What's Going On is the most personal protest song I've ever heard. It's like Marvin Gaye sent a message straight to our souls. Chaka did great justice to this song! It makes my eyes fill with tears when I think of how many of the Funk Brothers are gone now. There will NEVER be another assembly of musicians like them.
This is an incredible performance, both by Chaka Khan and The Funk Brothers. What an amazing group of musicians. And they were all able to capture the true essence of What's Going On.
They played on more hits, and sold more records than in the history of the World! And hardly anyone even knew their names. What an absloute tradgedy. They were, and are amazing an inspirational. Nobody ever said anything in this life was fair..I just pray that they somehow get their due..They molded history.
I'm am from South Africa and the same happened in our homes. Motown had no boundaries. Wherever it was played it brought magic. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and making those memories even more vivid.
Since the documentary Standing in the Shadows of Motown, we've lost 5 of the original Funk Brothers: Richard "Pistol" Allen, 2002, Johnny Griffith, 2002, Joe Hunter, 2007, Uriel Jones, 2009, and Bob Babbitt, 2012. THE GREATEST HIT MACHINE IN MUSIC HISTORY.
A Memorable Classic, so well done by the ONE and ONLY, Ms. Chaka Khan herself no one else could ever do it better......R.I.P....The late legendary, Mr. Marvin Gaye.
Her voice is so smooth. What struck me the first time I saw the video is how effortless her singing is, even when she is scatting. The Funk Brothers - they had it going like no other group of musicians I can think of. Thanks Motown for all the great music.
Three of these guys have passed since making this film. Pistol Allen, Johnny Griffith, Uriel Jones- all gone now. Most of the Funk Brothers are now part of history. Thanks Alan "Dr. Licks" Slutsky for finally getting them some well deserved recognition.
I have the VHS tape and DVD and have watched the whole thing many, many times. Closest thing to a time machine. Though "What's Going On" was performed a bit fast for me, it is still as good as it gets. Superb Vocals, and what can you say about the Funk Brothers? The Quality and smoothness is almost beyond imagination. Babbit playing that Jamerson bass line as close as could be at almost twice speed.
I'm from Detroit, grew up in the 60's. Can't listen to this intro without having a rush of emotion. " THE GREATEST HIT MACHINE IN MUSIC HISTORY, THE FUNK BROTHERS!!!!"
Just watched Standing in the Shadows of Motown. Amazing musicians! Great to see that The Funk Brothers recently got their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Shame it wasn't back in the 60's though.
quite simply, this is what you do not see enough of in today's music? who's ever gonna dispute the greatness of the funk bros?....this is music babyeee they way it was meant to be heard
When I first saw the video Standing In the Shadows of Motown, Chaka's performance along with Joan Osborne's just stood out. What a wonderful tribute to the great band and its members.
Standing in the Shadows of Motown waas the first movie I ever saw that the entire audience applauded and did not leave until the credits stopped rolling. Beautiful experience!! Don't miss it!
Standing in the Shadows of Motown is a great video, a must see for any music lover. James Jamerson is the greatest bass player of all time, and Babbitt did a great job filling in. Just wanted to see more of him playing it in the vid, instead of the constant shot of the xylophone. Great vocals by Chaka, tough to take on such an iconic classic and not get slammed for it.
I'm 18 and it does the same thing for me. I love Motown. Comparing these beautiful pieces to today's music makes me want to cry. The love is gone, and there's no passion for the craft.
Until the PBS special I never knew the debt of their legacy. Let's support PBS and others who put this kind of wonderful history out there...Thanks for the post. By the way I bought the dvd and it is a great to have on in the background while company is over. It can lead to a great conversation. Enjoy.
She is so smooth .. She just climbs up and down the vocal scale effortless low register to tree tops and beyond.. When a band someone like that they just flow .. This just take you on a journey and beyond.. LB 2022
I went to see Standing In The Shadows of Motown at the cinema. The story is remarkable; inspirational and almost heart-breaking at the same time. The music has changed the musical landscape. So wonderful that the remaining Funk Brothers had this moment. There is something about this moment that is transcendental. Marvin song with Chaka's performance here is from somewhere else ...and I've got pretty much every album of hers ...I've watched hundreds of videos and seen her in concert around 5 times. I remember watching it in the cinema and when she started the improvs being transported somewhere else. I went home and in my dreams the song and performance were being replayed. This moment and everyone involved in it from Marvin's original, the Funk Brothers, the backing vocalists, the use of film archive and the breathtaking magic that Chaka brings to it. One of my favourite musical moments and one of the most special video clips on RUclips I've ever seen.
I own the DVD and it's fantastic! All I ever wanted to be was Funk Brother. One of the greatest bands in the world! I grew up on Motown and pretty much have the sound of Motown flowing through my veins and I feel lucky as hell to be able to say that. Peace.
Absolutely superb performance from all the great musicians and of course Chaka, fabulous interpretation of a great classic.. The Funk Brothers never really got the true credit for what they did back in the day, that makes me sad. Remember what it was like in the 60s when we first heard Motown in the UK, such an exiting time.
Yes, that was a very moving part of this film. And you are correct in that these talented musicians were deserving of more recognition than what they got. But at least music fans in the UK knew what was up!
That's Fantastic! I never new that. Its the most coolest clip Ive seen in ages,The boys are just jamin and crusin and the guy"s at the back are swayin and sounding so deep and choice. I just drawl watching the horniest voice in the world do what she does to that song.God she's Ahhhhh ! ChaKa.And what she does on her albuim with Michael Jackson's " Gotta Be There " when she's in full song there ! It's just --- Horn .....
The introductions that paid hommage to the late members was the classiest! And the hook to "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" really had me feeling some kind of awesome way!
Watching this video is a learning experience for me personally, we've come a long way - those musicians were outstanding and very talented. As for Chaka Khan, as usual her performance is uncomparable. The point is, she's singing this song with power all while she is sitting down. Thats how you sing a song!
OH MY GOSh - an airliner could crash into my goosebumps right now!!!! This was THE sound of my later youth - LONG LIVE SOUL music!! I love how the inaugural dance was danced to Etta James singing 'AT LAST'!!!!!!! Thank you and much respect for the upload.
This had to be Chaka's greatest performance. I remember watching this years ago, it was when I became a Chaka fan. If I remember correctly she won an award for this.
The Funk Brothers & What's Going On is one of those pieces of music that you never get tired of listening to. So I just want to thank the legendary Funk Brothers for giving us some of the best sounds from Detroit.
Every now and then on You Tube, up pops a video/clip that simply takes your breath away. Chaka Khan and the fabulous Funk Bros are certainly up there with the best - what a fabulous performance, great vocals, immortal song, brilliant rhythms, superb bass line and beautifully produced and classic arrangement ! This is just pure magic - music at its best !! … THAT'S What's Going On !!
My hair stands up and tears come to my ears when I see and listen to this. It doesn't get any better than this. I am in awe of Jamerson's basslines. Thank you Bob, Chaka. I want this played at my funeral if I can afford one.
Chaka is a straight up horn by time she hits her groove from midway in this song! And glad to see the Marvelous Funk Bros enjoying themselves, while getting that much needed acknowledgement and recognition for their immense, if not overlooked contributions.
This brought me to tears of praise watching and listening to Chaka Khan backed up by the Funk Brothers, the original funk soldiers! Thank you for sharing this video. Date October 1, 2016
RIP Mr. Babbit. I had heard of (and worshipped) Jamerson for years, but had never heard of his 'replacement' - Babbit. The movie this is from is fantastic!
so, this was a pretty emotional clip for me. i was blessed to have johnny griffeth as a teacher in high school and i got to play with joe messina as a young player just getting started. i really had no idea until much later in life the magnitude of players that i was surrounded by, the education i was receiving without knowing it and the sheer joy that this group of individuals brought to so many people...musicians or not!

