It turns out the REAL grunge was the friends we met along the way
Realistically more like the friends we lost

Grunge is a marketing term... it was music plain and simple
Y'all can stop commenting now. This can't be topped.
I actually enjoyed the grunge episode and was grateful that the JHS squad put effort it doing these fun videos promoting music, bands, pedals and sounds from a generation. I was excited seeing this episode and it made me happy.
Same!
Yep
If you are happy was it grunge?
Me, too. Some ppl take their Grunge way too seriously
After enduring a decade of MTV hair bands, it was "refreshing" to hear the music of the early 90s, no matter what you call it.
@@AzathothsAlarmClock Yep... and how clever
@@AzathothsAlarmClock No not really. Early 00s rock was so weak I almost can't believe it. Even the more alternative and prog bands I liked were making stinkers.
As a 62-1/2 year old now , all I can say is that whole Seattle Scene blew the established rock of the radio at that time right off the airwaves in most of the U.S. I for one , enjoyed the newness and needed to find out more about where all of this newfound music was coming from. I had just moved from San Diego up to North shore of Lake Tahoe & only good rock station was coming out of Reno at that time in ‘91 . Really opened my eyes & ears as to what was just beginning to be a new Era in music . The music was fresh, raw, & in most cases pretty well done considering it was coming from a bunch of 20 something year old kids from “ Nowhere” in America. Sorry that most bands “ Crashed & burned out” only a decade or so afterwards. Lots of talented musicians lost to sudden wealth and fame to only Die of drugs , or suicide. Rest In Peace to all who came & went during this period. Miss that kind of Energy in today’s music. Just my views , take it or leave it …. C-ya👍
There has always been excellent music in every era, you just have to work at uncovering it (which is fun!). Mainstream music has always been a very mixed bag, in every era 80-90 percent of it is garbage. But some people love garbage, leave them to it and just go your own way and dig for fire! 🕳 🔥
Would LOVE an STP episode! Totally agree with Josh on how genius their music is.
I never saw STP as grunge. Or grunge light.
STP made some great records and took a lot of garbage in the press.
Scott’s issues aside, they made some great
music.
Purple and Tiny Music…. Are great records!
@@jeffball6656 Just a great rock band! I was listening to Core the other day and forgot how much I loved Scott Weiland.
I always liked their sound on Core. Eric Kretz is a very underrated drummer.
They were like a not quite as talented Zeppelin. And I mean by a small margin. The Deleo bros are monsters!
@@AllofJudea
Have you heard the Trip the Witch record Dean Deleo made with Tom Bukovac?
Loved the Ep
Frankly, my bassist and I loved the deep dive into different grunge sounds ^^ would love you to continue these “birds eye view, capture the spirit” of a genre from Josh’s perspective alongside the more “objective, historical deep dives” that educate and inspire those of us who didn’t live and play guitar during those special historical moments.
Everyone at JHS is absolutely on the right track. Keep going, Josh, Nick, Addison, Joshua, the entire JHS fam! keep going.
Turns out all that grunge era angst never went away, Josh.
Tossing my hat into the ring to say that yes, STP deserves way more love
I'm so with nearly everything you've said bro....I'm 48 and watched the whole movement come and go during my hey day and having seen nearly all of the bands mentioned in this discussion...the difference nobody is considering is the shift in CULTURE that transcends the music itself at the time... certainly aspects of grunge still exist today in music so I'm not sure it really ever disappeared as much as it just evolved into something else
Totally agree, I’m 46 and right with you on this
Totally agree.. I was a shy, lonely, borderline autistic 15 years old, "Smells like teen spirit" hit.. a few months later, classmates were talking to me & I started making friends.. So it definitely changed the world around me.
People who lost it, obviously have no idea who you are, what you are about, and what your passion is for music. I love certain sounds, but there is a healthy balance needed for the pursuit of emulation.
Music is art and interpretive. What it means to each of us is unique and should be celebrated in context of our experience. Love your content, rise above any of the hate!
If anything this proves people are still passionate about grunge (better or worse) and that in itself is AWESOME. The imprint it made on music history is permanent and important.
Here in Brazil, about the year 2000 a scene of post grunge begin to change my city (a little city in Northeast), and that was the time I learned guitar and I make friends out of the school, was the best adolescence someone could have.
