Here is the statement provided by SmileDirectClub in response to our investigation: www.cbc.ca/marketplace/blog/correspondence-with-smiledirectclub ^akd
I've had pretty bad experiences with dentists. Losing control of their dremmel and saying "oops" Claiming that my cramps from a mis aligned bite after an overfill are imaginary. Most recently I went in for a filling, while He was doing his thing He chuckled at a punch line on the TV (which he had turned up when he first entered) even the assistant noticed. When i got out of the chair he said to me "I also took away most of the tooth to stop you from grinding" Which we did not discuss at all. I was very stressed for personal reasons which lead to my grinding.
BIASED JOURNALISM!!!!! Only 2000 cases against them?! How about close to million happy customers? That's just 0.2% people. Is it really that bad? I am sure the percentage of people not happy with their dental procedures and exorbitant fees is much much higher. Even regular people who go to dentist for their procedures, usually have many complications later on, for which dentists don't take any responsibility either. Not to forget that they charge a arm and a leg for each visit and procedure. Don't fall for biased journalism or sponsored reports. Think for yourself based on the facts and then make a decision. Peace!!
Thank you for looking into Smile Direct. This is all a scam. I just filed a complaint to the Better Business Bureau, I'm not sure how this company can get away with this type of service and taking money from people for a product that is poorly made. Shame on them. To anyone looking into this product - far, far away. I had braces before so I know what invisible retainers should be offering in terms of quality for the price. I paid for SmileDirect in full and I am utterly disappointed and in the process of getting money back from the company. The retainers themselves are made very cheaply. Almost every single set I've had has broken. Not only that, but the company has no transparency in the way they run their operations. They are very disorganized and went weeks or even months without replying to my requests or emails. They have also left me without sets of retainers for months in between - so therefore my teeth moved. I finally realized I needed to let them know at least 6 weeks ahead of time before the set of retainers would end, that I needed a new pair in order for them to arrive in any acceptable timeframe, which they won't even allow so you have to lie to them. This product is a scam, if you want to save money get metal braces. I've also had those, which straightened out my teeth very quickly, however these didnt move my teeth AT ALL then I had to be re asset and wait 3 months for the second shipment and when received them the material is cheap and poorly made. the alingers would cut into my gums and cut them. by then my teeth had moved. When you call to complain all they keep asking you are for pictures, eventhough I have tons and did a reassment. I also highly SAY STAY AWAY I DO NOT recommend this product any day. They make difficult to get your refund and speak to a manager. You would think you get your invoice right after they withdraw the money but I have to email 3 or more to get them The media was right this is all a scam and that is the bureau receives these complaints. Disappointed Customer
Smile Direct Club is a dishonest company. They commit you to a financial contract when you are filling out the info, but for people who don't know that they get roped. I had my daughter's stepmother take her for a scan. To even get the scan you have to consent. Also insurance doesn't cover their services bc they aren't true healthcare. You need an Rx for aligners. Anyways, I got a call the day of the appt asking for $250 after being told they didn't need payment. I gave them my credit card number and they charged the $250, but I started getting money debited out. I had told the representative I would call him back to let him know whether I wanted to do the payment plan or pay on full after I got the insurance situated. To this day I haven't had a resolution. They tricked the stepmom into signing these papers at the visit and then copy and pasted my credit card number on to the contract. Then when I called to see what was going on they wouldn't give me access to the account saying it wasn't in my name eventhough they had put my card number on everything. It took contacting SDC's attorneys directly. Although I was redirected back to the team lead, but she never did any of the things she had said she would. I don't recommend them based on that deceptive behavior at the beginning. Customer service is terrible. Go look on BBB at the complaints. They are unethical.
Couldn't imagine, _trusting_ an 'influencer', for their advice on a freaking _medial procedure!_ NO! Please NO! Our world is _full_ of uninformed people, getting robbed. Than physically hurt from their purchase. *Grrrrr Isn't that assault? Or a mugging?? 😡🤬
One of the biggest red flags is the fact that they don’t take x-rays. I had braces twice and they did full cranial x-rays both times. It’s essential to knowing how your teeth will move.
Although root resorption isn't as common without past orthodontic work, it can still occur and getting aligners with undiagnosed root resorption will make ur teeth fall out among other possibilities
Exactly it's so hard to take them seriously. It's not just about moving teeth around. It really broke my heart to hear these people in dentistry dismiss so many important questions. A big part of dentistry also includes educating your patients. It's not just money.
Funnily enough, before this video I saw an ad for a company called Quick Smiles where they point out in the ad that they do x-rays and other companies don't. I wonder what their reviews are like. 🤔
There are so many things wrong with SDC's process, but to clarify the latest dental research advises against taking X-rays for mild to moderate cases as the benefits outweigh the risks. The problem with SDC is mainly because they treat people that should not have been treated in the first place. The dude who's teeth broke for example had underlying dental issues for sure; aligners can't do that themselves.
Team Builder In my experience only one thing you said that’s incorrect is that they don’t tighten every time. Only occasionally. I had a great experience with braces as well.
J. Montrice 19 an hour starting, higher than any dental assistant job opportunity. very accurate to what you said, but believe me when I say that everyone at the bottom of the company is aware of the corruption and hates the higher ups for treatment of customers.
I've heard that they're paid commission, only when someone actually bought it, not for the initial appointment/scan , with no base hourly wage. . So from the beginning they are being promoted to be savage and to rush people through because they don't even know if they are getting paid. Don't quote me on it, this is just hearsay.
Wtheck is wrong with that lady just brushing off his questions like that? Idc how cheap a place is, you WILL NOT treat me any way just to make a sale. All questions should be answered as its important to your health. Be careful who you invest in your health and money with!!!!!
Mandy Candy They literally coached us on how to “over come objections”. They would ask us to video tape the appointment and go back and watch how we could have gotten the sale and overcome the objections 😂😂😂 They could care less. You aren’t even allowed to call them patients, you call them customers 🙄
I actually went to one of these with a friend who was thinking about joining, I was with her and as someone who has some understanding of science I got suspicious of the things their products were claiming and I did some online research Into the field and convinced my friend it was bs, also it was a red flag with them being extremely nice to us too, real proud of that day probably saved her a good amount of money and trouble
don't forget that doing this a years long work and for adult the risk just too high since unlike child your teeth just not replacable... you can not sue them when you teeth fall out....
My enamel is wearing out, my bite has disappeared, I’ve experienced hypersensitivity and one tooth has moved out after the alleged straightening. Do yourself a favor, go to an Othordontist.
I’ve had braces before and they made my teeth perfect. I then lost my retainers and my teeth shifted a little after that. I then got smile direct last month do you think I made a good choice?
The problem is people are unaware that the initial smile direct appointment is basically a sales meeting. They are selling a product and securing a sale.
yeah - that's why it's free. I made an appointment for tomorrow and now I want to cancel after seeing these videos, but even though it's a "free" appointment it costs $25 to cancel
Nicole Crawford Yeah I’m a licensed dental assistant and I legally cannot advise anyone like these sales people working for smile direct club. I only help explain a procedure and cannot diagnose anything with my only major potential medical decision being to not put a numbing Novocain injection vile with a chemical in it that puts anyone with heart issues at huge risks on the tray. That’s it. No dental assistant should be doing this and the biggest component of my job is to be an advocate for my patients to help them make informed decisions around their health but this company and it’s sales assistants are abusing this relationship for personal monetary gain. We also shouldn’t be in any office seeing patients without scrubs. Any mouths getting open? Scrubs, gloves, masks, glasses/face shields otherwise I could get sick, get my patient sick, spread diseases to other patients, spread diseases to my family, etc. if I were to dress myself like the smile direct club employees.
