RARE Maserati GranTurismo MC! DIY Brake Pad CHange **SAVING $7000**

- Опубликовано: 3 сен 2019
- Richard's Maserati MC needed some new brake pads. Instead of spending THOUSANDS of dollars having a dealership perform the service, we DIY change out the pads and save a ton of money! The brake pads are pretty simple to change out and it should take only a few hours.

Thank you guys so much for this wonderful video. Please keep those coming for Granturismo.
Love the GranTurismo, MC even more. I can see one of those in my future!
Hell yeah
I blew all the money I saved on ascots. Thanks again Daniel for helping me!
Haha. Well they looked nice.
Excellent video, and it was great to see Richard again...... $3,000-$5,000 for brakes is absolutely disgusting. You guys are smart doing the DIY projects😁😁😁
Thanks! I agree, it was pretty simple work to save a good chunk of change.
Nice works guys... just missed one thing, a startup of the MC! That's the best part!
Yeah, I totally forgot.
"you got a full millimeter"....Thats what she said.........HAHAHAHA!!!
Lol
please film more different Maserati GranTurismo works. even the same job by different people. this is very satisfying.
Ahh a nice Maserati... I swear i heard you saying Grand Chourizo MC hahahaha
Hmm, the tastier and slightly spicy version.
Yes. Me too lol
Your friends are so cool. Love the Masi.
Thanks!
That is so funny ! I have a 2012 GT MC black with Black and Red stitching... I bought it in NOV of 18 as the 3rd owner always Tx car, and had 23K on it..I drive it daily and now it has 38k on it. I added after market wheels, an all carbon hood and X pipe from Urutu...next to remove the CATs!!!! it is a blast to drive! Thanks for the Rati content!!!
Nice!
Another great video. Very inspiring to those of us that interested in exotics and also enjoy hands-on automotive enthusiasm. Bravo.
Thanks! :)
One of the best sounding cars. Looked for one awhile back but none were out there. Great car.
Yeah they sound incredible
Great stuff, as always!
Thanks
Great job , Wow the lug's were on there tight ! I want to paint my brake caliper Red , they are a flat grey now . I'm going to look into doing this. !
I encourage this plan
Yep, great vid Dan, very nice Maserati, your friend has some very nice cars in his garage.👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
I agree
Thank you so much for this video
I love you guys!! keep up the good work and thanks!!
You're welcome
After watching these I definitely think I’m going to buy one this year looks like a fairly cheap exotic to maintain
Yup!
Your videos are all so great and so detailed. Thank you so much. I own a 2013 GranCabrio Sport and any and all wrenching videos are welcome. Please please please!
Thank you
It's a Granturismo MC, not MC Stradale. The MC Stradale was never sold in the US and came with the F1 gearbox from the Scuderia (60ms shifts), carbon ceramic brakes, carbon fiber bucket seats from the MC12 supercar and no rear seats (although that was available in later years).
Oops
Nice DIY vids!
Thanks!
A binary switch, lol.... Dan, you definitely are a programmer! :)
Lol yup. Forever nerd.
Hi Daniel. Great Maserati video. I never knew the brake job was so easy. I just got a 2009 granturismo S with the F1 transmission. Its such a joy to drive these gems. I'm sure you already mentioned this somewhere in description below, but I couldn't find any parts for my model year on ricambia. Would you be able to recommend another source? Thanks again & please make more Maserati videos
Ricambi should have parts for your car...
Very informative video
Thank you
Awesome video.
Thanks!
Thanks Dan....alway like your video's
You're welcome. Thank you for watching them. :)
Was away on vacation...time to catch up on the Normal Guy Supercar vids. Funny enough...was in a place called Prince Edward Island in the North Atlantic Canada getting some sun and white sandy beaches...I actually spoke to a guy from Texas who was doing a tour of the east coast and was suggested by friends to go to PEI and was shocked how warm it was there and that one could swim in the North Atlantic...anyways...was cool to find someone there from as far south as Texas...and back to the show!
Lots of good stuff to catch up on...
My only other comment would be that I would have taken the opportunity to clean everything up. great video. Removes the mystery. Thanks!
