Exorcist 3 is criminally underrated, George C Scott was great in it
nice death pfp
frankage Just what I thought.
@```` I haven't seen any of the sequels besides the original, but I'm willing to bet none of them come close. However, Exorcist 3 seems pretty interesting.
I have to agree. We can throw ‘2’ out of the window.
Exorcist 3 was a GREAT movie. Easily stands on its own.
Perhaps the only thing weirder than an older actor playing a younger version of an older character played by a younger actor is an actor playing an old character while young, then years later the actor, now older, playing the younger version of that character: Ian McDiarmid as Senator/Emperor Palpatine.
that's quite a mouthful
The emperor in star wars
Dominion was never really finished, the special effects are actual place holders that were supposed to be overwritten in post-production but it never got a post-production thus the cheesy special effects.
SOMEBODY STOP ME!
David Goscinny I was wondering why the movie looked so gosh dern cheap. Really looked dark as in poor lighting and filming. The second version was better but clearly was hollywoodized
Smokin’!
Yeah, the CGI hyenas were pretty bad.
Yup, Paul Schrader wasn’t given extra money to finish the movie
I honestly think they messed up not turning Exorcist into an anthology series with new bizarre cases each film
Tekno Pathetic RIP Halloween 3
Tekno Pathetic they kinda did that with the exorcist of emily rose
That's kind of what I was thinking about the Chernobyl diaries. They could do extreme Toryism in other forbidden places and have a different cast, story etc. The only thing that really needed to connect them was the idea of the extreme tourism at these different forbidden locations. Called (fill in the blank) Diaries. Maybe the forbidden forest in Japan For example. I think that would have been better than that piece of ship movie , the forest, that came out
The try with the Series, which was pretty good but only lasted two seasons
The book do have follows ups, the book trilogy is The Exorcist, The Ninth Configuration and Legion, all 3 adapted to film already with 9th configuration also known as “Twinkle, Twinkle Killer Kane”, also directed by William Peter Blatty
Never heard of an entire film being a deleted scene then remade then released after the remake
Solo and Justice League.
ajzeg01 Fan4stic & X-Men Dark Phoenix
@@ajzeg01 the original versions of these movies weren't released afterwards tho
@@flo.g. snyder cut coming now
That's what happens when the studio is contractually obligated to release both director's versions of the film.
Exorcist III: Legion is the only one in the series to have a real visceral effect on me. Severely underrated.
What you mean by visceral effect?
Agreed. Some people dont like some of the acting choices, or the move towards detective thriller, but it was very, very good.
Clay3613 if E1 didn’t then I give you no credibility.
@@bloodtimemaximusfullthrott226
Correct.

But its true the acting feels very pretentious in The Exorcist 3, the way they talk feels like they are in some Shakespeare stage production ... the final confrontation really have that stage theatrical play production feeling with the lighting and rigid camera works etc, not very realistic looking ... the side characters acting are soooo bad, almost comically funny like The Room's acting ... too many dramatic zoom-in camera works, too many overly dramatic verbal outburts, too many dramatic theatrical spot lights, too many dramatic sound effects when something happens ... all these qualities really prevents it from remotely considered a great movie for me, I just can't ignore these negative aspects when watching the movie ....
Never heard of these... interesting.
They're both shit.
It's funny how totally forgotten they are.
RageJoona The Beginning was directed by Renny Harlin :D
The Long Kiss Goodnight was the last good movie Harlin directed.
Nitrobotti - Oh... hi there and Really? :3
To tell the truth, I've never been much of a fan of Harlin's work, even though I do appreciate the fact that he is the only Finnish director to make himself a succesful career in Hollywood :3
Personal favorite movie from him is Nightmare Part 4.
It speaks wonders that Gorillaz used the statue of Pazuzu more than The Exorcist movies XD
rock it song right?
Magnum_Koichi well I’m pretty damn sure, blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. That song was really blah blah, i always blah blah blah (collapse).
They never meant to do it...
It loved them in their head...
TheMrRuttazzo The world is very sexy. It's part of my collapse
Who?
