Something you might find interesting, on all these changes/ Fees that TRUCKS are hit up with. In the publication ( Pacific Maritime) May 2022 issue. The Port of LA and Long Beach are hitting up Trucks on a $10 dollars per TEU import/ Export Container coming and going from Terminal. This is all the zero Emissions by 2035 FEE goes towards the Clean Truck Fund. The article says $90 million can be generated in the first year. The Port has hired Port Check to collect the FEES. The Trucker MUST be Registered in the Port Check BEFORE being able to pick up/ Drop off any Cargo. Trucker my only apply for Exemption if the Truck produces ZERO Emissions or is low- nitrogen Oxide- Emitting. This is all for so called Climate impact. I see it as once again going after trucker ( guy just trying to move containers with used class 8 truck) paying another FEE on top of what say over &7 dollars for Diesel. Just payed that in by passing LA busy area. Northeast in LA county. Going to Phoenix, towing a vehicle to museum in Arizona. Could NOT believe the price of Diesel. The just keep on adding charges to the truckers. He is only moving the CARGO out of clogged Ports, the Truckers are not the problem with climate change.

I've been a professional driver for 20 years. When I first started driving professionally, I had a friend who told me NOT to get into trucking. Here it is 20 years later and I have to thank Ken Harvey for that. Why? Because I've thought about it many times over the years but when you do a search on YT for trucking, good luck finding a single positive story.
Guy is correct on mostly everything he said, I used to think the Same thing as a driver until I seen the way the industry worked. Changed my entire mindset.
I took a run that is offered on a fairly regular basis, and two days later that same load was offered for $1000.00 dollars less. When I asked the broker about this difference, the only thing he could tell me was they covered the loads at that reduced rate. So truck drivers, we are contributing to this downward cycle...
Me and my friend did the same run within a week difference I was getting about 300 less and when I told them they said it was the same run but a different customer I just hung up on him the owner
Shits happening everywhere one month ago i hauled a load for $1650. Last week I was around the same area saw the same load, same broker and it was going for $1200. He said everyone has been moving them for that rate and its mainly big companies hauling them for that rate.

That's why they say there is a shortage of drivers, to get new drivers who are enthusiastic, but are ignorant to the industry. Company drivers are a goldmine for this industry. They receive lower pay for high value loads, if you are a owner operator never work at a outfit that has company drivers, you will lose in the end.

For decades I've been seeing trucks that say "drivers needed!" which just tells me that so many drivers get screwed, the companies can't hold on to enough.
In many cases the big companies hire weekly, not because they can’t retain drivers by treating them fairly, it’s their business model to keep wages low and maximize profit.
I’m a hot shot owner op/ ex fleet owner because I had to park 2 trucks recently. The money doesn’t make since as of late. Then my leased on guys faded out recently as well. Any way, I shoot my shot at every shipper I can. Just recently I was talking to a shipper and he revealed what they paid for that load to be moved.?I was floored and aggressively angry. The broker took 50% of the load!!! I can’t understand how In these hard times people can be so inhumane!! This company is major too!!! The shipper made my company a vendor after that and now they save money on shipping and I make more money. Be vigilant guys. Hang in there!!!!
Yep 👍 I’m a hot shot car hauler and I’ve just been handing out cards to dealerships and guess what? Same story…brokers have been charging them 3 times what I’m willing to haul for…CUT THEM OUT….im not “complaining” I’m cutting throats 😂🤘

I’m a O/O so I’m not on the Brokers side. But Brokers do a lot. They do sales, Billing, Advances. At times they negotiate assessorial charges for you. With that said. I have my own authority and only haul directly for shippers.
Brokers make all of the money, while us sucker truck drivers do all of the work and give up our lives for peanuts. This channel has become the most informative trucking channel on YT!