True
Awesome vid
Thanks
Thanks for the video- Question: talked with a Maserati mechanic about brake replacement, and he said that you need a computer to disable the brakes in order to change them. Is that true? Didn't look like you guys hooked anything up computer/software to the brakes before you changed them.
When I've changed my brake pads i grease the pins and pads with copper slip
That's a good idea
I do too, but I hear that you don’t need grease on the back of the pads, just the edges..
I also like to put in new pins and spring. Delco sells them for $20, but some of the brake pad manufacturers supply them with the pads. Also need a new wear sensor.
i do the same for pins, next time will be easy to take off
Hi, I wan't to fit quattroporte's front breaks into my alfa romeo 159. I've found out that used calipers are "cheap". My question is what "measure" I should l look after in order to know if they will fit the Alfa. Thanks, great videos man, inspiring :)
the spring plate is for noise, it keeps the pads from rattling when the brakes are not applied. The brakes would function just fine with out it.
Ahh good to know.
I enjoyed this video as I do with all of them, but it was painful to watch 😫 but still entertaining 😀
Nice job! Too bad the cocktails weren’t flowing....Slight correction on the wheel mounting pilot pins. Ricambi Part# is WMT-01 (for Ferrari/Maserati)... not vmt-01, best to see an eye doc lol (btw we’re the same age)
I love disc brakes, repair wise. I can get my grand am done in an hour or less. Drums are a pain in the butt!!!!
Yes drums suck.
Brembo also makes a Mono block caliper that is more rigid it doesn’t have a bridge pin , so your required to remove the caliper to change the pads
Love all you're videos, I was wondering if the process is the same for a 08 quattroporte gts?
I'm not sure but possibly
To answer the question as to what pulls the brake pads away from the rotor it’s actually a squared ring around the caliper pistons that after the caliper compresses the pads the energy put into the rubber ring from the outward movement then pulls the piston back which is just enough to release the friction on the pads and rotors to not cause drag
Ask and the internet will answer
Where did you buy the brake pads looking for some for my SQ4?
I have a Maserati Ghibli SQ4 with the same brakes, I compress the calipers before taking the old pads out. If you are replacing the the pads, then damaging the old pads compressing the calipers is ok.
Yeah that's a good move
Where can you buy these rotors? I found EBC pads but no Rotors.
Nice, hope you've got an xpipe on that bad boy!
Not yet.
@@normalguysupercar I have the same model MC, recommend Urutu xpipe and carbon fiber sound chamber. Meatier growl 🦁👍
Great stuff! Have you also changed the rotors? Guess it is just a case of removing the caliper and then the rotor. Any special tools needed?
Shouldn't need anything special to replace the rotors
Maserati tax.
I experienced this with just a lowly corvette.
For example, generic items like a radiator steam cleaning (where i pulled the radiator) the price can wildly vary vs if i tell them that it's an S10 radiator...
Yeah certain things they like to mark up for no apparent reason
Hi guys quick question my 2011 mc gran turism stopped shifting a light came on in the rpm cluster it was a triangular with a circle around it Also a wrench with a shock emoji Also says tpms malfunction
Dan thanks again for doing a vid on the Maz. I have an MC as well. It won't be long and I'll need to do this too. You da man! Keep up the good work. Question - Did you already do a rotor change video? I seem to recall you did, but I can't find it. I'm sure the rotor on the Ferrari would be about the same procedure to replace right?
I haven't changed a rotor on the Ferrari or Maserati. Only video with rotor change was a Porsche. But it's a pretty simple task.
@@normalguysupercar Dan I really appreciate that you always answer people's posts. You wouldn't happen to know if that stopped his squealing brakes did it? Mine squeal too.
@@TeFLoNMD11 I think he said they squeal much less now
@@TeFLoNMD11 I have same car . I used ebc yellow pads. No more squeling but brake performance reduced little bit. It would be perfect if they talked about performance too.
good work , you shod add brake pad part number
Thanks for the video, I have been doing brakes on all my vehicles and motorcycles for the last 30 plus years. When I did my Maserati Granturismo I saw nothing unusual or particularly special. I liked your video as well, I actually have a video of my own in my channel. Good job guys.
Thanks!
