  • In each town of the Kurdish region, Jews and Christians spoke different dialects of Jewish Neo-Aramaic. Dr. Geoffrey Khan gives a historical and linguistic overview and showcases an interactive map with recordings based on his decades of research. Shahnaz Yousefnejadian shares her long-term dictionary project of the Hulaulá dialect of Sanandaj. Ariel Nosrat describes current language revitalization activities in Israel. Alan Niku gives the perspective of a heritage learner/speaker. And musicians Alon Azizi and Adi Kadussi explain why it’s important to record songs in these languages. The event itself also included original songs by Azizi and Kadussi, but these are not included in the video for copyright reasons.

Wonderful video! Just a note. Neo-Aramaic was/is spoken by Jewish and ASSYRIAN communitites. Most Assyrians are Christian but their ethnic/linguistic identity is routinely and systematically erased by both kurdish and arab officials and their respective political cultures, discourse and policies, usually by emphasizing their Christian faith, referring to them as "kurdish christians" or just "christians" and deliberately ignoring the fact that they historically constitute an indigenous people that have become minoritized in their homeland through multiple genocides. The unfortunate erasure of Assyrian history and experiences from mainstream awareness is what allows many to simply speak of "kurdish regions" and "kurdistan" uncritically. Such distinctions are important and they matter. Looking forward to more content. Tawdee!

I knew two Jewish brothers from Iran who spoke to each other in a language which was not Persian. They told me it has no name, it was "our language". Was this Aramaic?

Yes, some of the names of Jewish Neo-Aramaic mean "our language."
