    The "No-accessories" and "No-game-overs" are less of a completion thing, and more of a challenge thing.
    I saw it as a "Hey, you liked the game? Why not try again, but this time challenge yourself!"
    Once I got the 100% ending, I was content, and I don't plan on doing the other 2 challenges until I get the hankering to play the game again.

      I literally can not believe that anyone enjoyed this game enough that they decided to play it again. :(

      Also games like Persona 5 where its two playthroughs of a 100 hours game to get all the trophies, but like 10 playthroughs to get every single cutscene. Or the Link's Awakening chicken challenge, where the entire game takes about 15 hours, but doing the chicken minigame where you dodge chickens for 10 minutes straight takes 20 hours of attempts on its own and results in pausing every second. Or Horizon Zero Dawn which is great at all the difficulty levels the game came with, but is an absurd nightmare at its hardest DLC difficulty.
      Jirard really needs some kind of cutoff criteria where if getting a single reward takes longer than the rest of the game combined, it can get an asterisk.

      @@Lucarioguild7 Though to be fair, the issue with completing Origami king is not the collect-a-thon (which is in fact the BEST part about the game) but the no-gameover-gearless-run requirement. Gearless and no-gameover should never be a completion requirement, unless it's specifically baked into the difficulty setting right at the start. Especially since unless you bake it into the difficulty setting, no-gameover can easily be subverted by resetting the game, defeating the point.

    I'm just thinking how BotW would be greatly improved by having a similar checklist kind of thing. More korok seeds means more inventory, and more inventory means a better experience.

      With the koroks seeds specificaly, I don't think it would be too helpful.
      If they did that with the towers it would basically say "You have 100 left in this big area. Good luck finding them!". The areas are just too big and there are too many koroks for it to be too useful.
      But for other thing, like shrines, bosses or locations that would have been soooooooo useful.

      With the new rule you can't modify or add new characters.
      It's no excuse to not bring back the partner system as it was before nor to not bring back characters like Goombella,Bombette or even Koops.
      Heck, it would be awesome to see one of the Koopa Bros. to return as a party member.
      Mainly because they were already introduced, therefore it wouldn't be modifying nor creating a completely new character.

    • @SaraNightfire1
      @SaraNightfire1 4 года назад +20

      It's complicated. It was mentioned in the comments section of Zero Punctuation where the critic (Yahtzee, who I'm a huge fan of) that the rule states that ANY characters of the Mario genre are now not allowed to be changed. Meaning you can't add a hat to an established character, or a beard.
      I agree: It's a stupid rule and REALLY limits creativity. Especially when you see what they've done to Pokemon (Pikachu alone) with adding silly things.
      Miyamoto, who is a genius, trust me, I compare him to a God of video gaming in the same breath. Made this decision, others will take the blame, but he has the final say on what happens with the characters of Mario. I wonder if he's just too behind the times to realize how much damage this is causing for him to change.
      And yes, I know he had a hand in BoTW, but he loves innovation, and BoTW was practically innovated from the first step out of the cave. He would go with it just because it had some much innovation and "uniquenesss" to the series.

    Origami King is one of the completionist-friendliest games I have seen so far. It tells you exactly, what's required for 100% (including side stuff), it shows you per area, how much you are missing of each collectible (in percent) and gives you several helping items for finding said collectibles. It makes the majority of the completion process really enjoyable. That's a thing they did really well. Even if you hate the combat, the world exploration is fantastic. ...wait, there is a secret secret completion bonus? Huh. Well, since I didn't know and got the normal 100%, that's enough for me. Aside from the 2 "secret" completion achievements, this game was visually stunning, musically entertaining, and absolutely charming (though sometimes challenging) to play! Some of the best parts of the game include Autumn Mountain/Shogun Studios, Bob-bomb's Sacrifice, and the groovy Disco Dance cut-scene. (Note: if you have not updated to the latest version, there's at least one extremely game-busting glitch that can completely stop your current progress, and force you to completely erase your save file and completely start the whole game over due to how severe it is! What's worse is that this glitch can occur roughly 70-75% into your overall play-through, which means that the potential amount of progress you could end up losing is absolutely soul-crushing!)

What tips it over to "wrong" in my eyes is that they still could've come up with an explanation that worked (size of the explosion, certain Bob-ombs being Elites, an issue with the fuse being lost then reattatched...). Even if I didn't like the justification that much, I would've appreciated the attempt at continuity. But nope, let's just pretend this was never brought up before.

      This and the fact that even Bowser minion Bob-ombs can regenerate(just not in one battle due to game mechanics) it makes the whole thing come off as cheap emotional manipulation. The "he's just a factory made Bob-omb!" is a rationalization that doesn't fit when you know the previous games had them survive explosions just fine. They even have them in a little parade at the end of Paper Mario 64 where at the end they wave at you with their little arms.

      Where is this ever said? Why not just have a bunch of "organic" bob-ombs that are loyal and can keep blowing up again and again rather than mass produce them? Why even give them personalities if they *only* exist to blow up and be replaced? Bowser is egotistical, but he's not stupid. It would cost way more to mass produce than just feed and house the explosion resistant ones. "Factory made" bob-ombs make less and less sense the more you think about.