Great video but my ocd wanted you to clean the wheels and the brake calipers though😊
Lol
Brembo calipers are definitely easy to work with, unless you live in the North East and those 2 pins are seized in place. I am doing the same job on my c63 amg at the moment. 6 piston front and 4 piston rears. I was quoted almost 4k at the dealership for new rotors and pads all around lol I am about 500 dollars in parts and about a 12 pack dealing with those pins. Nice video!
Oh yeah way cheaper! I can imagine the winter reeks havoc on those pins
@@normalguysupercar Haha yeah I am sure you feel my pain since you're from Michigan.
@@normalguysupercar And thanks for always interacting with the fan's don't forget about us when you hit those big numbers. Been following since the f430 first oil change.
@@k2crasher no problem. 😁
Great video 👍
Any issue with manually pushing the plungers back, or the with the electronic handbrake 🤷🏻♂️ I’m assuming this was done without the software to put the car into brake calibration mode
No problems
Normal Guy Supercar 😁👍
@@firstnamesecondname5341 this car uses an internal little drum brake inside the rotor for the parking brake. Kind of an older style, but works well, and easier to manufacture with those huge calipers.
Nice!!
Thanks!
What are the brake pad part#s? Thanks
Random question, would you consider singing the intro song with helium voice?
Haha yes
From now on Richard needs to wear his red velvet sport coat and ascot when working on cars. And don't forget the cocktail in hand.
Lol agreed
Time for a beer assistant
I like this concept
You need to clean the pins so the pads can slide easy. You put them back dirty lol
Ok
This is something I thought too. Heck I just buy a spring / pin kit when I do my GSXR1000, granted being on 2 wheels would suck harder with a bind up. Haha
I was thinking the same thing, johnsn10. A safe degreaser first to clean up those gorgeous calipers. Then hit the pins with some WD40 and a green scotch brite. Simple way to make installing the pins much easier. Same thing I do on all my pin style moto calipers.
When is the mc due for a clutch change? I'll be so interested in manufacture invoice vs diy cost and procedure! :D
Actually that has an automatic transmission...
@@normalguysupercar is that really? I thought the mc had the f1 style transmission where a hydraulic system controls the manual gearbox shifts. I also thought non mc models had German planetary gearboxes. Well, it could be my concept error, I don't own the car but interested for knowledge.
It's automatic. The older Grand Sports had the F1 Tranny that required a clutch change every 18K miles, although they also sell a kit that when installed it will increase the clutch life.
The GranTurismo has not really an automatic transmission. It is more like an electro hydraulic actuated manual transmission. maybe the MC is different...I do have the Sport version ✌🏻
Should not turn modern car rotors and you won't be able to with slots and vent holes in rotor. The cutting bit will unload in the lathe. Replacing steel rotors with pads on performance cars is recommended.
Where can i buy this ?
than'k you
You're welcome!
Question: which mode BendPak is that? I’m about to pull the trigger on the HD-9.
Yep she's an HD-9. Make sure you get the scissor lift option for maximum bad-assness
@Richard Lee, thanks! I actually already have the QuickJacks, and I’ve seen other who have run the QuickJacks right on top of the runways! It does seem mildly sketchy, but I think I’ll have to give it a try! With the wife’s car first, just in case it goes sour 🤣
Also, I see that you still have the steel ramps on there. Any problems getting the 458 up there? Or do you have to use any additional aids to get up onto the lift?
Brake cleaner. Have you heard of it?
Nope
The metal clip on top of the pads stops the pads rattling:)
Yeah they also act as a spring
How to replace a 2008 maserati granturismo Radiator hose top and bottom. ?
No idea
My friend owned an MC Stradale. We traded cars for the afternoon. Not sure if you have driven your friend's, but it's definitely not a canyon carver and all GT. I took my first curve thinking i was in my GT3 and it was a hot mess. No way would it do well on track, lol. And it's very easy to bump the gas pedal while braking due to the proximity of the pedals. Cool car though and glad i got to drive it.
I've driven one... It's a touring car for sure... Not so good on the track
I have to agree. It'd end up in a wall at the track. But its got great Italian looks, sounds f'ing amazing, very comfortable ride and a 1980's looking infotainment center that could launch an ICBM. My perfect daily driver :)
@@richardlee7595 ha ha! Love the ICBM comment!
