Nice video. My top 5 is similar to a lot of the other commenters':
    1. Foxtrot
    2. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
    3. A Trick Of The Tail
    4. Nursery Cryme
    5. Selling England By The Pound
    Again, we'll done. Cheers.

Yes noticed that too, but does shows the point that they DO have similar voices and it’s easy to mistake them for one another. Good case in point.

Great episode! I agree with Pete that Trick Of The Tail seemed more like a follow-up to Selling England By The Pound than The Lamb did. And I also think Genesis hit their peak as lyric writers between 76 and 80. Their lyrics used to mean something. Starting with Abacab, their lyrics became more simple, less deep and very vague and meaningless at times. I mean, I love the music for the song Abacab, but the lyrics? When you turn on the pillow? How does one turn on a pillow???
My five favorite Genesis albums are, in descending order, are Nursery Cryme, And Then There Were Three, Trick of the Tail, Duke and Selling England By The Pound. Number six and seven would be Trespass and The Lamb Lies Down.

Now for the problematic, but still "really good in spots" albums.
    8. And Then There Were Three
    9. Self titled (1983)
    10. Invisible Touch

interesting how varied the top 5 albums are - not just in this video but other “genesis albums ranked” on youtube; i think a lot has to do with the significant changes they made throughout the years (addition of phil collins, steve hackett after the first two albums, the departure of peter gabriel, departure of steve hackett, etc) it’s hard for me to nail down the right order. peter gabriel added such a theatrical flair, especially in lamb lies down; but i would say the seconds out version of suppers ready is superior to the original and other live performances of it. the climax is just perfect in the seconds out version, primarily with how the drum component is executed

Great video guys! “Selling England by the Pound” is the record for me. It just has everything great about Genesis. Surprised no one mentioned the song “It”which is the last song on the lamb. I agree that the album falls off a bit but at least for me that song just ropes me right back in. Great tune. Anyways here’s my ranking:
    1. Selling England

    4. Selling England by the Pound. The highest highs (FoF,) but weighed down by Schlepping Forest.
    3. Duke. "Turn It On Again" is the perfect marriage of everything.
    2. Foxtrot. Could be number one.
    1. Nursery Cryme. "The Fountain of Salmacis" is probably my number one Genesis song.

I agree - I LOVE Deep in the Motherlode . What an epic song . True proggy goodness and it seems lyrically to lament going off for big success , finding out the grass isn’t greener , and that one should be satisfied with what you are / what you have rather than trying to keep up with the Jones’s …. An Amazing track

Being honest most of the 80s and beyond catalogue is at best OK. But compared to their 70s output pales into insignificance.

I've been a Genesis fan for 50 years, so I've done the time ...
    My top 5 list :-
    1. Selling England By The Pound
    2. Foxtrot
    3. A Trick Of The Tail
    4. Wind and Wuthering
    5. Nursery Cryme
PS Sorry but I just don't get Martin's take on Genesis at all. He has 3 'Genesis threesome' albums in his top 5. And Abacab at No. 1 .. ridiculous. For me it's the worst Genesis album.
... and I agree with Pete when he says that Duke is their last truly great album.

    4. Foxtrot
    5. A Trick of the Tail/Lamb
Something like that. Putting a tie for #5 as the two are just about interchangeable. Nos. 1 and 2 are neck and neck, too.
I like both Gabriel and Collins - the solo material; for different reasons, obviously. Speaking of the latter: he was huge globally; the UK, US, Germany, Brazil...he had tons of fans from those nations, and then some...FAR beyond the US pop audience alone. Just seems not to appeal to a significant number of hard rock/metal and prog fans, regardless of location.
Hack, you've heard it in the video, and read it in the comments. Here's one more: Tales was not the best place to get acquainted with Yes. Go for The Yes Album or Fragile. If you like those, proceed to Close to the Edge and Going for the One. If you're good with those, then try Relayer and Tales.
    Great episode.

