Haha yes it's a very cute little trailer, I pretty much set it up for picking up my donor TDI swap cars. Never intended for it to do this but it keeps the load as light as possible 😂
One day I'd like to do a swap on a first gen Colorado or Canyon or maybe a first gen Tundra. Whatever it is would be a manual trans 4wd. You ever heard of anyone doing either? I had an 05 manual TDI Beetle and loved it. I'd love to combine the TDI with the smallest, lightest 4wd truck I could fit in comfortably but I'm 6'4", 350 lbs so my options are limited lol. Thanks for the content you put out Sir!
I know there's at least a Colorado been done, and tundra in the works, either would be a great option but you may have to ditch a lot of the electronics and do mechanical tcase and aftermarket dash, along with the manual trans though you would have a sweet setup.
@jessesneed2364 for sure man! There are some fancy digital signal converters to get the newer stuff working but overall mostly what I've seen is a lot of money spent and a lot of frustration trying to get it all working, the mechanical gauges or a simple OBD reader sure keep it basic and stress-free
@@TDISwaps I'll keep that in mind. I'd probably try to keep it as simple as possible and go with a work truck base model platform. Cruise control would be nice but about the only thing I'd not want to do without would be air-conditioning.
@jessesneed2364 and cruise control / air conditioning are a piece of cake with your TDI, no input from the swap vehicles electronics needed. Usually it's like electronic four-wheel drive and all the dash functions that get tricky
Yeah this trailer is supposed to be strictly for picking up donor cars, I don't want a full size car hauler just for the weight so my Toyota pulls them easier. Definitely don't plan on doing this ever again unless it's an emergency LOL
@@TDISwaps It looks like Saskatchewan, with open prairies big enough to watch your dog run away for a week. I really enjoyed your video, been contemplating doing a tdi swap to the old toyota I have.
@A2J_Tim haha yeah Wyoming is pretty wide open too I live just into the mountains but there's a lot of prairie everywhere else. You definitely wouldn't be disappointed with a TDI it works amazing
@@TDISwaps im impressed with the towing you did, that is very impressive. I currently use an old 12 valve Cummins for towing broken cars on a 20 foot deck, I kinda wonder if you could do it with a TDI toyota but at the same time I am wondering what the fuel economy would be like. Also have you ever thought about doing a water meth injection system to control your EGT's?
@A2J_Tim looked into it but as long as I'm under 1000 most of the time I don't know that it's worth messing with any lower. Yeah if you're already towing with a 12 valve you probably won't see much mpg gain especially that big of a trailer, and will be hard to control with a smaller truck. I'm planning to cummins swap my 6.4 powerstroke but until then the Toyota gets about double the 6.4 towing donor cars, this video was very excessive and not a normal practice LOL
Usually the tcase grinds like mad trying to do that Indicating it's not good, but this Toyota tcase seems to just mesh everything together, shifts as easy as the transmission 🤷
I was taking it pretty easy for this pull, watch the other videos I have in my towing playlist for more extreme stuff, but this big turbo on the Toyota doesn't see much over 1200-1400° towing with the RPMs between 3000-4000 usually.
@@TDISwaps Had a 92 4runner automatic with Shift on the fly 4wd and 2hi-4hi was fun did 4low-4high on accident and it sounded awful. Thumbs up on all your builds very impressive and very inspirational.
Yeah unfortunately I'm out in the sticks about an hour from a tow dolly service, If I was worried about the trailer I would have just used my gooseneck and powerstroke, but that wouldn't make a good RUclips video haha. I went very slow other than when I was videoing
The Dakota’s only 5000 pounds not 11k like the description makes you think (which is why I’m here I said no way that Dakota weighs 11k lol) not really over loading a dual axles trailer that much if any depending on axles
@Hicks8907 that's 11k TOTAL weight, Dakota, Toyota and trailer combined, Dakota is 5600 with 1 ton axles, Toyota is 4200, and trailer is 1200 haha, way over the weight rating of the Toyota and especially the 2k 4 bolt trailer axles 😂😂😂
Yes it helps a ton! Wish I would have just replaced the driveshaft right off the bat but it's one of those things you try not mess with until it breaks, but it's broke now 🤣 oh well
Is there a "best or easiest" TDI motor to use for swaps? Sorry if a over asked question. I've just recently stumbled upon your channel and had me thinking seriously about how much better this would fit my needs than the gutless 22r in it now.
Thats a cute camper trailer....

@@TDISwaps it will work for now. But it's on borrowed time for sure....
@bigloads3600 of it's never doing this again, it works perfectly for 3000 lb cars though

Realize u probably have more hp n tq then 1980s trucks. Which were expected too tow that
Oh I know, this thing totally has more power than even a lot of 90s v8s 😂
well, I"ve done this with the original 22re. I think it's safe to say you have the advantage!👍👍
Especially at 5,000 FT elevation I can't imagine trying to do anything like this with a 22re, it can barely hold 55 on its own 😂
You need a heavier rated trailer friend.
Still an amazing job of the TDI!

Are you using Toyota transfer case? If so are they chain or gear driven? Didnt know you could do a 4low-4 high- 2hi shift.
I don't remember which transfer case it is, the one stock behind the r150f. I do believe it is chain drive but I couldn't say for sure

@brudevold62 ya it might have something to do with it having like 310K miles on it lol. Thanks for watching!
Love you stuff buddy, any chance we could a start to finish build series if you ever end up getting into another one?
Ya I really tried to do that with the Toyota, Chevy and Dakota, there are playlists for each of them if you can find those on the channel.
Instead of overloading the trailer probably could've rented a tow dolly. Nice tdi video. Thank you

What’s the mpg on the tdi Toyota

Yes sir, all original 285K miles on it, only internal change is head studs

The 99-04 ALH or 97-98 AHU definitely make the easiest swaps in the older Toyotas, they are also the cheapest for parts and services.
why do they both have the same wheels?
Toyota came with them, got the ones on the Dakota for free 🤷
BUT THE 1.9 TDI CANT MOVE A LARGE VEHICLE!!!!! THIS IS ALL FAKE NEWS!!!!
