  • In this video I show how I designed and made my own latch hook kit!
    First, I show the canvas mesh I used and how I cut it to size. Next, I show how I created my design on 4x4 graph paper and transfer it onto the mesh, and lastly I cut the strands of yarn to be equal 2.5" lengths.
    Correction: I used parchment paper, not wax paper, to trace the design

    My son has been doing latch hook for 3 years now. He has anxiety and this calms him. I think the next thing is him to design his own. Hes 13. My grandfather used to latch hook and it was one of my fondest memories on him. Thanks so much. You made it very easy to understand.

      That's really cool, and heartwarming. I'm going to design my own too (now that I know how). I bet your son could make some really neat stuff.

    Lovely I have always wondered how to accomplish the picture to mesh part. I just started doing these again after a 35 year hiatus. Always wondered how they did the pieces of yarn so consistently as well. You have taught me a lot in this video. Thank you ❤❤

    Very helpful! For a door mat sized rug, I used the back side of giftwrap that already had a grid on it. I had to add lines to make the graph the right size, but it worked like a charm. This tutorial helped me solve the question of how to get the color pattern onto the rug mesh. Thank you!

    Hello, I used to do latch hook years ago. I just got back to many of my crafts and I am enjoying every bit of it. Your tutorial of how to transfer onto the mesh is absolutely great. I am on my way now. I will send pictures of my work as soon as I complete a project. Thank you

    Used to love doing latchhook as a kid! How neat to make your own pattern!

    Thanks for this, I skipped the marker pen on canvas step and found it much easier to work from the design directly and count the squares as you starting from the bottom of the canvas working horizontally. Also, I tried the pom pom maker for cutting lengths and found it equally effective cutting a piece of card to half the desired yarn length in width & wrap yarn around loosely so not to stretch the yarn.

    I bought an actual latch rug kit a few years ago. Beautiful pattern. Huge rug. Perfect size and colors to fill a bare wall. Gorgeous colors to have in the sunlight. I was enraged with it though because after I got into it and had about a square foot of it finished, (and about twenty more to go) I realized how badly made it was. I had known that when I first started that the pattern was a little biased on the fabric, but I ignored that. But then started feeling like there was this weird scratchy dirt getting on my hands and I was ignoring that.
    But then, while I was latching a row, a whole line of string just came out of the fabric and about a hundred stitches were undone and the whole thing was ruined and I could not think of how to selvage that.
    Then I started to also realize that all this scratchy dust was the yarn just disintegrating in my hands. And recalled that the latch tool I got with the rug had been missing.
    Never buying another kit.
    But I SO love latch hooking, and I'll be making my own kits like this now.

    Just WOW !!! I never THOUGHT of transferring a design in this way !!! It seems so simple to do. I have so many pictures and/or designs I'm wanting to make into a latch hook project. Now, I know how to easily transfer the colors onto the latch hook fabric I have. 😉 Now, I need to figure out how to enlarge the images I'm wanting to make. Any suggestions ? TYSM for sharing all these methods with us. Love your channel. 🥰😉😻

    I use a 3/4 inch wooden dowel and they all come out to 2.5 inches. Any hardware store will have the dowel.

    What a great clear video! Could i please ask how you do your graph paper on excel ? Thanks Chrissie

    • @KnittingHouseSquare
      @KnittingHouseSquare  3 года назад +1

      Thank you! Great question - I linked a post below that explains how to make graph paper in excel, and then basically what I do is I print it out, hold it up to my mesh to compare sizes, and adjust it in excel again to get it just right - can take a few tries to get the boxes exactly the same. Hope that helps!

    This was just the thing I needed to see. My only question is, how would you recommend making letters? On my project I want to Add a name to it

    • @KnittingHouseSquare
      @KnittingHouseSquare  3 года назад +1

      Great question! To do letters I would first count out my number of squares available and number of letters required to fit - then divide to determine how many squares I have available per letter. Then once I know the max size per letter I would sketch out the letters by hand on some graph paper. When I do this I like to draw just a thin line of the letter, then fill in the squares around it to figure out how bold I would like the letter in each location. I hope that helps!

    Great instructional video! I didn’t see how you transfer the wax design onto the mesh. Do you iron the wax sheet onto the mesh?

    • @tracyrademaker1453

      It looks like the wax paper prevents the sharpies from bleeding on the graph paper.

      Hi! Unfortunately, I do not know of any substitutes for using a latch hook here.

    • @JaJa-hi6jz
      @JaJa-hi6jz 3 года назад +1

      The latch hook will be easier work with, and they're only about 4 bucks at Wal-Mart. But...I've used a plastic needle as well. Not threaded, more of a stuffing the thread through the hole kind of thing. It's a bit more time consuming, but not impossible. Best of luck ☺
