Hearing this song for the first time, on the radio, was like a religious experience for me. I had just landed in Medford, Oregon, and was driving my rental car from the airport towards my hotel. I channel-surfed the radio for a few minutes until I found a likable radio station... within a few minutes, this song came on. I was choked up, tears in my eyes.... this song resonated in my spirit like an epiphany.... I forgot about going to the hotel and drove instead to the nearest record store I could find, and bought Joan's album on cassette. I still listen to the song regularly, 30 years later, and it still gives me goosebumps.

Listening to this song now at 46 takes me back over 25 years ago to my college days. Haven't heard it in years and it most definitely hits different as a grown woman who has experienced more trauma in my life than I could have imagined in my worst nightmares. This song helped me along the way. I'm stronger now, and grateful more than I ever was before.
I used to listened this before going to school while my Papa braided my hair. I was at 4 or 5 grade of elementary school that time. Now, it's been 2 months my Papa had gone since he lost the battle through Covid on Friday, July 9th, 2021. This song brings so much memories of my childhood and it becomes one of souvenirs that I can treasure to linger my bond with my Papa. Thank you so much Joan for making this MASTERPIECE. This was one of the songs we listened to in English class when I was in maybe 6th or 7th grade and it'll never not make me think of my absolutely amazing English teacher I had back then. Thanks for being such a cool teacher, Frau Kielmann ❤️
I'm not religious. As a kid this tune rang in my head vaguely years after I must have heard it...when I finally heard it one day on radio, I touched heaven.
Probably nobody's going to read this but I have to say it... Three day before my dad passed away, we were on the car, he was taking me to church when this song came along on the radio. He started singing it. He smiled at me and told me everything was going to be okay. I miss him so much. Only God knows when it's our time to leave. 01/10/21 8:15 p.m.
Lyrics: If God had a name what would it be? And would you call it to his face? If you were faced with Him in all His glory What would you ask if you had just one question? And yeah, yeah, God is great Yeah, yeah, God is good Yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah What if God was one of us? Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Tryin' to make his way home? If God had a face what would it look like? And would you want to see If seeing meant that you would have to believe In things like heaven and in Jesus and the Saints And all the prophets? And yeah, yeah, God is great Yeah, yeah, God is good Yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah What if God was one of us? Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Tryin' to make his way home? Just tryin' to make his way home Back up to heaven all alone Nobody callin' on the phone 'Cept for the Pope, maybe in Rome And yeah, yeah, God is great Yeah, yeah, God is good Yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah What if God was one of us? Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Tryin' to make his way home? Just tryin' to make his way home Like a holy rolling stone? Back up to heaven all alone Just tryin' to make his way home Nobody callin' on the phone 'Cept for the Pope maybe in Rome
I was singing the song in the shower today and I've this epiphany Jesus said - what you did to one of my lesser brothers, you did to Me. If you feed him, you feed Me. If you clothed him, you clothed Me. If you've visited him in prison, you've visited Me. If you didn't do any of these things to any of my lesser brothers, you didn't do it for Me. And i was singing this song and thought what does it really mean. And i thought that if i love somebody too much, his pain becomes my pain. Distance doesn't affect it. So what Jesus was saying is that He loves us and feels pain of each one of us as His own. Same as child's pain is a direct pain of his mother. So if we harm ANY human, we bring similar or even greater pain to God. Maybe it's one of the purposes of this world, to see God in each one of us, His love, His care, His glory and His hope.

A Great song Joan. God is one of us, & he's here with us, especially where one or two of us are gathered in His name; He certainly answered my prayer the next morning, on the doorstep. greetings from Australia.
Nothing is more heartwarming to me than the thought of sitting down on a bus, riding along and talking with a total stranger for 20 minutes. And then realized after he got off at his stop.......that I had been talking to God. No angels, no trumpets, no thunderous, commanding voice, just two Dudes on a bus, enjoying each others company.
This brought tears to my eyes 🥹 couldn’t even imagine how amazing that would be! Especially whenever He says “Yep, I know. I know all about that…I know you have been going through it…etc.” knowing He *truly* does know because He sees it all and is walking with us (sometimes carrying us) through it 💝

As many times as I heard it in the early days, it really never came off as sincere religious. I guess it was more the irony of what if God was actually one of us? Cool song in a stacked time of alternative music
@@timwest2539 you're right the fact that god is a human is a contradiction but I saw beyond the literal words and I saw the lobe the writer had for god that compelled him to write a song that depicts god in a simple way that anyone can relate to.