James is a fantastic movie critic!
But is he the Nostalgia Critic tho?
They are both passionate about film and work well together!!
Yes
BILLVLOGS for real, though.
Billvlogs hes really not lol
I’ve always said the prequel story in Africa should’ve been the whole basis behind “Exorcist 2”. Max von sydow was young enough to play a young Merrin. All the pieces would’ve fit, behind a good director, and we would’ve had a kick ass prequel.
These two films at Blockbuster at the same time confused my little pre-teen mind so much. It took me like 6 months to figure out what happened and that I didn't imagine one of them. I just could not wrap my head around the idea that they would make an entire movie just to scrap it, remake it with the same leading actor, and then just turn around and release them both anyway.
I love Exorcist the beginning, I think is the beat of the two, it feels more in tone with the original film and the overall plot is well developed, the last scenes are cheap but still creepy if are watched at midnight in the darkness
"Being campy and being a masterpiece are actually much closer together than people think".
Well said, James. Well said.
The Mask-Exorcist would be a great movie. Would watch 10/10.
So.... basically it would be Jim Carry trolling a couple of priests? I'm sold.
Krn Srt
The comics of the Mask would be right up your alley. The movie was never supposed to be a comedy but it still turned out well.
Richter Matthias... OR Jim Carrey performing exorcisms as the mask.
It is in fact a possessed pagan mask that takes over people's minds.
They keep doing gritty reboots of movies that absolutely don't need them, but a gory Mask reboot that more closely followed the comics would be awesome.
Exorcist 3 is a genuinely great film, never thought of it as a mixed bag. To each their own I guess.
Exorcist 3 IMO is better than the original Exorcist. I think so anyways
Scared the hell out of me.
It's actually very well put together in terms of creepy atmosphere, until Patrick Ewing shows up in the dream sequence. It takes you (well, me at least) right out of the film.
They somehow even managed to make a randomly-inserted Joker statue give you the creeps; they couldn't pull that off with Patrick Ewing. They should've left his scene on the cutting room floor.
Yep! Exorcist 3 was excellent!..✌️💚
"Being campy and being a masterpiece are actually closer together than most people think." That's a great insight, James, thanks.
Another interesting thing is how Father Merrin was played by 2 Swedish Actors.
That was my exact thought
Patrik Öhrström I was really convinced that he would say it.
I was slightly dissapointed.
me too
thunder wolf IDK, I haven’t seen it
Only watched "Dominion" myself but yes go ahead and watch it too. It's such a mixed bag of mediocre, bad, awful, and schlock. Laughed my trick knee off!
Aww man he didn't mention my favorite scene in the beginning where it shows a little boy being eaten by hyenas in the shadows and then slowly pans down to show you the gore. That was amazing
Cameras "pan" laterally. They "tilt" vertically.
That's the only thing i remember from the movie
That scene scare the shit out of me, it was awesome
I really liked the beginning, the atmosphere had me on edge throughout.
The Exorcist 3 was actually scary to me because of the scene with the possessed killer in the hospital with the bone shears.
I remember seeing bits and pieces of these two films when they used to air on cable TV, but I never understood what was going on in them other than taking place before the events of the original film. I wonder if they'd ever make some sort of connection between The Beginning and Dominion where the characters travel through an alternate dimension. I've been watching The Exorcist TV series as well which is pretty good.
I like Exorcist the Beginning for the few bits James mentions as being a breath of fresh air and the blood pumping ending.
I Always though the begging was incredible. One of my all time favorites. Never got why so many people didn't like it. It's super creepy. Great acting and special effects.
Begging for it.
I also love it one of the horror movies that rich in story
I actually liked the Beginning it was creepy and the story wasn't too bad.
Pazuzu is more than a Demon, he was a god. Being tied tot he southwest wing. he is a god of famine and Locust, but also a Rival to the Evil Goddess Lamashtu, Though Pazuzu being acknowledged as a evil deity, he aslo protected mothers and young Children From Lamashtu , who preyed on them, And He also Protected against Plagues and Misfortunes
Now that IS interesting. Live and learn!
