My favorite clip of the documentary!! The way they break that down sounds so good! Funk Brothers for Life! There’ll never be another house band like them.
THE TAMBOURINE IS MY FAVORITE INSTRUMENT IN ANY MOTOWN SONG. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT BROUGHT TOO THE SONG, BUT IT MADE A HUGE IMPACT. YOU CANT IMAGINE THE MOTOWN SOUND WITHOUT IT.
Man thats great stuff. The singers may be singing, the producer may be producing, but doggone it, its the musicians that give life to the music. Its the musicians that get those people out on the dance floor, its the musicians that put the songs on the charts. The Bass, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, tambourine, drums, piano, percussion...they get that groove goin' and the Funk Bros are the best I've ever heard.
It's amazing how unbelievably basic each individual instrument's part is, but played with so much soul and so seamlessly blended it creates SOOOOO much groove.
The main ingredient to the Funk Brothers success, was chemistry! The way treated and trusted each other when it was time to practice and perform! This cannot be duplicated on this level! Iconic ☺️😊🙂😉!
1:12 Oh man - This is the fuckin' brilliant MAGIC of MOTOWN! Seems to be so simple but it's just so much more! I'm deeply in love with this stuff! Long live the heritage of THE FUNK BROTHERS!
wow.. just wow. the happiness son their faces when their playing just lights up my soul. Your work has finally been credited, and we thank you for setting such a great foundation of r&b and soul music! thank you brothers!
These guys are just too good! Amazing musicians and they could even make the tambourine rock like a mother!! Can't believe, though, that there are 5 miserable, joyless, soulless idiots out there who voted down this great clip of the legendary Funk Brothers showing how those great Motown tracks were put together.
I believe I have your answer, the music of today is not uplifting, so if that is all you hear this happy sound is foreign to to your ear! These guys have been playing for 50+ years and having a good time doing it! By the way, I'll never forgive Barry Gordy for leaving Detroit!
There will never be another group of musicians and songwriters and arrangers who could produce that level of musical energy and excitement. A lot of it was to do with how the Fender bass transformed jazz feel and created a new kind of playing that is unequalled. They lifted those simple drum grooves.Don't forget the Church, That's where it's STILL coming from
If close (or even far) you MUST visit the Motown Museum in Detroit. To stand in the "snakepit" and let your imagination go is an experience every Motown music lover should not miss.
And Booker T and The MG's(Booker T, Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn, and Al Jackson Jr.), Otis' original backing band with The Mar-Keys. They were the band that played at The Monterey Pop Festival with Otis. The Funk Bros, The MG's, The Mar-Keys, and The Bar-Kays were something, and don't forget The Wrecking Crew!
Wish they woulda got some better singers for some of these performances. Not theat these people were bad but Ben Harper doesnt have anywhere near the voice that David ruffin had. Just doesnt do the song justice. The Funk Brothers still got it though!!!

you can just look at the smiles on their faces, and see how much they loved each other. everytime i watch the documentary, i cry like a baby.
tranurse thats cos you have soul my friend ! Its such a poignant movie ,
Soooooooo tight. Easily the most underappreciated band of all time hands down
THE TAMBOURINE IS MY FAVORITE INSTRUMENT IN ANY MOTOWN SONG. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT BROUGHT TOO THE SONG, BUT IT MADE A HUGE IMPACT. YOU CANT IMAGINE THE MOTOWN SOUND WITHOUT IT.
Yes, indeed! Tambourine and vibraphone! :)

Once it gets going, you just don't want it to stop....the best of an era that I wish still existed!
There it is! The Motown Sound! Wish that sound was still used today!
Never knew about the Funk brothers until yesterday. Saw a bio movie about them. They "were" the SOUND of Motown behind the singers. Timelss talent!!
Their happiness in playing makes me so happy.

LOVE THIS CLIP! NOTHING LIKE THE FUNK BROTHERS!

Long live the heritage of THE FUNK BROTHERS!
The funk brothers the magic behind motown awesome!
Jack Ashford can _work_ a tambourine! In his hands, it's not just something you shake, it's an instrument. God bless the Funk Bros, past and present!
I've owned this movie for many rears and I keep coming back to it when ever I need a lift in my life.It always does the trick. A Great movie!
The guys who start it all💋❤️🙏
Shit that tambourine work is amazing
I know right? These guys could probably play like this on their deathbeds, coolest cats ever
Agree to the best tambourine player ever. Our beloved "Mr. Tambourine Man" Jack Ashford. Wonderful man and musician. Thanks for the post.

You don't see true musicians like these guys today.

The greatest music in the world
The Funk Brothers..The only doctors you'll ever need. Feel better ? !!
This is music! What I don't understand is why today's black music lacks soul. These guys have soul! Thanks for posting!

lol I had no idea a tambourine could be played so cool. As much as I have been in church I still never knew till I watch this.
Holland Dozier Holland plus Funk brothers = magic
Wow.
LOL it was the wood in the floor, no it was the producers, no it was the singers, no it was the food.
NO, it was the MUSICIANS! GO FUNK BROTHERS!!!
if Jack Stratton sent you here, the tambourine fill is at 1:47
This is music nothing like today. Well never have this again
Oh no you didn't! Could not imagine the level of musical magic with that pairing. And the Bar-Kays were fierce as well. Otis was something.
And Booker T and The MG's(Booker T, Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn, and Al Jackson Jr.), Otis' original backing band with The Mar-Keys. @sgtpepper1138 Don't forget the MG's
I wish Otis Redding could have recorded with these guys.
Wish they woulda got some better singers for some of these performances. Not theat these people were bad but Ben Harper doesnt have anywhere near the voice that David ruffin had. Just doesnt do the song justice. The Funk Brothers still got it though!!!
Why does BBC 4 get all the best musicians?
@skipper8257 Them and The Wrecking Crew.
That's all you have to do...
sadly only one left is Mr Joe
Jack is still alive.
@@ckrein414 yes you are right my bad although i don't know if he played on this recording i do know Joe did, Pretty sure
Tommy Walsh sure plays a mean bass 1:23 .It's good to see he found some work after Ground Force finished.
the Funks could make Mickey Mouse sound good. so sad that almost everyone is now gone
Why in the world do you need two drummers murking this up for?
