Wheel of prog might be my favorite show of the whole RUclips. Great job guys !
That's amazing. Thanks!!!
Can we quote you?
Sure !
Wow, no love for Trespass?
That's what I thought too. I can't believe they think Abacab and Invisible Touch are better! To me there isn't one song in those two albums as good as Looking For Someone, Stagnation or The Knife. But well, everybody listens to music differently I guess.
Trespass for me is top 3.
Stagnation is great@@polarcesar
I feel you.
Right?
The Knife, Looking for Someone..I mean come on.
Moving nursery cryme to the top tier was absolutely the move that was needed. More love to and then there were three is needed!
I’m with Nick. Wind & Wuthering is A Tier.
I put it in S with Trick of the Tail and Foxtrot. A: The Lamb, Nursery Cryme, Selling England by the Pound. I could put The Lamb in S on some days.
Trespass was robbed 😅
"Selling England by the Pound", "Foxtrot" and "A Trick of the Tail" are my "S" tier albums.
Mine as well.
Jerry saved the day at the last minute! Great episode as always
Been dying for another Wheel of Prog!!! Excited to watch!
Fantastic, I've been waiting for this.. I hope it's very long and full of detail
I love The Wheel Of Prog!!!
I would love to see Wheel of Prog with Magma, Gong and Eloy!
'Sheets of double glazing' is not on the Genesis self-titled album. It's from Domino on Invisible Touch. And 'self titled' originally given an A with the superb Trespass a D and considered ahead of the brilliant Nursery Cryme. I know music is all about opinions, but I'm absolutely AMAZED at these particular rankings. And Trespass ended up ranked the same as We Can't Dance? Wow!
Ah indeed. You’re right about the double glazing lyric! It is Domino. My bad!
yes Domino is on my top 10 Genesis songs!
Love the discussion - really good stuff. Thanks for sharing this!
Awesome again! This is such a cool format, love watching this, and looking forward to the next one.
Genesis is so hard to rank imo, but this turned out nice.
Thank you very much guys, for making this one ❤
What's mindblowing is that the 4 prog masterpieces came back to back to back to back years. Incredible.
Fantastic episode! Absolutely love this series. I’ve started holding off on watching new episodes of WOP just so I can go back through each bands catalog and compare my own list to the ones you guys land on. So fun and keep ‘em coming! 👍
Thanks!!
I've been a Genesis fan since 1972 and the only word that fits your ranking is bollocks
I figure they are more receptive to the later stuff because that's where they were introduced. For those of us who started at the beginning, many of those later ones were like an abomination.
The differing opinions are what makes this concept fun. From chatting after I know we all went in with different individual preferences and came out with a compromise of sorts. But I’ve no expectation that anyone will watch this and completely agree with the final ranking.
@@marciajeffredo1291I did first hear Genesis in the 1980s when I was 10 years old or so. Trespass was actually one of the first Genesis album that I heard beyond the radio singles of the early 80s, and it was a shock to me because it wasn’t what I expected. I suppose I’ve never really shook that off! But that’s how opinions and preferences are formed.
S-Selling England, Nursery Cryme, Lamb
A-Foxtrot, Trick of the Tail, Trespass
Selling, Foxtrot, Trick. Swap Trick and Cryme and I'd say it's perfect
Totally agree.
Another fun episode! It's almost like i would have placed it. Here is my ranking:
S: Selling England, Foxtrot, Nursery Cryme
A: Lamb, Trick, Wind
B: Duke, Abacab, Trespass
C: Genesis, Invisible Touch, Calling
D: ... And Then, We Can't Dance, From Genesis
Good show and a pretty good list! Anyway, here's mine:
S: Selling, Foxtrot, Nursery Cryme
A: Trick, W&W, Lamb
B: Duke, ATTWT, Invisible Touch
C: Trespass, Genesis, Abacab,
D: Calling, We Can't Dance, FGTR
very entertaining and fun and nice to get to know all you guys better. Genesis forever!
One of the single greatest videos on youtube. thoroughly enjoyed this. Tier S nailed it!!
Great show - agree with most of the rankings. More Wheel shows please!
Good job guys! Im excited for the King Crimson episode!☝️
Really cool show, great to have Jerry on, and great inside info on the Sum of the Parts doc... I couldn't believe how much was glossed over, let alone Hackett almost not being in it at all.