I had to receive an exorcism once when I was little, it was scary but I don't remember too much about it. Just that I was very upset.
But generally, the Christian explanation is that what the pagans called "gods" are demons.
Pazuzu is in the SMT video games and it said he was a good deity so that always confused me. Also Pazuzu saves the professor in Futurama lol.
XxnamcoxcapcomxX Right!, I forgot that Futurama reference...
My god these reviews are great! This is easily one of my favorite RUclips channels
This was one of your best reviews yet! Thanks for this thoughtful and interesting view of these 2 messed up movies!
the exorcist 3 is an amazing movie. one of the best horror/psychological thrillers out there.
The guy playing the nazi commander is a Dutch actor named Antonie Kamerling. A great dutch actor who went down through his own demons he committed suicide in 2010.
The curse continues?
And?
Declaneo and what?
Heli Heathen cause when the exorcist came out when people saw it people barfed and woman broke her neck while watching it the original actors for it died when they were acting
So it's a cursed film
SOMEBODY STOP ME!!! lmao that was great. Awesome videos man they certainly have kept me in the Halloween spirit keep up the great work.
I think Dominion is a legitimately great movie. It's not for everyone, but I think it does what it sets out to do as well as any movie has. I actually like Exorcist: The Beginning as well.
The Exorcist, Exorcist III and Dominion actually make for a pretty nifty trilogy.
I remember watching both of these and remember wondering at the time, why they both seemed to occupy the same timeline within the story.
Max von Sydow and Stella Skarsgård are both from Sweden - also a fun fact ^^
Monotaku9 Stellan Skarsgård is Bill Skarsgård's (Pennywise) Father (another fun fact)
Alex LeBlanc thanks ^^ but yeah I know. :)
Thanks for doing the review. I don't know if you had it planned or not but thanks for doing the review. Keep up the good work James 👍
Exorcist 3 is so underrated imo....GCS was great in it. Also loved the Brad Dourif "Child's Play" line. That had to be intentional right?
Funny you reviewed these. I actually just pulled out a brand new copy of The Beginning from storage. Might give it a watch now haha. Great timing, James.
I find your analyses spot on, sir... I feel that you and I share a very similar aesthetic appreciation for the quality of movies... If I had to choose I would give the beginning the nod. I feel that that was a better story, I enjoyed the ending as well as the cast, and I always thought that female lead was pretty... Ever since she was in Goldeneye
nice work James thank you
Great review, I hardly if ever see camp in a Friedkin film. What’s great about Friedkin movies of 70-80 was that they took themselves seriously. The Exorcist is a masterpiece because it succeeds on ALL levels ( dialog-acting-music-sound-directing ) where as the sequels always had something missing.
I always felt the little child should have somehow been James Earl Jones from Exorcist II to tie that together. But clearly that would have taken some level of reworking and remind people that it exists
Good review my man. I never saw Dominion since the rabbit hole ending at "The Beginning" was just so dry to follow. I did like how dirty the nurse was at the end, but like you said it was like a treat for hanging around. I've always felt they could have done more with these movies, but they just tried to hard to not disappoint crowds from the original.
I loved "The Beginning"
Exorcist 3 is amazing. It's my favorite one, by far.
As someone who's been a long time subscriber I haven't really seen much of these monster madness reviews, but seeing them now, I'm a fan, time to binge
Great review James! I agree with your assessment on both films. You know the expression, third time's a charm...maybe they should scrap both films and remake it one more time, taking the best elements of both, thereby creating the final "good" version. Hey what can it hurt at this point.
I did hear they released the lost directors cut of Exorcist III and the general consensus says it's great.
