I am going to tell you what I know, not what I heard. JOAN OSBORNE is the best non-Motown vocalist I have ever heard sing MOTOWN. Joan has the soul, tempo, rhythm and emotion of the music. Joan was born to sing MOTOWN.
I didnt know her until this doc...think I saw it around 2004.....I've collected her entire catalog and caught most of her live performances available on RUclips. Her voice knocks me out and YES when singing Motown she's amazing
This Movie should actually be shown in every school of the country. It's a part of US history and heritage, and one big part because this music has done more for the cultural expansion of the US than any other things.... and Joan is SO beautiful here...
My boyfriend his a music teacher in Montreal Quebec since more of 25 years and he shown each year this documentary to his students. Really inspiring, I love too the part with Chaka Khan and what’s going on 😊
Martha and the Vandellas owned it. Joan Osborne owned it. Just goes to show how fantastic this song and the band was. One of those feel good songs for all time!
The Documentary was superb and so was the Talent included. It doesn't get any better than that. Joan and the group still make my eyes water even after watching the clip for years.
bob babbitt on the bass gets DOWN during the sax solo!! this whole lineup rips and joan def holds her own!! STILL awesome even after watching the clip for 4 more years LOL
I kept seeing the tape in truckstops several years ago and one night I thought I'd buy it. Glad I did and so was my wife as we were born in the mid 1950's and this is the music we grew up to. I've collected CDs through the years and I have them on my phone's Micro SD Card. Whenever I go walking, working around the house I listen to music from the 1930's to the 1980's. Some people are surprised that I still dance since I've had a heart attack and bypass surgery. I'm not dead yet. Dancing is just another form of exercise...
60's Motown! Such happy, joyful music! No wonder everybody thinks today's music is crap! It IS crap compared to this! I was lucky enough to have grown up during this time, and I can tell you all this - giants walked the Earth in those days!
Look at the way Joan hangs with the band before she moves out to sing, the way that she grooves with them before she goes out. Watch how so many smile throughout the performance of the song. See the utter joy going on.
@@anitathompson9360 Just think how the Funk Brothers rolled out wonderful music week after week. Not receiving any royalties or recognition. At least they are being acknowledged now. MOTOWN was a selfish company.
Absolutely! Smiles all over the place that's what happens when a group of you are, As Stevie Wonder puts it in the groove and everyone is clicking. It is so much fun.
I saw this documentary years ago but whenever I go back and watch this clip I get overcome with emotions. I miss those days, my family, my friends, the beauty of living.
best of the 60's was Motown and perhaps the most talented girl groups ever! the musicians were just unbelievable - the songwriters are well known and icons - but for any unsung contributors ...thank you ! Your music will live on....for every generation to follow and try to compete!
I wish that all of the other Funk Brothers would have still been alive to be able to see how much they are truly loved. Those brothers are the true American Treasure in music history.
She was so humble listening to the men describe the history behind the studio band, and their collaborations with so many other Motown greats. When she performed Heatwave with them, she honored them, and Martha and the Vandellas.
Simply a classic. 31 people don't appreciate the fact that the original Motown band along with Joan are reproducing such an amazing classic song but that's ok because over 1400 do appreciate this song. Long live old school classics!!!!!!!
Gleeful rendition of a classic. Watch as the band lights up when Joan approaches the mic and sings. Hear the crowd react and cheer then. Watch Mr. Babbit concentrate while he digs in and plays bass so impeccably. Watch pops grin while he drums. Watch the background singers smile as they perform. This is sheer and utter happiness.
When a solid gold magnificent hit is made in a studio after many takes that’s one thing. But when one is made live on stage with zero takes like this one it’s absolutely majestic.
I played in the cincinnati area with a Motown cover band, and I loved every minute of it, To hear Joan with the Funk Brothers sent chills up and down my spine. Herd voice anong with that song rivals anyone including the original. I dis like cover songs by most groups but she did that song with such heart and soul I have absolutely no problem with that. Together her and the band worked magic that night. My hats off to them.
Everyone has their favourite version of "Heatwave" - mine is The Liverbirds (an all-female group from Liverpool who did most of their stuff in Germany) version back in the mid-60s. But this live version by Joan is a great one as well, from a great movie.
That is the absolute magic that happens when you put a group of brilliant musicians and singers on stage with a great song... Love Joan's rendition, beautiful. Totally groovin' out to this :-)
Just saw the doc tonight. Blown away enough to come over here and keep playing her and Gerald's and the rest of the gang's rendition. They nailed them ! Long live THE Funk Brother's. The reason Motown was what it was.
Amen. His playing on this track is as good as it gets. Such incredible groove. James Jamerson deserved all the credit he got but Bob was his equal. May both of them rest in peace. James
The best version of this song was not Martha Reeves but Jimmy Ruffin, David Ruffin's brother. I think that is the version that Joan Osborn sang from....and she nailed it. I LOVE her version. Almost perfect singing!
The Funk Brothers recorded on and produced more hits than Elvis and the Beatles combined. They never got the recognition they deserved. God Bless them!
***** Sorry sir, but I am a professional musician and know the facts of the number of hits. You seem to already know the answer, so I won't waste anymore time on the subject. Not really a troll either, but I respect others opinions. You apparently aren't a musician and that's alright. There are more people that aren't musicians than are. Was just stating a fact and not trying to take any recognition from Elvis or the Beatles. They deserve the recognition and fame for what they contributed. Have a good day!
***** It is a fact. It's actually stated in the documentary. Also you can research it on the web. I somehow get the feeling you want me to prove it to you, but won't really ask me to. Just ask for proof and I will provide it. I figured by now you would have submitted proof of your own. Have a good day!
***** So, what does it take to be great compared to good in your opinion. Like I say, you are entitled to your opinion, which is as different as a musicians level of play! Actually they had more than one guitar player!
BEYOND phenomenal. This is a great documentary, and this is a fabulous arrangement and performance of this classic. This lady has a tremendous voice! These musicians are beyond words. Now, what other great big adjectives can I use to explain how much I love this ... ?
WOW !! Where has she been all my life? Or where have I been? First ran into her six or seven years ago when I happened to hear "One Of Us" on the radio. That song brought me here and HOLY SHIT !!! Martha Reeves would be proud!
Everybody talks about the "Motown Sound" ", but essentially, the Motown sound was what happened when those people sat down and played together. And Joan Osborne did it no shame at ALL. : )
It's funny how an old R&B standard song can really show what the singer has. This version made me grin from ear to ear! Thanks so much for posting this! And Joan, keep on doin exactly what you're doin cause it's workin!!!! ☺
Outstanding, Oh, and the bass guitarist is excellent hitting those bass notes with perfection and keeping perfect timing for the other great musicians.
I agree. I own the "Standing in the Shadows" documentary and I honestly don't even remember any of the other performances. But both of Joan Osbournes's performances require repeat viewings. Brilliant!
I remember hating her music when she first came on to the scene, then she grew on me, and I liked her. I picked up this DVD and I was blown away, just BLOWN AWAY by her powerful and passionate vocals. Her performance was flawless and made me LOVE her and appreciate her so much more. I am glad that The Funk Brothers had her singing this.
I saw STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF LOVE in the movie theater in NY when it was released and was florred by the performances, especially Joan Osborne! I picked up the soundtrack on cd, but, was really impressed by the DVD w/the DTS encoding! Everything came forward with more IMPACT! Great for listening to musis played LIVE!
I agree with huff21960 and PatentRob that - in my humble opinion, of course - Joan Osborne's version of "Heatwave" does the original proud and that it is one of the best performances of a Motown song by a non-Motown vocalist. It completele blew me away when I watched and listened to "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" for the first time and it still gives me goosebumps every time I see and hear it. Thanks for sharing this magnificent video so that other people can also enjoy this gem!
This is perfect. I can't stop watching it with a smile on my face. My god, this is as god as it gets. Joan is perfect....and the band with this groove....i'm in heaven.
The horns are fantastic! Sometimes I stare in space tears all over my face, I can't explain it, Don't understand it. I ain't never felt like this before.
What a terrible shame that we didn't have more exposure to this woman and her incredible voice and the fact that the funk brothers were virtually unknown in. The industry is another shame because that's an era that will never be repeated in this country. Those men were absolutely phenomenal. And all they did was entertain us. To them it was just playing music and jamming together as a group but to us that lived it. It's something we carried through out our lives. I would give anything to go back and do it again. God bless all you've people for what you gave us.

