There's also a point in the plot where the group decided to become "traitors" because Shitan snitched and "oh no Kei is coming and if we save Fena, Kei and our kin will come and kill us" But they save Fena and nothing happened.. that whole conflict was pointless and Kei only appears in the end credits to give them a slap on the wrist or something 😑

Personally, I think the series got rather bad midpoint forward. Had the series been strong all the way trough, the ending would have ruined it. However, since the series already had mostly broken down once the ending kicked in, there wasn't much to ruin and the finale was just unsatisfying and pointless rather than a disaster.

    • @Crystalgate
      @Crystalgate 2 года назад +8

I made that comment before this video aired and yeah, the video creator had a considerable higher opinion on where this series were going than I did before the ending. Had I not already lost most of my interest before the ending, I would probably also have thought it was the worst finale. As it is however, the ending just ruined what was already mostly ruined anyway.

Beside the specific issues with the ending, I think Fena shares the very same problem with another show directed by Kazuto Nakazawa (Netflix's B, the Beginning). Both have interesting premises with Western elements and stellar animation and designs. However, their plots become more convoluted and even non-sensical as they go forward.

  • @miraluu5062
    @miraluu5062 2 года назад +102

While I agree the ending came outta nowhere and was pretty fucked, I think they have a chance to get it back with a second season if they went along the lines of Fena and the crew searching to regain her memories, them slowly coming back, and then somehow being able to stop the choice of the maiden to save the future maidens or something.

Actuly after watching the series, they actuly did drop hints as to the so called out of the Blue Finale. But thats my oppinion. It would actuly be nice to have a second season. Though if you were looking for a begining, middle, and an End. So Its good the way it ended.

So Jason dimarco, head of adult swim, confirmed that we're unfortunately not getting a second season. Fena pirate princess was only intended to be a one season anime, which is stupid, because they could have fixed alot of the plot points if they were given a season two.

As with B the Beginning, the director is really good at making me feel that I could be watching AOTY (one I could recommend to even non-anime watchers) only for it to fall off a cliff towards. I actually fell off some point around episode 8ish after feeling like the show's tonal and narrative promise of the first few episodes already wasn't being kept. Sad to find out my gut feeling was ultimately true but also kind of happy to know for certain.

I mean if the idea was that fate and independence would wrestle with each other with the message being that fate always wins in the end, I can see and respect the potential in that. I think the reason it failed at the climax is because they tried to cram it down into a single season. There just arent enough details, events, and hints to justify the premise of this “fated maiden” and “observer”. I knew there was reason why by like episode 4 or 5 that I believe the show could go on for like 2 or even 3 more seasons.

Honestly, if we kept the cannon, they could make at least a small redemption by having a second season where Fena is taken on this journey to recall her memories, and in the process, we SEE the evilness of humanity, and in the back of Fena's mind, the Observer's words are haunting Fena about how humanity will destroy itself. Kill off some of her friends, fuck, as much as I hate to say it, kill Yukimaru if you have too! Make Fena regret her choice of saving humanity by facing loss, the emotional impact, questioning WHY she chose to save them to begin with if they were so terrible! As much as I hate the ending, there is a way to make the ending WORK instead of a two minute montage.

Nonetheless, it is quite interesting anime. Other than that, they got a happy ending. The way Fena smack Yukimaru's head seem like her memories are back. Plus all of the knights will not be hunted down by Kei as they already give him a gift to the island. Win-Win

