- Spanky & Our Gang "Suzanne" (1968) (Leonard Cohen cover) - Live with Comments.
This video has been posted on RUclips many times. I don't have the copyrights to the original 1968 TV show segment - but i doubt that anyone else does either. I post this video to show you how amazing Ms. Spanky McFarlane and her group really was.
rock and folk...they did both so easily, they never got the air play the deserved,so glad I rediscovered them...better late than never.
Great harmonies and voices. 💯% pure and solid folk singer.
Elaine was so GORGEOUS then!! Always a great voice and great harmonies
Yes. I love her. She reminds me of my dear sister who passed to young.
I thought she was very pretty, but I suspect that she herself did not. She would almost certainly have thought herself too heavy-set.
Spanky and Our Gang awesome. Grew up as a kid hearing them on the radio. I'd Like To Get to Know You my favorite song of theirs. Beautiful yet haunting song, and spiritual at a time of uncertainty of the war, young ones being sent off, going off to war wondering if they would come back or not, loved ones seeing them off.
Spanky & Our Gang - one great world class band; had the privilege of listening to all their songs since I was a toddler and up to now with my grown-up kids, never get bored; so addictive, the voice harmony so silky & clean, the crystal clear guitars, bass,etc...the orchestration, arrangement --- simply perfect & amazing...the BEST!
My first time hearing this. It's great!! What harmonies!! Spankys voice is simply magnificent!! Thanks for sharing this!!!!!!!!
The best version of this song, hands down
Sure is.
A beautiful version of the great Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne".
The best version IMHO!
The 60's groups were all about harmonies. The Mamas and Papas, Spanky and our Gang, the Beach Boys, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, the Fifth Dimension, Sly and the Family Stone. Your just don't find that anymore. What a damn shame.
Don't forget The Free Design.
and The Association!!!!
And the Turtles and Beau Brummels.
A big shoutout the Seekers. Boy Judith could sing!
You got that right!
What a beautiful voice
I had a 12 year old boy crush on Spanky. I love all their music. I think Spanky was a very underrated singer. First time for me hearing this song too.
Yes,hugh voice and also beautiful
This is so good. What a treasure they were.
Fairport Convention's 1968 BBC session recording of 'Suzanne' with Ian Mathews and Sandy Denny dueting on vocals and Richard Thompson on electric lead is superb.
I think I have that version by FC.
❤what a beautiful voice and group. ❤
I've always enjoyed Spanky & Our Gang. This is the first time I've heard this piece of music by them. Thanks for posting.
Same here.
RideswithChuck same it's a nice song
I have liked the song for over 40 years, but only in the last year did I hear Spanky and Our Gang version. I thought no one could top Judy Collins ' version, but Spanky MacFarlane's "Suzanne" leaves all others in the dust.
her voice is amazing
I love them ,, Spankys voice is fantastic
Truly the best version ever, arrangement mimicking the complexity and disjointedness of the lyric.
No, sorry! The best version was sung by Judy Collins, by a mile!
- Awesome,SPanky a The MosT BeauTiFul Voice of all The Times of The Music...~😀🌌🧚🏻♀️🎶🎸
It's not very often that a cover version tops the original. Although I love Leonard Cohen's song, Spanky's version is really one of the most beautiful songs I have heard.
I will add to that: this version tops it for me together with the Dutch translated version by Herman van Veen.
Lots of different people have covered "Suzanne", and I don't think I've ever heard one that wasn't top-notch.
If you haven't listened to Roberta Flack's version, I highly recommend that one, too.
I so agree. I don't believe this was released by the band!
This is the version of the song that led me to discover Leonard Cohen. I will always be grateful.
The "Like to Get To Know You" album side two is one great side. Beautifully produced, seamlessly mixed into a magical listening experience!
Thanks you
The rolling tones from Sunday will never be the SAAAMMEEEEEEEEE" is as incredible today as it was 50 years ago. I'd LOVE to meet this dear lady and give her a HUGE 1960s colour-clad HUG of LOVE. (And by the way, the lads singin' along with her weren't too bad lookin' either!!)...nudge nudge!!
It's these videos on RUclips that eloquently communicate to people why I just can't tolerate Hip Hop or Rap.
I just can't say it's because of "Spanky and the Gang ". No. They have to have the opportunity to experience it too.
I'm frequently telling the younger generations: "See?! THIS is why your 'music' means absolutely nothing to me".
I’ve always loved folk music!
Leonard Cohen completed the difinitive work on that subject!!!
