Love how you composed the sheep. Makes me ask the question, “where are they going?”. Great photos tell a story and/or lead the viewer to ask questions. This one nailed it.
"I feel like I shouldn't be here." That statement hit home for me. We've all been cooped up so long that being out and about feels....weird. Like we're breaking the rules, acting like the bad kids. I'm thinking I need to be a bad kid more often to get out of this rut. Thanks for the inspiration. :)
I sympathise. Last summer I went out walking a lot, but the recent bad weather has kept me indoors and even though the weather was fine today, I made excuses and didn't go out for a walk. I think I'm going to have to reintroduce myself to the outdoors very gently, like returning a creature to the wild after it's been in captivity for too long.
I’m a photographer who’s turning 15 in 3 months and has been shooting pictures since I got my first camera on my 13th birthday. But only recently did I realise how relaxing it is, and how it makes my life better in so many ways. It has helped me survive through lockdown definitely

@@Light_Camera_Story Welcome to the addiction of buying cameras ahahahaha. Nah just kidding, you said something very powerful, try to let out all the existential issues and embrace the light coming through the lenses whatever that might be. :)
For me, that sense of agitation is common in the early part of an outing and I know that it will eventually be relieved when nature reveals the shot to me. Then the right brain takes over the left, and the excitement overcomes the agitation. I really appreciate that you shared the struggle that we all go through and not make it look so easy. Thank you!
Appreciate your emotional honesty. Being in lockdown makes me feel like I’m not accomplishing anything (Ontario, Canada). I get outside about 4 times a week to hike and that’s been a mental health boost. Love grasses in snow! And the mounds of snow on ice. Simple images that are peaceful. We have tons of snow here. Take care.
I love how Thomas can take a picture of grass in snow and have it be better than any ohoto I have ever taken. Absolutely amazing how he easily he can make me feel emotional with his images.
You actually are in a better place than you think when you're feeling that agitation, just by the fact that you caught yourself feeling it. Most just get caught up and taken for the ride. Take a deep breath, appreciate the moment around you, don't run from the feeling, accept it, and know that like all things "this too shall pass." And it does.
This video makes me appreciate living in Sweden even more. Having the freedom to be out in nature is fundamental to my well-being and being able to do that even if it's just a hobby is something that many around the world can't right now. This might be a bit controversial but, life is about more than just being alive. Life needs to be lived!
I don't think it's controversial at all, just that some people have been frightened half to death by governments and mainstream media that they've forgotten what it is to live their lives.
The amount of joy you're getting from shooting some grass, snow, and sheep is reminding me that I gotta just go out and shoot. You don't need an amazing landscape or subject to get awesome photos. Great video man. Subscribed!
I just love how honest you are with us about yourself and your workflow.. for us viewers, I feel it allows us to connect more, not only without you, but also your work.. it allows us to really engage with the images.. thank you!
True words - I have experienced joy after a hard day by the setting sun, the rising moon, the lights on the old buildings - just whatever is near your location.
That was the most enjoyable and simple 20 min I've had all week. I don't know another photography RUclipsr that can do it as well as you. It's just you and your camera & me enjoying the experience. You are one of a kind Thomas Heaton, don't change a thing Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺🦘🇦🇺

Hey Thomas, this video really helped me actually as I’m a year 11 student who’s grown up with family interested in photography and I’m really interested in photography but feel like I can’t at the moment and feel trapped by not only online school but just being stuck in doors and not quite sure why but just watching your video made me feel better.

Great video. That sheep image was gorgeous and I 100% agree, there's nothing better to lift your spirits than getting out in the middle of nowhere and just shooting.
Everything you said about feeling agitated and rushed feels so relatable to me. I think with the work I do it makes me that way and it’s hard to just stop sometimes to relax and take my time.
Cheers Thomas, I was out and about the weekend before last and we had snow and it was AMAZING. I had such a blast and was pumped full on energy like a squirrel on caffeine. Like you said - FOMO. Because there was such a long drought of being inside, having nothing "special" to look for except your videos. And your videos helped me a TON - I basically binged everything I could because I was going insane. Keep it up and remember: We're all in this together. You are not alone and there will be different times. Hope I can someday meet you and be on a course with you. Cheers,
I've been watching your videos for years, and just wanted to say thanks - your channel is probably my favourite on youtube and your videos always inspire me to go outside and bring my camera, even if I don't feel like it, and also to just enjoy nature. You're a great photographer and seem like a great person too!