First they were not dentists. Second, I wouldn’t judge by what they are wearing. I have been in the dental field for almost 10 years. Most doctors I have worked for wear business attire unless on surgery days. However, with covid that will all be changing and all will be mandated to wear scrubs that are kept at work.
Lissy London as a dental practitioner they should of spotted it a declined the treatment. And if it’s so obvious they should of declined the moment they saw his teeth
@@dasjahjones2441 I called and they had someone email me who asked for pictures of my teeth. I also got braces so I sent them a copy of my Orthodontist bill. Took about a month and got a full refund sent to me by check. It was over $1200 is what I got back.
C S yeah I’m going to see my orthodontist after all of this COVID-19 stuff died down. SDC really messed up my bite and they also asked me for pictures but I haven’t been able to see my orthodontist yet. When you sent them the bill for the braces what did you say specifically? I’m trying to get the same turnout as you and get my refund hahaha
Wow I was supposed to get them. I even went to an appointment. I decided to get normal braces instead because I’m a teenager I got a discount from an orthodontist.
________ doesn’t mean they are the ones who create treatment plans. Who tf cares if they can put them on and take them off LOL? That’s like saying because a construction worker puts up wood and nails it together he should be able to draft buildings and approve their structural design rather than an architect and engineers.
@@kevintheriault5005 Where did I or the person I replied to mention anything about hygienists creating treatment plans? You're creating an arguement out of nothing. I replied to a comment that mentioned hygienists giving ortho advice. Hygienists can give ortho advice. Advice is also a very broad term which can be interpreted differently. By the way, comparing a hygienists to construction workers and dentists to engineers isn't even a close comparison.
________ yeah you’re right but in most dental offices they are under supervision. In this case it appears that they’re acting as consultants which they’re unqualified for.
I actually went to smile direct club last year and the woman there said that my case was not a good fit. She said that she wouldn't normally say that, but she couldn't in good faith even start the process with me because I wouldn't be a good fit.
Solafa Oushar I’m fairly sure we have different currencies. Invisalign and braces cost the same where I live, most people pay upwards of $10,000 (aud, not usd).
Adore You most braces aren’t 10,000 USD. You’re in lingual brace territory there. Most braces are between 4,000 and 8,000 USD, which is still expensive. I think the point is to spend $2,000+ on a treatment plan this isn’t going to solve your problems or may even cause harm and the need for subsequent dental work, is worse than waiting and spending the money when you can. Most orthodontists have interest free payment plans as well.
My sister and one of my friends use to wear them and their teeth are straightened and uniformed. It may suck to wear them now but in the long run you don’t have to look back and go back to the dentist for severe treatment.
Wear your retainers when you get them off!! I know its annoying but my friend never wore hers and her teeth went back to how they were. I wore mine the first few years but kept losing them, and they're expensive to replace. I stopped and when I turned 24, 10yrs after having braces off, my teeth shifted. I'm still mad at myself for not wearing them. You get to a point where you think "meh, it wont matter" but you need to wear your retainer at least a few times a week at night to keep them straight. :)
@@cadavher I've had retainers after phase 1 until early phase 2 from October 2017 till October 31st, 2019, when I got my bottom braces. I already had my 2nd upper expander because apparently I relapsed with expansion, plus my lower jaw has more teeth that have emerged than the upper.
Man, I feel you. They gave me a 6 month plan that turned to over a year plan until my front teeth started getting loose. 2k later, I ended up getting braces after all.
How much was your Invisalign? I had braces before and I just want Invisalign to straighten my top teeth a little bit more again. It’s fine but it could definitely be better lol. ~I stopped wearing my retainers a couple years ago when I got to college.
Wow thanks for the heads up. i used to work at wework and the company rented a space out of it and there were so many customers. how did it damage your teeth? Also whats invasalign full and lite ?
Woah I'm blown away. I just sent in my impressions last week and was gonna pay in full after seeing how it'll look after the treatment. You saved me, thank you.
My orthodontist did the invisalign scan with me even though they were pretty confident my issues were too severe and it was literally just an assistant that did the scan lol.
I got braces/invisalign put on my teeth last year, before they even began the process - they sent me to the dentist to do all kinds of stuff, and only began treatments once my teeth were in perfect condition. Otherwise they wouldn't even attempt it. So this, where treatment is almost instantaneous for everyone is shady practice.
ImJustDead Same here. Before my Invisalign treatment started, they advised I fix my gum disease first and when that was under control, I could start with the aligners. I received deep cleaning every couple of months especially around my wisdom teeth as they were still erupting and I wasn’t able to get them cleaned properly. It’s been a few months now since I completed my treatment and I couldn’t be happier with my smile. I did pay a lot more but that was to treat a genuine case of gum disease that I could tell I definitely had. I actually initially went in to get veneers coz I felt my teeth were too small... but after my gums were treated my beautiful teeth came out as my gums became less swollen and then as the gaps closed it was even better. I will now always have healthy strong and straight teeth thanks to the staff at Cosmetic Laser and Dentistry in Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺
@@joshuanduwayo7765 Not at the same time, I started with braces and had the option to switch to invisalign about 1/4 of the way through at no extra cost as my teeth had had moved considerably with braces. My invisalign treatment is ongoing. I had an open bite, my four upper front teeth were pushed forward. Braces did 80% of the job in 7 months - now invisalign is doing the rest.
A lot of licensed orthodontists do Invisalign I currently have them and it’s a two year process for me. Mine were €4000. They go through a longer more investigated process of looking at your teeth and send a scan to my orthodontist every week to show them how it’s going.
Oh absolutely. Go to orthodontist. They will take xrays, determine if your teeth and gums are healthy first. So many ppl are not right candidates for Invisalign so it’s a good to go to orthodontist so they could offer alternatives too.
I would definitely go to a consultation at a reputable orthodontists office. Most consultations are free and give a ton of information about your teeth. I wasn't approved for Invisalign because my underbite was so severe. Hope you have better luck...
Don't people realize that if these smile aligners worked on everyone that orthodontists would be out of business? If it is too good to be true, it often is.
It's impossible because this is only a tool. The professional gives the diagnosis, treatment plan and options, and in many cases we need more tools than aligners to obtain the needed results.
I think they're ok if you're teeth are fairly straight already and you just want them perfect. Otherwise these aren't replacements for braces if you have crowding, overbite, and very crooked teeth.
Just a heads up, I had Invisalign for several years and now my teeth are straight and my smile has been widened and looks great. However, I originally also wanted to get just the top teeth done because my bottom teeth were straight. Over a year into the treatment I began to realize that my teeth were not aligning well and it was difficult to chew. I ended up paying the additional cost to do the bottom teeth as well. My teeth now align with eachother well and I can chew and comfortably keep my mouth in a closed, resting position. I highly recommend that you get more information before signing an orthodontic contract for a treatment that includes only the top teeth. I didn't think of the alignment issue until it came up, and it was a large enough issue that I ended up spending the extra $2200 for the bottom teeth.
@@Lianawuzhere I'm currently on in invisalign right now and the way I got my invisalign was through my dentistry, they have an orthodontist that comes every tuesday and they checked my teeth and recommended me for invisalign.
my dentist also told me that i only need the top for 6 months, but do you have insurance covering the costs as well? i have insurance im just not sure how much it'll cover
as a dentist, yea braces are expensive because it takes like a decade of school to learn how to do it safely. Having an untrained technician look quickly without information is so dangerous for a lot of people
notice how fast they came up with a plan for their “new smile” yet invisalign which is safer and better takes almost a month to come up with a plan and aligners for you. that’s how yk sdc is not safe.
What's crazy is that if you actually look at the top left of one of the screens in this video it says Invisalign plan so they are using the same technology and probably same planner that they send into for the trays but just doing a shittier job of it