Merci d'avoir posté cette vidéo ! J'ai le DVD, parfois quand ça va pas je me le mets et je sais pourquoi je fais de la musique !! Des musiciens extraordinaires !
Such a poignant song for all times! Great track with Chaka singing and the musicians capturing the sound of Motown. My idol, Jaco Pastorius, tipped his hat to James Jamerson as an influence on his style.
What's Going On is the most personal protest song I've ever heard. It's like Marvin Gaye sent a message straight to our souls. Chaka did great justice to this song!
It makes my eyes fill with tears when I think of how many of the Funk Brothers are gone now. There will NEVER be another assembly of musicians like them.
love Chaka!!!!! she's so beautiful!
la meilleure version de cette chanson...
peut-être même meilleure que l'original!!!!!
Quelle voie.
Is there any song this woman can't sing? Chaka is AWESOME!!!!
FACTS!!!
BEAUTIFUL. Magnificent live outing by Chaka Khan and the Funk Brothers. No modern performers are even in the same galaxy.
she is one of the all-time greats if not the greatest female singer/performer ever to grace us
Bravissima....la sua voce è meravigliosa🥰🥰
The best cover I have ever heard of a marvin gaye song, chaka kicked it bigstyle
I believe Chaka and the Funk Bros. won a well deserved Grammy for this.
I LOVE CHAKA, She is EVERY Woman
A fantastic cover..the funk brothers made it sound so tight and fresh and Chaka did it in her own chakaresque.. funky way. A excellent version
Awesome Chaka and the band, great souls and music quality - the perfect match
THE FUNK BROTHERS!!!!!!!!!! There would not have been a Motown as great as it was without them. That's real!
This is an incredible performance, both by Chaka Khan and The Funk Brothers. What an amazing group of musicians. And they were all able to capture the true essence of What's Going On.
She´s the Queen of Funk !!!
each Song what is left her lips become funky ! Love you Chaka
I am speechless that is a first great great...........

