He was apparently offered the role of big boss in metal gear solid 3 and ended up turning it down for an unstated reason. Really makes you wonder what could have been if he was the voice for a character based on Snake Plissken in a roundabout way.
Seeing the old man struggling to get the blob off of his hand genuinely scared me as a kid. The way he so genuinely is terrified that he can't get it off hit me deeper than any jumpscare because of how real he sounded.
The KING you’re sitting down at dinner and your son yells, “Halloween 2009 is the best horror movie re-“ BANG HAMMER! Over his head giving him a concussion
Glad to see The Blob get some sort of recognition. It's a great flick that was filmed in my hometown. I was there on the sidelines as they were filming it.
same for me, nothing scared my pants of as a kid as that movie. now I just cant enough of Rob Bottins awsome effects. Even though John sent him to the hospital he delivered the best.
I'm glad to hear James liked The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) also. My friends and I really enjoyed it when we watched it in theaters. I was surprised people didn't like it
I remember the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake being an okay horror film, but I judge it harshly because it wasn't an original film made for less than $300,000 in 1974. They had an extra 30 years and $10 million more dollars to come up with something better and didn't. I don't hate it, but it is somewhat disappointing. These remakes get a lot more money to play with it and they don't do anything original with it.
My top 5 horror remakes: 1-The Thing (82) 2-Nosferatu (79) 3-The Fly (86) 4-Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (31,original version is from 1920) 5-Invasion of the body snatchers (76)
no the 1956 version is the best. The 78 version is not that good. It doesn't have the mystery and the sinister tone of the 56 version. The alien dog at the end of the 78 version was a WTF moment.
I agree, however it is more of a horror/sci-fi hybrid. It is definitely a product of its time thought. Pure 70's sci fi cheesy greatness. It may not have as good as the original, but it's still a classic in its own right. Just rewatched it, and i still love it to this day.
Big Guy617 I actually like the 1978 version better. It put the invasion on a much grander scale. Instead of being a small town, it’s the city of San Francisco. And there’s no “Government mobilizing to try to stop the invasion” scene at the end. Instead we get one of the main characters seeing Donald Sutherland’s character and expressing her relief that he made it out of the city, and he turns around and starts screaming, revealing that he is taken over by the aliens. Awesome scene. And I have no idea what you are talking about with the alien dog. I don’t remember that scene in the movie at all. But then again, it has been a long time since I’ve watched it, so I may have forgotten something.
Among all these remakes, The Thing (1982) is among my favorite movies ever and I kinda liked the Fly (1986). I'm really interested in Blob (1988) because it seems a really great movie. Now thanx to your video I'm curious about House Of Wax (1953) and the Hammer movies!
The Omega Man should be on this list. Not exactly 'horror' but it definitely has it's place in vampire/zombie history. It's also technically a remake of The Last Man on Earth
I'm so glad that you put the Hammer films as number one! Even the latter day films like Captain Kronos (ok; not a remake, but still) are refreshing takes on vampire films... but the one thing that the three Hammer flims mentioned have in common are the director: Terrence Fisher. I can't quite understand why he's not celebrated more - it was his vision, after all, that contributed to the success of these (and subsequent Frankenstein and Dracula's; not to mention Curse of the Werewolf and The Gorgon)... All hail the Fisher King!
+The Boss Stage1 Compared to 90% of modern horror films, IT barely had any. Whilst not absolutely fantastic, I thought it was still pretty decent. Far better than the original.
IMO the last good Horror remakes were Let the Right One In , Fright Night and the Crazies which came out during 2010-2011. Since then yeh IT seems to be the only good horror remake.
IT sucks, well, every scene with pennywise sucks, the child actors are amazing, but literally every "scary" scene begins and ends the same way, *slooooooow build with quiet music.......LOUD NOISE BOO HAUNTED HOUSE*
The Fly and The Thing (the 80's versions) have some of the most gruesome and well made special effects I've ever seen. It's funny how movies made 30-35 years ago can look so visually superior to what's being made today.