Yeah Invisalign is a million times better what worries me is the fact that there is no actual orthodontist doctor doing the exam before you get your aligners the scan is the same though which shouldn’t be a problem as long as there is proper oversight the md orthodontist
Suddenly finding all these videos after my first week on clear correct, I went through my dentist and orthodontist so I’m not as worried, but Yeesh listening to what they were going to end up doing to those peoples teeth is a little freaky. Especially the one where they could have fallen out 😱
Same here. My orthodontist for Invisalign said he wouldn't be able to straighten all my teeth. But I could see my dentist about getting veeners to fix gaps in my two front teeth after Invisalign treatment. Every 6 weeks I see my orthodontist face to face. Only 3 times he has had to adjust my treatment plan (at no extra costs) because he noticed I had 4 teeth that couldn't move around slightly. He had to polish between my teeth for them to move.
Yeah, I suddenly am actually okay with my braces, as much as a hate getting them tightened I know it's gonna be worth it. I should be getting them off sometime early next year.
You are all lucky you can get braces, I advance gum disease I could never get braces. I am just trying to keep my teeth for a bit longer but I wished I had took better care of my teeth, so my advice to you is brush and floss at home everyday keep away from flavored milks, coca cola, sugar cause decay its cheap and very addictive only have them as a treat, visit your dentist regularly and get your teeth cleaned regularly too from your dentist.
Thats so true. As a single mother of two children ive spent literally tens of thousands on their health. From dentists to opthamologists to surgeons and hospital beds. Even here in Australia where the medicare system pays for part of your bill, the health profession charges like a wounded bull. They use your love of your children to take advantage of you.
After watching this video you still believe that the orthodontist that went to school for over 10 years is the one that's money hungry? These people will say and do anything to get business.
I wanted braces and I definitely had no real issues or pain. I went to the dentist 7 small cavities, 400 bucks later... next, I paid 1000 down with a monthly plan of 135....1.5 years later, I’m almost done. I hate the braces look but my teeth look bomb, not “Straighter looking”, and I can call my orthodontist now and she’ll answer all my questions and I like seeing her. I just like the person to person contact in medical. Orthodontist could never be threatened by smile direct.
@@stevefrank3599 they aren't though. people are having major issues with smiledirect and although it's more expensive, it's the safe way to go. it takes a very long time to put forward a braces or invisalign plan (about a month) so things can be moved safely, healthily, and comfortably (as much as braces or invisalign can be!). beaces are tried and true because they're safe and people are face to face. smiledirect doesn't have that and it'll only hurt people over time.
@@jessicay.7924 I'm not saying its perfect or risk free, but people do it because dentists over charge. How do i Know? Because my local dentist wanted $9k last year for clear aligners, then I declined the offer saying smile direct now offer $2k for a almost identical service, and guess what the dentist dropped their price to $5k! thats $4k off thru haggling!
@@robert7622 He mentions that his father is from the UK. You don't get charged for most types of orthodontic treatment if your under 18 such as braces. Edit: to add on, you aren't charged nearly as much as some other countries for normal treatment since dentistry is subsidized to some extent by the NHS.
I have finished my aligners for a yr now and my teeth are fine. My dentist even checked and said my teeth are perfectly fine and healthy. Everyone does not get the same experience. I am happy with results because it did major changes that helped me to feel more confident than ever
These alligners have no consideration for jaw function and airways - they just straighten teeth at all costs. Seek a face and airway focussed dentist who won't damage your health. Absolutely breathtaking these firms exist.
@@k7450 No. Orthodontists don't consider the airways or jaws when they are straightening teeth. They straighten teeth at all costs with total disregard for function. Function of the jaws in relation to the teeth, function of the airways in relation to tongue space.... The consideration of assymetries of the whole body in relation to occlusion. So, no. Not any orthodontist.
@@theboyjames3065 that is simply not true. they have to make sure of all that before starting treatment - if they have an issue with your jawline or disease, they would not move the teeth.
@@SoulcatcherLucario It's a guessing game, and has the huge risk of compromising both function and your health. Is a CBCT scan performed and your airways assessed in relation to your jaw position? Do you have a full body assessment, of your hips and feet in relation to how your jaw functions? Do they know where your teeth should be in relation to your jaw joint? The answer is NO. Do not sprout replies saying something is simply untrue when you are wrong. Either you have had the treatment and want to justify it, are seriously (!?) considering the treatment, or you have a vested interest in protecting its practice. 🙅
I am a dentist.. people please please you have to understand something sometimes your problem isn’t your teeth sometimes the BONE of the jaws is the problem sometimes you don’t have Space.. YOU need to get the right diagnosis before anything.. go to orthodontist ask for diagnosis they will take Xray called cephalo metric analysis to determine the way of treatment you need.
Starcrush Girl yes Orthognatic surgery for class III malocclusion is a solution but it can be dentally corrected to camouflage it with extractions . Of course what ever things they are promoting here will be useless and harmful.
Starcrush Girl yeah I remember it very well cause my prof asked me back in school to search for case reporters for the use of invisalign aligner as a tx option for class III malocclusion and present it to couple of orthodontists:) .. let just say it was a long long discussion hahah .
I’ve used the whitening strips and holy cow do they work. I’m also interested in the effects they would have on your teeth but overall i was extremely happy with the results of them
I was very close to starting SDC, i went for the initial appointment and have just been on the fence about purchasing, glad you made this video because there is no way I am going to risk it now
I'm using Invisalign now. It's been cool & I'm just about done(2 weeks left). Thing is it has to be done through an approved dentist or orthodontist & it's more expensive, but totally worth the peace of mind. Personally, with my dental insurance covering $2,000, the price difference was a non factor.
Braces aren’t that bad either and the dentist has way more control moving the teeth. I put it on 5 months ago and my teeth moved so fast, it’s painless too. The problem is biting your inner cheeks.
@@thesenutz777 first they made me 23 sets of aligners(1 per week). My dentist would only give me a few aligners at a time so she could closely monitor & check my progress when I came in for the next few. After the initial 23 they scanned my teeth again & made 19 more. That's just my case though, obviously every situation is different. Also, I had crowding on bottom so she did have to shave between certain teeth to make room. That was weird lol
I can’t believe what they told that man who LOST HIS TEETH to this. That was 100% due to their negligence. And the detriment those aligners would have done to their testers was CRAZY.
@@st6576 how do you know it was poor dental hygiene? Is he your patient? You could say that there were insufficient dentist visits to catch these problems. Some people develop cavities no matter how much care they take.
It’s so bad we had one patient who was doing smile direct and let me tell you it was a mess. He almost lost a tooth and he still kept on going about how cheap it it.
This is a lesson in frugality and when not to use it. Orthodontic treatment is expensive because you’re going to a specialist dentist. I would rather pay $5000 for a treatment and be assured that my teeth are healthy and come out straight rather than take the chance on something that is not CDA-approved. My orthodontic treatment cost me a little under $6000 but I am sure that it was customized to my needs and that I can always follow up with my orthodontist if I felt my teeth are becoming crooked again.
Another important thing to do before settling on an orthodontist is to shop around. One I went to wanted to charge me 6,000 did some shopping around and found one that did it for 4,500. I recieved a 1,250 discount because they are partnered with my dentist insurance company which was a plus and received an additional discount of 250 if paid in full.
My root canal cost me 1.3million tshs which is like 570$ add with additional costs and you get about 600$ and that's expensive for where I am but I don't regret it
I used Smile Direct, and while my teeth weren't perfect after, they were a hell of a lot better after. I wasn't expecting perfection for the price, but it did accomplish my goal of getting my teeth uncrowded enough to floss them and make them look much nicer. I don't have any bite issues either. However, this took 7-8 visits to the Smile Shop and 5 new projections and aligner sets to accomplish an almost perfect smile. I also managed to get most of my money back due to all the issues, so that was nice. The best thing about Smile Direct is that it has provided some desperately needed competition and forced other providers to drop their costs into the realm of affordability for more people. Before Smile Direct came here, it was an average of at least $10k for Invisalign (I went to about 10 different Orthodontists looking to correct my crowding), but I've noticed it is now about $5k. So that's been a great thing for Canada!