A friend and me watched your video (the one with the grunge bible) and we laugh a lot, it was very good to listen someone who understands teach how to achieve those timbers we never could in the 2000's. (But it was fun at that time, just like you in your time)
I hope young musicians watch your videos and be less frustrated about what means to play guitar or be in a band. At the end of the day, we got to have fun.
Your videos are awesome, let the haters hate, they aren't interested in music.
josh is literally so naturally funny what a chaotic livestream
To whoever asked about instrumental bands, if you happen to see this: if you like Explosions in the Sky I’d recommend Red Sparowes, Caspian, Grails, MONO, Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Mogwai, Pijn, and maybe Russian Circles.
Checkout The Sleep Design, and If These Trees Could Talk
I would recommend Yona-Kit, Painkiller, Ground Zero, ZU, Volcano The Bear and Nihiloxica
Ignore the haters. Love what you do! ❤️
STP are awesome, I agree with your Led Zeppelin comparison. The Deleo brothers are amazing musicians.
This^
I've been comparing STP to Led Zeppelin for years! A bass player no one seems to remember, but is amazing at both bass and piano, an amazing guitarist, a great vocalist who exuded sex appeal, and a true Bonham type of drummer to round them off, they are the ninties Led Zeppelin.
STP wasn't really grunge at the time, but got that label because most people only heard Plush on the radio, which many mistook for Pearl Jam when it first appeared on the airwaves.
I saw an interview with dave grohl and he was talking about the first time he heard Black Hole Sun. How it married the Beatles and Black Sabbath in a way that became the ultimate example of a grunge song
Grunge as a musical movement is a very lovely sentiment. Anyone offended by the episode doesn’t really have grunge in their hearts. Grunge = passion, acceptance, earnestness, adventure and love with a dash of cynicism and skepticism. You could play whatever you wanted, as sloppy as you want, as long as it was good and had passion, to paraphrase Kurt. The episode was a lovely little throwback to the 90’s and I’m here for it anytime.
This is like one of those statements like “real punk music is....”. Grunge is lo-fi, anti-shred-technique, anti-polish/sheen
Grunge is such a Gen X genre. We all wanted to be individual while wearing our plaid flannel and each person’s “grunge” would likely be at odds with other’s version of grunge. Great episodes! Thanks so much for sharing!!
It is funny how the entire "we are going to wear what we normally wear instead of a costume" then was changed into someone else's costume pretending to be normal dudes.
I don't know about you but I wore my dad's hand me down flannel because it was fuckin cold. that's all. Individuality is in the mind not the clothing.
@@sagittated you have no idea dude. shhhh
Metal had “uniforms” too, you always end up conforming to not conform. I always think of Lars from Rancid, poster child for punk ascetic. Yet rancid wrote plenty of poppy ass songs. I loved them, but a lot of people get up their own asses about everything. See straight-edge movement, if you need an example. Very hollier than thou, vibe
@@ryanwiseman9141 Rancid is terrible and Lars is a huge poser. We all laughed when they came out. Every kid started wearing a Rancid shirt. What a joke. Operation Ivy was good, Rancid? NO!
Grunge is, what punk was to music. A expression of identity
JOSH JOSH JOSH!! For the people don’t understand the show.. just don’t even worry about them. As a long time fan of the show i totally understand what you guys were doing here. Don’t allow projection of misery to take from your enjoyment of doing what you love on this show !
STP!! Yes, do a whole episode on STP!!
Banjo + Grunge = 16 Horsepower (Low Estate or Secret South) - not from Seattle but definitely worth checking
And don't worry about the comments Josh, you did a great job as always ❤
Heck yes! “Give my conscience a pounding!”
Do that STP episode! Completely agree with the sentiment.
Christmas '91, I was 16, my older brother who had been living in Tacoma, WA gets me 2 cassettes for Christmas. Nirvana-Nevermind and Alice In Chains-Facelift. By summer 92' I picked up the Singles Soundtrack and got into Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam. That soundtrack is 100% Grunge to me, w Hendrix as the Godfather. The one big exception: Paul Westerberg.
a gentleman is a man who knows how to play the banjo but refrains from doing so
If I go back, Wipers had a pretty grungy sound and style pretty early. Their influence on Nirvana is pretty clear, and not just because of the covers.
