I'm not talking about fasting yet. Sauerkraut is awesome for the liver and gut. Artichokes are great. Add those to your burger if you want to create a twang. Gluten free mayo if you like mayo on your burger. Avoid tuna in a can. It often has mercury in it. Extra virgin olive oil is the only oil I use for the foods that need it. Avocados are great as well. I have been "intermittent fasting" basically since I am 12 years old. I have always hated breakfast with a passion and when I was olf enough to be able to skip it, I did. Everyone was mad at me, and told me skipping breakfast is basically worse than smoking, but I didn't care, it felt right to me. So I have been doing something like 16/8 for most of my life. I am 40 now and I look like 30, if even. Maybe lucky genes, but maybe it's also related to the fasting....

You should have added some whe food carbs to your vegan diet. For example, oatmeal with breakfast and potatoes or some whole grains with your dinner. The starches provide needed calories and satiety. The keto diet is not sustainable for the body because it is intrinsically inflammatory because of its high fat and protein content. Do more research to confirm this, and consider switching back to the whole food vegan diet. All the best to you.

That's the genius of fasting... You learn what is best for you. I drink my coffee with favored cream but no sugar cause sugar is too sweet for me. I vary my fasting schedule and don't keep up with the windows by only eating when I am hungry. So if I get hungry but can't stop to eat I just extend my fast. If on the other hand I only have 10 minutes to eat then I eat in 10 minutes.
Sometimes people get hung up on whether it's a clean or dirty fast but I look at it like this there are all types of fast: clean/dirty, dry/ water, veggie only/meat only, IF, OMAD, ADF and so many eating/fasting windows and no one is the same. Take your time, do your research and find out works best for you and your body. It's all trial and error.
Fasting is NOT a diet. It's a lifestyle change. Fasting is learning to eat less. In America we overdose on food, eating too much and too often. Remember information (applied knowledge of what works for you) is the key. From there gleam what helps you reach your goals and throw out the rest. This is a marathon and a lifestyle change or you will be right back here trying to do a quick fix. Don't beat yourself up for slip ups. Just reset and start again. Detoxing and learning how to live differently isn't easy but well worth it.

For myself I have found that the desire to eat has nothing to do with hunger; it's more about a restless mouth and a need for oral stimulation. Given that, I found two things that are very helpful for staying on a schedule of intermittent fasting. The first is sugarless chewing gum, which satisfies the oral craving. The second is flossing my teeth when I'm tempted to snack; that totally does away with the desire to eat.

That may have worked in my 30s but as soon as my training slowed down and I didn’t modify my eating habits I started to gain weight . Not an enormous amount but it was creeping up on me and then when menopause hit I thought just put it down to that . I’ve always been pretty health conscious and reasonably active so putting on weight was very frustrating .
After watching many videos like this one I adapted the fasting method but researched into why it works . The surprising fact is we’ve all done it in our lives for example in my 20s after a late night , eat at midnight but then pretty much fast the next day so I wouldn’t put on weight . It was mostly an impulse thing . Fasting makes so much sense .
I have tackled the menopause weight , fasting, working out but not the high intensity cardio of the past . My waist has shrunk among other things and my overall health is so much better .

As our adviser Walter Willett of the Harvard School of Public Health puts it: “Meat is like radiation: We don’t know the safe level.” Indeed, research suggests that 30-year-old vegetarian Adventists will likely outlive their meat-eating counterparts by as many as eight years. At the same time, increasing the amount of plant-based foods in your meals has many salutary effects. In the blue zones people eat an impressive variety of garden vegetables when they are in season, and then they pickle or dry the surplus to enjoy during the off-season. The best of the best longevity foods in the Blue Zones diet are leafy greens such as spinach, kale, beet and turnip tops, chard, and collards. In Ikaria more than 75 varieties of edible greens grow like weeds; many contain ten times the polyphenols found in red wine. Studies have found that middle-aged people who consumed the equivalent of a cup of cooked greens daily were half as likely to die in the next four years as those who ate no greens."