*This is why you go to a professional orthodontist! I spent a lot more than that on my Invisalign, but the results and journey has been nothing but satisfaction. You get what you pay for.*
Sean Tran I agree expect I had braces and a palate expander twice. It was worth the 5 years of orthodontist appointments, painful elastics, and cuts on my cheeks that I had because I could speak normally and I was more confident in the end. I'd rather go through that than some sketchy knock-off Invisilign like smile direct.
That's good to hear. I get my invisaligns in less than a month. And I'm so looking forward to it although it almost costs a fortune. I've been to a similar company than smile direct club and I didn't feel comfortable. My orthodontist told me I probably have to get rid of 4 teeth which in the end was true and they told me at that company that this won't be necessary. And they can fix my teeth within some months. It was just to good to be true.
Wow this is perfect. Please do more of this. I’m near half of my treatment but thank god im extremely mild. So sad others that have it worse go through this
Thank you CBC for the show! I am a victim of this scam. I agree, SmileDirectClub is really good at online advertising. I have checked their review on google map, it is almost five star. So I went to the SmileDirectClub office at Vaughan Ontario, and I paid $2095 for my son's teeth. Not only it did not work at all, they are asking me to pay another 2000 dollar because the fine print says the initial $2095 only covers the 05 Months treatment.
Three minutes in and all I can think about is (I have invisalign) how at 5 weeks into my treatment I needed an entirely different set of trays from what was initially made for me due to a couple stubborn teeth. Scares me to know people go without checking in with an ortho every so often! I can now see why this isn’t covered by dental insurance in the states. Yikes.
sardine07 I’m also going through with Invisalign. I had to get new sets along with bigger attachments a few months in and I always wondered while watching these smile direct club adds. I guess I got my answers...
Ashley Richardson every 3 months?? i mean it's better than nothing, but my treatment is only 14 weeks long. i'd have 2 trays left by the time i'd have my first check in with SDC. i am glad it's all working out for you though!!!
I recently finished ny invisalign treatment of in total 21 aligners (only lower teeth) My entire treatment was through an orthodontist and I had regular checkups. I think, that one of the differences between invisalign and other cheeper options is, that the glue spots with invisalign act as "brackets" (is that the right english word?) from traditional braces. The glue spots where changed a few times throughout the months to "pull" the teeth the right way. Those ligner in the video are pushing the teeth only by changing the shape of the plastic ligner. They can't for example pull a tooth further out. Moreover, my invisalign treatment came with extensive aftercare. I got a threat behind my theeth to keep them in place and I just went in to make a mould to get another "ligner" to use a couple of nights per month. (This is only because I had braces as a child but with a bad dentist so my teeth moved again. Therefore my new orthodontist want to be 10000% sure that nothing can move. Or if the threat gets loose, I have something to keep the teeth in place until I get an appointment)
My dentist stressed how they do not recommend this type of work. After going through with invisalign with my dentist now I fully understand. I would never recommend smile direct or anything out of the dentist office
@@ChopinSchubert Same thing happened to me when I lived in the US. I went to my first dentist appointment there for a regular checkup, and they cleaned my teeth, removed plaque and things like that, and then they told me I had three cavities that I needed to get taken care of, and they were gonna charge me a bunch of money for it. I ended up not going with the treatment because I knew I didn't have cavities. I came back to my home country of Colombia where dental care is very cheap yet extremely good quality and got another checkup and they told me I was completely cavity free, as I knew.
That's not true. They are actually dental assistants. However, SDC has made their role into more of a sales role. I've done a scan and they don't even stick a mirror in there to check for cavities. No basic double check. It's questionnaire, scan and gift bag and ur out.
@@nicolecrawford3479 I know they're dental assistants, however I feel they're behaving more like sales reps.. they sold out on actually caring for the patients to make more money..
OH MY GOD. I did a scan at one of their branches. everything was going well, until I told them that I wouldn't want to pay on the spot and that I would like to think about it. She said that I could do a down payment and they'll charge me later on. I said no and IMMEDIATELY, she got so passive aggressive, rude and disinterested. As she continued, she didn't smile even half as much as she did in the first 15 minutes of the meeting. She then creepily smiled and asked "I'm sorry, did you feel attacked?" I was so taken aback by this. My whole visit was also recorded (I gave them consent to do so.) She then asked if I could at least give them a 5 stars review and mention her name so she gets free pizza (the nerve) and I actually did.
My gf does this and the dentist checks up on her every month, they look so much better. And insurance paid for half so she paid the same price as smile direct 👍🏼
As Specialist Orthodontist, I recommend before orthodontic treatment, you look for these potential issues (your orthodontist will check these by taking X-rays and probing your teeth one by one!! at your first few initial appointments) 1-Any cavity, and restore them, they tend to get worse during treatment (you may need RCT and crown to save the tooth, extra cost!!) as you change the oral environment with fitting braces (or aligners), you need extra care and specific oral hygiene instructions 2-Any RCT tooth, (root canal treatment) they may get flareup, you end up having severe pain and infection, they may need re-treatment (RCT again), you may in the worst-case scenario have to remove them, leaving you with an extra cost of placing implant/bridge to replace the tooth 3-Any gingival recession or thin alveolar bone covering the roots of the teeth [this needs checking the teeth one by one and in some cases, CBCT(scan)], this can lead to more gingival recession, hypersensitivity and treatment for gingival recession is very costly, you need a gum graft 4-Any crown or existing tooth filling, the margins of the crown usually change as we move teeth and may leave you with unpleasant crown margins, some restorations may fail during brace treatment, all these things need prior check-up and care during treatment, which is a part of orthodontist job treating you
A F YES! This needs to be the top comment. I’m glad the dentist that returned the call at the end, suggested the patient see their dentist. Not as scummy as I imagined, but sad that less than 1% probably get to talk to a real dentist. This is a horrible option. There is a reason why it’s cheaper. And it’s not worth it! I’ve had a few patients put their children in this because they didn’t want to do extractions. I pleaded with them not to.... but they don’t care bc theyre saving money up front. But in the long run they will regret it
I got Invisalign from my general dentist. $3249 upfront. My insurance covered a thousand so I only paid $2249 out of pocket for the whole treatment. I'm 4 months in and I've seen major differences and no teeth lost. My appointments are every 3 months. I'm happy .
Why are dental authorities not identifying professionals who are working with this mail order system? They have wasted years policing advertising of quicker treatment but look the other way about bypassing important steps? Even general dentists who are trained to perform orthodontics refer at least half to the orthodontist. For SD to say they do most cases is crazy.
I've only known dentists/orthodontists to work with companies like Invisalign, where you are closely monitored during treatment & your aligners are sent to the professional, not directly to the patient.
From what I’ve heard their “professionals” are merely sales people trained to offer the scanning services and people who claim to be dentists with rather sketchy credentials. No trustworthy or self respecting dentist, orthodontist or dental care professional would ever align themselves with any of these “quick fix” companies
THANK YOU CBC. I know a friend who had their gums recede and go thin and they needed $5000 worth of gum grafting to help keep their teeth in the bone because Smile Direct Club pushed the teeth out too far.
I went an hour away from home to go to a smile direct club “store” and they checked my teeth. They said the same thing that they’ve seen “worse” cases. I have a massive overbite, overcrowding to the point where most of my teeth are overlapping each other, and there was no space for any teeth to be moved at all. At first they said I could definitely get approved so I got a loan just to get these aligners. A week later I get an email saying I wasn’t approved and that 3 orthodontist reviewed my case. I literally cried for an entire month because I always wanted straighter teeth but I was 18 and didn’t want braces. I’m now 19 and I’ve had braces for a year. 💀 just always go with the safer option. Braces SUCK but they get the job done safely.
