One thing I loved about Lucha Underground was it stayed in one spot. Or stayed put for a season or two and didn't move around. I think that's probably better for the wrestlers, less stress going across country, but also because the temple itself felt like a character. With the focus on stories and the specific stunts they did by using the area I could buy the place was essentially a sacrificial site and out for blood.

Man, I remember watching Season 1 and 2 back in the day when Lucha was going up against golden era NXT. You could just feel the passion and love for the craft with every match and it has some great storytelling with the more cinematic vignettes. Part of me always hopes Robert Rodriguez or whoever had creative control for LU reaches out to the promotions mentioned here (except WWE, since Vince doesn’t like to play nice with others😂) and bring it back with a cross promotional event.
On another note, it’s pretty depressing that when it came to covering the LU alumni in WWE all I could do was just shake my head and think “they’re holding all these guys back”. Doesn’t help a majority of them are gone from the company now😔
Regardless, Lucha Underground will always live on in our memories and with each of the amazing workers🔥

What I loved about LU was how they modernized wrestling with the stories, both lifelike and scifi both. They knew that everyone knows wrestling is scripted and predetermined, so they added the cool and outlandish stories to spice things up. That is something a lot of current companies aren't doing. Others are still trying to act like wrestling is real which takes away from the entertainment aspect when we know it's all fake.

Lucha Underground was the one show I could get invested in. I dropped off of WWE due to the PG era, and coming back, it still feels too clean, soulless. AAA felt like Central American WWE and NJPW is too outrageous for me. Lucha Underground was full of heart, and knowing that Robert Rodriguez was the producer, it made sense that it was vibrant, full of life and outrageously serious. Knowing more of the behind the scenes stuff though, it's sad that it had to fizzle out instead of dying when it was at its peak. It seems Dreamer's days in the doghouse are over already. I imagine Flair's alleged indiscretions are nearly forgotten now too. Wrestling fans have the longest memories for kayfabe but seem willing to look the other way about a lot things that happen in the real world. Steve Austin's reputation for instance has never suffered at all from the actions of the real life Steve Williams.

About Season 5 of Lucha Underground well I wouldn't count on that but what Dave Meltzer was talking about is this MLW side project Azteca Underground what I heard is done by Konan who is big on Lucha Libre. What MLW has been doing lately is adding their own twist to what Dario(Cesar Duran) has been up to since Lucha Underground ended. Azteca Underground might not be much of what alot of OG LU fans want as some kind of return. Good video.

Awesome video , my favourite promotion of all time and IMO the best wrestling show of all time..the writing , the visuals just sets it apart from everything else. but when you talk about the part and what happened and go into why it ended...there is a few key very important things missing , most notably the hiatuses in between seasons which is what played a HUGE part in why the talents were upset with the contracts because they were waiting around for like a year and incase of season 4 it was a 2yr wait before the show came back and with no LU it made no sense for them to stay locked to the show and this was brought on by the one that caused all of those issues but is rarely mentioned and this is Univision , the parent company of El Rey Network at the time and the one who gave them the money which was then used to budget their shows , Univision is really what caused the fall of Lucha Underground because they cut the budget in season 4 which forced LU to do what would take 3-4 months down to having to shoot an entire show in a single month.

I loved LU. About twelve years ago I was sitting around one day wondering what ECW would look like of it came around today and decided it would have presented wrestling as an underground sort of fight club so when I saw LU for the first time, I was hooked. I remember during the build to Ultima Lucha 1, every match seemed like a big deal and I wanted to see every single match. I wouldn’t want it to come back though unless absolutely everyone was back and they picked up where they left off. I want to know what happened after the Barrett’s character arrived and Dario was resurrected.

Sorry for the late reply only just found this documentary:
I feel like Jeff Cobb could have had a huge vault in popularity if he’d kept the Matanza gimmick in transition from LU.
Ricochet almost immediately parlayed the puma role into his Osprey feud which got him noticed by the non lucha wrestling fans.
But ultimately now you’re 100% correct but immediately following its end it was Johnny Mundo and Brian Cage that got all the big spots in international bookings.

I liked how Lucha Underground had that weird background story going throughout the show. It really felt like it added to the show, and it made the show way different compared to the standard wrestling production. I also have to agree with you on Prince Puma, he was the main reason I got into watching Lucha Underground, he was an awesome wrestler, and kinda felt like the Heart of the show. Also I had no clue the Thunder Rosa was Kobra Moon, that threw me off, and from watching the clips you showed of her character really made sense.

The mid 2010s were a great time to be a wrestling fan. WWE was pushing a new generation, NXT was the hottest promotion in America, TNA was giving the stars of the 2020s their last polish before they jumped to WWE, ROH was at its height with a ton of the future AEW roster, NJPW was breaking into the larger western wrestling fan's larger consumption habits thanks to the massive cultural moment that Bullet Club was, Lucha Underground was giving a whole new take on wrestling that is the most innovative wrestling show in history, ICW, RevPro, and PROGRESS were flying the flag internationally for the British scene, and EVOLVE and PWG were at their heights as well.

So many of the other characters seemed poised to break out. This was must see TV. Like all good things - it wasn't meant to last. Too many people have been brainwashed by Vince to like utter trash like Roman Reigns. Unless the WWE is sold & broken up I don't know if we will ever get good, long lasting wrestling again. We have to really try as fans to teach our children & friends what GOOD wrestling is, & not to tolerate being around those who support WWE. This is war.

After WWE and WCW fell apart at the seams with so many greats leaving, the fights looking less exciting and the fake McMahon Family Drama at that time (specifically where Shane "took control" of WCW and Stephanie took over ECW;) my love for wrestling died for several years.
Then, I came upon a review made by ERod: The Blockbuster Buster talking about something called Lucha Underground; a new wrestling series set around Mexican Masked Wrestling...and I was intrigued. After watching the review, I went to check out the show for myself online (because i didn't know if we had El Rey Network on our channel list) and...I LOVED IT!
Everything about LU was so much better than what WE had!
Better wrestlers, better stories, better conflicts, better athletic skills and Dario's role was far more charismatic than what Vince gave us. Then, After the events of Ultima Lucha 4...both the show AND the El Rey Network just died out without explanation
