I like it on the dinosaurs models for the kids. You know a lot of adults, aka overgrown, are going to buy some.
Also, Robert, thanks for putting this video out. Buy getting kids started on a hobby of any type, you help with their development into adulthood. Plus, it's something that can last a lifetime. Plus, hopefully , it gives them enough to keep them busy. So that they are not out getting into trouble . For a lot of kids, go and get into trouble from the lack of anything to do.

That part about your dad was really significant! I'm very glad to hear how positive and contributive he was.. Sadly, my dad was very technically adept but too toxic to work with. Not good with kids or failure. First and last model he bought me was the 1:144 Saturn V by Monogram. I spent over a week putting it together with Testors model cement (the red gel stuff. I applied it much like I 'applied' toothpaste) and an x-acto knife which I cut myself with quite a few times. Trying to peel the decals off like stickers was probably my best/worst moment as a modeler. Then he dropped by to critique it, tore it to shreds (verbally) and we never talked about models for the next 40 years. He did take me fishing and inspite of the yelling, I've become much more accomplished at that than at modeling. The thing is - for fishing and modeling - when it comes to teaching your own kids, people have to realize that you don't have the same filters on for your offspring that you would have for, say, a public class or a volunteer situation. I almost blew it with my two oldest. When I found myself lecturing them (loudly) in a small boat, I was flashed back to my old man and I swore (the next day) I was never going to be that guy. Now when I take my kids fishing, I tie knots and unfoul gear. But I let them work it out anyway they want. 6 inch rubber minnow in a 2 inch creek? No problem? 1/8th oz rooster tail on 15 lb test? You got it. I only really went fishing after that by myself or with friends. But last year I went in the Chesapeake with one of those boys, now a man, and we actually caught fish! Modeling has only just taken hold of one of my middle kids, but he is persistent and has already glued his finger back together on his own. The next two after him do simple gundams, but I can already tell that if I live long enough, we'll have quite a crew. So tell anyone you know, its not how well they do it, its THAT they do it!

Great to introduce kids to this hobby. I know a guy who had a hobby shop from the 1980's until about 2000. In the late 1980's he told me kids are moving away from plastic models because of computers. I think a campaign to promote them is a good step. I have done this with some of my students. Thank you for your efforts. 🙂

I've been recommending snap together models to parents/grandparents for a youngsters first model for years. Sadly, none of the distributors we work with carry Airfix. I picked up a couple at Hobby Lobby when they where closing them out. Nice way to go for a Lego builder to get into models (painting up a Airfix VW van in the VW Harlequin paint scheme to display at the store as a paint display.)
I built the 007 1964 Aston Martin DB5 kit back in the late 1960's when it was a glue kit (I was around 12 or 13 at the time and the James Bond movie Goldfinger where the DB5 was used had been out not too long before.) It was a fairly good kit for the day as I remember.

The Airfix Quickbuild kits are a great way to introduce kids to both "construction toys", not allowed to say Lego 😏, and also models in general.
Here in the UK, you can often see Quicklybuilds in non toy shops just like the old days.
I have made a few of them with my son and they are really nice overall, the only problem is slightly lax QC. The models are a little fragile and rough play will cause them to explode, if you sant them for posterity a little PVA will make them mych stronger.

I love to paint (anything). I got into model cars quite a while back but never really enjoyed putting them together especially the more difficult ones. I quickly discovered the skill level 1 cars but the majority of them come pre painted & even those are difficult to find. I’d love to find something super easy to put together but unpainted.

This is a fantastic video. I started my boy, then four, over a year ago on a couple of snap kits (Revell Hotwheels Viper and a Ford F100) and he helps with Gunpla when I do those. He's really taken to Legos and can 100% do those kits using the instructions. I might try one of the Airfix kits. And, I'll definitely be revisiting this video over the next few years for ideas. Thanks!

I love this style video Robert I believe it will bring in outsiders and maybe help existing followers to maybe branch out from airplane to auto or vice versa. Same with Gundam and military. I was not new to airbrushing, but I feel I'm at a whole different place in my hobby now and this is all thanks to you. Between your reviews of tips and tricks to your tools. From your reviews on paints to now your own line (that I absolutely love BTW) From air compressors to airbrushes! This is the perfect channel! You have a totally unbiased, honest down to earth channel, and I share it with everyone I know! Thank you for all you do! Maybe one suggestion, if you could maybe create a site for your followers to share pictures and techniques of what they have done to accomplish certain specific shades of colors. This could be helpful as well. But I don't know how you could do it without it becoming a headache. Thanks again for all you do! Please keep it up!

I'd definitely recommend the pokemon kits for younger kids. They're great, not a lot of pieces or steps and minimal stickers (that mostly look ok). There are even a few with some articulation/gimmicks that are worth getting. The EG Nu Gundam is fantastic especially for the price. I would recommend it for anyone that likes gunpla and over any EG Gundam kit and probably a lot of older HGs as well.

I'd recommend getting the Gundam Marker SD Soketsuden set for SD kits. They're wonderful kits but they won't look great out of the box. The stickers are terrible and there's just so much details that won't be color accurate. It's a great opportunity to learn hand painting though, and the markers will make it easier.