I agree the wipers is one of the original grunge movement bands and most people have never heard of them
It's just plain odd how so many "experts" leave comments on videos claiming they know more than the host. Yet, where are their deeply researched videos so we can all scrutinize their content?
You do great work, Josh! I've learned a ton from your channel, cheers!
@@stoneysdead689 I have read your comment a few time and can't see how it applies to mine.
@@stoneysdead689 you read what you wanted to read. My comment is about people coming into a comment section and ranting about the person doing the video being an idiot, or not knowing what they are talking about.

So, we are having two completely different conversations.

lol this was a fun experiment
Please do an STP episode. I had a very short lived STP tribute band. If you play guitar, go learn any of their songs on guitar and you learn how incredibly creative the DeLeo brothers are. Insanely underrated. Everyone claimed they ripped from other bands of the time but I think they were focused on themselves and really couldn't be boxed go listen to tiny music from the Vatican gift shop.... That album is like a Beatles album that came out in the 90s. It's punk, it's melodic, rock, song writing. There aren't any bands with that cohesive creativity anymore
I'm in an STP cover band too, homie. Totally agree with you.
They *were* highly derivative, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Mosaic is a derivative artform. So are Jazz and Hip Hop. I enjoyed STP's mosaic of grunge/alternative.
@@NoBrakes23 I know what you mean. Derivative or not, they're very recognizable. They had SONGS. Anytime they come on the radio or a playlist you know it's them. "Creep", "Interstate Love Song", "vasoline", "plush" holy shit
Even into their later career songs like "sour girl" and "days of the week" we're top notch.
They took the sound and actually grew musically. I think the first record was just their way in. Great band with underrated everybody.

I loved the grunge episode. I don’t listen to it much anymore but still have a huge soft-spot for it being the reason I picked up and learned guitar/bass when I was like 12. My first band ever was in 8th grade and basically we all learned how to play our instruments by just learning every Nirvana song ever written and then eventually just played their riffs backwards and called them originals lol
I think your video captured the spirit of grunge, the “find some affordable stuff and go make messy, noisy rock in a garage with your friends,” much more than if it had been “here’s the exact pedal and settings they used, you need this if you want to sound like them.” Great video. I sent it to a few friends I thought would appreciate it too.
Thanks for reading out my spicy comment :) I really enjoyed the first episode, and this episode was a great follow up discussion. This music means a lot to all of us who grew up with it.
Grunge is an idea that there are no rules when it comes to music, which is why everyone has a specific, intense and deeply solidified belief on what does and doesn't constitute Grunge; a set of 'Grunge Rules', if you will
What nirvana did very well was use dynamics. Clean/ dirty,soft/loud, happy/ sad or angry. It is all a kind of dynamics. The Beatles used it as well as many others. Grunge was a marketing tool to raise the price of thrift store jeans and flannel shirts we all got for Xmas ( and did not want in the 1970’s)
"Perfect Pitch" is defined as the sound a Banjo makes when it hits the side of the dumpster.
Grunge flavors still exist heavily in the modern Stoner/Punk/Shoegaze type genres that have a pretty large following amongst the online/local scenes.
As the description you read about Grunge being light to heavy shifts and such is true, does that make Led Zeppelin Grunge? I love your show, this episode reminds me of those terrible letters to the editor pages in the old guitar magazines. Keep it up JHS, best content on RUclips.

I am going to full on “Leave Brittany alone!!!” in defense of Josh Scott.
Josh, you inspire me in music, and I’m brand identity. Your drive for radical collaboration is amazing and if you have a hot take on grunge, these humans will get over it
Smashing Pumkins weren't grunge...but if you were a grunger, you were into the Smashing Pumpkins.
Honestly I think people just get an endorphins rush from being angry. There are also apparently a lot of humourless people out there.
What is grunge?
Baby, don't hurt me
Don't hurt me, no more
What is grunge?
Tom Waits was the Grungiest long, long ago! Dig those Marc Ribot solos.
