  • This is part 1 of a 5 part series on the IRS build-up involved in swapping a factory 03 Cobra IRS into a 2000 mustang GT. On this episode I show you how to disassemble any 99-04 mustang IRS to prep for whatever your project is.

      I'm glad you enjoyed it, I've been away for awhile but I still have one more video to release of it actually being installed in the car.

    Very interested to see how this turns out after the sand blasting and everything, I’ve been toying the idea of an IRS swap in my 03 GT.

      Jon Huston Thanks, I’m not sure if I have enough footage to make an episode about sandblasting the whole thing. I’ve gotten slammed at school so I haven’t been able to edit and release a new video recently, but I’ve completed the swap already and it makes a HUGE difference. Definitely would recommend it

    Anyone doing the sway bar end links. Use a crescent wrench to hold the threads from spinning. Vice grips will ruin it and round them

    Btw my end links have a hex Head on them? And the cross axis nut and bolts are 18 mm not 19

    I'm the guy who says fuck IRS. Call me old school but I prefer my solid axle and the IRS just has even more shit to maintain over a solid axle. Way more...

      alright gramps

      A good ol’ torque arm and panhard bar will make a solid axle handle like it’s on rails, you’re right tho an irs has more shit to maintain but once you replace all the bushings you don’t have to worry about it for years and it’ll be a much more comfortable ride

    Good break walk through disassembly on an IRS. FYI the gearing for all IRS are 3:27 - same for Cobra straight axles on the SN95.

    have part 2 yet?

    • @briggsautomotive1559
      @briggsautomotive1559  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, and no. I'm driving the car with the IRS right now, and I have footage of swapping it, and a little footage of swapping the bushings and sandblasting but not enough to make an episode of installing bushings and sandblasting I don't think. So that part 1-5 thing probably won't happen. Plus i've been super busy with school and haven't had a ton of time to edit... Would you prefer to see the swap from SRA to IRS with a little bit of footage from the bushing install/sandblasting in one episode, or try to make 2 episodes out of it?

    The stock gear ratio for a 2001 cobra is 3.27.

    That IRS is crap without proper bushings.. (I have a 04 cobra)

      Dragan Matekalo Absolutely, my dads cobra has factory bushings still, and I can confirm the ride quality in my GT is significantly better with the FTBR bushings

      99 Cobra owner here: He’s referring to handling and traction, not ride quality. Soft ford rubber will ride better, but there is a crazy amount of deflection at multiple points. The subframe can shift independently from the body, your rear alignment will change when the control arms deflect under hard throttle, even the differential isn’t rigidly mounted to the subframe. All that happens because the bushings are too soft. Totally fine for street use, terrible for performance.
      Full Tilt Boogie Racing has extensive documentation of these shortcomings, it’s a really interesting read.