Yeah that was interesting to find out!
Jerry with the buzzer-beater! Saves the day by putting Nursery Cryme up where it belongs. Life is good again.
Such a good series - Wheel of Prog. I’m glad Genesis made its way to one. This didn’t end up quite like I thought, but pretty darn close. Nice discussions.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Can't wait for the Marillion episode. I'm sure your list would be different than my list.
I agreed with Jerry’s final move for sure. Nursery crime is S tier IMO. Musical Box is the song that got me into Genesis. Trespass definitely needs to be higher!
Can't wait for the Marillion episode!!
same!
Fugazi in S tier !!!!!
@@lucasjohnston8676 it'll be interesting to see where it gets put. I've said my peace regarding Fugazi many times on my channel and in my blog over the years.
I know many who worship it, but me?..it's always been the Fish-Marillion album I've struggled with the most. It comes across way more about Fish writing poetic tales than any other of the albums with him.
Great show! It hurt me but I always love your discussions. I’m sitting there talking right with you. 😂
I thought I heard voices
As someone who listened to Genesis since 1973 it is easy. All the Hackett albums on top two lines then the rest. Once he left they were never the same. Top 3 are definite...Nursery Cryme is S 100%. Fountain of Salmacis is epic. I'd just swap Wind and Wuthering for Duke. Criminal to put Trespass at the bottom.
Another fantastic Wheel Of Prog show guys. Really great to have the legend Jerry Ewing on as well. I would love to know where Geoff got the magazine file from
S: Lamb / Selling / Foxtrot
A: Trick / Wind / Nursery
B: Three / Trespass / Duke
Final S Tier was same as mine, so great job!
Jerry is the man! Awesome finishing move bringing my faves to S-tier 🎉
Ooh, there are some disagreements I have. Most are small, just moving something up or down a tier. And you don't HAVE to have exactly three albums each tier.
Small quibble: what song on Invisible Touch would you prefer over Down And Out, Burning Rope, Lady Lies, Motherlode? So I think those albums should swap. I'd also swap ATOTT with Nursery Cryme, and Duke with W&W.
But I don't get why Trespass is so LOW. It was such a HUGE leap from the debut, perhaps the biggest in style and musical ability. Trespass and Nursery Cryme are much closer stylistically, so I wouldn't place Trespass any more than one or two levels from Nursery Cryme.
On our show you do have to have 3 albums in each tier. That’s the whole point
Best episode yet!
Marillion next please 🙏🏼
Awesome vid. Can't wait for Pink Floyd!
I think this is the first time that I completely agree with you guys.😃❤
Jerry did good. Nursery Cryme is my top Genesis album of them all.
If I was playing a solitary version of this game, my choices would be similar with a couple of exceptions:
S - Selling England by the Pound, Foxtrot, Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
A - Nursery Cryme, A Trick of the Tail, Wind and Wuthering
B - Duke, Trespass, Genesis
C - Abacab, And Then There Were Three, Invisible Touch
D- We Can't Dance, Calling All Stations, From Genesis to Revelation
Lamb was the first Genesis album I heard. I got it as a Christmas gift since it was my oldest sister's boyfriend's favorite album (he was 9 years older than me). I was 13 and it was so different than the music I knew at the time. I played it three times back to back with headphones on during the night. I was hooked. Gabriel was long gone, but that was the Genesis I knew the best. It was also the gateway for me to get into crazier music like punk. I also want to give some love to Trespass - so pastoral and beautiful. If I wasn't limited to three albums per tier (using your rules), I would probably have 5 at S with Wind and Wuthering at A.
Love this channel - first time seeing! Looking forward to seeing more videos!
This is always a fun concept. No two Genesis fans would come up with an identical ranking. My first exposure to Genesis was Nursery Crime. But after all these years, the album I'm most likely to listen to is Duke, and after several listens to "Calling" I still don't like any songs on it. It's hard to use this format, because Calling doesn't deserve a D - it should be an F. So my rankings would be:
S - Duke, Nursery Crime, Foxtrot
A - The Lamb,, Selling England, Trick
B - Wind, And then there were 3, Genesis
C - Trespass, We Can't Dance, Invisible
D - Calling All Stations, Genesis to Rev, Trespass,
Best show on RUclips please keep the rock coming
Thanks!!!
