- Today I take out my Fujifilm GX617 panoramic film camera with some Kodak Portra 160 and Fuji Velvia 50. I have not had much luck with this camera in the past, but today I finally feel like this camera and I are starting to get along. We shoot some beautiful sunrise photography at my local beach and try our best to avoid any people getting in the frame... and it is a big frame!

THE best ending ever!!!! 😂😂
I haven’t done any film photography for a while so check this, but remember that in colour films the reciprocity effect also affects colour balance, leading to a colour cast over the resulting image. To counter this, colour film manufacturers published colour correction factors for long exposure to tell you which colour correction filter is required.
Great information. Thanks
Its always worth it, respect their decision if they decide to walk through but most people dont want to hurt the shot if they can avoid it.
At least we know the next episode won't be about photography - but about Heaton's recovery from hypothermia hahaha
I felt his pain
or looking for his crown jewels 😂😲😫😂😂
I think the last photograph is great, yet the third one is more exciting.
i love the pinkish hue on the first image
The ending is the best I’ve seen
Great photos, and entertaining to the end! What a peaceful beach... A walk on the beach every morning would do humanity a world of good 😌
nailed it! that last shot has beautiful warm purples and oranges.
Thomas - the image at the 7-min mark is beautiful. The composition and the light are just perfect. By contrast, the colourful shot into the rising sun is, as you said, a bit obvious - and I avoid these myself for the same reason. The last image is lovely, but the earlier one is still the best. Holy shit - I just watched the last bit of your video, and I felt my own balls shrivel in fright!!! Wow - you're a man of your word! Pisser!!
Got to love a man of his word.
Man of his word! Yes Thomas! 🙌
LMBO! That's ending was awesome.
Thomas you’re a treasure.
Thomas Heaton film instructions: 1- Click on like button and subscribe 2- Get comfortable, beverages optional ! 3- Relax and watch film, take inspiration and look forward to future content. Simple really. Cheers Tom. PS Nice gloves. The last photo is my favourite, perfect light on the white lighthouse, not always easy, you've done a great job balancing the exposure. Great job. Happy swimming.
Certainly love the last image.
The ending was brilliant!
Genuine humanity in this one. I relate to this vid so much
A man of his word! Great Photos Thomas....
The last one is perfect!😊
Agree, that your final image was the best. Well done Thomas.
Big Bertha is back! Wohoo 😀
Best ending ever!🤣 You are sir a true gentleman, You are true to your word!👊
Tom, you are so polite so never worry about asking folk to walk behind you! I remember one of your very earliest videos when you said you hated talking in front of folk, you are a natural so just jabber away and ignore them! Props for taking a dip, the North Sea in March must be bloody freezing lol. Oh and the last image is a stunner.
This video put a huge smile on my face!
loved the ending! love the honesty with which you make your videos.
Oh yeah baby! You definitely ended on a winner!
Thank you Thomas, the end truly made my day!
You nailed it with the last photo. Beautiful
The second to last photo was great. I agree that it was very simple. And i mean, its a sunset so it’s beautiful. I really enjoyed it BUT then u had to out do it with that last photo. LOVED ALL OF IT!
This was great! That last shot was fantastic!
6x17 panorama is stunning
Thought the last image was the pick of them but watching you have a dip in the very cold looking ocean just cracked me up 👏👏👏👍
I don’t miss reciprocity failure and color shifts. Velvia was one of my favorites back in the day, Fun to watch you in action.
That camera is awesome!! Beautiful photographs!
Lol, love the ending! Think the sunset photo was my fav of the bunch. It had more going on that the rest.
Brilliant job! Thoroughly enjoyed watching the transformation and attention to detail. Good on ya, mate!
What a great moments you make me in front of the pc!! Congrats for your impressive work!
Wow 5+ stops over. I'm amazed that you have a thing to share. Well done that man.
Hi Thomas ! GREAT !!! GREAT !!! GREAT !!!
Wonderful video! The sunrise image is beautiful, easily my favorite from this video.
Thanks a lot.
Can’t believe you actually did that at the end! 🤙🏼
I love the reflection of the lighthouse in the wet sand on the last shot.
I've always wanted to use the Fuji GX617. What a beautiful camera!
The sunset you were not fond of I would love it on a 36 inch print the length of my couch.
absolutely stunning
Both the last two are great. Well done!
One of my favourite videos you’ve made. The ending was hilarious!
Damn man. That ending. You really made me laugh. Kudos to you!!
A great set of images. I like the color tones of both films.
Loved the whole video and the shots were just awesome.
Twit!....🥰😍😂📸....glad you kept your hat on!....😘🌈📸
You're a brave man Thomas Heaton. I was shivering at the end 🤣👍
O TREMENDOUS! This was a thrilling adventure, you made it so much fun. Surprisingly, I found the shot into the sunrise the one that most surprised me and enjoyable. There was just “something” about the combination and spread of the rocks “floating” in the water that was unexpected, I liked the healthy proliferation of them, and most photographers would have chosen a much more winnowed down challenge. BIG LAUGH at the end, I mean BIGGG LAUGH!!!
Loved the last clip of you swimming. Very funny. Good on ya mate.
The things some people will do!! (Well done Thomas; in the right spirit). Btw, love the final image.
Love the last image!
in love with velvia :-)
Great shots Thomas. Please continue to explore film photography, it is very inspiring.