Braces really aren’t that bad… The only frustrating thing is having to wear the retainer they give you once they are off. I stopped wearing mine, and my diastema opened slightly.
Smile Direct club doesn’t correct your bite, so if your bite is correct their aligners will gets will move your teeth to get them straight and screw up your bite. Also, In some cases if you have crowding you may need interproximal reduction which I needed but of course SDC doesn’t do that so when I got my scan a few years back they had to push out my bottom teeth to create space. Do not use this company, they will mess your teeth up even if you don’t notice. I went with Invisalign and I’m very pleased.
Before I get invisalign I need a couple of teeth pulled because my front teeth are crowded from my mouth being too small, and I'm too old now to have the palatte expander thing. (I'm hoping they pull out the ones that have cavities filled from when I was younger lol) Maybe someday I'll have a good job to pay for this!
Do not get these! I got them and I now have to have my teeth all redone as my bite is aligned incorrectly(And was told if I don't my jaw WILL erode and make it harder to eat), I have constant jaw pain and it clicks often, my aligners would break halfway through the set, the pain was awful, and I had to cut them to fit correctly and not slice my gums (If you don't believe me, they even say in a few emails you have to cut them to fit at points). Stay far far away!
I went through the process with Invisalign and can't imagine doing it without the regular appointments and checkups as you go. They required me to get my wisdom teeth out first to prevent shifting later, special nubs were placed on some teeth to help the aligners grab on at certain points, and at some appointments they had to create space for the teeth to move with special gritty sandpaper-ish strips. Definitely go to a real orthodontist, it's worth the cost.
i absolutely hated my experience with smile direct club. I also never sent pictures to any staff to ensure my smile was improving. Additionally one of my biggest concerns with my teeth was my molars being completely out of place. I ended up stopping because the pain was too great and the retainers stopped fitting on my lower teeth. I have since gone the traditional route and have only a few months left and even with the metal i still love the smile i have.
I went to get a free scan two months ago and I just had a gut feeling that the company was shady as hell. I'm SOOOO glad I told my mom I didn't want to get them
I keep getting these adds showing an animation of the teeth moving and as someone who needed braces and wore retainers, i know what that movement actually FEELS like. Pure pain. Feel bad for people who fall for this 😬
I had really crooked and crowded teeth and started Invisalign’s through my dental office, every month or so I was checked by an orthodontist and observed and my teeth are completely straight now. I was in Invisalign’s for 3 1/2 years, not a few months like this company is claiming. It took that long to prevent trauma to my teeth. I was watched, I was informed, I knew what was happening with my teeth. The fact that this company is claiming it can compare to that is absolutely crazy to me.
It’s impossible to treat an underbite with just an aligner!!! I’m not a professional but I know better. I had a severe overbite, and had to get jaw surgery and braces to properly correct the issue. SD is really out here scamming people!
Not every case has to have surgery to correct an underbite. I have an underbite and I'm using invisalign. I'll have to start wearing rubber bands in a few weeks, but I won't need surgery or an extraction in some cases, to correct it.
cupcake villain How do rubber bands work with Invisalign? And is your treatment plan from a dentist or orthodontist? There are a few factors that are considered by dental professionals. In some case, people may be able to use just rubber bands and rarely have I heard treating an under/ over bite with just an aligner as a sufficient treatment plan. In my case, the placement of my jaw was a critical factor in my treatment plan, and without surgery, orthodontics would not have been successful. I had metal braces for 1.5 years after surgery- and my smile, teeth placement, and profile are damn near perfect! I always wear my retainer- which is critical to maintain teeth placement permanently.
Invisalign It is monitored by a doctor that has to check up on you in person Or else lose their ability to work with the company and use their products... #OldDentalAssistant
@@yoabagaile right..i''m sure the doctor would check in but it felt to me like they're trying hard to sell the product instead of suggesting the best course of action.
Maybe for minor issues smile direct might be good. But with a severe crooked smile, you must go to a orthodontist and get braces. I had braces as a child. I had snaggle teeth and a very small mouth. I had to get 3 adult teeth removed in addition to all 4 wisdom teeth pulled. Smile direct wouldn't have been able to fix my smile.
My daughter just finished SDC with good results. Paid $1650 US up front. I was happy, and teeth look really good. She didn't have any major problems prior, like bite, so I think she was a good candidate.
Getting legit braces in Canada is actually pretty cheap compared to the rest of the world. To my fellow Canadians I really recommended seeing an orthodontist if you’re looking to get braces. This stuff only treats really minor cases
They gave me so many ongoing dental issues and refused a refund. They had me wear aligners for 3 years straight and my dentist finally told me to quit. I soooo regret not just paying for a professional orthodontist!
This works with mild cases. It worked for me. I had small gaps to close. I saw my dentist regularly and he followed my progress. I’m a yr in, using my retainer at night. So it worked for me. For big cases please see an orthodontist.
Missbrica30 exactly. It has worked for me, but some people have never been to a dentist then try smiles direct. My dentist is pleased with my progress as am I.
Missbrica30 same thing here! i had a gap and i still went into my my dentist every 2 months to do X-rays and stuff. i feel like people need to take more precautions doing stuff like this and it can save them more time and money.
Exactly!! I saw a dentist every 3 months who followed my progress. I had 2 friends who saw my finished result and signed up but i told them GO TO A DENTIST BEFOREHAND AND THROUGHOUT. Idk if they listened but im satisfied with my results. I only had minor gaps throughout the top 6 teeth to begin with.
Fast doggo dang i just opted for regular braces instead of invisalign because theyre cheaper, but also its harder to rotate canines with invisalign and thats my biggesr problem (lower canine rotated 90 degrees and causingcrowding). good thing is if you dont care how they look braces can actually be a more effective treatment
Teeth straightening requires subtle changes over a long period of time, smile direct club rushes this procedure often which may cause damage to ur teeth. Options like Invisalign cost more and require visits but that does mean that you are promised a good result.
It’s a scam!! I had braces when I was a teenager, my teeth were super straight but sadly I lost my retainer. Last year, I heard of Smiledirectclub, and thought oh cool, I can get a retainer for my bottom teeth that are a little crooked. I went in for the consultation, the lady’s were overly nice, like uncomfortably nice. You know when someone tries to butter you up before trying to make you purchase something expensive. Well, in the examination room, they took a 3D model scan of my mouth, my teeth looked so straight. She made it seem like my teeth were awful and that I need to get retainers right away because it will only get worse. I was like hmm okay, so how much is it, and she said $1,200 or something like that. And I was like that’s way to much, I rather just get regular braces if that’s the case. Anyways, after I left their office, I googled them and I noticed a lot of people end up messing up their teeth structure because of the retainers that they use or they end up with huge gaps
@@emily-bd1yu well I did have to have some additional work done before getting my braces and the whole bit is costing $8,000.00. That's for the metal braces too, not even ceramic!
All of the issues they stated are 1000% true. They ruined my teeth and I constantly called to try to talk to the doctor and constantly complained after I COULD NOT CLOSE MY MOUTH BECAUSE THEY MOVED TEETH THAT DID NOT NEED TO BE MOVED. All they did was constantly change my "prescription." I went to a dentist and they confirmed that the problems were the aligners. I left A VERY detailed negative review and continue to on any ads that pop up on my Facebook timeline.
Here is the statement provided by SmileDirectClub in response to our investigation: www.cbc.ca/marketplace/blog/correspondence-with-smiledirectclub ^akd
I've had pretty bad experiences with dentists.
Losing control of their dremmel and saying "oops"
Claiming that my cramps from a mis aligned bite after an overfill are imaginary.
Most recently I went in for a filling, while He was doing his thing He chuckled at a punch line on the TV (which he had turned up when he first entered) even the assistant noticed.
When i got out of the chair he said to me
"I also took away most of the tooth to stop you from grinding"
Which we did not discuss at all.
You would think you get your invoice right after they withdraw the money but I have to email 3 or more to get them
The media was right this is all a scam and that is the bureau receives these complaints.