It's good, but not as good as the theatrical cut. It does include a few bits I would have preferred to be kept in the final cut, like a scene between Kinderman and the University Priest discussing what happened to Karras' body and who tended to it, digging up Karras' body to discover it's not him, a small bit of the Gemini Killer attempting to toy with Kinderman's mind, a small scene with a nurse that explains why she's yelling "WHO STUCK THIS GUY?!" in the theatrical cut, but it's not as good as the theatrical cut. Brad Dourif's performance is much more subdued and the ending is anti-climatic as all hell, so if someone were to mix the two version together with clever editing that'd be great.
trustno173 Ah right, so in a way we are getting two good films with different tones kind of like the prequels, I can dig that. I will check the directors cut out sometime.
Hey man, thanks for the video. Just seeing the Exorcist got me interested and I was curious if you were thinking about doing a review on the 1982 Poltergeist? I think it is a great movie but I'd like to see a review on it, just for fun.
Thanks again for the video and have a great day!
James could you please make a review of suspiria, tenebrae & phenomena? :) ;)
Thanks for this video, didn't know about this 2 versions before (just the beginning)
I still think Exorcist 2 is pretty good, just way too different from the original. It's definitely not as bad as people say.
Exorcist 3 on the other hand, is fuckin' great, the cast is excellent. Highly underrated.
Hairy Cornflake WHAT?!?!??! Dude, def to each his own on that one.
Thank you for this review. I thought I had went crazy when I saw the two of the movies and only saw the Dominion one since now. I liked the version with the woman being possessed.
Great review mate
Oh, speaking of Psycho, I was wondering if you are considering reviewing all the Psycho movies, Psycho, Psycho 2, Psycho 3, Psycho 4: The Beginning, Bates Motel (1987), and the Psycho *bleh* (1998) remake?
I saw the one with the chick on AMC. I never knew the guy was in BOTH movies! Major thanks for doing this review
Pretty sure his son (Bill Skarsgård) played pennywise in the new IT
Thanks a lot, James for removing my Confusion regarding this movie...
Great reviews!
Saw "Exorcist - the beginning" at the movies when it came out in Sweden. It was a big hype that two Swedes were in it (Skarsgård and Izabella Scorupco). As you know Max von Sydow also is Swedish so we were like - wow (not really). Nothing beats the original.
The statue is Pazuzu.
Love your reviews. What about review Halloween series and Evil Dead?
I remember Exorcist the beginning, I saw it a couple times in tv, it creeped me out but that maybe because the power wet out in my house every time it was on
Exorcist 3 was amazing! The whole way through. I don't know what this nonsense about it having "moments" is.
Yep!..✌️💚
@Derek McCumber Cheers!✌️💚
@Derek McCumber Hey man, does the novel covers the events of the 3 movies? I would google it, but I don't wanna be spoiled.
I thought James edited that picture where the demon overlaps his face until he said it was one of the worst effects he had ever seen.
Deadwolf o thought it was an overlap until I read your comment
To be fair, he was showing a still shot of something that was only on the screen for a split second. You can notice how bad it is while watching normally, but you kind of have to be looking for it.
blueishgreen76 oh yeah. I hear there's a scene in the original evil dead where you can see part of the tubing the blood comes out or something like that but I've never been able to spot it.
The remaking of the film sounds similar to the situation with the Han Solo movie.
The original Japanese "Ring" movie was released with an official sequel called "Rasen," both adapted from the original novels by Koji Suzuki. "Ring" was a huge hit, but "Rasen" was a huge flop. So the studio wrote an entirely new sequel with a completely different story and called it "Ring 2." It did much better at the box office, so it is now considered the "official" sequel...
I been watching this guy for at least 10 years glad I found him again
I prefer "Dominion" over "The Beginning", but I would like to have seen the fan service (the statue, etc) from "The Beginning" in "Dominion". I didn't hate the movie, but it would've made it better. A little fan service goes a long way with me.
Ive seen both of these movies on cable over the years. Might pick up Dominion since I really enjoy the ending since it puts you on alert and its just plain fucking wicked.
Ya'll got any suggestions what movies i should watch this October?
Interesting analysis, thanks. I thought this double-prequel situation was fascinating. I found Dominion to be too slow-moving but more intellectually satisfying. I thought The Beginning was more entertaining in a traditional way, but more of a by-the-book horror flick. I'd give the edge to Dominion, but I kind of like them both.