20/10 for commitment!
Thats what we like, a photographer of convictions.
Well you really took the phrase literally 😏.. Pure hard work and so relieved to see dramatic step by step improvements.. And loved the dip...
I have shot film a few times maybe thirty years ago before digital was a thing, which is why i gave photography up back then as it was just so so difficult to teach yourself , i am enjoying watching your journey with film and how you approach it, that last image, sadly for you, came out really well hope you are over the hyperthermia that surely must have followed . I also find it difficult to talk on camera in front of people , just so self conscious. I also admire your outlook when members of the public are also enjoying the landscape. I dont comment very often but watch all your videos and really enjoy them and find them a great source of personal inspiration , so thankyou .
Really nice video again. I feel like you're always outdoing yourself in regards to edutainment and production quality. I hope you'll have a lot of fun with that camera and I am already looking forward to a panoramic calendar of yours. 👍🏽 Cheers.
If the price one has to pay for great photography is jumping in the cold drink, I think I'm suddenly happy that I'm not any semblance of a skilled photographer. That last image was a stunner, Thomas and the video was a lot of fun. Cheers!
Your final image on the Velvia 50 is great! Let's see a print of it. Thanks for sharing.
Your such a trooper Thomas. Good video. 👍🏻
Thank you for sharing this moment
All images are nice but I preferred the sunrise photo over the others. The colors were beautiful.
Sometimes I look at an image I’ve taken and feel it isn’t enough to justify the work I’ve put in to take it. This last image is so normal yet so beautiful at the same time. Consider me inspired.
Extra thumbs up for the ending 👍👍👍👍 That must have been sooooo cold 🥶
That made me smile, great ending!
Whoa, wonderful episode. You steadily move photography back (or shall I say: forward?) to where it can be: ART !
I say "can be" because there is no need to make photograph a piece of art every time and there are plenty good reasons for most people not to try. But you deliberately picked the form of photography with the highest possible demands on craftmanship: all manual, analog, limited resources (no. of images per film, but also dynamic range is a limited resource!) and almost blind in composition (at least regarding grad. filters). That is art to me.
And finally you wrap that hard work into an entertaining and even funny (holy cow, that last scene...) episode, which I find to be a form of art on itself.
My compliments and a massive thanks for sharing. For sure one of the very few GEMs on YT 🍀🌈🙂👍📷
Into the brine. Well done.
Glad to see you stood up to your promise :)
That's a nice ending! Next step is the ice bath like we do it up here in Norway, cut a whole in a frozen lake and take a bath there! :)
Part of the morning ritual!
Never will we be able to "unsee " that ending. It is now engrained into our memory banks for life. Thanks Thomas. You were a brave soul, I have to give you that.
Thomas, good on ya....you’re a gamer...I remember swimming in the Baltic after a sauna a few years ago... I know how cold you feel...
Glad to see that the images turned out. I guess now that you realize that you and polar bears have a little something in common.
Thank you so much Thomas! I love your vidéo and composition at the beach!
Haha oh Thomas 😆 that ending .
The last two looked good 👍
I love the last shot. You nailed both the exposure and the composition. I love the foreground and the white lighthouse in the distance. The colors are amazing. They are both warm and cool, if that makes sense. The sunlight on the rocks are warm and the colors in the water and sky are cool. Makes for a nice balance.
Keeping one’s promises is important. But getting the shot is what it’s all about.
Thanks for sharing again Thomas.
Stay safe,......and warm 😷🇦🇺
I think we all want to see more Thomas challenges.... burrrrr
love it Thomas!
Feels cold just watching! Mind you the North Sea is probably the same temperature in the summer!
Lovely vlog mate, really enjoyed this one! Such a craft shooting with that camera!
Love your humility, honesty and storytelling, another wonderful video. Cheers, Duade
I promise to make sure my dog walks behind your camera if we ever see you on the beach ! Great video as always
Great video Thomas. It's nice to see you getting that passion back after what I know has been a long year for you as has been evidenced by the psychological ups and downs in your videos. I thought I was watching a Gavin Hardcastle video with the great comedy at the end. As for the images, the last image, with the pastel colours was fantastic for what is basically your first attempt at using this camera. Well done and looking forward to a rejuvenated Thomas Heaton.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Absolutely fabulous ending!
I really hope you are alright after that.
Beautiful pictures, congratulations!
I really like the Fujifilm GX617.
I've politely asked people to please walk behind me for the same reason you did. Never had a problem. I did like the last image. The sunrise image is very pretty, but I agree it's a bit post-cardy.
Eh, post cards $ell 😁 keeps the film in the camera
Ya nuts Heaton!! But it is great to see how you are learning with each image on that camera.
I like the sunrise photo😊
I really like the bit of a reflection of the lighthouse in the wet sand. Really cool.
Watching again because I just got a 6x17 roll film back. Looking forward to more film videos.
The ending was really hilarious. ha ha ha
The tones of the Velvia are absolutely gorgeous
I love the sunrise shot with the Velvia 50, the one you did not like. I think the shots benefit from being panos and would look great on the inside wall of local bank. Are local businesses asking you for images Tom? If not, why not. I LOVE the ending. You are so great to watch on YT. I would not miss one of your posts, ever. 👍👍👍
I didn't think you were going to take that swim! Hats off to you! LOL
Unexpected ending!