My snack of choice is nuts, mostly walnuts and most of the time that allows me to skip lunch. I usually drink a protein shake for breakfast as well as 1 or 2 20 oz coffee with cream. And sometimes the nuts with a couple cans (4 oz) of salmon and maybe a hard boiled egg for supper. I do drink a lot of water but sometimes I drink juices like grapefruit, cranberry and pomegranate with no added sugar. A few times a week I'll have grilled chicken with broccoli, coliflower & carrots 🥕 🥦 for supper. Today I drank grapefruit juice when I got hungry and the juice absolutely killed my hunger 🙂. I eat a tuna salad 🥗 plate a couple times per week also. I have changed to this type of diet when I started a weight training regimen. I started this change in life style at the beginning of April 2022 because I was out shopping for the next size short pants, going from 38" waist to 40"! 🤨😡 I got angry with me and decided I'm NOT going to buy 40" pants! I'm going to get back in shape, tone up and gain muscle mass as well as strength. Stop eating so improperly and DROP weight. I turned 60 years old on August 6 2022. I had gotten up to 238 lbs, first day weight-in in April. It took me 6 weeks to drop 26 lbs and am now shopping for 36" pants again instead of 40". 🙂 By the way I'm a 6'1" tall male. I'm finding it hard to to drop the last 12 lbs to reach my goal of 200 lbs but I think thats due to the fact that I am remarkably stronger than when I started, so I figure I'm gaining muscle mass as quickly as I dropped so much belly fat. Maybe I'll pepper in some fasting soon, but I worry about slowing muscle gains...😐 phew I got wordy lol 😆
This has been some great info, sir and guests. Thanks 😊 much. 👏👍👍
PS. My weight training includes keeping my pulse rate elevated for the entire 1.5 - 2.5 hr workouts, so "cardio" is covered at the same time. I'm going start getting on my bicycle 🚲 a lot more too, especially on my weight training break days. I'd like to get more lean. All this has really done me quite a bit of good, including an amazing increase of energy every day and I feel YEARS younger again lol 😃.

The human body is a furnace, burning energy all the time, which causes aging and a wear out of the furnace. The idea is to eat as little as possible with as much as possible dietary value. This makes your furnace burn a lot less, while still providing nutrition. There is research I have read about a while ago that the body starts healing itself at the third day of total fasting (zero food, limited water for 3 days.) And the same research showed that for every day increasing the fasting, the healing powers multiply, so that it's worth it to fast longer than 3 days, perhaps a week, for a fantastic result.

I began fasting about April 2023. The first 8 months or so produced all the amazing results being talked about in this video.
Then for about four months I regressed and began eating my old way on the weekends. Beer, junk food snacking between meals on the weekends. During the week I fasted but began eating three meals a day like I used to do. Or I would cheat with snacks. Well, I started getting the old results. Not losing weight efficiently, stomach growing, difficulty waking up and finding energy for the day, exercising less. Not to mention all the vascular damage I was doing to already damaged arteries. I was fasting yet trying to mix my old lifestyle with it. I got disciplined and am getting back on track again feeling good.

    Hello Dr. Chatterjee!
Greetings from Germany! As I learn more about the "Fasting Movement" the more I think, this could be not just only a Western problem, but a problem stemming from the American way of eating.
Looking to my right and left neighbours, neither the French nor the Polish eat, like you and your collegues describe.
We eat three (to four, mostly on weekends) times a day. We eat what we grow locally (think like in the EU) per preference. And we Germans tend to eat a light early dinner as well.
To widen the horizon, the rest of the world usually has just enough, or even not enough to eat!
In conclusion *I* think this might be a very priveliged problem.
What is your opinion on this? Are the health problems in third worlds the same?
I love your interviews very much! You are structured, you really interact and bring new ideas to the table. Your language is easy to understand and very professional and precise at the same time.
    Regards!

Humans in the 3rd world, almost always eat whole foods, more so natural and/or organic foods. They do not eat packaged, highly processed foods, but even if they do in certain regions, it wouldn't be on the grand scale as we in the West. Many ethnic tribal groups, whether they be in South Asia or Africa, tend to eat either meats or vegetables, but again, it's pretty much whole foods and all unpackaged natural foods. This does make for much healthier humans, can prolong life/make for longer lifespans.