“This was their first album with Steve Hackett and it was important to what direction they were going to go in as a band. They could so easily have gone in a Yes direction but instead they went on from here more into the song format. Genesis turned one way at the junction and Yes turned the other way ... Nursery Cryme remains a very interesting album musically." - Rick Wakeman on one of his favorite prog-rock albums, Nursery Cryme

  • @garypowell1540
    @garypowell1540 Год назад +1

Prog was a cozy elite club mainly for spotty middle-class college boys up to around 78. Most of these groups may have been playing repeat concerts before massive audiences all over the world but even that was never going to be enough for most of the players. They may have made their fortune but they nearly all wanted the fame and therefore the recognition from the great unwashed to go with it. To be this good the individual needs to be driven by ambition, therefore there is always a need for more and greater things deeply ingrained in their consciousness. In other words, they can say what they want and try to look as cool as they want, but they all secretly wanted a hit single, with only a very few exceptions. Mozart may have played all of his concerts in front of aristocrats or other rich mothers, but he still wanted the common people to be humming his tunes in the streets.
Therefore popular music came to pass a very long time ago. However, it may be popular but this does not in itself make it good music or the best music.
As a general rule, if most or a lot of people like or want it, I don't. It may be a sad thing to say, but this was one of the major reasons why most prog fans loved their prog album collections so much. It helped them deal with their spotty chins a little bit easier and provided a ready excuse for not yet having a job or a girlfriend or being able to dance properly.

The Yes Album or Fragile are the places to start. They both have radio songs. Fragile has what I consider their heaviest song - South Side of the Sky. 90125 is pretty good too.

