it's not an exotic scale, it's a harmonic minor. the separation between the six and seven is one half step more than other scales, it's always used for middle eastern imitation music. how authentic that notion is i don't know. Bach used this scale as did other baroque composers, it fell from fashion as things do in art and is mostly used for a 'foreign' sound, usually in movies and TV. absolutely great. do another one, a very talented bunch.
The ottoman empire encompassed a good deal of Southern and central Europe at the onset of the baroque era, The cultural influence was there, and just as today, the "new sound" was attractive and emotionally evocative. Western culture and music are enriched by the contributions of those "foreigners". The Moors were in Spain for 700 years and that influence on Spanish music has become its most defining characteristic. You can hear the Ottoman influence throughout the classical period. Bach devised the modern Even-tempered scale and we lost the Modes that were dependent on Key, but the tone deviations were very small. The twelve "half steps" that comprise the musical scale are nearly universal , though not of exactly the same size everywhere and at all times.
Very accurate. In fact Indian classical music has a raga based on the harmonic minor sound, which is called Raga Kirwani. But then again, it takes a Jimmy Page to make something as grand and yet groovy as Kashmir.