I started doing the 18/24 fasting period previously. I don't like eating breakfast if I'm not hungry. My first meal is around 12 pm and dinner at 5 pm sometimes 5:30 pm. I found I can easily control what food I eat on this schedule. I wasn't losing weight on 18/24. I drank a coffee in the morning with sugar. So I've cut out sugar totally now and also coffee. So far I've lost about 3 lbs in 3 days. I'm trying to eat a lot more vegetables. I'm still eating whatever I want but I'm adding a salad or some other form of vegetables.

If you ask them a question about DIET or HEALTH they will tell you " I am a doctor, Not a DIETICIAN ", and will start preparing a referral to a dietician. Recently I asked my doctor what he thought about NIACIN supplements. He replied, "What is Niacin?"

The points of the Kempner diet were never "rice is the best health food". It was that rice has enough protein and is readily available to most people, it's easy to cook and easy to digest. The diet itself is not dependent on rice, though. It's dependent on people learning to eat real food with out a lot of exciting additions and to be fairly monotonous in their eating, so as to keep their desire for exciting foods in a rational balance. Basically. Which is also what Dr. McDougall tells people to do to lose weight - with or without rice. Rely on natural foods, find yourself 3-4 recipes that you can really enjoy and find easy to prepare that are high starch, low fat, low salt, low sugar and serve them alongside or after such things as fruit and vegetables, and thereby give yourself an energy producing monotonous but enjoyable set of foods to eat that are also eat to shop for and probably easy to clean up from. After you lose weight, maybe occasionally switch out a meal for something a little more exciting. End of story.
And, I've done some v ariations on following the advice of Dean Ornish, Walter Kempner, John McDougall as well as Jason Fung and Eric Berg, plus what Joyful Belly suggested on how to eat for Kapha balance, and all of them worked to an appreciable degree. Dr. Berg, I followed his advice and was still having carbs and I lost weight. Got too energetic, though. Maybe I wouldn't have, if I had cut carbs! I've also eaten just potatoes and it was true for me, as others have claimed, that a plain potato was great and I had no desire for further foods, as soon as I started eating just potatoes. I would try to eat salad with dressing and that was just in the way of the good, natural flavor of a baked potato. Ate congee and it was excellent, too. Very plain, simple, sounded boring but it was soul satisfying, just like the potato. Eat for satisfaction, not excitement! That's what I learned.

I already do intermittent fasting and love it, but you're right the sugar and the bread are going to stump some people....like me. It is so hard to give up when you have been eating these substances for years. My only other thought is the issue of insurance and money... it becomes a deterrent for so many who do not have health insurance or extra cash to fork out for all these tests and eating healthier/organic foods. One more example of why, at least here in America, we need a major overhaul in our health insurance industry, not to mention our current economy. 🥴

@@jeaneliza23 food here in Canada has gone up again. I’m lucky that I like liver because it’s a cheap powerhouse of nutrition . I’m 6 weeks into no sugar and less than 20 gms of carbs in a day. Feeling good

Fascinating research. The only disturbing aspect to the intervew was when Falicia very casually mentioned how animal research trumped human reearch, as they could cut off the animal heads afterwoulds to find out what was happening inside them. Quite chilling.

Fasting window has really impacted my life for good. I always had a dream of getting those abs which I got through fasting would never have achieved when you're eating every 3-4hrs which is basics of muscle building.

Wow fascinating commentaries, I’m particularly intrigued in the correlation between eating a healthy diet of Whole Foods( Mediterranean diet)and how it mitigates depression in people and produces fantastic results in their well being! Thank you!

I had stopped Pepsi (was drinking 2 liters a day) and i did it with caffeine pills to only get rid of the sugar. I don't drink coffee cause it tastes so bad. I restarted pepsi after about 2 months of being without and I am again starting to feel dizzy (vertigo) which had almost stopped when I was without pepsi for that period. So I am back on the no pepsi journey, starting today.