My fav is tott I just always listen from start t finish I've always loved it 2.duke .3 selling england I know my choices/ positions are a bit left field but that's yhe fun of it
You guys should cover coheed and cambria, claudio is one of the most underrated melody writers and they are my favorite band of all time
You ended up pretty close to my rankings; I might move Trick up and Chryme down; Wind up and Duke down. (I came on board when Genesis Live came out, and I've always been biased against the latter, poppier albums, but you all make me want to give them a fresh listen.)
Abacab can't be better than Trespass and Calling neather and so for all the poppy stuffs from Duke onwards, no way.
S:Duke, Wind, Selling
A:Trick, Foxtrot, Lamb
B:Nursery, Invisible, Abacab
C:We Can't, Genesis, Trespass
D.Calling, And Then, From Genesis
Would love to see the Wheel of Prog visit the Jethro Tull discography.
Yes, this!
The older ones are the best
Such an enjoyable show. The Wheel does not lie, though on this occasion...
I'd be down to see y'all do one of these for The Tangent
Great program. Interesting how "late" most of you became aware of Genesis and hold the Gabriel era in such high regard. I think that speaks volumes in itself. For myself, I find the format restrictive in one sense. My S Tier albums, in order, are Duke, Lamb & Trick. However, nothing on those albums reaches the emotion and creativity of Musical Box and Supper's Ready. Perhaps a song ranking would be and interesting idea. Really enjoyed your comments.
Some position swaps: WaW with Duke, ATTWT with IT, Trespass with G, and WCD with CAS. Everyone’s so different in their tastes, and I also think where we were in our lives at the time of first experiencing these albums influences our rankings a bit.
Top 3 Genesis Albums, Selling England, Foxtrot, The Lamb
Selling England, Foxtrot, Trick, I'd say. The first half of Lamb is brilliant but the 2nd half sort of drones on a bit.
I agree absolutely. The Lamb is my fave. I love ALL four sides.
Correct move at the end! For fans who witnessed live Genesis since 72 (and before for some) and never had issues with Phil’s lead singing none of Genesis creations after Wind can overtake the previous albums.
Somehow something disappeared in creativity and emotion once Pete and Steve were gone.
These shows can be a bit like visiting the dentist for me! Happiest when it is over! How in God's name "Trespass" isn't in B is beyond understanding. Invisible Touch better than ABACAB and ATTWT??!? Please shoot me now!
😂
Would Love to see wheel of Marillion 🙌🏻
"Nursery Cryme", "Foxtrot" and "Selling England…" are the top 3 for me. And "Trespass" is so much better than all the albums after Hackett left.
First time I see this show, very amusing concept. Would like to see an episode of VdGG.
Anxiously waiting for Marillion.
You guys have a more balanced view on their entire career than a Gabriel-era snob like me. And I can appreciate that. I think its a considered and knowledgeable list. Thanks for moving The Lamb up to S-Tier Geoff even though it was only short-lived. To be honest, Selling England, Foxtrot, Nursery Cryme and The Lamb should all be S-Tier. Cheers.
I have always been a defender of 'Calling all Stations'. I really like that album, there are some excellent songs like the title track. And since the pandemic, when I hear the song 'Not About Us,' I think about all of the healthcare workers.
Brilliant episode. Very entertaining. I largely agree with the outcome except that I would have rated '...Three' a little higher.
so glad nursery crime ended up on top! do king crimson next!
Good list at the end like the top 3 but I'd swap Duke with Wind, Invisible with And Then also Calling with Trespass
Surprising no mention of burning rope in then there were three, epic song
Selling England by the pound is probably in my top 3 albums of all time. They have a pretty solid discography with some weak points at the beginning and end but there are plenty of albums scattered across I love like duke, lamb lies down, invisible touch, and foxtrot
Jerry with the Wild Card was the best part! Made up for some asinine spots others made.
👍🏻
41:36 Is "From Genesis to Revelation" really coming out remastered this year?
I got a 2 cd deluxe version and I love that album!
@@mechanicalanimal125 Yeah, me too. But I was wondering if there will be another remastered edition coming out this year.
I played Seconds Out to death back in 79-81, I still haven't found a better live album.