The grunge episode gets my stamp of approval despite my opinion being entirely unimportant and no one should care. I've not seen a JHS show episode that I didn't think had value. But this video should have been titled "Why does Josh allow the haters to bother him? (Even with a vastly superior, encyclopedic knowledge of guitar pedals, we are all still human and that's ok)". I would have been less disappointed if that question was left unanswered. :D Grateful for everything else that I have learned from ya'll. Keep the chin up and the facts coming and I'll keep pining for my next JHS pedal purchase. I think Muffuletta is at the top of the list... Would be the Twin Twelve if it were still in production!
So basically, you featured your personal favs from that era, showcased how to get some similar sounds, and snobby nerds took it personally that it wasn't a "Grunge History from A to B". G-d bless you Josh. We are the same age, and while we definitely don't have exact similar tastes in music, we do have alot of crossover. I don't understand where alot of these basement dwellers get the chutzpah to come to your channel to lecture you. They don't realize that it's much more of an indictment to them than it is to you or JHS.
Anyways, thank you and the JHS crew for everything you do. Please don't let these petulant people make you second guess what you all do, because it's solid and it's great.
As Steve Martin said on the classic 'Let's Get Small' album. "You can't play a sad song on the banjo! [banjo plays] 'Oh death, and grief, and sorrow...and murder [banjo lick]"
I always thought grunge was a bit of a catch-all term for the breakthrough wave of underground/alternative that finally surged into popularity in the early 90’s. You have bands that did punk, metal, rock, more of 80’s indie stuff, all that. Like what was said, more of a movement than any specific, tangible style or genre.
Music for Airports reference. I’m now a fan for life.
Grunge was a fashion movement just like punk and goth. So so funny how invested people are in this terminology.
Josh jumped into the only thing GenX truly cares about. It seems we are a generation that doesn't care if we are forgotten, but don't you dare forget about *insert favorite band here*. Even Ken burns would end up adding someone we would disagree with, and likely forget one or two that some would consider seminal.
To keep with a theme, Alice in Chains is my favorite band of the era, but what I have found is that everyone disagrees on whether they are or aren't grunge. The funny thing is, that I don't care what you call them, as long as you know of them. You can even hate them, and I am okay with it. As a child of the northwest, I think I agree with the comment you read that it's an asthetic. I am not a gatekeeper. Grunge is more than just the music.
Oh, the guy that said Andrew Wood was in Mookie Blaylock is mistaken. Mookie Blaylock we're straight up Pearl Jam, until they changed their name. Andrew Wood's death was why the MLB guys became PJ...
This whole rant just makes me want to hear Vitalogy over and over :)
Mudhoney in the record time was enough! I went and listened to superfuzzbigmuff, and loved it!!
When I wanna play the bass line to Bush's Comedown, I just play a laid back version of the riff from Bon Jovi's "You Give Love a Bad Name" and call it close enough.
Maaan, that Grunge 101 episode was my absolutely favourite!
So I watched this episode last week and ever since have been feeling guilty. Like I know Josh didn’t mean to overlook the Screaming Trees - my comment on the now “infamous” Grunge Bible episode - was a cheeky little joke. For my sins, I have 3 JHS pedals on my board - because, one, the Artificial Blonde and Lucky Cat, combined my Boss Super Chorus helps create some awesome Midnight Oil like tones. Yes, an Australian here. And two, the Clover helps turn my Fender and Marshall combo into a Vox, when I need a “Vox”. Lastly, Josh, how about an episode with Dan from That Pedal Show exploring the sounds of Midnight Oil (Jim Moginie and Martin Rotsey) and other Australian guitarists - so many awesome pedals coming out of the land down under! PS: Josh, your passion for creativity and encouraging creativity is infectious - keep it up mate! 😉
Josh: “So what IS grunge?”
HE SAID THE TITLE IN THE EPISODE!!!
Possibly the book is guilty of trying to bring grunge to the masses, like you did with the video. Flavor to taste 😋, cant please everyone all the time. Much love JHS keep killing it!
Side note, my mom always called most of this music Dirge Rock, which I always liked
“All it takes for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing.” Thanks for fighting the good fight Josh; no thanks to Joe bonamassa for bailing :/
If anyone wants to know "grunge" as in depth, you can watch the documentary "HYPE" by Doug Pray (1996). That would explain what bands are in it and the timeline, even since the term "grunge" didn't exist yet. It'll tell you the influences of music to it, genres, movements, fashion styles and the paradox behind it.