Pardo! Popoff! Walt and the Gestalt! Psyched to see this show, bro! Here’s my recent ranking of their full discography:
    15. From Genesis to Revelation. (Too twee and tepid for me.)
    14. We Can’t Dance. (“Fading Lights” is the highlight. “Hold on my Fart” bores the heck outta… zzz 🥱… 💤… )
    13. Calling All Stations (“The Dividing Line” is my fave, and l like “Congo” & a few others, too. Good, not great. Rumpilstiltskin dude is cool, but he’s no Philly Cheese 🧀 Steak 🥩 or Pit Gabe.)
    12. Trespass (After the mellow yellow fellow that was their debut album, this is a step in the right direction. No Phil & no Hacky Sack yet, but Ant 🐜 Man has some fresh fiery fretwork, especially on “The Knife.” 🔪)
    11. Invisible 🫥 Touch. (Some of the 80s keyboard sounds and production tricks immediately date the album, but there are some sweet treats to feast on. “Domino” freakin’ rules! I also like “The Brazilian,” a very cool instrumental. “Throwing It All Away” is a big ballad l dig, too.)
    10. And Then There Were Three. (Keyboards galore! Banks is such an understated and underrated keysman that really never gets too much glory. He’s a sterling songwriter, plays perfectly for every song, but can solo like a MoFo when it’s needed. I like every tune here, except “Say It So, Joe” blows.)
    9. Abacab. (Definitely the first Genesis elpee l ever bought for myself, when it came out in 1982. For that reason alone, it’s very special to me. However, “Who Dunnit?” SUCKS and is even MORE annoying than Journey’s “Back Talk.” And “Me and Sarah Jane” is okay, not my fave Banks penned number.)
    8. Nursery Cryme. (The first LP with Collins and Hackett. PP on SoT is fond of saying that sometimes a few songs elevate the overall greatness of a particular platter. That is absolutely the case here, in my opinion. “The Musical Box,” “… Hogweed” and “ … Salmacis” up the ante on this record. These three mini-epics from 8 minutes to 10 & 1/2 minutes are all incredible.)
    7. Genesis. (Their 1983 self-titled album has a perfect side one. Side two hasn’t aged as well. “Illegal Alien” is a song that couldn’t be released today, but it’s still cute and catchy. l never thought these three Brits released it with any malice intended. The whole “Home by the Sea” mini-epic is my fave here, along with “That’s All” & “Taking It All Too Hard.”)
    6. The Ham Lies Down on Broadway. (Yes, l typed it that way on porpoise 🐬 [ 😉 ] because there is too much fat contained within… like most double albums. {Physical Graffiti by Zep is one rare exception} Highlights for me are the title track, “Counting Out Time,” “In The Cage,” “The Carpet Munchers… l mean CRAWLERS,” and “Back in N.Y.C..” By the way, Tony the Tiger’s 🐅 fleet fingered soloing on “… Cage” are friggin’ exceptional!!)
    5. Duke. (The first Genesis music l ever recall hearing were the three or four rock radio singles from this stellar song cycle/concept album. Besides the hits, “Man of Our Times” is a great Dave Deep Dive Tune. Quite the cohesive record with a great flow, spirited songs, and interesting instrumental interplay.)
    4. Wind & Wuthering. (Banks favorite Genesis release is top notch in my book. It runs the gamut from a few mini-epics to pop to jazz fusion to big ballads. “Blood on the Rooftops,” “Afterglow,” “Eleventh Earl of Mar” & “One for the Vine” are my top choices here.)
    3. Foxtrot. (The behemoth that IS “Supper’s Ready” to end the album. The eerie opener “Watcher of the Skies” with Tony’s classic Mellotron intro and swells. ‘Nuff said.)
    2. A Trick of the Tail. (Philly Cheese 🧀 Steak 🥩 takes over on vocals and KILLS IT! No duff tracks and the four members appear to have a psychic link when they play, just like the intense instrumental interplay on the Yes album Drama. But l digress… no one EVER talks about my favorite Tony Banks song, “Mad Man Moon.” This song has an incredible instrumental keyboard section with Tony layering different sounds like Jimmy Page or Brian May with their guitar orchestrations. Sometimes l try to count all the different keyboard sounds he’s using, but then get lost in his compositional prowess. He truly is a Lord of the ‘Boards! Oh yeah, “… Volcano 🌋,” “Ripples,” “Squonk,” & “Entangled” are more highlights.)
    1. Selling England by the Pound. (To me, this is their magnum opus. All five men shine ✨ and all the songs are catchy, challenging & just plain awesome. Obviously, “Firth of Fifth” has what most people consider to be Steve’s best solo within the Genesis catalog and l cannot argue with that. Needless to say - but I’m typing it anyway - l simply ADORE 🥰 Banks piano intro to that sterling song 🎧 as well. At nearly 54 minutes in length, there are no wasted seconds or notes. And Genesis were making CD length running time releases in the vinyl age! )
Cheers from Noo Yawk, ova heyah!

Starting off listening to Yes with Topographic Oceans is like starting off listening to Jethro Tull with A Passion Play. Don't Do IT! 🤣The problem with Topographic Oceans is the first of the four side long songs is the weakest. Once you get past The Revealing Science of God (Dance of the Dawn) and get into The Remembering (High the Memory) it starts to flow better. But like Pete and Martin said start with the three albums preceding it or go to Going For the One or Drama. Drama may be your best starting point because Steve Howe is at his most "metal" on it, especially on Machine Messiah.
My top 5 Genesis albums are:
5: Abacab (I, like Martin, have no problem with this album)
    4: Foxtrot
3: Wind and Wuthering (I like, moody dark albums)
2: The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
    1: Nursery Cryme

If someone never heard of Genesis.. I don't think Abacab is a bad choice to recommend. It certainly stands out in the discography and is a much more easy listen than most their records.. If not all. I know the traditional progers won't agree.. But I am not talking about you guys. I am talking about general rock and pop fans. Abacab is catchy.
Is Abacab my favorite? Well.. No. But I would probably put it somewhere in the middle if I ranked all the records.