There are some people who say this is their favorite Paper Mario game. I’m happy that they enjoy it. I think the problem is that comparing the old and new games are like comparing apples to oranges. The focuses are completely different. Your preference is more a matter of what type of game you prefer, not which game did it best. To be honest I could be speaking out of my butt here because I’ve never beat a Paper Mario game, but I have enough of an understanding to be able to analyze why everything has played out the way it has. I think it would have been great if they established a new series with a focus on innovation and kept this series focused on the formula that people loved so much.

Then by the time I receive the game’s vanilla completionist reward, I find out that the “real” route towards completion is to restart from the very beginning of the game so that I can 100% it yet again but without getting any game overs or equipping any battle accessories. This punch-in-the-gut of a revelation is about as painful as if I had ever wound up having to restart the entire game for any of the other aforementioned circumstances.

      They actually already did the "about people" aspect better in the older games. Each Toad had a unique name, personality, design, and even extra information if you walked up to them and pressed the partner action button with either Goombario or Goombette in your party. This also worked for all of the other numerous unique NPC's. Enemies could have the Tattle command used on them to get more flavor text as well. Even in Super Paper Mario you could do this with both the tattle system and the capture cards on top of it. It just involved pointing the Wiimote at the character you wanted to analyze.

    I wouldn't dream of telling Miyamoto he's wrong, but saying _"It's fine without a story, so do we really need one?"_ strikes me as surprisingly narrowminded.

    • @arvilino
      @arvilino 4 года назад

      Miyamoto wasn't stating that the games can or can't have story, just that (Sticker Star) might not need one. Note the way its worded he'd also have to believe that the games would be fine with a story too.
      The RPG genre was already split between story-driven games, where you progress lead by storytelling. and non-story driven ones, which set the plot in motion at the start and then throw you into a world(like Earthbound Beginnings and Sticker Star) to progress through exploration rather than storytelling.
      So I don't really think it's a controversial thing to say.

    • @ZackofSpades
      @ZackofSpades 4 года назад

      Miyamoto is very wrong a lot of the time nowadays. The man had some good ideas in the past, but at this point he's got a stranglehold that keeps his precious babies from growing.
      For some context, the story in Galaxy was something that had to get snuck past him. He didn't want Rosalina in the game at all, and actually fired the game's lead designer after the fact. He wanted zero story, zero new characters, just plain Mario in a new 3D space.
      Miyamoto is a senile idiot who doesn't want to do anything intriguing or interesting with his characters, even in side games.

    • @arvilino

      None of what you said is true. The lead designer of Mario Galaxy, Koizumi didn't get fired, he's still in charge of 3D Mario and took over Miyamoto's role once Miyamoto stepped back.
      Koizumi didn't sneak Rosalina's story past Miyamoto. He just wrote the script late at night so no one would see what was in it.
      Then when he finished he presented it to Miyamoto:

    I'm doing no Death or Battle accessories run rn and the only real problem is being paranoid that you didn't home fast enough and the death still counted, or that tracker accessories go against the qualifications for the special ending. That means if your suspicion turns out true, all you did on this second run was useless.

    To me, whenever a sequel of a beloved series comes out, and the reviewer has to make a big speech about how the game is not as good as the ones past it because it's a different era, or that it's just as good and people are just blinded by nostalgia, the game is just not good enough. Take Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey for example, when those came out, no reviewer started their reviews by saying we had to overlook certain aspects of the game because they were trying to do something new with it, or that we had to be more tolerant with them because they will never be as good as the ones that came before. They started their reviews by praising how much of a good game those titles were, bringing new things to the table but still managing to be fun and bring that sense of familiarity to the fans, while drawing in new people. When you have to patronise yourself into liking a game, just admit it, the game is just not good enough

      This is exactly what I was getting the impression while I was watching the first 10 minutes. I was expecting Jirad to give the viewers his analysis about 100% the game, but instead he starts off by preaching about the game's good and strongest qualities, and how every sequel has something to give to everyone.
      That's a warning sign right there.

      I would say this is specific to Paper Mario, though, since it really has changed genre. Zelda and Mario are pretty well defined, and the main games don't really stray too far from each other. Paper Mario has specifically built a fanbase around the first two games, and the modern ones may be good, but they're different. It'd be like if the next Zelda game was a 2d platformer, and it was a really good 2d platformer, but Zelda has never had that as a core idea. We must distinguish Origami King from its predecessors to fully analyze it. Naturally, if you're a TTYD stan, then the merit of Origami King is based on how similar those two games are, and they are not. However, it has good qualities that feel genuine to a Paper Mario game, and I don't think that should be overlooked.

    I feel like this a " damned if you do/n't" kinda situation:
    If we don't buy the game, Nintendo may not make another Paper Mario.
    If we do, they might think people want more of THIS kinda Paper Mario, and we'll get more of what we don't want.

      Frankly I'm OK with no "Paper Mario" named games anymore -- just have a new Mario RPG IP that's a spiritual successor (ala Paper Mario 64 from SMRPG) that maybe uses 3D graphics and it's good to go.

      Buy Bug Fables, if possible on the Nintendo Switch. It's got more classic Paper Mario spirit in the prologue than the last three Paper Mario games have combined. Maybe if they can see impressive sales for Bug Fables they will start to rethink their stance.