Hey CBC can u do a video on fashion nova bcuz they're lowkey a shady business...

Underbitelover found the SmileDirectClub shill
If you don’t want their aligners don’t get them 😂 no ones holding you down and shoving them in your mouth don’t worry 😂😂
Same, for me they took cranial scans every other visit
Always listen to an orthodontist, she’s right.
These "simple" tools, I believe, are for minor problems only.

Lollll Girl they are not dentists. They're dental assistants. They shouldn't be advising anyone that much.
Scrubs, gloves, masks, glasses/face shields otherwise I could get sick, get my patient sick, spread diseases to other patients, spread diseases to my family, etc. if I were to dress myself like the smile direct club employees.
there are some ladies wearing dentist attire in flea markets for a $99 white zoom laser product they sell, do not be fooled
That's why some scammers wear white lab coats and scrubs, for simpletons like you who are easily manipulated and impressed by attire and bling.
First they were not dentists. Second, I wouldn’t judge by what they are wearing. I have been in the dental field for almost 10 years. Most doctors I have worked for wear business attire unless on surgery days. However, with covid that will all be changing and all will be mandated to wear scrubs that are kept at work.

As much as I hate braces, this makes me feel better about having them, especially with a severe case.

I wasted $2k on this and it didn’t do anything. Get Invisalign and save time and money! Because I had to get Invisalign after this.
Jemimah DeCastro Mine was $5k. My office has a flat rate of $5k for full invisalign and $2,800 for invisalign lite.
Wow thanks for the heads up. i used to work at wework and the company rented a space out of it and there were so many customers. how did it damage your teeth? Also whats invasalign full and lite ?
Same! I have to get regular braces or at the least Invisalign after this whole ordeal
Woah I'm blown away. I just sent in my impressions last week and was gonna pay in full after seeing how it'll look after the treatment. You saved me, thank you.