@@Mr.Beastforpresident take all the risk lol ok. I'm a mid size auto transport broker, and we spend a quarter mil a year on a contingent cargo insurance policy. It's required by our big boy customers. Do you know why we pay so much when "you take all the risk"? Because insurance companies don't pay shit on cargo claims and 80% of carriers aren't cooperative. So either we can shaft our monster customers on damages, or fork out the cash from our own pockets. That is a LARGE part of why serious brokers take more than 10%. RISK MITIGATION. Beyond that, who's to say we're entitled to X%? If my customer is happy paying me $10,000, and I pay the trucker $5,000 and my load is the highest paying load on the board, am I doing something wrong? No, I'm offering the customer great service and convenience, and also paying the trucker more than any other load. Now what?
Hello guys,I am an Owner Operator for the last 6 years and I think that we do not have enough courage to stop this. The day that we decide to block any truck entrance and exit of the whole truck stops asking that rates goes up,Brokers going to continue playing with us.Personally,I never get cheap loads,I do not move the truck if I can get at least $1,000 clean per day.I don't understand being one of the biggest industry in this country,we have to be begging to the brokers to give us + $100 for a load and,many times we lose it because they sell it for $50 less,it's unacceptable,we move AMERICA and many weeks,we are getting a couple more hundred more than a company drivers.Every time that our trucks needs to go to the shop,we do not spend less than a $1,000,just an oil change we are talking about $700 then,what storytelling are they talking about. They depend on us,if we don't move,they are nothing and this is for big companies and company drivers as well,it's embarrasing how big companies just want see their trucks moving,putting in those trucks,drivers with 30 days experience and paying them a couple cents per mile.They're destroying this industry. This is one of the many things that I do when shipper's try to be smart: Let's guess that by my Rate Confirmation I get a load 15,000 pounds,650 miles and it pays $1,950. Once I arrive at the shipper I ask for the weight,if,they say that this load weight 20,000 pounds inmediately I say stop,let me see if I gonna get more money for those extra 5,000 pounds,if the broker doesn't give me at least $ 500 or $600 extra,I leave the load and that's it. Many brokers already know me and they know how I work and beleive me,I won that respect,many times losing money. That is my opinion guys, Have a good day brothers.
I totally agree with this... that extra 5000 pounds per truck gives the shipper a free load for every 5 or 6 trucks.... free loader is the meaning... if they dont agree for a heavier load then move on

Everyone is greedy and will try to make as much as possible. Why would you believe otherwise? It's very simple, don't book it if you don't like the rate. Then the broker will have no choice but to raise the rate. Why take it personally?

Until you can provide the same service that CHR can when they cover 150 shipments per week out of one facility with destinations to everywhere including BFE, I wouldn't call that nuts. Use them to your advantage, they allow you to access lanes that you would never have without them so as long as you're happy with the rate you negotiated then who cares what they got. Sometimes they do lose money just to keep the customer satisfied but I doubt you'd give them a discount. You don't have the same skills they have when getting that freight so yea they're going to be paid for that
simple fix, pull the truck over and DON'T MOVE IT, they did that back in 2008 if i remember right, and it was about truckers not getting paid right so they PULLED THE RIGS OVER until the demands was met. remember if the "rig never moves" stuff wont get restocks, no hospital stuff, NO NOTHING and they have only *so many truckers*

Is there ever going to be a day when the brokers show the price that the shipper is paying for the loads? They need to show the shipper price the same way they show the their price.

The BIG SECRET IS the Driver CAN’T see what the load REALLY Pays. The FAIR thing will be let me see EXACTLY what the Shipper is paying so I can THEN truly know how to FAIRLY BID…He said don’t complain if you agree to take a load. Well, the differences is driver is bidding BLINDLY… if I find out what that load is really paying especially with me carrying MOST of responsibilities for that load. #1 MY LIFE ON DANGEROUS ROADS and other bills!! No doubt I’ll be upset.
If your bidding blindly than you don't know your company does not matter load what matters is what you can haul it for and make money but if you need further help hit me up I'll be glad to tell you a ballpark of what that lanes paying what broker bid what other truckers took loads for in past its a simple search never be afraid to lose a bid if your not gonna make money
Contractors in most industries bid in the blind. If you get an estimate to add a deck to your house the contractors bid blind. The FAIR rate is your cost plus what you believe is an acceptable profit. If you can't get that don't take it.

I'm contracted to a carrier & we get to self dispatch. Other owners have gotten screwed by brokers & have given bad reviews on google & our terminal manager threatened all the owners to cancel their lease if they left bad reviews. Said didnt want us to black listed by those brokers. Makes sense but theres just no recourse. Unless you post those reviews anonymously.