Somente escute a música e pense.
Joan used to live around the corner from me when I lived in Brooklyn. She was a frequent customer in my business. Very cool chick. I wish her well wherever she is.
Me and some friends did a show in high school wearing women clothes with this music in Brazil. It was successfully ...some years later I discovered the lyrics is about God. OMG , we did a blasphemy...
This song brings back great memories from the 90’s, cruising around Newburgh and Evansville IN with my BFF, Jenny, in her Mazda RX7 blaring the song and singing at the top of our lungs. Rest in Heaven. Jenny Rae Mitchell. 1975-2022❤

I have loved this song for years! As a Christian I feel happy that HE was (for a brief time) one of us and has actual "boots on the ground" insight into human nature that Satan never can have. Religiosity aside, it is a wonderful song!
Why did you capitalize "HE" ? How do we know if "HE's" not female. Or how about since he is the only god, why would be be one or the other? Wouldn't it make sense if he was non-binary? Like really non-binary. If he's the only one of his kind, what use would he have for a dick?

Growing up in the 90s I heard this song multiple times and it was just another song. almost 25+ years later. I just listen to it five minutes ago because the melody played in my head so I wanted to play it and I can just about agree with every single comment here. Listening to it now grown up and wiser, this song pulled out my heartstrings and made me tear up and still tearing up as I write this comment. Such an amazing beautiful song and I can appreciate now that I’m older.
I was in 7th grade when this was when this was popular and I distinctly remember many peers, even at that age, discussing and elaborating on the religious questions posed by the song. How exactly could you miss the piecing lyrics of the chorus and think it was just another song?????

Heard this song at work the other day and it brought back memories, couldn’t remember who sang it so I had to look it up. As I recall it was sort of a one hit wonder, also had some controversy from the Bible loving people claiming it was negatively talking about god. Probably haven’t heard this song since the late 90’s. I was 12 when this song came out in ‘95. Times were simpler back then, no social media, not many people, at least where I live, had cell phones. Kids still hung out with friends and spent most their time out playing or hanging out at the mall. The older I get the more I look back at those days and realize times were better back then. People were better back then in many ways too.
This song is like a letter from someone's mind that stated very well about what Gods existence is. A beautiful masterpiece. A next decade, this would still feel brand new. 💕

There were so many great female singer-songwriters in the 90s. Joan Osborne, Sarah Mclachan , Alanis Morrissette, Shawn Colvin, Sheryl Crow, Fiona Apple, Jewel, Meredith Brooks, Melissa Eithridge, the list goes on and on!

Sad that so many people don't realize that God did become one of us: John 1:14 New Living Translation 14 So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son. After having suffered and died to provide a way that we all could choose to be saved from judgment FOR FREE (Epesians 2:8-10)....though he won't be going home alone, his return is coming soon for all of us who chose to ACCEPT his FREE gift of salvation and listen only to him.

Same with me! It is such a great song and it truly does have a deeper impact on me the older I get! It does make a believer wonder though...Could God truly be down here on earth? Maybe He's your next door neighbour. Or maybe He IS that stranger on the bus, just trying to make His way home! Just thinking about the possibilities makes my fill with so much emotion.

I was singing the song in the shower today and I've this epiphany
Jesus said - what you did to one of my lesser brothers, you did to Me.
Which makes sense when he teached,"Treat others as how you want to be treated"
I'm going to say I was 21 after a body gard at mwc pool hall party my side arm Brian hatchel and Jason we was confronted buy a move or die so I drove us home way over the limit and made a safe understanding that never overlook a uncertain circumstance run and sit

Somente escute a música e pense.
❤
Chorei ❤
❤❤❤
Eu pediria pra ver minha mãe por 5 minutos e dizer o quanto sinto a falta dela 😢😢
Que preguiça de ler que dá 😅🙏

I have loved this song for years! As a Christian I feel happy that HE was (for a brief time) one of us and has actual "boots on the ground" insight into human nature that Satan never can have. Religiosity aside, it is a wonderful song!
Why did you capitalize "HE" ? How do we know if "HE's" not female. Or how about since he is the only god, why would be be one or the other? Wouldn't it make sense if he was non-binary? Like really non-binary. If he's the only one of his kind, what use would he have for a dick?

