    Something often overlooked from the community. At this time I only get review laptops from Eluktronics, HIDevolution and Gigabyte. I’m trying to get some from HP. Lenovo, Dell and Acer are not an option at this time.
    Over the course of my channel I have bought the majority of my laptops to review. I couldn’t afford this then and I certainly can’t now.
    There’s ZERO backend cash from manufacturers to make these videos. It’s RUclips and Amazon, that’s it.
    So far this year I’ve covered an Alienware 51m, Clevo P775, MSI GT76 Titan, Aero 17 (late last year) and both MAX laptops from Eluktronics.
    It’s not easy trying to get review units as a small channel. While the big channels get bigger mine limps along. So before you go busting my balls realize you probably don’t really understand how this works.

      Most people probably don’t pay attention to you sub number and just base it on your videos. And too be fair you’re a lot more thorough than many of the big wigs in the tech world.
      That being said I still see a lot of people asking for free hand outs to reviewers as they think they just get these machines for free to keep. So a lot of silly minded folk out there.
      You may not be able to review every laptop out there, but you do a lot of the high profile ones that people are interested in. So there’s plenty of information on you channel to make informed decisions. 😉

      Cockleton It would only be through HIDevolution. Asus doesn’t send units direct. They come from 3rd party sources. Same with MSI. There’s a few exceptions but they’re few and far between.

    Great review, this helped me make my laptop purchase decision. I finally pulled the trigger on the Max-15 with the RTX 2060. Loving it so far, best all-around laptop IMO. No issues with Windows Hello on the chin cam. Great build quality, very lightweight. I get 6 hours of casual use on battery. I got the liquid metal upgrade and highly recommend it. I get great thermals after hours of gameplay in RDR2 getting 70-80 FPS on high settings (under 75C for both CPU and GPU). I did set a custom voltage curve on the GPU to remove power limiting and undervolt the CPU to -.125V. I run the game on Turbo mode, auto fan, and limit the CPU to 45 W. Very happy with the device, as long as you are willing to do some tweaking, but this is to be expected with laptops in general.

    • @kenjithemilkman

      are you able to document how you did this in detail? i have the same laptop but im not too happy with the performance.. and thermals

    • @maxshwang
      @maxshwang 4 года назад

      @@kenjithemilkman When you say you are not happy with the performance, can you elaborate how so? What games are you playing, what applications are you running, and what temperatures are you seeing? What performance modes are you using, and have you done any tweaking? I used Throttlestop to: undervolt the CPU by -.125V, set PL1 and PL2 to 45 watts, capped the maximum CPU boost clock speeds to 4.0 GHz. Using MSI voltage curve editor I capped the GPU clock speed to 1575 MHz at .793V. Your mileage may vary with the voltage curve settings and you will have to dial that in according to what works for you. Bob of All Trades has tutorials on using both pieces of software mentioned above. Also, I use Turbo mode when I play games. The MAX-15 has a relatively thin chassis compared to the MECH-15, in order to achieve thermal reduction you will have to do some tweaking to tame the CPU and GPU. I believe the MAX-15 can run both Performance and Turbo modes up to 100 watts on the CPU, this is a lot of power and in my opinion way too much for this laptop to handle. If you don't feel like going to such lengths to tweak your laptop, maybe you can try running on Office mode, I believe that limits the CPU to 35 watts and should reduce temperatures.

    • @kenjithemilkman
      @kenjithemilkman 4 года назад

      @@maxshwang oi have the equivalent of the Max 15, with 10875h and 2070 with liquid metal. Im just trying to keep temperatures under 70c because im not a big fan of fan noise. i set undervolt to around -0.136 @ 4.0 but the temps are a little toasty to say the least.... around 75c during gaming by my standards (on max fan its around 72c) at this setting dota 2 runs at around 140-170 fps which is great actually haha. For the amount i paid for this laptop i expected alot more, because I have a 2700x with a 1080ti. Should have done alot more research, honestly would have been pretty satisfied with a 1660ti laptop. Anyways I'm still happy, just its my fault i didnt go in-depth on undervolting etc before buying my first gaming laptop.
      Before I saw your reply i didnt even know undervolt was possible on this model, because of Comet lake lock etc but apparently Throttlestop works

      @@kenjithemilkman Oh I have different hardware, I've got the 9750H and 2060. So right there your components will run hotter than mine out of the box. In RDR2, my CPU is running