Happens all the damn time...young Brokers think "well the Shipper will give me more volume" so they give them money back...like an idiot because half the time the shipper doesn't move but 1 load per month anyways. Also, several large customers are contracted and a flat percentage / open book contract. Next issue is what dudes saying, the lanes are dictated by what a truck will run it for, so if a broker over pays a driver trying to hook it up and then that customer goes out of business or another broker tells them they are over paying the lane so the shipper fires the broker and goes with the cheapest broker. It's insane how all of this works.
I did this 40 yrs and he is right had my wife and daughter do the home work to keep m 5 trucks going an 20 other trucks running and we did 10percent and being honest works really god
It's a fact that brokers are charging more to the customer and still offer the load for these BS prices to owner operators. I've seen it myself. Cutting the price 600 to 1000 bucks after posting for one price and after you call they say the customer don't want to do it for this price no more they want to do it for a lesser price. If you turn it down they still leave it on the board for a higher price to get the next sucker to call in and try to see if they can get them to take it for that lower price. Bait and switch all the time. Living in their big houses sitting on their arse screwing drivers.
If it says 1000 I always ask for 2000 and when they say 600 I tell them 2500. Then there like I’ll get it moved and I say good luck not on my truck sucker
Cutting the price? What does that even mean? The price they offer you is the price And Why are you mad but at the same time working with them? Nobody is putting a gun to your head telling you that you must book this load with that broker. Are you also mad at the gas stations for not giving you the gas at no charge? Are you mad at Walmart for not selling you that TV at cost? Do you get mad at the tire shop when they don't sell you Bridgestone tires at their cost?
@@stevethomas5209 absolute worst… it was a sherwin Williams paint load that they sold to Landstar for $10k, then Landstar took their cut then it became a $7500 load, then TQL took the load took a huge cut and rebrokered it down to $2900.
The broker should disclose the original contract to the logistic company. Than the broker can take 10%. Also, there should be a minimum cost for reasonable opportunity to make money, all other offers/request should be refused by the broker.
When load is presented to driver it should read: Shipper pays: $6,000 Broker fee 10%: $600 Pay To driver: $5,400 PERIOD. until this happens, trucking will be problematic.
1st I’d like to thank you for your service to us truckers out here making it happen! I’ve been watching you from the beginning & never commented but today I must! Your guest was a huge disappointment. He’s spinning the main point! BROKERS SHOULD BE REGULATED! PERIOD! There’s no regulation so it’s easy for the bad apples to get rich off the backs of truckers. PERIOD! I started in this industry in 2010 with my spouse as Owner Opps leased to a company & we’ve had many roles trying to find out how to win in this business. We’ve even been brokers working directly with shippers/receivers. No matter what the role we experienced regulations only come down on truckers. Everyone else in the game is just playing with money & a truckers time. Brokers & trucking companies have a choice to be fair or not. Truckers have to accept it while we do the hard part & make the sacrifices under some type of regulated compliance.
If the government is funding trucking schools, all of you should call or visit you congressperson and tell them to vote to stop that. We are the majority.
The purpose of brokers back in the day was to connect shippers with truckers but nowadays shippers can just post their loads directly onto the load boards and we as truckers can bid or get the loads without the need of brokers. And the brokers canal find another job or be truckers themselves.
Who’s gonna pay you? Who’s gonna vet you? Who’s gonna do the check calls and check your insurance and decide you’re a good carrier? Apparently the shipper doesn’t want to do that so they hire brokers. Why don’t you become a broker?

Sadly seems like this is a lost cause it only takes one trucker to take that low paying load to keep bringing that rate to the bottom. On the other hand it takes much longer to see that load rate come back from gutter and pay decent. Main thing is when you find a good lane paying good it's just a matter of time for that same load to be dropped down and you are left with finding another one , and this happens all the time .
NEVER take a load for LESS than the 15 day average!!! If ALL drivers would just stick that that one simple rule we'd be alright. Everytime you accept a lower rate you lower the avg. NEVER NEVER NEVER!!!!! accept a load for less than the 15/30 day avg! It's not rocket science. Figure it out!!!!!!!

It is a simple solution, but requires EVERYONE to stick to it, and that will never happen because there is always someone with some reason/excuse for accepting the low ball rate. Organizing drivers is like hearding cats. I'm just trying to get the message out that there is this simple foolproof way to drive the rates back up.

These interviews are great! I have zero interest in actually being a trucker,broker, or the being in the trucking business as a whole but this information is very interesting.
No what you need to do is develop the skills and relationships needed to obtain that high paying freight. Why would anyone want to use some unprofessional trucker with no business sense or technology when they can use a huge brokerage or carrier that can provide every service needed with the technology and extra attention? Nobody is going to pay steak prices and only get spaghetti

Fair? The broker should be forced to disclose what the load pays and the percentage taken by the broker. The guy throws out the 10% and no one thinks 10-20% is a lot right? Do the math. Mortgage brokers are limited to what they can be paid per contract and the same should be for freight brokers.