The 90s no words to explain it

Happy new year-90's was a great decade for music I agree at any rate I recommend a song called 'Where I Come From' By Robert Nix right here on youtube
Excellent@denice🦅🍺🍷

With this Jesus revelation that seems to be sweeping the planet at the moment, just goes to show how far ahead of things this girl is! ❤️🙏❤️
A internet mudou o mundo!!!

😅 Bons tempos...
I remember when this was a HUGE hit and played non-stop on MTV.

I'd be honored if some 90s fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal RUclips performances of IF GOD WAS ONE OF US by Joan Osborne and BITTERSWEET SYMPHONY by the Verve in tribute to 2 standards of the mid/late 90s era. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Peace out and stay safe in the '020s.
My friend and I, the first time we saw and heard this song .. we absolutely went on some kind of ride that I had never experienced and not since either. We we inside that video. Some would call it psychosis but it was just a trip to awarness.
Cheers for those good memories
I'll look into it dood !
This was played at the end of my beautiful sister's funeral last Fri.... She lost her brave fight with breast cancer.... May everyone of us listening to this... Live life.. Love everything.. Laugh hard. .. and have no regrets.. ❤️🙏😇 Xxx
My deepest sympathy for your loss and this was a great song to sing at the funeral. I was not a great fan of nineties music with the exception of this, Oasis and the Corrs which stand out in my opinion.😁🎸🎼🏴🏴
Woah, I lost my Mom to cancer too, in 1987.
Rosie Kane:
Your Sister was a Victor, I do not consider She lost the Battle, She passed away, but She is in Heaven now, Victorious waiting to see You again.
God bless..sorry for your loss.

This taught me to hope against hope, and for that I want to express my thankfulness.
I remember years ago riding the transit bus to work one morning when the driver played this song over the bus speaker system. Nobody said a word when the bus came to a stop. It was magical to say the least.
That sounds amazing
That’s a pretty awesome story!

This song from Joan Osborne never dies. I miss the '90s and the '80s back when music from my side of the past wasn't lame at all.
There's still decent music being made nowadays it's just that there's an INSANE amount being made, and in essence hard to get to the stuff you'd like.
Haha, there was a ton of the lamest music imaginable in the 80s and 90s! What we listen to now is the crème de la crème from the past.
Me too mate totally 😊😢❤
What a dinosaur! There’s tons of good new music. I love the 90s but I haven’t looked back. I haven’t listen to 90% of the music. I was so passionate about back then. Why isolate yourself in the past
Same when bands actually played instrumentals
There were so many great female singer-songwriters in the 90s. Joan Osborne, Sarah Mclachan , Alanis Morrissette, Shawn Colvin, Sheryl Crow, Fiona Apple, Jewel, Meredith Brooks, Melissa Eithridge, the list goes on and on!

Sad that so many people don't realize that God did become one of us:
John 1:14 New Living Translation
14 So the Word became human and made his home among us.

Lyrics
If God had a name what would it be?
And would you call it to his face?
If you were faced with Him in all His glory
What would you ask if you had just one question?
And yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
And yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah
What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Tryin' to make his way home?
If God had a face what would it look like?
And would you want to see if, seeing meant
That you would have to believe in things like heaven
And in Jesus and the saints, and all the prophets?
And yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
And yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah
What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Tryin' to make his way home?
Just tryin' to make his way home
Like back up to heaven all alone
Nobody callin' on the phone
'Cept for the Pope maybe in Rome
And yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
And yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah
What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Tryin' to make his way home?
Just tryin' to make his way home
Like a holy rolling stone
Back up to heaven all alone
Just tryin' to make his way home
Nobody callin' on the phone
'Cept for the Pope maybe in Rome

Right. It's so relevant.
How amazing and life-changing it would be if we were to actually know (and meet Him) that He was/is here on earth, just blending in with every one of his children. ❤🙏❤