Please start cleaning your brakes and lubricating. Watch South main Auto do a brake job. He is the best technician I have ever seen. He does fantastic very clean professional brake jobs. Clean and lubricate.
Does part of the cost equation have to do with them replacing the brake rotors?
Good to know
Was there any brake warnings on the dash after this? Tempted to give it a go.
Nope. But the brake wear sensors had not been tripped yet. If they were we would have needed to replace those as well.
@@normalguysupercar Thanks forgive me for being a novice at DIY but I suspect that the sensor would become tripped if the pad is worn low enough to make contact with the surface of the sensor?
@@Christopher-pb7kn correct, but Richard's pads were not totally worn down yet
Im surprised you gentlemen didn't clean up the calipers and do a more thorough inspection.
It's just going to get dirty again
Did you use ceramic brake pads or carbon Kevlar? And where did you buy them?
I'm not sure
Normal Guy Supercar ....darn. :( I just bought a Maserati GT and saw your video, I was hoping to find out what you used and where.
When did you actually film this? Richard is dressed like it's November!
Much earlier in the year. Was sitting on it for a while
Are Ya' l in Atlanta,Think I May Know Rick,If He's From ATL.
@@edcain3676 no, Austin
im showing this to anyone who wants to overcharge me for a break job on a maserati when i get mine xD
Ha!
I’ve personally heard it costs around seven FREAKING thousand dollars for a GranTurismo brake job!!! That’s insane
I could see a full brake job in that price point at a dealership
Depends on the inverse of the iq of the owner. And if it was a rotor replacement for an actual stradale it's the cost of the carbon ceramic rotors that cost a lot. He probably told them it was a stradale (which it is not) hence the price. Also they did not change the rotors in this video only pads, which are easy and not that expensive. www.ebay.com/itm/MASERATI-GRANTURISMO-MC-STRADALE-BRAKE-DISC-CARBON-CERAMIC-ROTOR-272385-/400791901861
David Johansson yeah a full brake job but just the pads
Dealer quote on my Ghibli SQ4 (same brake calipers as car in the video) was 5K plus for pads and rotors. Did them myself for under $800.00 in parts including .5 liter of Pentosin brake fluid. OEM front rotors (paid 400 for the pair with shipping), aftermarket rear and Brembo ceramic pads. Pads are for Lexus IS-F (same calipers) and Rockauto had them for $65.00! Lexus dealer price for these pads was 225.00.
cmlf1 oh shit man wow. How’s the car had reliability issues for you?
That’s such a nice car!! Who tightened those bolts last? Lol
No idea but they put a lot of ugga-duggas on it
Haha yeah man
Have you thought about wrapping your car? If so what color would you go?
@@JuanHernandez-tn8de Na I love the red. I know, I'm boring
Na man your car looks great in the red
I like all of the black that you’re adding to it it makes it look more aggressive
I have a srt challenger and the dealership wanted 1300 dollars to just change pads and bleed system! I actually purchased the front and rear pads from brembo themselves and it was around a 100 dollars and replaced them myself. I couldn't believe how easy it was! I honestly dont understand how regular disk pads on a normal car is actually harder than brembo!
Brembo has a really great design that is quite quick compared to many of the other manufacturers.
I’d say brembos are easier than any single piston caliper on any car, just clean the pins and remove the crud where your pads fit
Guys, i scrolled down at all the reviews, questions but could not see what PART No. used for Froint and REAR. They were both EBC bur for clarity can you give me the PART Numbers please…. Forgive me if its mentioned elsewhere, I di d look.

john
Richard would have to chime in as I don't know it
@@normalguysupercar yes, that would be great if he could
A little brake cleaner and brake grease on the pad edges is a good idea next time.
True

No cold start?? :-)
Yeah, I forgot.

I don't think he's fixed the chip yet. Clearly he's not very ocd. Lol
Seriously you didn't change the brakes on the Mini right, what makes us think this will be right 😀
Well it will never be right according to the internet experts so Meh...
Yeah, what was i thinking?
You are comparing a complete brake job to just slapping pads on used rotors. Just out of curiosity does Josh wash these videos?

Nice!
Silicon paste on the pins when putting back..,