And the price of the shipment doesn’t really matter right because you can’t dictate what that broker can make. If the other trucks around you will haul it for 500$ then that’s the price of the load. If the other trucks said we ain’t hauling for nothing less than 1000$ then it’s 1000$. you can ask the shipper you can ask the broker the price of the lane.
Broker fees should be capped at 10%. That alone will lead to higher freighter rates. Brokers are digging into truck driver’s pockets under the guise of operating expenses. I could write a book about this bs but I’ll just say good bye.
40:15 - “sometimes I don’t make any $” referring to loads 41:10 - “if broker says I’m not making nothing, they’re probably not a reliable broker” I feel like some of the stuff this guy said was spot on, but a lot of other stuff was defending his broker side. As a broker/trucker it’s obvious you still want to protect the easier form of income. Notice in the beginning he also said 10%. However, later Alex caught onto him on how he’ll have an extra $300 to play with. On a $3000 load, that’s a total of 20% he’s actually looking to make. I appreciate the fact he came on here to try and be transparent. But just like car salesman, it seems like brokers are out to take as much as they can get. Get your own clients and cut the brokers out…middlemen will always be middlemen no matter who or what they bring to the table …blaming truckers for these rates is asinine …truth is the industry wanted convenience and we got it and it comes at a cost… I’ll never understand how so many people in this industry want to be their own boss but count on others to find their income…pick up the phone and start calling potential clients

@@khusenfazilov6136 Yes that’s exactly what I do, sometimes walking into companies buildings in person works even better…don’t get me wrong out of 60 companies 3-4 will actually take you up on it…but believe me it does work…I haul cars so I’ve got a specific part of the market to focus on…plus staying local keeps my costs down and gives me predictable fuel prices. I still use brokers from time to time, but I’m not relying on them anymore….truth is the brokers have been ripping everyone off (including the shippers)…you have to build a name and then you can build your own routes. It takes time, patience and hard work but believe me it can be done. Good luck to ya. Just remember sometimes it’s the simple solutions that solve the biggest problems 👍
@@khusenfazilov6136 yes that’s exactly what you do, but don’t expect it to be easy. I’m a broker actually and you essentially need to treat yourself as a broker of your own truck. I would start by trying to email/call the receiving department and ask about lanes they run. Obviously this isn’t easy and this where the dedication comes in. But if you can bother a guy enough to get him to let you run a lane, that’s where you win. You’ll still have to use brokers from time to time for backhauls or something. It’s also a good way to scale a business, if you get close to a shipper you can take out a loan on more trucks and hire drivers for additional lanes they need help on. Bingo, there’s a trucking business. still, easier said than done. But that’s how you do it.
Yes, he’s correct in saying to figure out how much its costing you during your truck per mile. Don’t forget to add all of the following in addition to what he already said ; IFTA, if u have an employee (Employment taxes), workman’s comp, ELD monthly service charge,yearly registration, maintenance (oil changes, tires) insurance and anything else I forgot.

My boss in JB & Sons has us come down to California from Utah empty rather than take a cheap load. He understands the effects of taking cheap loads. Few weeks pass and rates go higher we need patient. Solidarity!
When he said the rates are bad I knew he's lying. Rates are at historic highs, 4-8 weeks backlog. Freight has never been more expensive to ship. $3.50 PM is not even close to the minimum shippers are paying. My company is taking round trip miles at that rate.
Hats off to him for being a broker and trucker. Seems his broker side is arguing with his trucker side 😂 , should’ve just saved my money before wasting it on trucking . This has to be the worse business dealings in America , everything is dictated on the cheap haulers it seems . The headache is truly not worth it . Kudos to the drivers that like to live this way . It's easy to push the blame on truck drivers, rates were relatively ok until suddenly in mid February rates started going down. For some of us, it took a while to make the adjustments. It was a difficult adjustment. It couldn't have been drivers picking a cheap load that suddenly brought freight rates down . Sometimes I could go a week without picking a load cos of the low rates
With transparency we should know the full rate the shipper is paying and negotiate how much percent we are willing to share with the broker. Keep posting!! Wish others with decent following would try for solution rather then fall back on their platforms.
How cheap can you run loads for? transparency might end up both ways. Be careful what you wish for. You might have to tell all the shippers and brokers and your competitors your numbers too.