Fena was never good or solid, mediocre at best (4/10) but worked as a time waster. The last 2 episodes is what made it drop to a 2/10 because not only is it badly written but also pretentious as hell (I would also include eps.11 in how the ending sucks)
    SPOILERS
    - the show crams 24 eps. worth of content into 12
    - half the cast is completely USELESS, tell me what the big silent dude or the captain of their ship ever did of significance ?
    - except eps.1, Fena never did anything noteworthy or proactive. Most of the time someone else "guides" her to do certain things or other take care of it. This is why I am not even surprised that the same goes for the ending because the entire show was like that. Also Fena is a NOTHING CHARACTER!! She has nothing to show except being loud and abrasive: She has no charisma, is not smart, no leader qualities or being good in fights... Fena is just a walking talking plot device the entire show over.
    - the "twist" in the middle that the goblin knights have ulterior motives by accompanying Fena falls completely flat because except Shitan, NOBODY ELSE KNOWS ABOUT IT!!! It was just used to create a shallow conflict about what the gobling knights want to do. It would have worked if all of them knew about it and the they initally did not give a shit about Fena herself but over their journey Fena used her charisma to win them over (remember Shitan saying that she uses her "witch power" to win them over) but the show does not care much for solid writing....
    - what was the point of the female pirate gang ? Abel hiring some generic soldiers that follow them could have done the same thing.
    - speaking of Abel: the only decent character in that damn show and they have to screw him over at the end for no reason. This is the only thing that makes me mad.
    - even as an action/adventure it is lame as hell. Theoretically it has solid set pieces and locations where cool shit could happen but most of the time they arrive at some location and spend half an episode walking there while making jokes or standing around theorycrafiting.... BORING
    Now to the ending:
Don't have to say much about it because Ember mentioned most of the issues, I just want to add this:
What is the point of testing the "maiden of choosing" ? If you are already the chosen one because of your bloodline then what is there to test ? She was not just a random girl that just fit their criteria...
When I started the show I just wanted an inoffensive action/adventure that at least gets the basics right but what I got is something that fails in basically every category imaginable (except visuals and music)
If you want an action/adventure show with fun characters, cool action, a story that does not suck and does all of that in just 12 eps. as well... I recemmend Rage of Bahamut S1 (stay away from S2) as a better alternative.

I just finished it on my Hulu DVR and man...I completely agree with every single thing you said. Like 100% to the tee. It was shocking how BORING and rote the entire thing felt.
The episode 1 premiere actually started promising, but the Yukimaru romance was so forced down the audiences throat it was hard to give any other characters attention. Not that it mattered, because literally nobody was memorable or had any sort of personality. The entire crew might as well have been cardboard cutouts. And the ending...OMG...let's just leave it at that. So terribly cliche and poorly written.
All-in-all, it was about a 4/10 for me. Visuals aside, absolutely nothing stood out, nor would I recommend this to anyone. Disappointing.

Let’s not forgot that Yukimaru looks way too old for Fena since she looks like a teenager and he appears to be in his mid 20s. Despite the fact that both Fena and Yukimaru are the same age since they grew up together as kids. And Yukimaru looks nothing like how he looked as a kid. That could have been that other Samurai Guy in the green armor and spends most of the anime hanging out in the Submarine with the dog. I mean that guy in the green samurai armor and kid Yukimaru look exactly the same. Also, there’s the whole origin story of Fena’s mother Helena who was burned at a stake for sleeping with the king of England and caring his child. Why is sleeping with royalty a crime punishable by death? Helena should have been either banned from England or given the Scarlet Letter for sleeping with the King and eloping with a Dutch noble man. Death by burning only works on people accused of Witchcraft and Helena is no Witch. And how does that make Fena a witch too based on Shitan’s accusations? Is he really afraid of calling Fena a bastard child?

I think the pacing of the story in de second half was messed up. There where so many things they didn't properly explain (like how jeanne d'arc making the stone 5 years after her death) or important parts of the story which were'nt explaind in depth. It feels like they got so many ideas and just wanted to put them all in the story.

Nice analysis. As someone else once said, I went into this series expecting Pirates of the Caribbean, but instead got...The End of Evangelion. The series still has a lot going for it, but the ending was bogus. Also I think I'm the only one who didn't like Yukimaru at all, I didn't like the way he treated Fena. He basically gave her a traumatic brain injury/concussion for "being a noisy woman". It was not funny, not cute. I never could come around to him after, I feel like Fena deserved a better man.

IDK I read your article and you have a good point in your article. IMO the whole story itself is satisfying enough for me. Helena X Abel hit me so heavy. As you said while Yukimaru confesses to Fena about his true feelings, Fena replied "I was waiting so long for you to say that" for me this reply was enough to hint us that she regained not probably but pretry sure she regained all of it because Fena is always, always for 10 years waiting Yukimaru to confess his feelings. It's just how we percieve the ending and I respect everybody's feelings in here afterall all of us watched this show and I'm just here to state my whole opinion about the ending. The whole journey, the story and the flashbacks are good.