Chaka Khan is MY BABY !!!
The greats...all under one roof.
never heard a better version - other than Marvin's. Just great and a tribute to the fantastic group who played on the greatest soul hits of all time!
absolutely killer!
it is difficult to think of words which would adequately describe the incredible talent of this woman
The best at their best . Chaka Khan is just GREAT!!! And I love the Funk Brothers. Great video
JAMES JAMERSON = GENIUS & BASS GOD....thats all u need to know
the funk brothers are truly the most amazing recorded studio musicians ever
No words can describe how wonderful this version is
I like how she put in her own kind of spin/rendition of this song rather than singing it the way that Marvin Gaye did.
Chaka should travel to all jazz schools to demo skat!! What a voice!

the Worlds best song played by the best band ever! I have heard so many versions of this one - but this gotta be one of theee best.
I think Chaka and the Band won an award for this piece

we will never again know or hear REAL music like this from REAL MUSICIANS WHO LOVED THEIR ART..it's gone forever like a 1959 CADILLAC COUPE DE VILLE

I had no idea she could sing like that - just remember her from those 80s pop songs. The band sounds great - Awesome!
Hey Pete
Check out this Jazz concert of her in 2005 at the Bluenote in NYC

I was surprised to see that Bob Babbit has passed. I agree this is the best intro I've seen and love this part of the Funk Brothers documentary.
Chaka is a straight up horn by time she hits her groove from midway in this song!

Perfection! She is simply divine.
That was indeed a treat. Thank you for posting.
Such a poignant song for all times! Great track with Chaka singing and the musicians capturing the sound of Motown. My idol, Jaco Pastorius, tipped his hat to James Jamerson as an influence on his style.
Damn Chaka can sing like no other. She always manages to make it her own.
Love Chaka Khan, she does not get her due as one of the greatest singers.
You must get the dvd in the shadow of Motown. There is more talent on that stage than today
Respect to the great and outstanding Marvelous Marvin Gaye plus the Funk Brothers and the irreplaceable Chaka Kahn.
wow,an awesome performance