Solid picks all around. The Thing is my all-time best horror movie. The paranoia + the unforgettable effects are simply the perfect combination. Also, love the way you framed your N1, haha.
Amazing list of films. Although I do think that The Ring (2002) is a better film than The Grudge (2004), the remake of The Grudge actually made the story easier to understand than Ju-On: The Grudge.
Glad to see the Blob get some cred - underappreciated and very entertaining! My personal taste; did not like any "dead" sequels, but liked remake of D o t D. Body Snatchers could use an honorable mention.
Have to give a shout out to the fantastic credits theme of The Blob, "Brave New Love". Made me go out and grab the Alien album immediately after I saw it!
House of Wax from 2005 is a Remake of Tourist Trap from 1979 It was given the name House of Wax cause the producers wanted for the Nostalgia (Getting butts into seats, also the marketing for it)
The only thing that sucks about PG-13 horror movies is that much of the time they were originally R rated and had the content, but were slashed up or pussyfied down to PG-13 to get a wider audience. That more than anything is why I believe people hate it when a horror movie is released as PG-13.
Friday the 13th (2009) deserves mention, but I can see James counting that as a sequel rather than a remake. The basic story could fit into the the originals. It was one of the few remakes/reboots that captures the feeling of the originals.
This video mad me realize that Tom savini acted in dusk till dawn and many other Robert Rodriguez films and other classics thank you James your doing God’s work
I will say The Thing definitely deserved it's spot on this list. Of all the horror movies I've seen, that one left the most lasting impression for A: the amazingly disgusting physical special effects (still better than any CGI I've seen thus far), and B: the paranoid, "trust no one" suspense that consumed the entire film. Just the thought that the creature could be literally anyone, even your own house pets, and what it did to it's victims left a lasting impression on me. lol Others have spooked me for an evening or two as well for sure, but The Thing is one I always remember the most.
I watched The Grudge when I was WAY too young for it (about 10 years old) and I've regretted it ever since because it scared me so bad, I now refuse to watch it even as an adult.
nice shoutout to IT in the description. my Top 10 would be: 1. The Ring 2. The Thing (1982) 3. IT (2017) 4. The Mummy (1999) 5. The Fly (1986) 6. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) 7. The Grudge 8. Funny Games (2007) 9. Last House on the Left (2009) 10. Evil Dead (2013)
Great video James, I dunno if you've heard of it but I think you'd get a real kick out of the BBC series "The League Of Gentlemen" it was a creepy comedy that played on a lot of Hammer traits. The Christmas special is done in the style of a Hammer Portmanteau and is SERIOUSLY funny and creepy in equal measure.
I hear ya, James. I really enjoyed the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake too. I thought "The Thing" was going to be number 1.. but hey, close enough! Great list.
Eh, it's your list, but I think Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) deserves, at the very least, an honorable mention. People think Keanu Reeve's awkward performance cripples the whole movie, but it really doesn't. He's not even the main character, and the creators, who admitted they just chose him for star-power (or something like that), knew this, hence their casting decision. It sucks how people let this overshadow how fucking AWESOME Gary Oldman is as Dracula, goofy makeup and all (I also hate how that's the only other thing people bring up about this movie), and Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing. I especially love how every character is either a little crazy or downright INSANE. Definitely an underrated movie, but again, this is your list. Do what you want. :)
Me and my friend has always thought the Texas Chainsaw remake was amazing! I think it's so good I'd put it up there with the original. great cast, great acting, excellent directing and locations. It is so underrated.
Watched this all the way through thinking that The Thing was bound to be number one. Disappointed to see it at number 2 until I saw your number one pick! Perfect!
I completely agree with the grudge I watch horror movies all the time and I’m hardly ever scared by the but the grudge was actually very unnerving and got me pretty paranoid which is why I love it so much
I alwys thought that in the original night of the living dead, Barbara was supossed to be in shock or something, never saw it as a stereotype, myself. But the remake certainly kicks ass.