Just as in Everybody's Talkin, the definitive version of Suzanne. Absolutely amazing and mesmerizing. This group never ceases to amaze me.
I like the Neil Diamond version better.
Paul Drapiewski Definitive? Are you insane? I am a fan of the group, but this is awful.
@@EPA18 I agree. They butchered the song
I love Spanky and Our Gang, but Judy Collins covers this beautiful song solo without harmonies ...and OWNS it!
This is nice too, for sure.
I miss the 1960s.
I am so sorry I wasn't around in the 60's.
I just regret it. So many intresting things happened during that time and I wasn't there to see it.
Good times 🥰
I was there when they started out.
God bless you all! The drum man reminds me of me: A really intellectual introvert that is not easily understood by the ordinary man. And I hope you are still alive along with the rest of the gang!
Spanky and the drummer (John "The Chief" Seiter) are the only ones still with us
My favorite version of this classic!!
Mine too
Spanky mc Fairlane. She is my little girl for always. My crush. My sweetheart. My sweetness. God. Why was I born too late for my little young woman
First time I've heard this melody..real nice...
So much of the music from 1967 reflected the times - dark and ominous - a period of radical change on so many fronts.
I love this song.💟
I know there are many versions of this song, but for me Spanky's version and the album I'd like to get to know you were the best.
They were a great group. It would be great if someone would post the extended version of "I'd like to get to know you."
It's there.
Looks almost like a modern music video. The group singing on-stage, and the members of the group again on the dance floor, or at a party.
I was 7 years old during this song, playing with my G.I. Joe
You were
this song is fabulous, so many tempo changes...
I HIGHLY recommend "Brother, Can You Spare A Dime". Spanky crushes it! Then, listen to Boz Scaggs "Loan Me A Dime" - they go well together.
Fulfilling bliss at 1:14
Tom Northcott's version is the one I enjoy the most. I love Spanky and Our Gang's other songs, esp., "Like to get to know you"!
Thanks so much for posting!
Beautiful.
Brilliant.
under rated .
The early deaths of Malcolm Hale and Lefty Baker robbed us of what this group of musicians could have gone on to create. Hale and Baker in particular could have been a really great songwriting team who with the vocals of Elaine could have gone on to being a super group. Perhaps that happened in another universe. But this performance and the album Like to get to know you give a glimpse of what might have been.
I think this is performed at 'The Bitter End' Cafe
A tv studio facsimile of it
1:20 Elaine was a nice looking chick.
Elaine is a sweetheart as well as a wonderful singer!
..any chick will do for me nowadays..
I hate to sound mean, but she has not aged well. Well, we from that time are all either old or dead I guess
@@dougmcelroy3780 Time is not our friend.
@@kirkbaddley7439 She was a real looker in the early years, though. Cute as hell Midwestern girl. (Peoria, IL) Great hair.
great harmony you rarely get that today
great keep doing it
Can’t get over how beautiful Elaine was. Your right she is gorgeous.
Desde el comienzo su estilo se mantuvo igual. Únicos en lo suyo.
Gail Burke had a Spanky haircut and looked beautiful with it. Thanks for the Beatles concert in Detroit.
hugs!
I first heard Judy Collins sing it and loved it, but this version leaves hers far behind. This vocal arrangement just blows this 67 year old guy away.
I did NOT get a chance for farewell hugs/ Suznne
The Spankster has a nice voice.
spanky was the best why not record again she has many fans
I'm sorry to learn that she is the last survivor of her Spanky and our Gang band. They made a lot of good music
I wrote this song...
They are lip-synching the studio recording. Perfect.
This song inspired Joni Mitchell to write Marcie
live, where are the microphones?
Why are some of the songs black listed, in other words blocked???
Immense.
Me too !!!!) Mick Alnwick uk.
why is the ending cut ?
Neil Diamond's version is the best.... But they did it a lot differently then he did.
Hello Tonya how are you doing 👋👋👋👋👋
I agree Neil's version is the best. Hauntingly beautiful.
I think they played for my HS in the Forest Hills Tennis center in 68-69 how would I confirm that?
If you Google Billboard Spanky and Our Gang Forest Hills, you'll see that they did indeed play there on 8/10/68 with the Bee Gees and the First Edition
Thanks
Very pretty girl then.
Wow look at the puffy sleeves.
Rick Nelson narrating?
I think they need more rhythm guitars
Was Elaine related to Spanky of the Little Rascals? She resembles him
Nope
geofbrit is right. Side two of that album doesnt have a bad song on it. Leonard Cohen wrote this song, but often other singers can do a better performance. I think Kris Kristophersen is a GREAT writer, but everybody sings his songs better than he does.