Earth is full of beauty, you cant really go wrong when taking a photo of nature. You're certainly not alone in loving grass standing in snow or sheep...And those that might Say its not grand enough they havent seen and felt all the beauty of Earth and they cant yet understand how healing every piece of Earth is. But I know you will always find people that appreciate your work, because You are putting love and effort and talent in it and it shows. And also you have an amazing presence that adds to the beauty of your videos. I hope you will always have enough time in nature and for whatever endeavours and wishes you might have.
Haha. Nope. Not just you. One of my favorite shots this year so far is exactly that; a few blades of grass popping out of the snow. And that sheep shot at the end...pure joy. Love that. And I think that's exactly why you were agitated to start - you didn't seem present. But it seems like once you became part of your surroundings instead of just an observer of them, everything shifted. Yup, being outdoors works every time! Thanks for doing what you do.
@6:07 know that feeling, rushing, but don’t know where to or why. Think it’s some kind of pressure you put on yourself, that don’t come right. Btw, magnification on your cellphone solves the problem with a viewfinder missing magnification on an old camera, just as a tip
You're Right, Just getting out into the Fresh Air. Focusing on what you Love to Do. I have done the same thing. Gets your mind away from the worlds problems!
Photography is amazing for you, at least it has been for me. Some years back I had been laid off and was feeling quite depressed. I took my camera with me when I brought the kids to a local playground and just started to take photos of them. Just that simple act pulled me out of my dark hole and helped me feel good again. I find myself back there now due to being laid off again recently, so I’m bringing my camera with me everywhere to help keep me from falling into depression.
Emotional honesty - Likely one of the reasons many of us follow you. When encountering similar experiences, I know that it's time for me to do a bit of mindfulness breathing, making sure I am in THAT moment, and not dealing with many others. And, of course, GET OUT!
I'm on day 7 of a post winter travel 14 day quarantine/ time out. Back in the cold and wet West Coast of Canada after 3 months in Costa Rica. I know some will say "suck it up", I will. But my mental health is now effected by being caged after running free. Looking forward to my release and going for a bush walk with the camera. Thanks for sharing Thomas, Pura Vida!
A breath of fresh air with that video, I totally agree there’s nothing quite like getting out with the camera to clear the mind. Some stunning photos there too, the sheep one is surprisingly good, excellent even.
I had a very long-winded speech to give about how so many of us are struggling with locking down, staying safe, and dealing with what seems at times to be a tenuous future -- at least for 2021. But, as you have again shown, perhaps all that's needed to be said is simply "Photography is therapeutic."
Living in Minnesota where it snows six months of the year, I can safely say you are not alone in liking minimalist scenes like grass in the snow :-) Often find myself drawn to photos like that.
Don’t give into the fear Tom. You are out there in the snow ❄️, working. Yes it is a tall tripod, brilliant bit of gear. (Got one myself). Thanks for sharing again Thomas. Stay safe 😷🇦🇺
When you mention feeling agitated, I cannot help but think about Morten Hilmer, setting up his camera then sitting down to a cup of coffee to take in the environment and settle into the photo shoot.
Thanks for your honesty and vulnerability Thomas. Not an easy thing to do. Yes lockdown continue to have a profound impact. It’s definitely OK to recognise it. As always, a pleasure to view your videos and learn. Thanks for being so generous with your guidance and inspire good photography.
That last one was magical! Also, props on being so open and honest. It's hard to always maintain an image and a brand, but I can only imagine it's actually harder to just be 100% honest with an audience
The last frame was like a charcoal drawing. The shutter speed was absolutely on the money and the arrangement of the sheep couldn’t have been orchestrated better if you tried. One of those moments that only come along once or twice a year...if you’re lucky! Beautifully done, especially so with film.
That photo of the sheep was excellent. I think I would have tried a 3:2 crop which is how it first appears on the video. Congratulations, Thomas! Great work. Glad you are feeling better, we can all empathize with the lockdown doldrums.
Loved the sheep photo. I totally agree about photography and getting outdoors helps your mental health. I don’t what I would do without it. These videos are a great escape during lockdown, thanks so much! 👍
Thank you for sharing. Your videos are so therapeutic both in terms of the views, and your subtle reminders to keep paying attention to the emotional background of self 🧡
Look after yourself Thomas, Take a breath, take in the beauty that surrounds you and most of all take time to look inside and see that you have a great talent and I don't mean just your photography mate I mean your connection with nature and also with your viewers.