Concur! Dominion was just a bit more mature and psychological for me!
I wish they'd let James pitch an idea for one of these remakes.
"A younger actor plays the older version, and the older actor plays the younger version" Made me think of Ian McDiarmid :)
Did Mike do this title card? It's probably my favorite he's ever done
Excellent video once gain
Basically Dominion is the OG Snyder Cut xD
I agree with you james. I enjoyed both dominion and ETB but felt if they met halfway, it could have worked bettee.
I think, this many years later, I like Harlan's version best, looking back on them both in 2018.
The stillbirth scene in Dominion was pretty brutal...
I remember seeing TV Spots for "Exorcist:The Beginning" and bits of both versions on television. To be honest, I still haven't sat through the original "Exorcist", and I have a "Special Extended Edition" on good old DVD. Really need to watch it sometime.
What are you waiting for?...it´s a real experience !!!
Awesome comic book cover!
Wow, thank god for this! you know how long ive waited to see anyone talk about how they reshot TWO MOVIES! and by the way, I've looked everywhere to try and Watch Dominion .. But I haven't. I remember seeing The Beginning and was actually surprised at how good it actually was! Some scenes were generally scary and fucking creepy! Love the idea of a Satanic Temple being buried on purpose! the chills!
I've seen both these movies only on satellite TV over the years. I like Exorcist The Beginning over Dominion prequel and of course the original Exorcist movie that started it all is the best in the franchise of movies in my opinion.
The Nazi was portrayed by the late Dutch actor Anthonie Kamerling, may he rest in peace. Great review!
Which is better? This one or the other version released in 2005?
I watched one of them when I was stationed in Iraq back in 2005 as a bootleg DVD and thought it was crap. Though it had some good moments.
Isn't Iraq where the original demon was found? scary
Matthew W I think so
Jay Mike I think one was in Kenya and the other in Iraq.
I wondered if you could make a "top ten" list of scary movies for Halloween.
And to think, I just asked about these movies here yesterday... Very nice timing.
I wonder if someone could edit scenes from both films together into a single movie? The lead actor is the same in both as is the plot, it would be interesting.
Woody Allen shot September twice, with substantially different casts; the second one was released.
This cleared up the confusion I've long had about the Exorcist franchise and no wonder, they made and released the damn prequel *twice*
Didn't even know that these existed.
Anyway, will you do even the Exorcits tv series?
Good shit James. Thanks.
Great still picture film, James
They should make a supercut of these movies lol
Where i can get that t-shirt?
Dominion had the story and acting that Beginning should have had. Beginning had the atmosphere and effects that Dominion should have had. What a weird turn out.
Talk about ec comics
What horror movies do you guys recommend that are on Netflix? I watched Teeth, Hostel, Halloween, and Stiches so far. Oh, and that one movie where they kidnap a girl in a mansion or something.
Rikku Freak clown, was okay. If it's still on Netflix.
Depends on what kind of horror you are into? If you enjoy a serious horror movie with random comedic elements I recommend Deathgasm.
Kiernan5 Thanks I'll check it out!
Rikku Freak I suggest Babadook, Last Shift, Baskin, It Follows, Gremlins, and Hellraiser. Enjoy!
Hotel Transylvania 2
Any chance of a video about the TV series?
James, have you ever seen Funny Games? The original movie was shot in German, but the director remade the movie shot for shot 20 years later with an American cast. I know it's not the same situation as these movies, but similar.
grindcoremaniac Let The Right One In and Let Me In is similar as well!
The original is a Austrian film from 1997 and the American version was made 10 years later (2007), not 20
Also, the Vanishing. The director made the original in 1988 and then remade the movie in America 5 years later
You're right. Got my math wrong lol. Also meant they spoke German, not that it was shot in Germany.
grindcoremaniac
I can't stand that movie. It is such a bore.
Prequels... Some things are best when left to the imagination. And the same goes with sequels.
4:18 He became Dahlsim from Street Fighter II?
🤣🤣
