Very interesting story! How deep were those pool? Where did the users of those pools Learn how to swim? I can understand why the rich people that Knew how to swim were upset to swim with ignorant poor people of the lower class that did not know how to swim and wanted to use the pool simply to clean themselves.

“Film stars, celebrity chefs, fraudsters, murderers, sex criminals” were the last three really necessary? I feel like they’re kinda implied in the first two items on the list. Heck, they probably could’ve just left it at “celebrities” and we would’ve filled in the blanks.

I worked at the Savoy from 1976 til 1979 most at the time at the Savoy Grill, it was a fantastic hotel at the time and the service delivery was out of this world. The Savoy Hotel London gave me the edge that opened many door world wide! Thanks Savoy Hotel ad Friends

Visited the Savoy last month: sumptuous, a bubble isolated from the real world. One curious observation, though: Adjacent to the elegant entrance to the exquisite WCs is a grand portrait of our late Queen. Why there? Is it a subtle joke, linking one throne with another, perhaps?

The first public city pools were filled by water from the aquafiers. A first class swim was clean cold water. Day three was second class. From day five it was third class. Then empty , clean and repeat.

Please boycott this hotel: it is owned by the dictatorial family from Qatar. Apart from all the classics (no freedom of speech, no free press, tortures…), LGBT people are persecuted and women are second class citizens. If all that is not enough, migrant workers from poor asian countries (Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, India…) work there in near-slavery conditions , specially during the construction of the infrastructures of the recent football cup. Give your money to someone else. Javi Caballero (Spain)

I was a first year student from Abroad, studying at what is now the University of Brighton that year. After the days studies I went to a discotheque called the pink Coconut right close to the beach . It was a beautiful Friday night and the club was packed .Dressed in a black suit with white shirt and bow tie I wanted to think I looked cool! My friend and I met a couple of girls and left the club at 2.00 am in the morning with them . We stopped at a Turkish Donner kebab place , picked up a wrap each and headed down to the beach where we sat facing a well lit building ..The Grand hotel! At 3.00 am or so while we were "necking" , the bomb went off and shrapnel flew around! Within minutes siren and mayhem began !! I remember that some revelers had set a bonfire on the beach and the "bobbies " were all over them ..!! A year or two later I took my then girl friend for dinner on her birthday ! I did not know I need a jacket to dine at that fine establishment but discreetly the maitre d' guided me to a wardrobe and found me a Jacket and the evening was saved! It cost me 50 quid plus tip in 1986 money! lol The IRA again bombed malls and other public areas ..ruthlessly , I might add! After that I started seeing more police with guns!

I loved going to the pictures. There were so many picture houses from local "Flea-pits" to the posher ones. I remember going to watch a film with my Mum and Dad once at a posher Cinema. My Mum dressed up for it. During the Intermission or maybe before the film started (was a long time ago) there was a bar. I had to sit in a corner and remember watching my Mum having a sherry. Wish these old picture houses still existed. My Father was from Plymouth so we`d often travel down that way. It was a special treat going to what I remember as being called The Drake Cinema just off a main roundabout. There was a little model Gallion underneath the signage.

Auguably one of the great social achievments of the British Empire dash Commonwealth As a Lifeguard and Swimming teacher ive enjoyed visiting the old outdoor pools apparently our mum and dad took my brother and i to Butlins as crawlers and toddlers and i kept gravitating to the water so they decided to take us regulary usualy on a sun morning Then we would get back and dad would cook an enormous fry up only once a week mind but it was special Ive chosen to live near the sea but my holidays these days are spent visiting the old pools before the dodgy local Councellors sell them off to built flats for homeless russian Oligarcs or non swimming illegal immigrants oh well fingers crossed for a bit of Nortern European sunny weather ?
