    Great video! I agree with your thoughts on everyone else removing the back nut for the cobra bracket. What I did was weld some flat stock on the bracket and drilled a new hole to work with the factory nut. Your way works too!
    Straight to the point with no BS. Good job.

    • @Sgt.Slides
      @Sgt.Slides  Год назад

      you can use the same driveshaft, it's a tight fit, but it will go in. Why are you swapping both ends? When you say "Cobra swap" do you mean engine and trans too? if you're swapping the engine and trans too, all bets are off, you're going to need to re measure and get a different driveshaft.

      I absolutely LOVE the swap. The biggest difference i have noticed is the ride quality cruising is much better, the car is much more planted hitting bumps in the road, The suspension is also much more tunable, although i'm not really making continuous adjustments. I do frequently see people asking if IRS will make their car "better", but in my opinion it's really a matter of personal prefrence. Cobra IRS parts have become very expensive now, and there are a lot of solid axle upgrades out there that can make your car "better" as well, but for me, it's the IRS.

    • @Sgt.Slides
      @Sgt.Slides  7 лет назад

      mine is actually the 99 IRS. They are mostly the same. People like the 03/04 because it came with stronger axles and had a diff brace. I have a steeda diff brace and the 03/04 diff and axles, so mine is basically the same as the newer one. swap wise it's exactly the same, and there are probably tons of people thinking they have 03/04 IRS but they are rocking a 99 just like me.

      expect to pay $1500 for a complete IRS, maybe even more if you try to piece one together. You've really gotta keep a sharp eye out for them if you want a decent deal. Once you get it, get a diff brace, and change all your bushings to poly. Don't mess with that over priced "Full Tilt" metal bushing kit, it doesn't get good reviews.

The S550 isn't "better" than my car, and by car isn't "better" than an s550. What i can say is that if i swapped my car for an s550, i wouldn't be able to thrash it like I do this car, i've also been able ot customize this car every way i can afford and i'm super happy with it, lastly, i wouldn't trade my experience building this car for anything. 4:46 this is NOT how you should run the bolts. The correct way is to cut holes in the trunk pan and put nuts on the inside of the frame rails. This is a great way to collapse the frame rails and not to mention that trunk pan metal is maybe 1/8 of an inch thick. Even using those large washers to spread the load isn't enough. I guess its a good thing you welded the bracket itself to the frame rail but people only using bolts should really do more research on this.

      yeah, the first time I met a guy that swapped a solid axle into a Terminator, I was like "WTF is your problem bro!" but they do it for drag racing, so that's understandable. Honestly, I don't think the IRS conversion is very popular, and there are cheaper alternatives to get your fox to handle better. I think folks go the IRS route just for the sake of taking the road less traveled, and because they have no interest in drag racing.

    Any one thinking about doing this, DO NOT WELD THE BRACKETS TO THE CAR. There is no need to, and if you every decide to sell the IRS you will have a harder time because those brackets are hard to buy separate from a complete IRS. I'd have to say overall this looks like a sloppy install.

    • @Sgt.Slides
      @Sgt.Slides  6 лет назад +1

      I never intend to remove the brackets, and I can't see why anyone would buy a rare IRS fox and convert it back to SRA. That makes no sense at all. Welding the brackets in gives them much better attachment without having to cut and weld and modify the frame which is a VERY tedious install, and would add a days worth of labor to your conversion. Not sure what else was sloppy about the install, it only bolts up one way. Ease up keyboard warrior.

    • @stew4148
      @stew4148 6 лет назад

      I like having the option to remove the brackets. Modifying the brackets to bolt in with the stock quad shock bolts and welding in plates in the trunk floor to strengthen for the vertical bolts took maybe two hours. It's far from tedious. As far as it being sloppy, I saw a few things that could be done much better. And it took me about an hour to remove the brackets for the SRA bump stops, instead of just smashing them away with a hammer like on your car. The rear brake hoses should be held in place with brackets, not zip ties. The stack of washers boogered to the hatch floor is not enough support for those bolts to get tight enough to do anything. I'm not trying to be a keyboard warrior, I'm trying to help other build better cars. One last thing, do you have spacers welded to the bottom of the springs?

      Yes, there is also the route of modifying the bracket to meet the bolt hole as well. I detailed that in my write up on the website. It's a good alternative if you want to DIY this job but don't have access to a good welder in your workshop, and that would not require cutting and welding of the frame rail. Either way, my brackets are in, and I can say without a shadow of a doubt, I will NEVER want to remove them. The washers welded to the floor is plenty of support for those bolts. In hind sight, I do wish I had cut out a thick piece of plate steel and welded that in vs what I did, but I didn't have good drill bits at the time to really drill thru thick metal. I wish I could re do it, but there's no point, what's in there is perfectly fine. the car has been thrashed every kind of way since then and nothing has moved or flexed, it's solid. Zip ties are securing the brake hoses because it's impossible to get the OEM plastic clips from ford that do the exact same thing, calling someone out for zip ties? C'mon bro. The old bump stop location was actually mashed up when I crashed, witch is why I ended up tearing the whole car down and re building it over 2 months. Aside from a few ugly welds this IRS install is as solid as it can be, and yeah, lol, you caught me on the spring spacer. I welded an extra coil to the bottom of the spring to raise the rear an inch. A bit haggered if I do say so myself, but it works for now until I swap it for an adjustable coil over set up.

      Hey PFM, I'm looking to add an irs to my foxbody. I have a question about the spring spacers: if you did that to rise the height by an inch, do u think it would better to just use the factory IRS springs? I'm not here to knock on you about the spacers, I just thought that maybe the stock IRS springs might be a better solution. Let me know, so I can order some. Thanks!

      Premium Fuel Mag i actually got a 92 coupe with complete 03 IRS. I got it from am older lady who really didn't know much. I hated it. Wheel hopped all over the place with the slightest hit of gas.. it was just nasty. Went back to a solid rear and way better imo