I'm shocked, but happy, to hear you actually liked the 2007 Halloween remake. I wasn't expecting it on the list at all. The original is one of my favorite movies of all time, but I thought the later sequels after 4 were awful. Like you said, at least the remake made Michael badass again and less of joke.
I'd like to see a crossover between the Thing and the Blob. Both are gruesome body mass aliens that absorb their victims. The only difference is The Thing can take the form of something after eating it, while The Blob just eats its victims only to grow bigger and more powerful. That would be an interesting fight
Are you kidding? It's awful. It's trying to be a more faithful book adaptation, but completely ruins the original characters, making them unlikable, Mina is the worst case. The whole movie is trying too hard to be hip with sex scenes, swearing and the whole "grim and edgy" approach. Oh, and Keeanu Reeves acts like a tree, and he is the lead!
Bravo.. i agree wholeheartedly..especially the 3 Hammer classics.. Lee is mesmerizingly scary..Cushing is splendidly chrushing..and the Texas Chainsaw remake and the R Lee Emmy character really gives me the creeps.
"BANG"; HAMMER! Excellent choice for the number 1 slot. My two personal favorite Hammer films were "Curse Of Frankenstein" and "Curse Of The Werewolf". "BANG"!🤪
"Who Goes There?" is a fucking great story; I reread it every few years. As such, _The Thing_ demolishes _The Thing From Another World_ for me, though some things still make me laugh in the former (like how it doesn't even bother trying to explain why a research station in the Antarctic would be armed to the teeth with flamethrowers). Still, that's gotta be one of the best horror remakes. With The Fly, the original was pretty clearly the better movie and is the one to see, but the remake had better body horror and (obviously) better special effects.
Sam Raimi himself said that Evil Dead 2 is a Re-Imagining of The Evil Dead, Raimi had a bigger budget which enabled him to make Evil Dead the way he Originally wanted to but couldn't afford. Evil Dead (2013) was more of a Remake.
I certainly agree about The Thing & The Blob, light years away from the dated originals. Steve McQueen always seemed far to ancient as a student in the original, & surprised you think it was the superior movie.
I know this video is 5 years old, but that doesn't really make a difference for what I'm about to say, as I feel a strong sense of disappointment that Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) is nowhere to be seen. Seriously, Halloween could have been kept off this list entirely if that had been placed on the list. For me I would put it either between House of Wax (1953) and John Carpenter's The Thing or above Carpenter's The Thing.
The only movies that ever really scared me, are 'The Exorcist' and 'Dawn of the Dead' from 2004. I also have a special place in my heart for the 1990 'Night of the Living Dead' as well.
The Grudge was one of my favorite horror movies, I was addicted to watching it as it scared me like no other horror movie did. I don’t know what it is about it that is so effective
I feel like I have to do a small fist bump everytime I hear Cushing and Lee's names haha. Now for my two cents. I think The Blob '88 doesn't get enough credit. I mean we can agree it's a solid horror film but there's a little more going on than the effects. The script for instance feels sorta ahead of it's time, doing things like killing off established characters early on and poking fun at the genre itself. Credit to Frank Darabont on that one. And Hammer's The Mummy... more solid than diamonds, I just love it so much!
I love the list, never knew that The Thing was a remake I LOVE Rob Zombie, listened to his music throughout high school and watched his movies numerous times. Even I can say, the Ring is a superior film to Halloween.
So glad that John Carpenters The Thing makes the top 3. It is probably my fave movie of all time. Considering what goes into number 1, while I agree, I'm gonna bump up The Thing by one slot as the highest individual entry :)
After seeing this video i had to give the 2007 Halloween a look and im suprised to say that despite it being less than flawless, i actually enjoyed it. Ive never seen any of the other Halloween movies before and this might be a reason for me to go back and watch the older films :).
