While she never got the public recognition she deserves, history will remember Joan Osborn as one of the very best singers of her era, and this concert as one of the finest displays of musicianship and soul ever recorded. The way she can turn the grit on and off when needed rips my heart out.
Joan got precisely what she wanted on her own terms. My love and admiration, from the first moment I dove into her reality at the Met Cafe in Providence, RI in the 90’s, when I witnessed purest joy, to whenever I can find her today, is unalloyed.
Thank goodness for RUclips and what can be found on it. I soaking up all the Funk Brothers I can as their time on earth gets shorter. A national treasure we will never witness again.
When Joan Osborne took the stage during the filming of In The Shadows Of Motown and began singing to me she was the best one of all the others that sang on that program. Her heart and soul was in each rendition of the original songs . The Funk Brothers along with The Wrecking Crew out of Los Angeles will never be duplicated again. Both had the best of the best playing. Thank you Barry Gordy.
Loved Standing in the Shadows of Motown. Became a huge Joan Osbourne fan after seeing her rendition of What Becomes of a Broken Heart. Great rendition here as well
I'd rather see someone who is plain in dress but with such a powerful voice than some of the over-hyped performers of today. Besides, no one would be saying this if it was a guy in a T-shirt, torn jeans and a pair of beat up Reeboks singing (Thinking Steve Tyler). But since it's a woman performer, she has to be criticized for how she dresses and looks? It's the voice that counts and on that, she delivers and she's not one who has to mask her natural beauty in a ton of schmaltz and glam.
The Funk Brothers and The Wrecking Crew are what studio musicians are all about. Oh, and those cats out of Philly! Oh, and those dudes out of Muscle Sholes and Nashville and Memphis. Without them, it would be hard to live without their talent and input.
Be sure to check out her: What Becomes of the Broken Hearted..OMG..if you appreciate MoTown (real music) you'll love her rendition of that ol classic. It'll take you back to a simpler time and place.
I thought she was sweet in all. But, for me, HEAT WAVE, was the one that zapped my soul 😁 She always oozed sexy vocals. Love Joan. I never thought anyone would come close to Martha or Linda in doing this song (Heat Wave). Linda’s was my ultimate fav.
I got to see Joan Osborne at The Met Cafe in Providence, RI in the 1990’s. She was a comet burning up that dark little dive. She was absolutely pure Joan and loving it. First time I heard her and her songs and I was lifted up and floored and beyond thrilled and deeply grateful that she brought that there. Then the business tried to take her, paint her up and make her a star. Stars stay where they’re put. A comet has places to go. I consider her as having made a lucky escape.
@@thathawaiiandude787 for me it's her singing Right Hand Man. She said she wanted to have a woman's version of a Oozing Sex Rolling Stones kinda song ... and she nailed it.
Wow you are a hip shaking mama beautiful woman thank God for the punk Brothers fabulous group with some great entertainers out of this world music thank you so much Jerry Metairie Louisiana
She is not only one of the best singers there is right now, she is a sexy beast, and the fact that she is not aware of that mekes her more interesting. Love her
100%. If you haven't seen her with Melissa Etheridge doing this song, check it out. It made me sweat a little. ruclips.net/video/VDDabG8HNFQ/видео.html
Sorry....no respect, but....Osborne is fine. BUT, she is entirely residual to the history and music behind this glorious music. The ONLY reason she is fronting this great band is her skin color. Her renditions, while OK I guess, carry none of the blood and rhythm of the hundred of singers who could do a much better job except for their skin color. Go Funk Brothers, but cool it with Joan Osborne.
how refreshing to see a SINGER who can be herself and get us all hooked on her she does not give a damn about the skimpy clothes rot of the brainwashed or being so skinny one looks like a dress on a coathanger she is proud to be a real woman and I love her can watch and listen to her for ages.
Back in the day when singing was for real, now it's just plain vocal gymnastics..going all over the place...runs and falsetto. Todays singers should listen to this stuff and hear how it should be done. Joan was one one the greatest female vocalists of all time and very under-rated too.
I grew up on Motown & Soul back in St. Louis, Mo. in the 1960s/70s. It left a big impression on my brain and I can't ever forget or get over it. I am 66 now from the Class of '66! *S*
I was at the show with the lead guitar player in my band. It was the biggest blowout of the MJF I have ever been to (yup, caught them all since the first jazz fest here in Montreal). From where I was standing, (about 10 meters from the stage) my estimate of the the size of the audience was at least 250,000 people. I was so blown away to hear so many of the tunes that were a part of the soundtrack of my teen age years. Some of the guys in the band were about my dad's age. Definitely one of the greatest performances I have ever seen. Many thanks to the Funk Brothers and Joan Osbourne. Keep on playing until the last of your days and may all your notes ever be sweet! Many thanks for the love you have shared with your music.
I was at this show. They had these gigantic screens set up on adjoining streets so the overflow of people could see as well as hear the show. It was tremendous. A good time was had by all. Memorable night. Can't beat Montreal festivals in the summer...
Love watching those videos of you and the funk Brothers it can't get any better than that you belong with the funk Brothers y'all are great I watched the video so many times I just wish they were all still here with you Metairie Louisiana
you know...i'm thinking this is why she didn't really get to be a bigger deal in the 90s. I think she is a classic case of being branded poorly. They tried to make her a folksy Jewell-like Alanis clone, and this lady has some soul. Not saying the others dont, but she just fits in this style so much better than the way she was marketed back then. Hats off to a killer voice, and a pretty lady too!
Wes, you're right. The more I listen to her, the more blues and soul I'm hearing! I don't remember even hearing her before the last few years, certainly a fan now though!
Wes Cash: I totally agree with you. I first came across her music when I was living in America in the 90's (I'm from England) and really liked her voice but felt that some of her music was a little insipid. Listening to this, and her live version of This Old Heart of Mine (which is even better than this and moved to tears when I came across it on here just now) I realise that she's so much more suited to soulful, bluesy music rather than the Jewel'ish music she was doing in the 90's. It might be the same case with Heather Nova, whose voice I also really liked but sometimes I felt that overall some of her songs could be a bit bland. Neither Joan nor Heather, as far as I know, had much recognition here in England but they definitely deserved more success here.
She didn't want that life. She didn't like the sudden celebrity and walked away from it. She has the pipes and is incredibly sexy on stage, but she loves to sing and doesn't have time for the PR and other nonsense. Pure musician.
It was in 90’s. 1 of us was a top hit and she had a Grammy nom. She didn’t produce hit records after that. I don’t like when bands get too big because tbh some groups are only meant to be so famous. She’s playing giant sold out venues world wide so as an artist that’s key. I think it matters as an artist to reach young teens to be mega famous. Joan is more sophisticated. If you reach that market plus older crowd that’s how you blow up like the Beatles
Joan is a finely tuned and polished rendition of Janis. She has the Soul of Aretha and the delivery of Ella but she can also split wood with her Janis like voice.
She is, along with Eva Cassidy, Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, and a select few more, one of a hand full of my favorite female artists. Iris DeMent, Sara Bareilles, Whitney, and Dido are all up there as well. Ms Osborne brings a lot to the microphone, that is for sure!
that's a bad ass girl right there. who else could get away with dropping a marvin gaye song? i've watched "standing in the shadows of motown" about 20 times but had no idea she ever did this show with these guys. pretty damn awesome.
That's obviously because you have no taste in clothes and no idea what dressing for a show is about...you are obviously a casualty of the Rock./Hip hop fashion DISASTER!!!!!!! She looks like shit....and is at best a mediocre singer. The background singers are MUCH BETTER!!! Obviously your taste in music is not much better than your taste in clothes
YOU MIGHT THINK ABOUT GETTING A MATCHING SET OF HEARING AIDS, IF YOU CAN'T HEAR THE TALENT IN THIS LADY'S VOICE. HEY PLAYTHELL, WHY DON'T I FIND YOU ON THE FASHION POLICE LIST, AND WHEN IS THE LAST TIME ANYBODY PAID YOU TO APPEAR IN PUBLIC WITH OR WITHOUT YOUR CLOTHES?
@whatsthebigfndeal I agree with you completely. I have seen that doco heaps of time but always go back to watch her version of What Becomes of the Broken Hearted...sensational. And for anyone to complain about her dress sense, two things; 1 I think she's gorgeous in whatever she wears and 2 she can wear anything she wants with a voice and show like that.
Its always good to see a Kentucky girl with good vocals. Her rendition of of the Broken Hearted is beautiful
Holy crap what a voice and talk about a. Tight Band unbelievable and I'm 70 years old.