As a generation that grew up in the 90's and outside of US (I'm from Asia). I'm actually very happy if there are questions, curiosity or friction about grunge in this era. Because that's part of the essence of grunge, questioning everything: about individuals, about society, about everything. Big thanks to Josh.
i don't like putting rock music in a boxes. As a side note, check out The Scientists featuring Kim Salmon. They were a post-punk band from Perth, Western Australia in the late '70's early 80's. Lots of Grunge guys were influenced by The Scientists !! Here''s an excerpt from the Sydney Morning Herald dated June 11 2021 "Veterans of Seattle’s grunge era, Mudhoney, honed their early sound in the swampy terrain of the Scientists and two decades after The Human Jukebox album was released, it was Mudhoney coaxing the Scientists back out of retirement to play a couple of shows in Europe in 2006."
Throwing this out there, Josh. Many RUclipsrs find reading comments upsetting, and corrosive to their creativity. Some RUclipsrs either don’t read any comments or they have someone on their staff who reads them and filters them so only useful or constructive comments are brought back to the creators.
Please consider something like this because the comments are understandably upsetting. It’s ok to have someone filter out troll comments. Reading all of them is a sure way to make yourself upset. There’s no need to make yourself upset.
Your knowledge of pedals, the music industry, and the history of the music industry is undisputedly awesome. You don’t have to read this stuff or prove yourself, you’re already awesome. You can’t fix or convince everyone, jerks are jerks. Give them attention and they’ll just grow bigger for the attention.
You don’t have to feel this frustration.
Totally agree with you on STP. It’s sad Scott Weiland couldn’t maintain b/c they were indeed amazing. Saw them a few times in their prime and there was no one better live. And their albums were just art.
Grunge is but a fleeting illusion to be pursued but never obtained.
Josh, please ignore all the negative comments! Unfortunatelly, some people just live and breathe to be negative and criticize people who have actually accomplished something with their lives. That’s the only way they feel good about themselves. That was a great episode, you have an amazing show and your channel has the best educational value right next to Rick Beato. You are running a business here, of course you will promote your pedals. I love Grunge and that was a great episode. And you know what- please make a follow up episode, maybe band specific ones. We need more Grunge in our lives!!
Banjo, bicycles and grunge??? Heaven!
Let’s be real. It’s a marketing term. Like all similar terms. Music is just sounds.
Hi Josh, I’m glad we could be here for you for your counseling . My fee is 160$ an hour , the video is 46 minutes , Paypal me the 120$ and it’s all good 😊. Both episodes where cool . You’re doing great kiddo !
Dude, I get paid in pedals. Way better deal
I did agree with a Green River mention. BUT, I don't think that Pixies need to be mentioned just b/c Kurt loved them. I'm not even sure if I would have ever described Alice In Chains as grunge, just b/c they're a bit more metal than the other bands. But I don't care if people call them grunge. Thanks buddy, I love all the grunge talk, I love most of these bands still.
You missed one point:
To play Grunge authentic you gotta play a maple neck guitar and elder body. Its all in the wood, not the pedals.
Its all about tonewood.
Presidents of the United Stata were actually an og Seattle grunge band, so yeah, is say they count. They didn't make it big till later, but the members were all part of the scene.
I’ve only been wearing black hoodies and black tees since I noticed King Josh wearing them.
The real question still Remains: Is the Grunge Pedal even grunge?!
It is not. lol
I got one of those for some reason when I ordered a few items from MF 25 years ago. It sat in the box for 20 years until I happened to come across it when cleaning out my attic. So, for shits and grins, I plugged it in and played it for a bit. It was more like DOD's version of the Metal Zone. 🤣
Grunge occurs when after 4 days of mowing lawn, working on the car, not bathing , having problems in the bathroom, and sleeping in my clothes... It doesnt smell good and if it goes on too long it can even be painful. Its either that or the purplish stomp box -Its your choice.
Tiny music is so damn good
You really should do a whole episode on Smashing Pumpkins because their use of pedals is legendary.
That whiskey collection is impressive Josh.
I see most of this music as "alternative" and really look at the Seattle scene in particular as "Grunge" and being a sub-category of alternative.