“I’m a certified itero technician”...girl, you do not have to be certified to use an itero, as a CDA, I don’t need a certification to take scans...
My orthodontist did the invisalign scan with me even though they were pretty confident my issues were too severe and it was literally just an assistant that did the scan lol.
It's possible that "certified itero technician" is an internal certification through the company. A fancy term for completing her training maybe
@@brettdomenick It is another way of deceiving you. I have never heard of such thing and I work in several dental offices.
Yes there is no certification. We got the machine and we tried it on staff members and that’s it. You don’t take course for that.
No certification needed to do a iTero scan!
Hey quick question, you got braces as well as Invisalign at the same time? Can you tell us why or how your situation lead to that? Thank you :)
That part is true. You can’t need any dental work prior to orthodontics treatment.

you could try invisilines, it’s a little cheaper but they go through the whole process
A lot of licensed orthodontists do Invisalign I currently have them and it’s a two year process for me. Mine were €4000. They go through a longer more investigated process of looking at your teeth and send a scan to my orthodontist every week to show them how it’s going.
Invisalign and 3M Aligners are the only types of aligners you should get. Forget everything else.

My dentist quoted me 1600$ for Invisalign since I only need it on the top. I went to SD and they said minimum is 2300$😂😂BYE
Where'd you go for invisalign?
@@Lianawuzhere I'm currently on in invisalign right now and the way I got my invisalign was through my dentistry, they have an orthodontist that comes every tuesday and they checked my teeth and recommended me for invisalign.

