  • The Fuji GX617 is a handful. Fortunately, it is 100% worth the hassle for the giant negatives that it creates. This camera is unique and is exactly why film photography is so much fun. The lens creates huge 617 negatives.

    the faster you get with the changing bag, the less sweaty your hands will get. whenever it takes me too long i just set everything down and walk away from it, give myself time to dry off and get back to it. it definitely takes getting used to, but for me it was worth it, just for affording the kind of light control that allows me to work at any time of day.

    Very few people know that it's actually cheaper to buy a 1st generation G617 than a Hasselblad Xpan. But forget about the gx617 that's like minimum 6 grand to buy.
    Also another fun fact. The Fuji GFX 100s sensor size is smaller than then the image plane of 645 medium format (film). Why people say that the GFX is medium format.... and when people say it is a replacement for medium format film, I don't know since the sensor size really isn't nearly large enough.

    • @ribsy
      @ribsy  Год назад

      medium format is a range, so i guess that allows for the fuji digital cameras

    • @Superbustr
      @Superbustr Год назад +1

      @@ribsy
      People should think of what is being called digital medium format as full frame plus.
      In my book it is a con to call a digital sensor medium format when it's size is not even equivalent to the smallest medium format film plane size: 6x4.5

    One thing... you could have taken the "crash bar" off the lens to get it between the glass pieces. I expect it would have allowed you to eliminate the blurring on the shots, even if the front element and barrel didn't squeeze through the glass gap. You need an Allen key to do that (which I'm sure wasn't included with the gear I'm sure). If you were to buy one of these cameras, you would be able to get the gear together to do this whenever there is call to remove the bars.

    Fujifilm made a 300mm lens for the camera back in the day, but it's pretty uncommon and unlikely that you would find it available at a rental shop. Basically 2x the focal length that you shot, so you would get about 1/2 the angle of view of the images you made (uncropped).
    One big limitation of the GX617 (compared to the last Linhof camer, which I think may be still manufactured, but at insane pricing) is that you cannot change the lenses with film in the camera. You have to empty to camera first before changing lenses because there is no darkslide or internal shutter in the body. I suppose you could swap lenses in a film changing bag, but the risk of getting dust or lint inside while changing would be a concern. However, since there is only four shots per roll, you just need to think of it as one roll of film per composition...

If you were to find the G617 being sold locally on a classified ad there is a really good chance that it would be a hard item to sell since it is so niche and thus you probably could get a better deal than Ebay.

    A shame about the crowding and the glass, but some great shots nonetheless. I don’t want to sound like a film fanboy (now mostly digital due to the costs) but I MUCH preferred the 6*9 and 6*17 crops to the GFX. Yes, the digital had more resolution when zoomed to silly levels but the colours from those shots was nowhere near as nice. Ironic that an 80 year old folding bellows camera can take as pleasing images as a £10,000 plus digital set up!
