This version is outta this world. Marvin's sanging his tail off and his musicianship is so in the pocket I can't take it. There's a darker edge to this version too that i can't stop listening. Thanks for posting
Marvin was in a pretty dark place when this was recorded.. 1969 tammi terrell was on her death bed , his marriage was collapsing , he tried to commit suicide , his brother was in vietnam.. my man had alot going on
By far, one of the greatest soulful singers the world has ever heard. His tone, phrasing, articulation, dynamics and signature will never be equaled again..never ever!!!
This is one of the best soul performances I’ve ever sang. The power he had when he was young alongside with his technique was unmatchable. You can clearly see he has fed with music since he was born.
This is the best footage I've seen of Marvin singing Grapevine live. Incredible performance from a musical genius. Totally wasted on what appears to be a totally white, middle-aged audience from that time who clearly don't realise what greatness they're witnessing. And I say that as a (now!) middle-aged, white man myself. Guess this was the days of segregated audiences for TV shows etc. Sad.
Dead is ok, at times. So glad he wasn't at some Holiness Church with ppl YELLING the whole way through. I'm from that church and sometimes.... sometimes ppl need to just STHU and realize that the only mouth need to be moving during a concert is the entertainer's. ijs
Most artist would agree that their energy level on stage is highly influenced by the audience. There probably were many white women who were screaming on the inside but had to control their outward affection for this handsome black guy during this time in history.
@@RaisingmalesshapingkingsYeah I thought the same. It was during late 60’s. At those times the Civil Rights Act had already been enacted (1964). But this performance was just 5 years after. Society was still very racially divided. See how such a big artist he was that he kept high energy all through the performance with a silent audience. That’s being a real professional singer!
Fewer guns in this country and a culture that didnt emphasize toxic masculinity and we might have had this supremely righteous man with us for a good many more years...
I was 14 yo and had my little battery-powered transistor radio tight against my ear, while I walked down the street. I knew every word. Now, I've got to order some more Motown CDs. Thanks, Mr Bouhelier!
Amoooooooooo beautifal, the audience is stiff Excellent performance my brethren...RIP mr Gaye my friend... beautifal, the audience is stiff Best voice in the history of man. Period!
I can see a doubt not in his abilities but in himself. You can see how relaxed he in on the surface but then through moments the uncertainty. Also I can see why he hated or wasnt comfortable in live shows as dealing with unforeseen problems that might have frustrated him. Wish he only believed more in himself.
This is great obviously, but Anyone know of a live version with the verse starting ‘people say believe half of what you see, son and none of what you hear’? Thanks
Jalen Ngonda does. There's others I just don't have time to list them but there's a lot of great talent out there making records of this quality but it's just not in the mainstream.
A crime against humanity Marvin Gaye had to sing to an audience of dead zombies. Sister in the front 2:15 couldn't hold her being alive, and started moving just for her friend to remind her the rule was to be still.
I KNOW YALL NOT GOING TO BELIEVE ME, BUT THATS REALLY DAVID RUFFINS VOICE ON THIS TRACK, JUST LIKE ITS RALPH TRESVENT VOICE ON EVERY LIL STEP I TAKE 5/1/19
Get ur head examined... I'm part of the Motown family... the only substitute was Valerie Simpson for Tammi while she was sick in the history of this legendary record label.

The best music is dark, painful. Happy music doesn’t compare.
Wow 😮, Reponse eccentric!!!
By far, one of the greatest soulful singers the world has ever heard. His tone, phrasing, articulation, dynamics and signature will never be equaled again..never ever!!!
Him and Ray Charles both
He is the greatest singer of all time
I see that Marvin sang here at a cemetary!!! In front of a bunch of stiffs!
Imagine hearing Marvin Gaye in today's era !
YEAH Watch OUT for Dad's With Guns
@@sirkrutchbluesman3009 lol cause these singers can't compare
Oh he was ahead of his time
The Shame is he wouldn't fit into . They place him with neo soul and handle him like Joe who is a sanging brother his self .
@@Troygraham4937 he'd bring back soul. I feel like his voice can transcend into any era
Excellent live. This must be the last known footage, of him without the Beard.
Nope it’s not ….the Motown museum in Detroit has a lot of it
This is the best version of this song , really good
Most unique voice ever may his perfect soul Rest In Peace
Wow the piano just adds the touch.

Pure talent - rip Marvin. Never forgotten
What’s wrong with the people in the audience? I’d be UP screaming, singing and dancing! In the presence of THE legendary Marvin? C’mon!!!!!!
They enjoying it they want to hear this historic performance hard to interrupt when you hear one of gods angels sing like that for us!
The Voice of an Angel 😳

Ain't nothing like the real thing. Breathtaking.
The look the ladies in the front row give each other at 2:18 haha. That glance speaks a thousand words!
That was one dead audience. Marvin's killin' it onstage, and they sit there looking like they're in an art museum.

They was in an art museum that night my friend.

It's the end & reprise for me in 2021!!!
This rendition by the man Marvin Gaye was the best selling single in the history or Motown recordings.
Excellent performance my brethren...RIP mr Gaye my friend...

Wicked performance! I love it !! RIP Marvin Gaye
Best voice in the history of man. Period!
The audience must have taken Xanax before the concert because they look quite dead.
I was 14 yo and had my little battery-powered transistor radio tight against my ear, while I walked down the street. I knew every word.

Simply a King ...RIP always
Senior citizen front row! They thought they were in the Lawrence Welk's studio, one room over.

Rest In Peace Marvin Gaye
Cantava pra caralho!
The big chill
I think the next year he would witness Tammy Terrell pass away and from there it was all down hill 😣
Coming from a 45 year-old, they don't make solo artists like they used to anymore!!
He might be the goat
I can see a doubt not in his abilities but in himself. You can see how relaxed he in on the surface but then through moments the uncertainty. Also I can see why he hated or wasnt comfortable in live shows as dealing with unforeseen problems that might have frustrated him. Wish he only believed more in himself.
Nicole O Scott oh....you can read his mind. Nobody can ever touch Marvin or the other music from MOTOWN. Now it’s all digitally produced.
Who could possibly enjoy giving their all in the presence of an audience of wax museum dolls?
This is great obviously, but Anyone know of a live version with the verse starting ‘people say believe half of what you see, son and none of what you hear’? Thanks
That shirt collar deserves to be on Jerry Seinfeld
The audience looks like an oil painting. Many have no idea that they are witnessing musical genius.
That man has sex appeal
I agree with everything @desotoguitar says in his commentary, though I think he forgot mentioning style. Geez! Did Marvin ever have style!
And they don't make records like they used to anymore either!!
Jalen Ngonda does. There's others I just don't have time to list them but there's a lot of great talent out there making records of this quality but it's just not in the mainstream.
I'm just wondering how can you just sit there and not get into it !!!!! I would be on my feet!!!
The audience looks pissed.
I would be up dancing not sitting there.
Is anyone able to figure out the date and location of this performance? I’ve been looking but I can’t figure it out.
0:38
That audience was dead as hell...and we all know why.
LOL
Song was about Bobby Womack sleeping with his wife
Oh....
Why wasn't his father prosecuted for killing him?
🥲

Is it the whole song? I know about the Bobby brown song every little step. That's Ralph at the beginning on the first verse.
You're right. I don't believe you haha
No I don’t believe you! That’s all Marvelous Marvin!!!
THE LIES YOU TELL LOL.. THATS MARVINS VOICE IN THE BEGINING MIDDLE AND END YOU CAN DENY THAT AND OF COURSE THIS AWESOME PERFORMACE PROVES IT!!!!!