So true!

The problem is biting your inner cheeks.
eopanther8 how long is your treatment plan? Just curious bc I’m thinking about getting them

Are you doing it through an orthodontist? I was thinking about getting them but now Idk lol. Is it just as fast as smile direct club?
I recently finished ny invisalign treatment of in total 21 aligners (only lower teeth)
My entire treatment was through an orthodontist and I had regular checkups.

My gf does this and the dentist checks up on her every month, they look so much better. And insurance paid for half so she paid the same price as smile direct 👍🏼
As Specialist Orthodontist, I recommend before orthodontic treatment, you look for these potential issues (your orthodontist will check these by taking X-rays and probing your teeth one by one!! at your first few initial appointments)
1-Any cavity, and restore them, they tend to get worse during treatment (you may need RCT and crown to save the tooth, extra cost!!) as you change the oral environment with fitting braces (or aligners), you need extra care and specific oral hygiene instructions
2-Any RCT tooth, (root canal treatment) they may get flareup, you end up having severe pain and infection, they may need re-treatment (RCT again), you may in the worst-case scenario have to remove them, leaving you with an extra cost of placing implant/bridge to replace the tooth
3-Any gingival recession or thin alveolar bone covering the roots of the teeth [this needs checking the teeth one by one and in some cases, CBCT(scan)], this can lead to more gingival recession, hypersensitivity and treatment for gingival recession is very costly, you need a gum graft
4-Any crown or existing tooth filling, the margins of the crown usually change as we move teeth and may leave you with unpleasant crown margins, some restorations may fail during brace treatment, all these things need prior check-up and care during treatment, which is a part of orthodontist job treating you

OUCH that sounds painful and horrible
Ugh, that sounds terrible :/
Omg :-//
Sue them
13:54 - And organizations like SmileDirect don't do this because they aren't doctors, they are business entities.
I am so grateful I saw this piece!
You did the right thing. Unfortunately I wasnt as lucky and I fell for their scam... my teeth are destroyed now.
Wow they said the same thing to me - “we like no’s in this place”.
Braces SUCK but they get the job done safely.
horse lover12 HA AHA HA YEAH OKAY.
Braces really aren’t that bad… The only frustrating thing is having to wear the retainer they give you once they are off. I stopped wearing mine, and my diastema opened slightly.
i have same case as u i have my braces for less than 2yrs and its getting better and better.
@A. I'm sorry you're stuck with braces. XO.
@@a.8901 I've had braces for 9 years and I'm 22, they really aren't that bad.
Yup! If you're not using a company that works through the dentist/orthodontist, you're asking for trouble.
The guy with the front gap has the most beautiful smile 🥺
Gaps mean wisdom. It's sad he doesn't like his smile
Creepy comment dude.
Nick Tomkin how?? it’s a compliment lol
Diane Aisha Monday i closed my gap): i hated it
xo kaylee I did too and I regret it:-/
Funny how when they show the progress simulator is says “Invisalign outcome simulator” 5:24
Natalie E. Art omg i didn’t notice that
Lmfao 😁😂😂😂
I think they were bought by Invisalign.
"Dismissive" is an understatement . Market place is a platform that brings outcomes not just commotion. Thanks guys.
I’m glad I didn’t go through with this, the talk about the cost was longer than the “consultation” and they kept bugging me to buy it
I went to get a free scan two months ago and I just had a gut feeling that the company was shady as hell. I'm SOOOO glad I told my mom I didn't want to get them
Successful user. You will be fine.
@@Andrei2000PC Yeah which dental school did you go to bud? Just because you were successful doesn't mean she will be.
The 'dentist' he got on the phone sounds like he's in the car lmao
100% agreed. Someone with his issue needs regular braces and elastics.
Finally some real journalism... What it was made to do! Would like to see such insight on ins and outs of invisalign ans bigger brands too
Invisalign It is monitored by a doctor that has to check up on you in person Or else lose their ability to work with the company and use their products...

My dentist always told me to stay away from fast and easy teeth straignters
What about Invisalign?
@@oof8421 Invisalign is always dentist approved
Getting legit braces in Canada is actually
pretty cheap compared to the rest of the world. To my fellow Canadians I really recommended seeing an orthodontist if you’re looking to get braces. This stuff only treats really minor cases
For those who have dental insurance through work it's not so bad.
My unfortunate friend is ordering this because he has no papers in Canada and is afraid to go to the dentist. Hope it works out for him
Even with insurance it's about 5-7Gs
Hello, may i ask wht was the problem yu had? I just started and mine will be shipped in a few wks, i think my smile is mild also
If your questioning about doing this don’t just get you’re money up and get braces
I have Invisalign’s which are more expensive than braces and they are the best
it is best to slowly deal with dentist... since like it or not.. your teeth are non replaceable..

Wrong. Smile direct club was amazing for me.
Teeth straightening requires subtle changes over a long period of time, smile direct club rushes this procedure often which may cause damage to ur teeth. Options like Invisalign cost more and require visits but that does mean that you are promised a good result.
You can wear each aligner longer
It’s not a scam
You should be able to go to your ortho for another retainer! Mine are only $25 a piece, might be Krow for you. But call!!!
I went in, hard core “used car” sales tactics. Was super high pressure
This makes me feel so much better about paying $8,000.00 for my braces :)
8,000 holy moly!!!
@@emily-bd1yu well I did have to have some additional work done before getting my braces and the whole bit is costing $8,000.00. That's for the metal braces too, not even ceramic!
@@CRob-my7gq omg wow

All of the issues they stated are 1000% true. They ruined my teeth and I constantly called to try to talk to the doctor and constantly complained after I COULD NOT CLOSE MY MOUTH BECAUSE THEY MOVED TEETH THAT DID NOT NEED TO BE MOVED. All they did was constantly change my "prescription." I went to a dentist and they confirmed that the problems were the aligners. I left A VERY detailed negative review and continue to on any ads that pop up on my Facebook timeline.
