  • This short film by Alan Niku offers a brief introduction to Jewish Neo-Aramaic, spoken by Jews in the Kurdish region of Iraq, Iran, and Turkey. The language is related to the ancient Aramaic language of the Talmud, some prayers, and parts of the Bible, but it differs due to historical developments and influences from local languages like Persian, Kurdish, Arabic, and Turkish. Jewish dialects are often more similar to each other than to local Christian Aramaic dialects. Today, Jewish Neo-Aramaic is endangered, as most speakers moved to Israel, the US, and other regions and did not pass their mother tongue along to their children. This film includes clips of conversation and song and images of Jews from the Kurdish region.

Ktav Ashuri (Hebrew: כְּתָב אַשּׁוּרִי, ktav ashurí "Assyrian script"; also Ashurit) is the traditional Hebrew language name of the Hebrew alphabet, used to write both Hebrew and Jewish Babylonian Aramaic. It is also sometimes called the "square script", the term is used to distinguish the Ashuri script from the Paleo-Hebrew script.

You are incorrect at 3:00. Most of the dialects spoken by Jews are mutually intelligible with the Assyrian Aramaic spoken. it's usually only Sandaj Aramaic that is different.

So speakers of jewish neo-aramaic could not communicate with spekers of assyrian neo-aramaic even though they lived in the same city? Sounds very weird to me, never seen a video of a jewish aramaic speaker that sounds very different from Assyrian speakers of aramaic, having different dialects is normal even among assyrians but speaking with each other is not that difficult. Assyrians and Jews from that region even place extremely close to each other in DNA tests, jews from that region are much closer to assyrians than they are to kurds or other groups of jews.

Aramit (Jewish Aramaic) speakers, Jews from the land of Assyria (Isaiah 27:13), have nothing to do with the Kurds, neither in language, nor in religion, nor in ethnicity, nor in culture, nor in land. The Kurdish conquerors made every effort to exterminate the Aramaic language in the occupied land of Assyria. The only non-Jewish nation that speaks Aramaic is the Assyrian nation. The Jews are related to the Assyrians, Chaldeans and Syrians in the Aramit-Ashurit (Assyrian Aramaic) language, of Semitic origin, and belief in the Bible. That is why this video distorts reality and tells the public a story that did not exist in the Jewish history. The real story can be found in Dr. Yaacov Maoz's book, "Jerusalem and Nineveh" in Hebrew. It will be released soon also in an English edition. Long live Assyria and long live Israel!
    In that day shall Israel
    בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא יִהְיֶה יִשְׂרָאֵל
be the third with Egypt and with Assyria
    שְׁלִישִׁיָּה לְמִצְרַיִם וּלְאַשּׁוּר
a blessing in the midst of the earth
    בְּרָכָה בְּקֶרֶב הָאָרֶץ.
for that the LORD of hosts
    hath blessed him, saying:
    אֲשֶׁר בֵּרֲכוֹ ה' צְבָאוֹת לֵאמֹר:
    Blessed be Egypt My people
    בָּרוּךְ עַמִּי מִצְרַיִם
and Assyria the work of My hands
    וּמַעֲשֵׂה יָדַי אַשּׁוּר
    and Israel Mine inheritance

These people YOU call Assyrian have NOTHING to do with Assyrians. They were Aramaic speaking Nestorian Christians, were called Aramaic, who got labelled "Assyrian" by Britian in WWI to fight for them against Ottomans and theh DID so. Britain used them, Renamed them. Still other Aramaic Chrisrians NEVER accept them as "Assyrian". Assyrians spoke AKKADIAN, not Aramaic, and DIED OUT in 612 BC. GO ignorant one, read the book: "Arameans and the Making of Assyrian". This self-proclaimed " new Assyrian" delusional people are Not Assyrians, never been and will Never be.