Beautiful video Thomas. You have always been able to portray the excitement of your photography. I connected deeply with how you expressed your troublesome feelings. I use my woodland and landscape photography to help with my mental health but you showed how important it is to not put pressure on it being the complete solution, to slow down and just enjoy being out there. I did laugh at the end when you were photographing the sheep. At about the 15:45 -16:00 min mark as you were explaining your excitement about the sheep and if you watch in the back ground every sheep wandered off the screen and I though you were going to turn around and they would all be gone. Thanks again.
Group outdoor therapy sessions with Thomas! I always appreciate how genuine you are with your process. There’s never anything contrived in your vids. I hardly comment, but your channel is one of my favorites. I Thoroughly enjoyed the photos in this one. :)
Right back at your best - can see the difference that something unexpected made to your eye and mood. Nothing wrong with getting excited at grass in snow - I first did 49 years ago and still do now, even by proxy! Cheers 👍👍👍
I know that feeling well, the anxiety of knowing that you're supposed to be working and not enjoying yourself as much as you are when you're able to just exist and photograph.
You're definitely not alone in getting excited/inspired by tufts of grass sticking out of snow. We may not have snow here, but I recently took a similar minimalist image of just a few tufts of dune grass coming out of sand.... and it worked so well. Absolutely loved the final sheep image. Really nice work, and good to see you ending on a more positive note.
That video was sooooo good, just to be outdoors in all types of weather is what it's all about. Amazing images right from the Grass in the snow through to the sheep in the field. One of your best. Thank you for sharing it with us.
I took a photo of grass coming through the snow the other day on 6x6 portrayals film as well. I thought it a trite when I took it, but I like the shot. So Im glad not the only one that thinks these things are worth capturing. The last sheep photo is amazing. The shape of the trees, the line of sheep, and negative space really work well together.
I sold all my kit last year because I was so sick of just looking at it and not being able to get out and use it. I didn’t realise how much I needed it as a reason to just get out. I’ve got an X-T2 and a zoom lens arriving tomorrow and I can’t wait to just start taking photos again.
Thanks for being so REAL about your emotional state! Great message to share as so many of us are struggling but we are not alone and getting out in nature’s so inspiring and uplifting!
NIce video Thomas. When I was feeling down, my doctor told me to "walk in green places". It works! And, if I can come home with some photos, that's a great bonus.
If it helps, do remember that your videos of the outdoors are also helping other people’s mental health these days. Thank you for taking us to a wonderland forest adventure! And stay safe!
Yes! Amen to this! I find Thomas's videos truly refreshing.
That's nice to hear. Thanks a lot.
Yes, I find his videos very calming.
That last sheep-photo was superb! Love the simplicity and especially the depth as the sheep vanish into the background :D
Yes but maybe the color on the back of two of those sheep should've been desaturated in Photoshop.

That shot with the sheep is stunning simply stunning.
i like your movies so much. especially your way of commenting on them. very honest and authentic. I look forward to your contributions every time.
That's very kind and I appreciate you taking the time comment 👍👍
Right back at your best - can see the difference that something unexpected made to your eye and mood. Nothing wrong with getting excited at grass in snow - I first did 49 years ago and still do now, even by proxy! Cheers 👍👍👍
Tom you actually brought me away from the epic scenes and into the minimalistic world and I love it so much!
Good to hear you are feeling better. Rock on Tommy, well Tom.
Thank you. That’s all I have to say. Thank you.
Fantastic video Thomas, not just the photos but hearing your thoughts about how photography makes you feel - inspiring. Thanks.
That video was sooooo good, just to be outdoors in all types of weather is what it's all about. Amazing images right from the Grass in the snow through to the sheep in the field. One of your best. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Really liked the sheep photo. Dramatic and peaceful at the same time, very atmospheric
Loved the last image of the sheep in the snow. A beautiful composition. Thanks for sharing!
That sheep photo is amazing! I paused the video and looked at it for a while. Such a deep image.
The last picture was an absolute beauty and thank you for the video.
Thomas I loved the shot of the sheep and film tonality is absolutely lovely!
Absolutely loved this. I feel the same way. Just get out there and enjoy it.
NIce video Thomas. When I was feeling down, my doctor told me to "walk in green places". It works! And, if I can come home with some photos, that's a great bonus.