I agree! Her voice is phenomenal!
TRUE talent for sure!❤
Joan does not need fancy costumes or a huge group as backup, She stands and delivers.
Yes, she does. No one is so great they don’t need to dress for the job. She looks like a soccer mom. Yuck.
Absolutely ❤

What a kind comment! You are a real Gentleman.
Stax house band and the Muscle Shoals house band were also wonderful. They're my top Four.
Perfectly put.

When ever I play Joan's songs. I am overcome with a level of bliss saved for the angels.

Thats Joan Osborne. Remember the song- What If God Was One of Us-? Thats her. She got soul down to her toes! ❤❤❤
Funk brothers and the wrecking crew belong in the rock and roll Hall of fame.
*She's great. The Band, is great. Thanks Uploader.*
Joan is not only very beautiful but also exceptionally talented the girl got serious soul

She nailed this Hit by Marvin Gaye. She has heart and soul. Makes me want to get up and dance!
She did a fabulous job on "Heat Wave" and "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted" in the movie Standing In The Shadows of Motown.

This girl can really singgggggggh !!!!!!!!!!!

Not all true. Look in to Grace Potter, Leon Russel, Nathanael Radecliff, St. Paul and the Broken Bones. They can bring it.
@@michaelwinn2508 I discovered Grace Potter recently and I wholeheartedly agree.
Michael Winn
Isn’t Leon Russell old school.
Or are you referring to another?
Melisma and acrobatics have destroyed some perfectly good songs. This girl just sings the damn thing.
Joan, you're the one and only!! No one and I mean , no one can make me feel like I'm feeling it with you...thank you, darling..m
I was there in the audience that night;. One of the most memorable concert i've been to.
