- UK TV documentary. Dr Matthew Sweet explores the history of a seaside institution - including its frequent appearance in divorce cases, the cross-dressing Colonel Victor Barker, and the horrors of the IRA bomb. A daring structure when opened in 1864, it included one of the very first elevators in the UK. First shown in 2005.
I like how he describes the people going to Brighton as hedonists. If you've ever been to the coast and seen beaches with actual sand and sunshine you would know that an English beach is more of an endurance test than a act of unalloyed pleasure.
Speaking of act, do you say a apple too?
The beach doesn't have any sand. Omg
Great memories here, watched the Solar Eclipse in Aug 1999 was only 24 years old. lovely building
Very interesting program! Thanks for sharing!
That was my Rolls Royce pictured at the front featuring in the brochure for many years.
I was sitting in chauffeur uniform for 4 hours while the photographer tried to achieve the desired picture.
When all was finished the manager said to go into the hotel and have whatever you like even full afternoon tea!
what year was that?
One Agency Darren Musgrave when he woke up 😏
Buildings like this should be preserved.
I was a first year student from Abroad, studying at what is now the University of Brighton that year. After the days studies I went to a discotheque called the pink Coconut right close to the beach . It was a beautiful Friday night and the club was packed .Dressed in a black suit with white shirt and bow tie I wanted to think I looked cool! My friend and I met a couple of girls and left the club at 2.00 am in the morning with them . We stopped at a Turkish Donner kebab place , picked up a wrap each and headed down to the beach where we sat facing a well lit building ..The Grand hotel! At 3.00 am or so while we were "necking" , the bomb went off and shrapnel flew around! Within minutes siren and mayhem began !! I remember that some revelers had set a bonfire on the beach and the "bobbies " were all over them ..!!
A year or two later I took my then girl friend for dinner on her birthday ! I did not know I need a jacket to dine at that fine establishment but discreetly the maitre d' guided me to a wardrobe and found me a Jacket and the evening was saved! It cost me 50 quid plus tip in 1986 money! lol
The IRA again bombed malls and other public areas ..ruthlessly , I might add! After that I started seeing more police with guns!
Love the aesthetics and all but love to see some wood showing, love wood tones.
A beautiful hotel . I first visited this in the summer off 1988 where i ordered a pot of tea . I have been in there since but never stayed in there as yet ? ❤❤❤

Remember staying a special night in the early seventies - breakfast was epic!
I DREAM of staying here! Hopefully for a Birthday trip to England when it is safe to travel once again!
6:35 "...lettuce munching..." Whaaat? lmfao
I was at a party the night it blew up in regency sq we watched the emergency services pulling people out.but what really puzzled me was that they handed out rebuilding contracts to Irish building contractors their billboards were plastered all over it .go figure that out.
Glad I can say I stayed here and on my company's expense too! 😊
got chucked out of there in 76 , we had gate crashed a military arms fair, should have seen the looks on their faces , we some how entered unnoticed by the security , we were just kids back then
I want to work here! it's sooo grand! ❤️
I was still in care in slough when the bomb went off
Think the hotel is more than a Grand. I do expect the carpet is at least £1.600 😅
Did Tommy Cooper leave you that suit in his will? Great show though, thank you .
Lived in Brighton & Hove all my life.

It’s the only one to fit his shaggy attitude.

The way they explain away the Muslim palace is laughable, the BLUE plaques and many domes Suggest a heavy Islamic presence in Brighton if you look closely.
Ps I have no Islamic background at all 🤷🏽♂️👍🏾