Reading Festival 1992 ....peak grunge
Josh PLEEEEASE do something on Stone Temple Pilots. I've always had the same sentiments about them being the "new" LZ. I was absolutely obsessed with them, they were the band that got me into music
Josh, no good deed goes unpunished!
Can't believe that the people got so toxic for absolutely no reason. I really enjoyed the Episode. ✌🏼
@@ghostmall2421 true that...keyboard warriors everywhere 😁
Aw stumbling backwards in to a conversation about self perception and identity politics (via musical preference) while mistakingly thinking it was about music. The Joy of Grunge.
The best part of this is that we had the same arguments when i was in my teens. Grunge lovers arguing with other grunge lovers which band is grunge and which is not. I will say, rock bands did grunge songs, grunge bands did rock songs.. stone temple pilots tripping on a whole in a paper heart was pretty grunge, and they had a handful of others.
It sure seems like a lot of folks who watched the grunge episode didn't actually watch the grunge episode. Scott, you were pretty clear that you weren't doing an exhaustive historical deep dive. You were pretty clear that you weren't trying to recreate the verbatim rigs of various bands, but rather utilizing using currently available (& often, more versatile) gear to, "generalize and get a vibe that I like," from each band. I really enjoyed the episode and totally appreciated the heart behind it!
Keep up the fine work y'all & don't mind the haters.
Also, the counter-trolling of playing Creed songs was hilarious.
It was a great episode. Not that anyone needs another guy Dave Grohl's age pointing out that Grunge bands thought they (we, I was in the mix) were punk bands or rock bands, but it's really true. Mudhoney existed well before "Grunge". Our favorite bands (or we sounded like we did because we listened to) were folks like The Replacements, Black Flag, The Wipers, and the masters of loud-quiet-loud, the Pixies. None of this is right or wrong, because it was all made up by the industry. But the music was great, and I loved seeing you get the tones we got with like three shitty pedals.
That Grunge Episode was one of the best things I saw on youtube ever, I watched it several times, Kool Thing Jam like 40 times :D Keep doing such content Josh, it's great and we need it. But I guess no simply walks into Grunge. P.S. Alice In Chains is not Grunge, it's mistake :D
I was in my early 40s when grunge came out. I had grew up with what is now classic rock in my opinion music by the mid 80s had stalled. Then grunge came along and I was like YES....thanks Josh
Claiming "Dustin, the Wind" for a band name!
I'm down that the comments seemed to really bring you down. I loved the video and the JHS show is one of my top RUclips channels, my favourite music channel for sure! The 2 JHS Pedals I have are my favoutire (Unicorn & Morning Glory)... not sure what my 3rd might be... looking at the PNP.
As a grunge band we get asked the same question a lot lol
I liked the episode. My adolescence was early 90s, this is the music of me youth. We gotta save the grunge.
I was born in Seattle in 1961. I lived in Belltown kind of Denny regrade where a lot of folks hung out for every band you heard of that were 10 bands you never heard of that were so many bands coming around at that time of the band scene in Seattle versus very incestuous, people would be in multiple bands. Another one band morphed into another.
If anybody wants a deeper dive in to the topic, Hype! Is a great documentary about grunge, and one of my favorite movies in general about rock n roll.
Hey Josh, regarding the "SoUnDgArDeN dIdN't UsE jHs PeDaLs" comments:
with the fame of these older pedals sometimes making cheap gear become ridiculously expensive, I actually appreciate the fact that you used cheaper alternatives. Also, ultimately you're running a pedal company. Of course you show off your own gear. I'd do the same thing if I were you.
I actually want to expand my pedal collection, but want to start with cheap stuff. BOSS and Behringer were definitely high on the list already, but I think it's time to add JHS Pedals to that list. Tinkering with pedals and effects is fun, so I should really get some more! ;-)
I remember seeing a report on nightly news about how Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt were going grunge with stubble
As santa clause was invented by coca-cola, I believe grunge was invented by McDonald's.
Complaining about which petals they used is probably the least grunge thing someone could do
Haters gonna hate, keep up the great work.
P.S. in addition to supplying a comprehensive list of alternative bands that performed from 1985-1992, please send the list of fine liquors on top of your bookshelf.
What I got from that video was that It was fun when you were dunking on the grunge bible.
please do a video on Stone Temple Pilots, I loved them, would like to see their tone dissected