You summed it all up really good! in the end, it is still a Kazuto Nakazawa story. filled with immense potential and forced to accept the flaws knowing it is still a good piece of art. I love the characters, concept, and world he lays out for the audience, but he always leaves us with a bittersweet opinion to his work. I will never get B:The Beginning/Succession. It was all there, then… i don’t know. Yet, they are still wonderful in its own way that can’t be explained. There’s major success, yet am left that there’s an obvious void that is missing. I will always expect this from Nakazawa’s works. Beautifully bitter.

Am I too easy of a viewer? I didn’t think the ending was that bad. Yeah it would have been nice if it went the suggested way (Fena getting strong and independent and taking control over her fate) but I don’t think it had to end like that in order for it to be a good ending. It did feel a bit sudden but, at the same time, it felt like it made sense in a way. Fena wanted to find out how she was connected to Eden and what it was she was meant to do, and she did. What she was meant to do was a bit random, but it had been a mystery from the beginning so I can accept it. Plus, the ending song seemed to be showing this decision from the beginning. So it made me feel like some dots were being connected. Some parts were a little confusing but, personally, I don’t think it ruined the story. At least it wasn’t painfully cliche to the point that I could predict exactly how everything would go down. Also, it a little open ended so there’s room to imagine that everyone loved happily ever after lol

  • @vDorgengoa

"Will there be Blue skies..... or Storm Clouds"
I was okay with the entire 12 episode run. They kinda made it clear that the correct choice was not to take the journey in the first place.
Fena wanted to do it. Yukimaru and company told her she could quit. But Fena craves adventure and freedom. It's why she escaped the prostitute house.
She wanted to know what it all meant and she found exactly what she wanted.
It was mentioned that Fena was the witch that leads men to ruin. And in retrospect it kinda seems like she charmed Yuki and friends like her mom charmed Abel. They went rogue and he went psycho..... but we never actually got a clear answer...
Now it is possible for a future season to get a better ending because Yukimaru remembers everything. What solves this is something that no one wants to do. If she never has a kid then the cycle is over. But if she does... maybe Yukimaru's knowledge of the events can prevent their descendant from taking part in the journey.

The easy way out of the choice was to kill herself. That would not work for this show. The other option is to give no answer. Based on the actions of the Observer, he cannot make this decision without an explicit statement from the maiden. So not answering could work too. And the third route is to convince the Observer about how stupid this how process is.

  • @KuroMochiKimchi
    @KuroMochiKimchi Год назад

I am probably one of the few people who will say that I liked the ending but here it goes.
I think there was a part the creator of this video missed where you find that the stuff leading up to this point was actually a test to see if she was worthy of making these decisions. While she was guided, she made certain decisions that would affect her to be the maiden of choice. Had she not made these choices, it is possible she would have either been like Helena and rushed to some weird breeding program thing or since she was already with Yukimaru, they might have just waited till her baby or the baby after to start this trial again. I think it is important to understand that in the case of Jean of Arc at least, she was also being guided by God to make certain life choices which is why this is brought up in this show to emulate this case. I think it is important to understand that the choices Fena makes is exactly why she becomes worthy even if you disagree with that she is not ready to make this decision. I don't think anyone placed in her situation would have been necessarily ready to make this choice, which really is the whole point of the choice in general. This predetermined of fate was throughout the whole story really with Abel going through his past and understanding Jean of Arc's history and seeing that there were parts Fena was just plain being controlled we could see the signs of destiny or fate coming in.
I never really saw fena as strong or independent as all or at least I never got that impression of her as she seemed like she relied on her friends and Yukimaru more than anything. If anything it is because she relied on her friends that inevitably made her want to save her friends at the end. If anything Fena goes through the story trying to learn what her destiny is and whether she should make another step to the future or just try to stay put where she is.
If this series was longer, it would have definitely been better to see both the atrocities of society as well as the good points so she could make this decision, something that Scrapped princess did a lot better but scrapped princess had 24?26? episodes so imagine doubling the amount for this show. But considering that they essentially had their obligatory "The Atomic bomb was bad!" Moment in the story (The pirate ship being destroyed) they might have thought they could have skirted this issue especially when she relived the 10 year old trauma straight after. I definitely believe the focus was supposed to show you the horrors and the good of mankind but fell flat on this.
I think the point was more of a coin flip really. At any point in the future, the world will end. The story writer knows this and will flip the coin. In this case, Noah's Arc was a flip the coin that lead to tails and wiped out humanity, the last time this had happened in this world. The storywriter uses Fena's lineage as a test subject to see whether humanity has fallen too far to evil or is still good enough for humanity to continue on as par for the course. Because Jean of Arc and Fena have chosen to continue humanity despite its problems, it means humanity is worth saving. We say of course she would but that's not really the point of this experiment. It is like a litmus test using the same if not similar measuring tool each and every time to gauge if the contents are pure or impure.