Agree Abacab a good jumping-off point. Or the 1983 self-titled one too.
Because you do get some of the borderline prog elements with Mama and of course home by the Sea part 1 and 2.
Then if it was me and somebody really wanted to get a little further I would recommend the 1976 trick of the tail and if you really get into some of the longer stuff then perhaps jump into either nursery crime or foxtrot. That's just how I would introduce somebody to the band

All of you like/love The Lamb but none of you mentioned the amazing track called In the Cage so I had to do it, always love when it comes on when listening to the record!
    1. Selling England
    2. The Lamb
    3. A Trick of the Tail
    4. Nursery Cryme
    5. Wind and Wuthering
Also, who the hell tries to get into Yes by listening to 'Tales' OMG that made me laugh hard...! 😂 I'm a huge fan and could never sit through said double album... Hack, try again with The Yes Album, CTTE, Going for the One or, as Pete said, Drama, which can get pretty heavy at places.

Curious how y'all do your notes on the albums. I did a ranking show recently and feel like I missed a lot which I wanted to discuss. Any advice/suggestions/comments you have on how to go about this would be very helpful to me. Just starting to watch. Have never heard ...And Then There Were Three in its entirety, and really want to give it a listen now.

I'll just review the albums and jot down my thoughts about individual songs or performances or the album as a whole. Then I use those notes as talking points. Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel. Cheers

My Top 5 and favorite track from each:
    5. Wind and Wuthering (The album overall has a nice balance of accessible prog and the AOR direction they were heading, but more adventurous than post-Hackett. Despite Banks' tendency to over dominate, this contains some of his best work ever) - Blood on the Rooftops
    4. The Lamb (Apparently influenced by Quadrophenia and attempting to top Topographic, the album as a whole feels overlabored and at 95 minutes, the surreal story too often gets in the way of the music. Like Yes' dense double, it probably would've flowed better and been more cohesive, maybe even a masterwork, if shortened.) - Carpet Crawlers
    3. Selling England by the Pound (Continued improvement as musicians with better production. The high points stand out so much so that some critics and fans give the lesser songs that weigh this down a pass. Some of the filler is decent but I could really do without the overlong verbiage of "The Battle of Epping Forest" and the slight, half-baked "More Fool Me") - Firth of Fifth
    2. Nursery Cryme (An eccentric English storybook vibe with a surreal days of old atmosphere. The flaws somehow enhance the weirdness, mostly for the better I say) - The Musical Box
    1. Foxtrot (Probably the most consistent and well-written of their art rock/prog albums) - Can-Utility and the Coastliners
    Honorable Mention:
A Trick of the Tail - Dance On a Volcano
    Duke - Duchess
    Best of the rest:
    Trespass - The Knife
    Genesis - Mama
The Rough Guide To Rock reviewed Invisible Touch as "calculated and oddly emotionless AOR", which reminds me of Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho. It was implied in the novel (and film of the same name) that Genesis' 80s music was not unlike the yuppie serial killer investment banker Patrick Bateman, i.e. having a seemingly indefectible surface but being empty at the core.

Entangled too long? You gotta be kidding. If there ever was a song that is the perfect length, it's every song on this album, especially Entangled. That instrumental coda would be too long if they went another round with it, and way too short if they cut out that last round where the bass pedals gloriously takes your attention to heaven. So, just like Mad Man Moon, Dance On A Volcano, and the title track just perfect length. Robbery Assault And Battery might be too long for its own good, but I might be biased because it's my least favorite and everything else are great songs.

I know these are just opinionated lists, but if Martin really wants to be taken seriously then why is he always coming out of left field with some oddball choice of a record?

For me it's a run of exciting, adventurous, interesting and intelligent (and emotional!!!) Gabriel albums. Once he left, the theatricality is all but gone, the lyrical content instantly becomes much less interesting and formulaic so the music overall suffers (just looking at the much plainer song titles really betrays the contents). Then with a couple of strong singles dotted around and a few cool album tracks here and there, I find myself preferring Phil Collins' early solo stuff. Imo Collins' Genesis never released anything as brilliant as 'In the Air Tonight' or 'Easy Lover'!!!
    1. The Lamb
    2. Foxtrot
    3. Selling England
    4. Nursery Cryme (mainly for Hogweed)
    5. Trespass (Imo more consistent than Foxtrot apart from Visions of Angels but the drums are quite poor).