Just like you have bills they have bills to. What if the broker asked you what your cost per mile is? Would you answer? Is it the brokers business what your numbers are? Should he have to know if you drive a older truck or a new one? maybe it’s non of your business what the price is. Brokers have their own battles to get those loads. Maybe you didn’t earn it. Like the broker didn’t earn to know your numbers. Idk but you might not like what comes with getting a set percentage on brokers or full transparency. It works both ways. Get your own customers and find out what loads pay. It’s literally the only way. You want what they have go get it.

Brokers should not exist bro. In an industry where we can't have any sort of collective bargaining, you can't expect people fresh in this country not to undercut people. I've heard people talk about brokering. It always ends up sounding like a scam.
@YoungJoone, unfortunately most truckers are not professional enough to deal directly with shippers and negotiate rates or solve any issues that arise. Also shippers don’t give advances. You have to load and deliver the freight. Then invoice the shipper with proof of delivery and then wait usually 30 days before you see a dollar.

Is it too hard to create an industry standard, price per mile, factoring in fuel costs, inflation, and difficulty of traffic to create fair pricing all around the board for shippers, brokers, and truckers? Get a board of experienced men and women from each and set industry standards. Get organized!
Know your worth. Take 3 months of milage. Add up all your expenses, fuel, payments, payroll, ect. For those 3 months. Divide that by you mileage and get you cost per mile.
Yea but idk if you noticed but every lane the volumes has went down. Therefore rates went down. There are more trucks then loads right now. People spent the last 2 years running strictly load board freight and not building relationships with brokers are the ones really hurting right now
It really is simple. Know YOUR COST and know what you need to be profitable. If you can't get that rate DON'T TAKE that load. If you can not get YOUR rate then either reduce YOUR COST or get out of this business. You don't know what the grocer pays for the product he sells, you only know his asking price then you decide to take it or leave it. Nobody forces you to take cheap freight. CAPITALISM 101

My question is the same it’s been for 20 years why do brokers still exist in todays world we have the laws in place for minimum insurance and abilities to get more coverage if needed and as long as your a safe decent driver your rates aren’t unaffordable. Yet shippers use brokers who do nothing but sit behind a desk for the most part and give the load away to a driver that maybe good may not be good so the shippers can always save money and time going directly to the truck companies and it’s always better for the trucking companies there has never been seen been one time I’ve seen that broker was better to have as a middle man on the loads my entire career and I’m third generation of Trucking and brokering and I only broker for the side money or loads I can’t handle and take 4 percent bc the driver is doing the work on the load I give out not me and I want a quality driver under the load.

May 2022 issue. The Port of LA and Long Beach are hitting up Trucks on a $10 dollars per TEU import/ Export Container coming and going from Terminal. This is all the zero Emissions by 2035 FEE goes towards the Clean Truck Fund. The article says $90 million can be generated in the first year. The Port has hired Port Check to collect the FEES. The Trucker MUST be Registered in the Port Check BEFORE being able to pick up/ Drop off any Cargo. Trucker my only apply for Exemption if the Truck produces ZERO Emissions or is low- nitrogen Oxide- Emitting. This is all for so called Climate impact. I see it as once again going after trucker ( guy just trying to move containers with used class 8 truck) paying another FEE on top of what say over &7 dollars for Diesel. Just payed that in by passing LA busy area. Northeast in LA county. Going to Phoenix, towing a vehicle to museum in Arizona. Could NOT believe the price of Diesel. The just keep on adding charges to the truckers. He is only moving the CARGO out of clogged Ports, the Truckers are not the problem with climate change.

I've been a professional driver for 20 years. When I first started driving professionally, I had a friend who told me NOT to get into trucking. Here it is 20 years later and I have to thank Ken Harvey for that. Why? Because I've thought about it many times over the years but when you do a search on YT for trucking, good luck finding a single positive story.

I took a run that is offered on a fairly regular basis, and two days later that same load was offered for $1000.00 dollars less. When I asked the broker about this difference, the only thing he could tell me was they covered the loads at that reduced rate. So truck drivers, we are contributing to this downward cycle...
Me and my friend did the same run within a week difference I was getting about 300 less and when I told them they said it was the same run but a different customer I just hung up on him the owner
Shits happening everywhere one month ago i hauled a load for $1650. Last week I was around the same area saw the same load, same broker and it was going for $1200. He said everyone has been moving them for that rate and its mainly big companies hauling them for that rate.

