Rediscovering the photos of Paul McCartney

- Paul McCartney recently uncovered photographs he'd thought were lost - ones he took during The Beatles' first tour of America in 1964. The pictures - candid shots from the vantage point of newly-anointed superstars - are the basis of the book, "1964: Eyes of the Storm," and an exhibition currently on view at the Brooklyn Museum. Correspondent Anthony Mason gets a private tour with McCartney, who talks about documenting the astonishing welcome that the "lads from Liverpool" received in the U.S. (An earlier version of this story was broadcast on June 18, 2023.)

I was at Kennedy airport that day! Brings back many memories of an incredible time.
Wow!! History. ❤😮
He needs to live forever ♥️
Paul practically the one-man legacy machine for the Beatles, keeping the spirit alive (his photos also evoke Linda's photography spirit, his soulmate :)
First thing I thought of too. Linda.
How awesome. These are such great shots. That he took them makes them absolutely priceless
Amazing talent
Music is magical! The Beatles are the Mozart of our time!
I got to see exhibit in Norfolk,Va when first came to the US. It was amazing. You need to see this. If you cant in person buy the book. I did.
Thank you Paul for sharing!
I saw this amazing exhibit in Norfolk, Va. So good. Put it on the calendar as soon as I heard it was coming.
In the photo at 2:04, you can see that the French yé-yé singer Sylvie Vartan was opening for the Beatles at the Olympia in Paris. I love connections like that!
This is great! Paul didn’t make his living taking snapshots, but like every good photographer, he’s an *artist* who knows what moments to capture and how to go about it! 📷
Paul McCartney, Thank you for the wonderful memories shared with your incredible photos. The Beatles Fan Forever.
Paul McCartney is very special and talented.
Saw this exhibit when it first came to the United States in Norfolk, VA! Wonderful.
Amazing how well they held up, especially enlarged.
I bought the book a while back. At first some of the photos seemed unimpressive, but then I realized that the Beatles didn't have their "posing faces" on. This was them being themselves, so it's a chance to see them being ordinary. That picture at 1:34 is really delightful, capturing one female fan's recognition. After seeing so many pictures of them during their first U.S. visit, it's interesting to see the view from the opposite side, especially taking pictures of the pro photographers.
Stu Sutcliffe and his wife Astrid deserves an assist.
Fantastic! Thank you for showing (and making) these amazing photos. I'd love to see the exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum too.
Beautiful unguarded pics of the young Beatles
I love Paul McCartney music. I now admire his perspective of his photography.
The audio is atrocious!
Probably copyright Beatles music.
@@moderateminneapolita Could be but it seems like it hasn't been mixed down properly.
I think they couldn’t have the audio of the music for stupid RUclips reasons.
I'll be taking a trip to Brooklyn.
"Exceptionally wonderful".
Paul is awesome
I was 12 yrs. old when the Beatles came to America‼️They sure added to our culture 'n changed the world, just like Elvis did the decade before 💙☮️🌅✝️
Such great history🎉❤
The audio on this is terrible! What happened?
Great interview, Paul sounded great, but Anthony's audio was terrible.
Paul seems very down to earth despite his fame.
How amazing still after all these years thank you Paul
Hope the exhibit comes to Chicago. I will look for the book.
and thru that hurricane and insanity, they still turned out 100 more music tracks that we are still buying in huge numbers. the walrus was paul.
Magical!
Thanks Paul.
Love the Beatles. 😂❤
Ringo is also an excellent photographer!
Wow. CBS publishing split track audio, un-mixed, with no music.
I can't remember from when this was first uploaded, but maybe the original used clips of Beatles songs and they got swatted down by RUclips?
@@fustigate314159 That’s a good observation. They may have run into RUclips’s copyright bots. But, I’d hope that the network would at least do a remedial mix on the audio before publishing - even without the music.
@@StephenMann, right, you'd think if they were going to repost it several weeks later (instead of just totally dropping it), they'd spend a bit more time on the mix.
It seems a bit unlikely to me that in the original, Paul McCartney was panned fully left and Anthony Mason was fully panned right. Sooo... this isn't just the original with track for the Beatles clips dropped.
The audio is really off in this - because of the Beatles audio?
Voices came in and out
Why all the silent parts and missing questions?
I know it's a long shot but I hope the exhibition also comes to Asia!
Hey if you’re gonna pan the audio left right atleast have it correspond to the video!
For anyone who has 50+ years under their belts, one can look back and think how fleeting youth is, and this particular time in music history. Every generation experiences that "where did the time go?" moment.
Can’t hear Anthony Mason’s part of the interview. What’s up with that?
Reuploaded with an odd left/right stereo mix??
Excelente
This is great but we can’t forget it was his wife Linda who was the true talented and professional photographer. We tend to forget the people who are no longer here
That's not the point.
@@emerybaybluesHe wasn’t even dating Linda when he took a lot of these photos.

He is good friends with james corden. I saw when he went to his childhood home. It's the real deal.
Is all the dead air in this piece where music was supposed to be? How strange that CBS doesn't even use its own sound from the Ed Sullivan appearance.
slightly off topic but does anyone know for a fact what the state of the beatles catalog ownership is? there's been decades of controversy and paul trying to win back the rights ever since MJ bought the catalog in 1985. A few things i saw in my research: 1// MJ owned the beatles catalogue until 1995 when he sold 50% to sony for 100 million$. then MJ's estate sold the other half to sony for $750 million in 2016. 2// there is a 1976 law that says music goes back to its songwriter after 2 separate 28 year periods, so in paul's case he should have regained control of some of beatles music in 2018 which is why he sued sony in 2017 which they settled but its a secret what the arrangement is and is supposed to regain control of the rest of beatles songs in 2026. 3// lennon's 25% ownership in the beatles catalog was sold to sony by yoko and will stay in sony's possession until 2050, 70 years after lennon's death then it goes back to john's estate.
can anyone confirm or clarify any of this information? something doesnt add up, and its alot of legal mumbo jumbo.
I’m assuming there was originally a Beatles music bed on channel 2 that had to be dropped for RUclips to avoid a copyright strike. Needed some stock music or something to fill in those gaps.
I’d prefer the silence over stock soundalike music
4:58 Mac conveniently by-passes; makes no mention of pal George's other _'living-the-life'_ accoutrement vividly photographed in hand. Harrison would eventually succumb to lung and throat cancer.
"Taking photographs I was just looking for a shot. So, I'd aim the camera"
-Paul M
I know, right?🤔
How did he rediscover them? In his basement?
From what I understand, some people who work for him found them hidden away at his London office not long ago. He was shocked when his staff told him about the find!
He asked his archivist about them, thinking them lost. She said: "No, we still have them."
is 'rediscover' a word? lol
So fuking what
That is totally fake. That person is not. Paul McCartney.
Who the hell is he then?