really? 2nd episode, all that bullshit talk about duty didn't tip you off, that the theme IS fate (especially, fate of women in patriarchal society)? wow.

  • @wimsylogic65

I don't think following fate's plan counts is not being independent. If we're not aware of fate's plan all our decisions that we're making are truly our own. Fate may influence us but there our own life experiences It still Us that makes The Choice.

Well... Seeing with others opinions about the anime's ending seems I am having abit doubts to continue the anime. The animation is superb since I watched episodes 1 and 2. Well then, I wont expect a happy ending hahahaa. But atleast ill enjoy myself with the animation and the plot.

I'm honestly starting to think the reviewer has not watched any of the episodes and instead, read a plot summary. It's "FEH-NA", not fay-na. It's "A-BELL", not ahhh-bell. The ending reminds me of what Tite Kubos publisher's did to him back when Bleach was wrapping up. We ended up with an extremely convoluted, rushed final battle between Ichigo, Aizen, and Uryu vs Ywach, with Ichigos original shikari being the only blade strong enough to defeat Ywach. Fenas ending was rushed as well. The plot in the final episode has absolutely nothing to with the previous episodes plot points. Nothing was resolved, none of the previous episodes questions were answered. Whomever forced Fenas rushed ending should be hung.

    1. Any 'progressive/current year' sensibilities are of no relevance. 2. Fena is a maiden of good heart and faith, period. That's all. Faith by definition requires a good heart and trusting God or whatever. Faith is simple to understand and requires huge will power because you are giving up everything for a supreme good or whatever. Fate's plan or however. Giving up much is not easy by any means and requires agency, obviously. There's nothing to explain here. Finally, people sacrifice themselves for a greater good all the time and by no means they are responsible for the harm inflicted upon them or whoever inspired them to fight. People in Tienanmen square are not responsible for the CCP actions neither was Jesus or women in Afghanistan resisting the talibán, etc. GROW THE F UP

Stop saying Fena wrong. It's Fenna not Fain-a...
Also it's Abel like Cain and Abel. Abel rhymes with fable not "a bell".

Completely disagree with the conclusion you came to, I think the whole point to was to illustrate even with all of humanity's flaws its still a people worth saving. Fena's entire agancy in the story is the wholesale rejection of Nihilism. Regardless, great video.

*NOTE* = This guy apparently didn't even watch the correct anime... "Fain-ah" and "Ah-bell" don't even exist in the show...! Unless he just can't hear and/or speak clearly...? And if you think I'm being harsh, all you need to do is watch the 1st episode just to find out what THEIR NAMES are...! Or did he just get a piece of paper and was told "Here, read this...!" Without even watching it 1st...?

FINALLY SOMEONE SAID THE DAMN TRUTH !!!
    ruclips.net/video/YdSBdVCzz4o/видео.htmlsi=3tEFb9zqAk80jOIR
You have NO IDEA how EXCITED I was when the OG TRAILER CAME OUT & then finding out they modernized the animation & plot in the trailer to what we have now. But I decided to be patient & still give it a damn go. From the preview sneak peek clips before ep 1 finally aired to every damn ep, the suspense of the mystery & island definitely hooked me, but later went trash immediately, but I still had hope up until the last 2 eps, THEY ABSOLUTELY RUINED THE POTENTIAL PLOT THIS SHOW COULD HAVE GIVEN US !!!
This was the SECOND TIME I’VE EVER BEEN SO GREATLY DISAPPOINTED BY AN ANIME STARTING AFTER ITS HOPEFUL TRAILER !!! Wanna know which was the first? Shironeko Project Zero Chronicle!