For decades I've been seeing trucks that say "drivers needed!" which just tells me that so many drivers get screwed, the companies can't hold on to enough.

In many cases the big companies hire weekly, not because they can’t retain drivers by treating them fairly, it’s their business model to keep wages low and maximize profit.
I’m a hot shot owner op/ ex fleet owner because I had to park 2 trucks recently. The money doesn’t make since as of late. Then my leased on guys faded out recently as well. Any way, I shoot my shot at every shipper I can. Just recently I was talking to a shipper and he revealed what they paid for that load to be moved.?I was floored and aggressively angry. The broker took 50% of the load!!! I can’t understand how In these hard times people can be so inhumane!! This company is major too!!! The shipper made my company a vendor after that and now they save money on shipping and I make more money. Be vigilant guys. Hang in there!!!!

I’m a O/O so I’m not on the Brokers side. But Brokers do a lot. They do sales, Billing, Advances. At times they negotiate assessorial charges for you.
With that said. I have my own authority and only haul directly for shippers.
As soon as you say "deserve" you've lost the conversation. It's not about "deserve"... it's about how well both parties negotiate.

It's required by our big boy customers. Do you know why we pay so much when "you take all the risk"? Because insurance companies don't pay shit on cargo claims and 80% of carriers aren't cooperative. So either we can shaft our monster customers on damages, or fork out the cash from our own pockets. That is a LARGE part of why serious brokers take more than 10%. RISK MITIGATION. Beyond that, who's to say we're entitled to X%? If my customer is happy paying me $10,000, and I pay the trucker $5,000 and my load is the highest paying load on the board, am I doing something wrong? No, I'm offering the customer great service and convenience, and also paying the trucker more than any other load. Now what?
Hello guys,I am an Owner Operator for the last 6 years and I think that we do not have enough courage to stop this.
The day that we decide to block any truck entrance and exit of the whole truck stops asking that rates goes up,Brokers going to continue playing with us.Personally,I never get cheap loads,I do not move the truck if I can get at least $1,000 clean per day.I don't understand being one of the biggest industry in this country,we have to be begging to the brokers to give us + $100 for a load and,many times we lose it because they sell it for $50 less,it's unacceptable,we move AMERICA and many weeks,we are getting a couple more hundred more than a company drivers.Every time that our trucks needs to go to the shop,we do not spend less than a $1,000,just an oil change we are talking about $700 then,what storytelling are they talking about.
They depend on us,if we don't move,they are nothing and this is for big companies and company drivers as well,it's embarrasing how big companies just want see their trucks moving,putting in those trucks,drivers with 30 days experience and paying them a couple cents per mile.They're destroying this industry.
This is one of the many things that I do when shipper's try to be smart:
Let's guess that by my Rate Confirmation I get a load 15,000 pounds,650 miles and it pays $1,950.
Once I arrive at the shipper I ask for the weight,if,they say that this load weight 20,000 pounds inmediately I say stop,let me see if I gonna get more money for those extra 5,000 pounds,if the broker doesn't give me at least $ 500 or $600 extra,I leave the load and that's it.
Many brokers already know me and they know how I work and beleive me,I won that respect,many times losing money.

Until you can provide the same service that CHR can when they cover 150 shipments per week out of one facility with destinations to everywhere including BFE, I wouldn't call that nuts. Use them to your advantage, they allow you to access lanes that you would never have without them so as long as you're happy with the rate you negotiated then who cares what they got. Sometimes they do lose money just to keep the customer satisfied but I doubt you'd give them a discount. You don't have the same skills they have when getting that freight so yea they're going to be paid for that

The FAIR thing will be let me see EXACTLY what the Shipper is paying so I can THEN truly know how to FAIRLY BID…He said don’t complain if you agree to take a load. Contractors in most industries bid in the blind. If you get an estimate to add a deck to your house the contractors bid blind. The FAIR rate is your cost plus what you believe is an acceptable profit. If you can't get that don't take it.
Agree 100 percent you could be under bidding or over bidding. Freight would move better and everyone is happy without a bad taste in your mouth.

I'm contracted to a carrier & we get to self dispatch. Other owners have gotten screwed by brokers & have given bad reviews on google & our terminal manager threatened all the owners to cancel their lease if they left bad reviews. Said didnt want us to black listed by those brokers. Makes sense but theres just no recourse. Unless you post those reviews anonymously.

