- BBC News Special I produced and directed on the police investigation that led to the capture of Patrick Magee: the man responsible for the Brighton Bomb. On 12 October 1984, Magee made an audacious attempt to kill Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her cabinet by exploding a bomb at the Grand Hotel in Brighton during the Conservative Party Conference. The Prime Minister was unharmed but five people were killed in the attack and many more injured.
Broadcast on BBC1 in June 1986, around the time Magee and his accomplices were convicted of the Brighton Bomb and plotting another IRA mainland bombing campaign in 1985 when they were captured at a hideout in Glasgow in June of that year.
BBC Home Affairs correspondent Bill Hamilton reports in one of my first current affairs documentaries.

All the violence, anguish, chaos, fear and destruction that was continuous up to 1998, when there was a peace deal on the table in 1974..makes you wonder. But the main thing is to prevent a return to anything resembling those days again.

Excellent documentary thanks for the upload, I was 11 yrs old when Brighton happened which was talked extensively at school, I had a few Catholic friends but they hated the IRA, today the conversation is about Muslims...how times have changed.

Enjoyed that history. Thanks. I was at University when that happened. I remember Norman Tebbit in his PJs getting stretchered out of the hotel. I did not like him much at the time but I felt great pity for him that day. There were some scumbags laughing at him. I could not understand their lack of empathy to another human being who was obviously in great pain!
It was a dreadful attack, indeed! But my thinking is, it was a statement to what they can manage! Very scary! Very, very scary indeed! Very!

I most certainly was no fan of Margaret Thatcher, she was a cold, arrogant and humourless woman who never did Scotland any good, but I am nevertheless completely against what the IRA did in Brighton. It's also absurd to say she murdered Bobby Sands. How can someone who chose to starve himself to death be a murder victim? A statement that goes against logic and rationality.
After this, my dad became part of an elite team of Anti terrorism police, and he and his best friend were personally responsible for the safety of Margaret Thatcher. When my dad passed away, this year, pictures were shown of his time in the Army, when he first joined the police, when he was on anti terrorism and we actually had a photo of dad, at chequers with baroness Thatcher, in the photo. It was a fantastic photo and made me even more proud of my dad.
I hardly ever saw my dad during those years. He was constantly on call, and as soon as my dad knew that Baroness Thatcher was in the area, he had to drop everything and get to Chequers.
I will tell you a funny story about one time he went to chequers. When he got there, he had to get all his kit on, and wait for her arrival. His gun was loaded and they also had to have a spare clip of rounds.
Suddenly dad got up, and searched everywhere for his round clip but couldn’t find it anywhere. They spent an hour looking for that round, before dad remembered that actually he had left them in the safe. That was typical of my dad, he was always losing stuff. Luckily no harm was done. That was the day my dad and his best friend (along with other officers in the elite team) had their photography taken with baroness Thatcher.
It really was a tough time then, with all the home grown terrorism. It was hard on us, being his children, as he was hardly ever at home.

As an American I must say that it would probably be best if all UK police officers carried a firearm. Not just members of special units. Considering that despite tough gun regulations these thugs were able to get there hands on semiautomatic pistols it might be the difference between life and death for many officers over there.