The Thing will never leave my brain, that was some true horror
You have The Thing in your brain? *grabs flamethrower
@@HyunaTheHyena 😎
You really nailed it with the number one spot, James.
Bam! Hammer!
I hard hitting review!
Yes, Kurt Russell is always badass
Thats right!
Kurt Russell lives in my heart man plus it looks like he hasn't aged at all lol
He was apparently offered the role of big boss in metal gear solid 3 and ended up turning it down for an unstated reason.
Really makes you wonder what could have been if he was the voice for a character based on Snake Plissken in a roundabout way.

He remind me of Snake in Escape from New York. With the eyepatch and the voice and the general badassness.
Seeing the old man struggling to get the blob off of his hand genuinely scared me as a kid. The way he so genuinely is terrified that he can't get it off hit me deeper than any jumpscare because of how real he sounded.

Yes, I love 80s movies way better because they never use CGI, making things look way more realistic
The 2011 version starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead?
Throw the blood in the sharks' water and see what happens. :]
Spottedfeather - it is indeed a remake, and it is indeed a horror movie.
Hammer time baby!! Can't beat Cushing!!
Not to mention Christopher Lee, Terence Fisher, and Veronica Carlson.
Right on, Stryder HD! I can't get enough of Hammer, especially Peter Cushing!

I knew with certainty that The Thing from '82 would be there. It's such a masterpiece in both storytelling and visual effects.
But... Where is 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' from 1978?
Jack Robinson That remake sucks The movie is not as good as the original and the alien dog looks stupid.
no the 1956 version is the best.
Hi James, if you were to re release this list, would Stephen Kings IT (2017) be on the list and if so where about in the list? Would love to know
Bravo.. i agree wholeheartedly..especially the 3 Hammer classics.. Lee is mesmerizingly scary..Cushing is splendidly chrushing..and the Texas Chainsaw remake and the R Lee Emmy character really gives me the creeps.
"BANG"; HAMMER! Excellent choice for the number 1 slot.
My two personal favorite Hammer films were "Curse Of Frankenstein"
and "Curse Of The Werewolf".
I wondered what would top The Thing but the Hammer Films were a good choice. Curse of the Werewolf was another good remake by them.
Great list, I'm surprised Evil Dead wasn't on this list. Yes, Sam Raimi did both but, damn, the remake is truly scary and horrific in every aspect
I certainly agree about The Thing & The Blob, light years away from the dated originals. Steve McQueen always seemed far to ancient as a student in the original, & surprised you think it was the superior movie.
Man, now I’m thinking of R. Lee Ermy’s character in FMJ screaming at leatherface, ordering him around, and scaring the shit out of him.
Great list, I second everything said here including the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake being pretty great.
My Mom actually got to meet R. Lee Ermey in person, as well as take a picture with him. Very nice guy, I’m told.
I love the list, never knew that The Thing was a remake
I LOVE Rob Zombie, listened to his music throughout high school and watched his movies numerous times. Even I can say, the Ring is a superior film to Halloween.
My favourite horror movie of all time - Scanners.
The Grudge scarred me for life. What a great movie :)
Great call on Hammer as #1. I fully agree.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) is definitely on my list. It would be number 2 for me and The Thing would be number 1.
So glad that John Carpenters The Thing makes the top 3. It is probably my fave movie of all time.
Considering what goes into number 1, while I agree, I'm gonna bump up The Thing by one slot as the highest individual entry :)
i actually like halloween 2007 it was amazing
if this list was done in the opposite direction, i imagine the Disney Live Action movies would DOMINATE the list
After seeing this video i had to give the 2007 Halloween a look and im suprised to say that despite it being less than flawless, i actually enjoyed it. Ive never seen any of the other Halloween movies before and this might be a reason for me to go back and watch the older films :).
I also really liked the prequel to The Thing. I often watch them in chronological order.
@MrClassiccarenthusia yeah that was a major feck up