Happens all the damn time...young Brokers think "well the Shipper will give me more volume" so they give them money back...like an idiot because half the time the shipper doesn't move but 1 load per month anyways. Also, several large customers are contracted and a flat percentage / open book contract. Next issue is what dudes saying, the lanes are dictated by what a truck will run it for, so if a broker over pays a driver trying to hook it up and then that customer goes out of business or another broker tells them they are over paying the lane so the shipper fires the broker and goes with the cheapest broker. It's insane how all of this works.

It's a fact that brokers are charging more to the customer and still offer the load for these BS prices to owner operators. I've seen it myself. Cutting the price 600 to 1000 bucks after posting for one price and after you call they say the customer don't want to do it for this price no more they want to do it for a lesser price. If you turn it down they still leave it on the board for a higher price to get the next sucker to call in and try to see if they can get them to take it for that lower price. Bait and switch all the time. Living in their big houses sitting on their arse screwing drivers.
If it says 1000 I always ask for 2000 and when they say 600 I tell them 2500. Then there like I’ll get it moved and I say good luck not on my truck sucker

@@stevethomas5209 absolute worst… it was a sherwin Williams paint load that they sold to Landstar for $10k, then Landstar took their cut then it became a $7500 load, then TQL took the load took a huge cut and rebrokered it down to $2900.
The broker should disclose the original contract to the logistic company. Than the broker can take 10%. Also, there should be a minimum cost for reasonable opportunity to make money, all other offers/request should be refused by the broker.
When load is presented to driver it should read:
Shipper pays: $6,000
Broker fee 10%: $600
Pay To driver: $5,400
PERIOD. until this happens, trucking will be problematic.

I started in this industry in 2010 with my spouse as Owner Opps leased to a company & we’ve had many roles trying to find out how to win in this business. We’ve even been brokers working directly with shippers/receivers.
No matter what the role we experienced regulations only come down on truckers. Everyone else in the game is just playing with money & a truckers time.
Brokers & trucking companies have a choice to be fair or not. Truckers have to accept it while we do the hard part & make the sacrifices under some type of regulated compliance.

The purpose of brokers back in the day was to connect shippers with truckers but nowadays shippers can just post their loads directly onto the load boards and we as truckers can bid or get the loads without the need of brokers. And the brokers canal find another job or be truckers themselves.

Who’s gonna pay you? Who’s gonna vet you? Who’s gonna do the check calls and check your insurance and decide you’re a good carrier? Apparently the shipper doesn’t want to do that so they hire brokers. Why don’t you become a broker?

Say no to cheap freight
Sadly seems like this is a lost cause it only takes one trucker to take that low paying load to keep bringing that rate to the bottom. On the other hand it takes much longer to see that load rate come back from gutter and pay decent.
Main thing is when you find a good lane paying good it's just a matter of time for that same load to be dropped down and you are left with finding another one , and this happens all the time .

It is a simple solution, but requires EVERYONE to stick to it, and that will never happen because there is always someone with some reason/excuse for accepting the low ball rate. Fair? The broker should be forced to disclose what the load pays and the percentage taken by the broker. The guy throws out the 10% and no one thinks 10-20% is a lot right? Do the math. Mortgage brokers are limited to what they can be paid per contract and the same should be for freight brokers.

And the price of the shipment doesn’t really matter right because you can’t dictate what that broker can make. If the other trucks around you will haul it for 500$ then that’s the price of the load. If the other trucks said we ain’t hauling for nothing less than 1000$ then it’s 1000$.
you can ask the shipper you can ask the broker the price of the lane.
Broker fees should be capped at 10%. That alone will lead to higher freighter rates. Brokers are digging into truck driver’s pockets under the guise of operating expenses. I could write a book about this bs but I’ll just say good bye.

I feel like some of the stuff this guy said was spot on, but a lot of other stuff was defending his broker side. As a broker/trucker it’s obvious you still want to protect the easier form of income.
Notice in the beginning he also said 10%. However, later Alex caught onto him on how he’ll have an extra $300 to play with. On a $3000 load, that’s a total of 20% he’s actually looking to make.
I appreciate the fact he came on here to try and be transparent. But just like car salesman, it seems like brokers are out to take as much as they can get.

