It's clear that Ellie knows very little about medicine. They have shown (not told!) this quite elegantly. She only has a vague idea about how this "immune" thing works, which we saw when she naively tried to apply her "magic" blood on Sam's leg, and here we got a hint that she knows about stitching wounds (because, Bethany), so that's something you're supposed to do, but she doesn't really know the technical details. She's doing her best. :)

Welcome back, we all missed that smile and positivity! Hope you're doing great, this video came at a needed time for me, my family member I mentioned before went through a rough week (1 day in-patient kidney biopsy turned into 5 days waiting for blood pressure to drop followed by 2 days of IV/IG treatment).
On to the fun facts about the episode:
    - The mall is real, that is (was) my local mall. Was scheduled for demolition for a condo project, so production was allowed complete free reign for set dressing/destruction and I think that helped nail the post-apocalyptic look.
    - The mall is only 1-storey, everything above the first level is CGI (and one of their biggest expenses apparently).
    - Escalator is real.
    - Carousel is real, but from a different mall in the city. Also the song playing in that scene is a weird cover of Just Like Heaven by The Cure.
    - Bella completely nailed the subtle-but-not-subtle longing for a best friend. Their emmy nomination was for episode 8, but I think it could have been for any of 7, 8 or 9.

Sadly I have seen people who, after seeing:
Tess asks if a parent or boyfriend would be looking/hunting for her and Ellie reacts negatively to the lather
Ellie being "weird" about dressing in front of her
Her look when their bodies touch on the escalator
Her preening/fixing her hair in the glass reflection
Her look in the photo booth
still think the kiss came out of nowhere and did not see it coming like most of us did.

I wonder if those people might be neurodivergent and have difficulty reading those types of subtle cues? 😊 Just something to think about! 😊

The irony is I am. The people I talked to are not.
I was not lucky enough to have access to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). I was born in the 70's after all. My mom used TV, Movies, Books, even well written Fanfic to teach me sarcasm, subtlety, humor, and other things I had trouble understanding. I know it helps to be/easier for female to learn to/subconsciously mask and a male neurodivergent person would have problem but still; these were neurotypical males I talked to, and if a neurodivergent female can learn, the NT male should still get it unless they are incompetent.
Maybe even the NT need the homework my mom gave me.

You didn’t include it in the cut reaction clips, but the moment where cut back to Joel and he’s shivering/his teeth are chattering broke my heart. He’s probably cold because they’re in that freezing basement, and I imagine you can feel cold from loss of blood/a fever from infection? Can you experience the chills from sepsis, and if so, what’s the proper treatment? Thanks for covering this series as always. Wish Ellie had given Joel her winter hat or an extra blanket. 😢🥶

    • @JessTheMD

Oh my gosh! Yes, completely heart breaking! This show has tugged on my heart strings SO MUCH! 😓
I completely missed the obvious reason he could be shivering and breathing shakily - the cold!! DUH, Jess! 🙈🫣 but 100% - anemia can make him feel cold all on its own. Fever/infection/sepsis definitely will have a person feeling chills or super cold or breathing super shakily and unevenly. Proper treatment would be IV antibiotics 😔 which obviously are near impossible to come by in that situation. It’s just so tragic and heartbreaking all around 😔
Totally wish Ellie had done that, but also - gotta give this 14yo girl props! So resourceful and doing the absolute best she can ❤️❤️❤️

Totally agree! She’s doing more than I could at her age! When Joel wrapped his fingers around hers, I cried-they need each other. So much said without any words-just expressions.
Love Bella and Pedro’s chemistry-their off-screen friendship is so wholesome and sweet as well (it’s refreshing to see a friendship with a huge age gap that’s not creepy, as Pedro is 48 and Bella is 19). Those Emmy noms are so deserved.

Joel can barely think straight and Ellie’s just a kid with little knowledge of such things, but I remember trying to tell her, ‘Fire and snow, Ellie, fire and snow!’ Using the friction method to start a small fire would have allowed her to sterilize the needle, and she could have washed the wound out a little with melting snow, painful as that would have been for Joel. Sadly, the survivors in this world have all been taught to kill their wounded and move on.

    • @JessTheMD

One thing regarding the kids laughing: it was likely an adrenaline response, not just them being callous about death. Ellie had almost fallen through the floor with the body, after all. It's the same response Ellie had when she took out the infected.

I love hearing your insights on the medical side of things, as it really show whether or not the writers thought/consulted on these things or just used them as a plot device. It seems to be overall that things are *fairly* accurate? I was a scientist in training, so I always like to see the realism or at least attempts to make things scientifically possible. I'm also a veteran of both games, so don't worry, there are more gut punches coming up yet!

    • @JessTheMD
      @JessTheMD  Год назад +2

I always appreciate the attempts at realism! Sometimes they really are *attempts* at sometimes the realism is there (like Ellie’s rubbing her blood into Sam’s wound not working as a cure…). I am really enjoying this show!! Watched Ep 8, and oh yes. More gut punches for sure!

Listing all those things as to why he could be breathing like this, but ignoring the freezing temperatures outside. x)
Honestly, it was super obvious in the show thanks to Bellie's glances she threw at Riley throughout the episode and her making sure she looked passable in the window. The game was a lot more subtle until the kiss happened, but it's also harder to portray when you're actually the one controlling the character and have the camera behind her most of the time. But yeah, she carries a lot of survivors guilt from this, together with her immunity sort of forming her personality throughout this journey. And it sort of just gets worse when Tess, Sam & Henry died, or even Joel got stabbed, because it's all a consequence of how the world is due to the infected, and she could be a cure for this. Something that would give the world a chance to heal and humanity a chance to survive & recover, for so many tragedies to not happen. All of it shaped her, shaped who she is and what her immunity means to her, just like Joel was so heavily shaped by his trauma with Sarah. And it also shows that she's obviously not going to leave Joel to die alone there, but to fight and stay with him as long as she can, even if it are his last moments.
It's not explicitly shown in the game either, but the implication is of course that Riley turns, Ellie doesn't, and consequently she has to kill her. After that I would assume that Marlene and some other fireflies on their way to get Riley then find Ellie mourning over her, see that she's bit & Marlene protects her from getting shot by the others, leading us straight into episode 1. And now we also know why Ellie showed this resentment towards the infected in episode 3.

Yes, totally right - the cold is contributing. Not sure why it didn't even cross my mind that they OBVIOUSLY don't have HEATING! LOL whoops 😝 But yes, you're totally right - that's just another factor. But it doesn't negative the other reasons why he's breathing like that! 😝
Great thoughts 😊 Thanks for the insight!