Hey I like Kris singing a lot of his songs so there.
yeeeeks
Actually like the Dinosaurs music is extinct there is no music among this current gen I think hip hop destroyed black music as well
Judy Collins Aretha and Baez
They do a poor job of lip-synch on this video. But I enjoyed SEEING them.
sofisticado pacas
Spanky never got her just due
Spanky's version was better.
ouch that was painful
Cohen's sparse version was--on a scale of 1-10--a million. This is nice, but not as powerful as his performance was.
Love Spanky et al ... but this ... yikes .........
I do not like, nor, endorse, Spanky & Our Gang, because, they were not, actual, Hippies. They were, normal, Folk. Back Then. Hello, it’s, ME!, Brittney Lee Hill Collier (Age: 33. I know (already), that they will, value, Monarchy, and Tradition, just as much as, I do, by the time I finally meet them, in person. They better
I really think you need to take your medication, Brittney.
I am a fan of the group, but this song is just wrong for them. Thumbs down.
Leonard Cohen's version is better IMHO.
this version is too sing/songy
Tom Tall MUCH better. This sucks.
Dated
Yeah, it's not rap crap.
I like this song. Please accept Jesus as your personal savior by repenting from your own sins, converting into His name, and being saved by grace, as a God's free gift to you my friend. Be a new born Christian (2 Corinthians 5:17). Read also John 3:16, Ephesians 2:8-10, and 1 Timothy 2:5. God bless you
God bless you, too !
Thank you for the advice.
Please note that this great song was written by Leonard Cohen, a Jew.
While i am not practicing, i was raised Jewish.
LONG story sort of short, i am not worthy of Jesus dying for my sins - in my opinion.
+Stephen Salgaller it's called Faith my man. Just accept Christ in Your life. Plenty of my fellow Jews have. It's VERY POSSIBLE to do. Just Seek and Ye Shall Find, brother.
sin was invented by men hostile to humans having freewill and to enslave them to having guilt
malex valpo ?
davidrlfield - That's interesting, considering God,through Jesus Christ, gave us free will, to either "take up your cross, and follow me" or follow your own path...What Jesus was giving the reader was much more than symbolism...He was talking about our commitment to him...Death on a cross, was painful and humiliating, and he was willing to suffer, even unto death, asking us to do the same...total commitment ...He was giving us a word picture...That temporary pain and suffering, was worth more in eternal rewards...That we should "die to self"...and the idea that nothing in this world is worth keeping, if we lose eternal life... not family, friends, jobs, cars,
houses...Jesus died to save us from sin...it was the reason he was born...If not, than our faith is in vain, and means nothing...JOE ARSENAULT
What a terrible song..just a mangle of lyrics looking for a melody and never finding it..never thought much of Leonard Cohen's music either..he was a classic example of a personality who knew how to manipulate the masses to gain acceptance. And no doubt he succeeded at that...
Well, the artsy set does have a lot to say about stuff. They should study Hemingway a little closer, maybe they can pare the words down a bit.
What a horrible, jarring version of one of the most beautiful songs ever written.... By far - the worst version I've ever heard of Suzanne.... Destroy this pap !!
+EnosEverything By far the BEST, sorry!
+Paul Drapiewski I suggest you actually listen to versions by other people and forget the fact that you went to primary school with members of this mob who gave you some of their fudge bars for being a fat little pal... Oh, and book an appointment with the hearing loss clinic.. There is absolutely no feeling for the lyrics in this sludge of a version - they may as well be singing names from a phone book.. The song SUZANNE when sung in the way it should be gives you goosebumps - this one gives me indigestion and worse.
+EnosEverything If you want your opinion, which you are entitled to, to be taken seriously, you should refrain from vulgarity and personal insults.
+Paul Drapiewski ... Fair enough but quite honestly, ask yourself how many other versions of this gorgeous song have you ever heard ??... Even Fairport Convention's quickly put together arrangement for the BBC back in 1967/68 is much lovelier than this.
I wouldn't go so far as to say destroy it - obviously a lot of people have fallen in love with this version, and their taste just differs (a lot) from yours. And mine. I love this band, but I find their version of "Suzanne" (first time I've heard it) to be, as you said, jarring. I keep trying to find the rhythm and *can't*! The shifts in both time signature (I think they even went into 5/4 or 5/8 a couple of times) and tempo, to me, just do not fit with the song, which is filled with water flowing smoothly and evenly.