Get your own clients and cut the brokers out…middlemen will always be middlemen no matter who or what they bring to the table …blaming truckers for these rates is asinine …truth is the industry wanted convenience and we got it and it comes at a cost… I’ll never understand how so many people in this industry want to be their own boss but count on others to find their income…pick up the phone and start calling potential clients

@@khusenfazilov6136 Yes that’s exactly what I do, sometimes walking into companies buildings in person works even better…don’t get me wrong out of 60 companies 3-4 will actually take you up on it…but believe me it does work…I haul cars so I’ve got a specific part of the market to focus on…plus staying local keeps my costs down and gives me predictable fuel prices. I still use brokers from time to time, but I’m not relying on them anymore….truth is the brokers have been ripping everyone off (including the shippers)…you have to build a name and then you can build your own routes. It takes time, patience and hard work but believe me it can be done. Good luck to ya. Just remember sometimes it’s the simple solutions that solve the biggest problems 👍

@@khusenfazilov6136 yes that’s exactly what you do, but don’t expect it to be easy. I’m a broker actually and you essentially need to treat yourself as a broker of your own truck. I would start by trying to email/call the receiving department and ask about lanes they run. Obviously this isn’t easy and this where the dedication comes in. But if you can bother a guy enough to get him to let you run a lane, that’s where you win. You’ll still have to use brokers from time to time for backhauls or something. It’s also a good way to scale a business, if you get close to a shipper you can take out a loan on more trucks and hire drivers for additional lanes they need help on. Bingo, there’s a trucking business. still, easier said than done. But that’s how you do it.

Don’t forget to add all of the following in addition to what he already said ; IFTA, if u have an employee (Employment taxes), workman’s comp, ELD monthly service charge,yearly registration, maintenance (oil changes, tires) insurance and anything else I forgot.

One shipper quoted $3,300 for 545 miles 15 day DAT average was $1510. That's nearly 50%.
My boss in JB & Sons has us come down to California from Utah empty rather than take a cheap load. He understands the effects of taking cheap loads. Few weeks pass and rates go higher we need patient. Solidarity!
When he said the rates are bad I knew he's lying. Rates are at historic highs, 4-8 weeks backlog. Freight has never been more expensive to ship. $3.50 PM is not even close to the minimum shippers are paying. My company is taking round trip miles at that rate.

It's easy to push the blame on truck drivers, rates were relatively ok until suddenly in mid February rates started going down. For some of us, it took a while to make the adjustments. It was a difficult adjustment. It couldn't have been drivers picking a cheap load that suddenly brought freight rates down . Sometimes I could go a week without picking a load cos of the low rates
Low rates are here to stay for a good while.

Brokers should not exist bro. In an industry where we can't have any sort of collective bargaining, you can't expect people fresh in this country not to undercut people. I've heard people talk about brokering. It always ends up sounding like a scam.
Then make them not exist go get your own customers no ones stopping you from putting in the work finding them
@YoungJoone, unfortunately most truckers are not professional enough to deal directly with shippers and negotiate rates or solve any issues that arise.
Also shippers don’t give advances. You have to load and deliver the freight. Then invoice the shipper with proof of delivery and then wait usually 30 days before you see a dollar.

Know your worth. Take 3 months of milage. Add up all your expenses, fuel, payments, payroll, ect. For those 3 months. Divide that by you mileage and get you cost per mile.

Yea but idk if you noticed but every lane the volumes has went down. Therefore rates went down. There are more trucks then loads right now. People spent the last 2 years running strictly load board freight and not building relationships with brokers are the ones really hurting right now

It really is simple. Know YOUR COST and know what you need to be profitable. If you can't get that rate DON'T TAKE that load. If you can not get YOUR rate then either reduce YOUR COST or get out of this business. You don't know what the grocer pays for the product he sells, you only know his asking price then you decide to take it or leave it. Nobody forces you to take cheap freight.

You made the profit you were looking for. How much the broker made or lost on the load shouldn't concern you. You don't know what the dealership paid for the car . You do know what they are asking for it and you know how much you're willing to pay.

My question is the same it’s been for 20 years why do brokers still exist in todays world we have the laws in place for minimum insurance and abilities to get more coverage if needed and as long as your a safe decent driver your rates aren’t unaffordable. Yet shippers use brokers who do nothing but sit behind a desk for the most part and give the load away to a driver that maybe good may not be good so the shippers can always save money and time going directly to the truck companies and it’s always better for the trucking companies there has never been seen been one time I’ve seen that broker was better to have as a middle man on the loads my entire career and I’m third generation of