Loved this episode. Trespass is A tier for me, but I forgive you all 😂
Everything else seems pretty good 💛
Trespass D?..I like Geoff, but, man... Trespass is an easy A - Tier for me.
The rest of the rankings are fine for the most part. I would put Duke ahead of Trick by just a bit.
Very much looking forward to the Wheel of Prog: Marillion-edition (they are my favorite band, of nearly 29 years).
What can I say … I think Trespass is a great step in the musical journey but for me it’s the weakest of the Gabriel era
And then he puts Invisible Touch in B when that album and We Can’t Dance are the only albums that should be in D
Thank you so much to Jerry for saving this by moving Nursery Cryme to its proper tier
Geoff, you should’ve mentioned how awesome all these releases are in multichannel music
True
For live albums, Seconds Out hands down.
Great episode. It was almost perfect and then Jerry screwed it all up at the end!
I also take the position that if We Can't Dance had been a 45-minute album it could have been the finest of the trio era, but it's brought down by a lot of filler. No Son of Mine, Driving the Last Spike, Dreaming While You Sleep, and Fading Lights are all fantastic, classic Genesis, and I enjoy Jesus He Knows Me and I Can't Dance just fine - if that was the album, it'd be A or S tier.
Hey Guys. I'm writing from Poznan, Poland, where Ray Wilson lives a happy life. I love your show ofcourse, but I was wondering, what actually S or D or whatever tier really means. Is S tier in Genesis chart equivalent with that in Rush chart. Maybe You should consider something like a battle o bands Wheel. Giving that You done Metallica its not only prog that you are into. I know one band that is rocky and proggy and poppy even (but no more than Genesis) its called Queen and i hope to see Queen tier list sometime.
Good Job lads. Don't get the reaction to ATTW3 (not just you). It hooked me into the band and I bought Duke then Abacab. I detected an unwelcome change with Abacab, so my interest then went backwards all the way to Trespass. Phil WAS brilliant as was PG, but when they became Phil's backing group that was it for me.
Wow. I've got different ears fo sho. I was hoping for a little more commentary about why they liked certain songs. But lamb should be s . they pushed themselves thru failure and success and stakes seemed so high. Tony and Phils playing were stellar. Anyway fun watch!
Calling all stations was so bad that Mike should have made Tony Banks the new keyboardist 4 Mike and the mechanics
Invisible touch was the commercial success because it was in the middle of Phil Mania let's not forget about the lead up to this album where Phil was on two Robert Plant albums, the song Easy Lover was a huge hit then no jacket required came out and do you have the appearance on Miami Vice as well as the extensive amount of exposure he got with the Live Aid set of concerts
I'd put trespass in c. Stations to d. And trick to s. To have in s both eras.
Selling England ranks S. Perfect! "More fool me" is the song I wished it wouldn't have appeared on that album.
I can already tell before even watching that Duke is going to be underrated. It might be in S. It would still be underrated.
All very subjective of course. Even though I prefer the Gabriel era I think A Trick Of The Tail was really their best record. A strange paradox indeed, To produce an album of that quality after Peter's departure was amazing.
Guys, have a listen to Trespass again, please ... you might want to move it up to tier A then ... as I would.
Abacab in C is criminally low
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh the last wild card move! I would've moved NC to A and Duke down to B, then its perfect. Admittedly I do heavily prefer the Gabriel and Hackett era.
Coming back and watching this again, I don't hate the last wildcard move after all. Great episode.
I just can’t think of CAS as a Genesis album 🤷♂️
Check the album cover.
W Jerry for fixing the ranking 😂😂😂
And no, when you discover the band doesn’t necessarily mean that’s the era you’d prefer. I grew up with those 80’s stuff but I know better….the PG era is easily far better than anything without PG.
Wait. The podcast has been out for 7 hours and no one hates me yet. That can’t be right
Do Pink Floyd!
Please do wheel of prog of pink floyd
Trespass needs to be higher. And everything from Nursery to Wind in the top slot. I like Duke too. But I can live without the rest.
whoa your D tier would be my A tier, interesting
I was so hoping he'd move Cryme to A but you can't have everything lol.
Good discussion. I get that this show insists on prog, but Jesus He Knows Me is great for various reasons.
