Just wanted to say, unlike Polaroid film, Instax exposes from the back and therefore doesn’t need an opacifier. What that means in practical terms is you don’t need to shield it from light while it’s developing. In my experience the film is spot on in iso, if anything it can benefit from +1/3 of a stop for shadows at times. How accurate is the shutter in your graflex? It looks like it might be lagging slightly and over exposing. Great to see the the instax in use out in public!
Thanks for the info, my camera shutter operates totally fine as far as I know. The key is that instax film has very poor dynamic range so you kinda have to pick what you want to be exposed properly
Another great Feasting on Film video. I’ve been taking my 4x5 out on hikes lately and have taken a few portraits of people I meet on the trail. I definitely feel under pressure trying to be quick and not mess up too badly.
Just found your channel and love your content. Quick question about this Instax back...can you leave the back on while ejecting the film? Then, if the focus and composition are spot on, but the exposure is off, just change settings and try again? Seems really annoying to have to remove the back every time to develop a shot. Thoughts?
Awesome video Ribsy. I just scored a graflex crown graphic on ebay and will be trying some instant photography when the lomo graflock comes in. appreciate you always being my inspiration. P.S. Seagulls cary the souls of the dead sailors. Hold Fast & Stay True my friend.
I shoot @200~400 with square in full sun and get decent results. Its a super tricky film to shoot outside a studio. Also, I just noticed im trying this comment on a preview lol. It just stop and I was like huh?!
Great to see the graflex having a run. Remember though its a press camera, it is meant to be used hand held, run and gun - swapping film holders and popping flash bulbs red hot straight into your hand. Photogs were made of sterner stuff back in the day 😎
@@ribsy The Lomograflok back has a focusing plane that is moved back further right? You could adjust the rangefinder to compensate for that, or you might just even be good with the lens stopped down far enough.
I'm waiting on the delivery of my unit for my Shen-Hao. This made me very excited and anxious! It was nice to learn from your process and maybe save some exposures from mistakes I'd make.
Is the rangefinder not adjusted? I have a 4x5 press camera similar to yours and it's got a kalart coupled range finder. Not sure mines adjusted either it's something I've been meaning to check. Not sure it'd make much difference with how the film back you are using moves the film plane back like you mentioned.
I am so jealous!!!I pre-ordered it ages ago, but have yet to get mine!!! I used to use my Graphic with Polaroid 4x5 and use it like a point and shoot!!!
The explanation gets me every time 😂. I went to the sister Islans last weekend with my DIY Instax back for the RB and people were confused until they got the photo in hand lol. Also I think there is some light leak on the edges. I had a similar issue when I built my own.
damn I love octopus. She was definitely a subject worth getting a right exposure for. That tuna sushi looked good as well 🤤 whaat the crab wasn't good?
Looks like a great day out! I have not shot any instax in my 4x5 yet. And, honestly, I am not sure I will. I *want* to like Instax but so far, it just doesn't grab me. The BW version is better but I have not yet been happy with any of my color shots made with it. Your portrait of the woman is really good the other shots you shared with us are fine but let down by the Instax film, I think. I started using 4x5 as a way to help me become more deliberate in my photography and the photos I choose to make. The slowing down required to use my camera has helped with that. In fact, my first--and only so far--4x5 camera was made just a few blocks from where you were for this video: I bought an Intrepid 4x5 camera made. I hope you had some time to go see those guys. Great fun to watch and thank you for sharing this!
@@ribsy True. Part of my issue with Instax is that I am old enough to have used Polaroid films when they still were making their peel apart 4x5 films and I really need to rethink my expectations of current instant films. And I need to work more to play to the strengths of Instax rather than treating it as some "lesser" polaroid. Some of my contemporaries spend a lot of time bemoaning the films we don't have anymore and I think that is not very productive. I do miss a few films but I also have no way to bring them back, so, for me, I have to find what current films will let me make the photos I want to make today. Thankfully there are enough. I do think there are great photos being made with Instax, I just haven't made any yet.
I’m from France and I used to live right on the other side of the Channel (Dieppe) I lived in Brighton during a few months. I went there so many times. I love this city so much. I know it way better than where I’m living. Never heard about this big japanese community, but it was a long time ago so… don’t know…
It is interesting that lomography is making these back available to a lot of youtube presenter but can't seem to get them to the people that have already preordered them. First they wrote it was definitely going to be April 2021 for the early group, then it was going to be, for sure, August 2021. Of course, they didn't meet either of those. Now it appears that people who ordered in China will get theirs ahead of people who ordered in the USA. Now they are taking about late November/December 2021 before the USA pre-orders will be serviced. I'm willing to make a bet that they will miss that date also. Yet, in spite of not being able to meet deadlines they keep sending units to be reviewed. These reviews are a bit frustrating as one can see potential but one has no one of getting to it as the vendor keeps missing delivery dates. Maybe they should have been made in VietNam or India rather than China. Shame as the idea is super.
@@ribsy i shoot instax in their cameras already for a longtime, i am looking forward to receiving the graflock back and using it on my mamiya universal/polaroid 600
I am going to be ordering one of these LOMO instax backs for my 4x5. Any metering tips would be much appreciated. I have never shot with Instax film before. I have a Pentax and Gossen spot meters.
I’d go absolutely insane trying to get a decent instant photo like that! Super excited that Lomography is doing things like this! And yes, seagulls are total assholes!!!
i've shot oodles of instax wide and have never kept it in the dark while it developed; it has always developed without issue. seems like an unnecessary step with no discernible gain.
we need more feasting on film!! favourite videos on youtube!
film and food! thats what i call love!!!
keep it up man and thank u!
I really appreciate it 😀 there is a whole playlist there for ya and more coming!

Fair points. The beauty of all this is that instax is a cheaper way to practice 4x5. Film isn’t too expensive AND no developing necessary

By now you know instax has very little dynamic range. Shoot with the sun on your back, the film just can't deal with the bright areas.