    • @kenjithemilkman
      @kenjithemilkman 3 года назад +1

      @@maxshwang I expected the MAX 15 to be alot thinner, around the level of the macbook, alas it wasnt.. Id be happier with the equivalent of a Mech 15 honestly (other models don't offer liquid metal). with the 10875 cranked to 4.1 Ghz on Throttlestop and on max fans plus laptop cooler it maxes out at about 80-81C which is stil pretty great when i run modern warfare at about 100fps-150 fps depending on what is happening on screen. on dota2 its about similar which is 100 fps-180fps depend on what happens on screen. Got the GPU at 1620mhz clock at 0.786v and it doesnt even hit 70C on dota2. Only Doom Eternal and Modern warfare works the cards. I'm actually really happy with my purchase, this laptop runs at the same level as my 2700x and 1080ti and gets the same frames (except PC is on 1440 instead of 1080p). Im not getting a laptop without liquid metal again. Its very impressive.
      if i want to run it around 70c id just clock it to 3.9 or 3.8 and theres only a few less frames.

  • @OWNORDISOWN
    @OWNORDISOWN 4 года назад +7

    I agree that it makes sense to apply liquid metal , if helps the CPU hold a higher boost clock in CPU grunt work and maintain reasonable temps. When the watts is lower the lower CPU temp will help lower the GPU temperature too . For a $50 upgrade it's a no brainer in my opinion.

So I try to balance out the explanation best as I can while keeping that in mind. Nothings worse than spending all this time on a review and then a month later it’s no longer relevant.

    Replaced two 8gb ram sticks and SSD for OS in my older 13r3 laptop , now it's running hotter , I can't figure out why. It's not hot as in thermally limited , just hotter than it used to ran.
    It used to sit in the mid 30s-low 40s just browsing youtube etc. Now it sits in the mid 50s and there is always a 10-14 temp difference between core #1 and core #3. Showing 73c high for core #1 and 60c high for core #3 , why the 17 degree difference?
    Perhaps a repaste and flush out the fans is in order.

    Hey man I'm in a hurry to get a new laptop after my razer exploded to work on dev work and game. (as a razer fan boi since 2013 I highly recommended not getting the blade, it looks amazing but it's lifespan is shitty.) I'm torn between the mag and max 15, I can't stand big screens cause i feel like I'm in more control of a small screen (wtf?). I do all steps and fields of game dev (from music producing with ableton to map and model rendering to AI programming). I love both laptops and the max comes at every spec advantage (and price advantage!) with 2060 as to the 1660 mag thats the 100 dollars more. The biggest cons of the max are the dumbass camera, dumbass number pads, no ver with matte black and no logo, and absense of thunderbolt connection. Battery life is a big oof cause 3 hours is actually really bad. Thunderbolt is also big cause I use the Razer core gpu rig when rendering, but I'm pretty sure the 2060 on the max can really handle anything I give it. Can I get some advice? @@BobOfAllTrades Thank you for your help!
      The issue is I've already watched your amazing and informative videos many times, still can't decide.
      As I live in London I have to order the MAX-15 equivalent model from PCSpecialist, which is the Vyper III.
      The new model shows a 10875H 8 core CPU, mini-DP are gone replaced by a TB3 port which I discovered is tied to NVidia GPU luckily (need this for VR).
      I can't understand if PCS made any customisation to bios/software like Eluktronics did.
      Also, on PCS forum the MAX-15 keys lettering starts to wear after just 1 month of use, which isn't ideal.
      I like the MAG-15 keyboard deck and keys (I'm not a fan of translucent keys on MAX-15), the bigger battery.
      The big cons for me on the MAG-15 it's the older and less capable hardware. As I've planned to keep the machine for at least 3-5 years.
      The Max-P GPU in the MAX-15 is another big pro as well.
      For my usage, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, After FX, Capture One, Blender and AAA games I'd probably benefit from better specs on the MAX-15.
      I also prefer the darker grey finish on the MAX-15 than black on the Mag-15.
      Comparing the prices, the XMG Fusion 15 (MAG-15) with 2070 Max-Q costs me 1720 euros against 1630€ for the Vyper III (MAX-15), the last one with 3 years of warranty.
      From an economic standpoint the MAX-15 has more clear benefit in terms of power/money spent.
      Sorry for the long comment, hope this will help other users to make a decision in a similar situation.

    • @TheMash84
      @TheMash84 4 года назад

      @@BobOfAllTrades At the end I went for the MAX-15.
      I preferred the max performance, hoping the UK version of the chassis will allow to obtain a good level of performance with less throttling as possible.
      If I'll have the time I'll post a video with some thoughts and tests (I'll do my best as I'm not a reviewer!).
      I'll probably compare it on performance with an old 6th Skylake i5 to discover how much improvement there is in 5 generations of Intel CPUs in real world scenarios (Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Encoding, 3D, some gaming).
      Thanks for your time Bob!