I love her madly bro!!!
I didnt know her until this doc...think I saw it around 2004.....I've collected her entire catalog and caught most of her live performances available on RUclips. Her voice knocks me out and YES when singing Motown she's amazing
she's very versatile too. She can sing straight pop like her song "One Of Us". I even heard her sing with the Grateful Dead once.
This Movie should actually be shown in every school of the country. It's a part of US history and heritage, and one big part because this music has done more for the cultural expansion of the US than any other things.... and Joan is SO beautiful here...

No studio takes. No do overs. All live. And just superb.
Amen to that brother!
This woman’s vocals are phenomenal
❤❤❤❤❤
Martha and the Vandellas owned it. Joan Osborne owned it. Just goes to show how fantastic this song and the band was. One of those feel good songs for all time!
Linda Ronstadt owned it as well. Her version is right up there with the two mentioned above.
Good lord that girl can sing.
This Chica is Awesome!!!!! Great Song!!!! Great Band!!!!! I'm 70 still Rock n Roll!!!!!
Nothing for 25 years then Joan o comes back with 3 awesome remakes!!
I love the older black man playing the drums. He's definitely enjoying this 60's music, rocking out to the max.
His name was Richard "Pistol" Allen. And yes he could play the hell out of those drums 🥁
Great Music, Great Movie, Great Story,,, American Culture and History, recommend it to anyone who thinks they are a complete Musician!!!!
The Documentary was superb and so was the Talent included. It doesn't get any better than that. Joan and the group still make my eyes water even after watching the clip for years.
What is the name of the documentary?
I want to watch and save the whole thang(😎thing).

Joan Osborne and the funk brothers, Absolute Heaven,

There's not many artists outside Motown I would give any credence doing these songs but I personally think Joan nails this one - well done!
She was so humble listening to the men describe the history behind the studio band, and their collaborations with so many other Motown greats. When she performed Heatwave with them, she honored them, and Martha and the Vandellas.
