- Paul McCartney recently uncovered photographs he'd thought were lost - ones he took during The Beatles' first tour of America in 1964. The pictures - candid shots from the vantage point of newly-anointed superstars - are the basis of a new book, "1964: Eyes of the Storm," and an exhibition at London's National Portrait Gallery. Correspondent Anthony Mason gets a private tour with McCartney, who talks about documenting the astonishing welcome that the "lads from Liverpool" received.

What an extraordinary experience the Beatles had. 60 years later these lads still put a smile on my face.
They were amazing huh? Love all their music even today.❤😂🎉
Me too…and a tear in my eye.
I can still remember sitting on the carpet in front of a black and white tv watching ED Sullivan that night.
duh
Indeed. How did we all get this old? I was a kid when the Beatles came to America. Now Sir Paul and I are both old men. How did this happen?
Sir Paul has represented the Beatles in such a beautiful light. He has framed it perfectly with these photos.
Yeah, Sir Paul releases those old photos taken by James Paul McCartney

What a guy ✌️
He can still make girls scream and faint. Not a bad run.

"From lads from Liverpool, that was exceptionally wonderful."
Sir Paul has not forgotten where he came from and embraces his roots with affection and appreciation.
What an extraordinary life!
Not many people have the chance to take photo's like those, it's so cool seeing the POV of a Beatle!
His brother was a photographer - so they had the family instinct.
Didn't Ringo take a lot of photos too...from the Beatle POV...
@jeffschwartz4t.o.council-j132 Yes, yes but these photos were in 64. His basis was Michael McCartney.
Paul has been the most consistent in promoting the group…the way he captures the innocence, Hope and joy they experienced comes through with his work. Thank you Paul.

@@harleydurianriders4477 LZ was great, but they were not The Beatles. The Beatles had 3 singers, 4 if you count Ringo. Led Zep has one singer. The Beatles had a much wider range than LZ. Sure, LZ had some ballads, but not the quality or quantity of The Beatles. Cream, they are almost forgotten now, Clapton has been playing the same thing for the last 30 years. Hendrix was a great guitarist with a mediocre voice. The Beatles changed everything. If it wasn't for the Beatles there would not have been a Hendrix or a Cream. Sir Paul is still so cool and humble. He was so down to Earth that he was taking pictures of everyone else around him. Not obsessed with himself and his own stardom.
No selfie sticks in 1964, just tripods.
Wow, he recorded his own history via the camera. Nice one. Happy birthday, Sir Paul.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY" Paul. This was WONDERFUL ! I was 19 in 1964 when I moved to L.A. to break into showbusiness. I can tell you that what Paul describes what he went through is truth. I never attained the success that he or The Beatles achieved, but THIS is how it was when you first started out and were successful. You experience things you never thought possible. You're living a life so foreign to you that you're beyond happy, but still in shock. I am so happy and proud of what Paul has achieved in his life and am thrilled that he decided to share it with us. It was so long ago and some many roads have been taken. I'm just proud that I even experienced just a small part of that life and success. Thank you Paul. 💙
One of the greatest musician and songwriters.
Not one of the greatest songwriters....
The greatest songwriter.
Guinnes world record most succesful songwriter. His song Yesterday has the most number of covers. Trully a genius.

Unless you were alive at the time, unless you were in your teens, unless you didn’t live in a cave.. you couldn’t begin to understand the power they held over the masses!! You have described it so perfectly. I can still remember the first time I heard " Love, love me do " Beatlemania is the right description .It totally consumed us.I bet like me you can be back in those moments instantly. The excitement and the all powerful love we felt for them is still so clear .It was all so different to anything that had gone before. The excitement of queuing down the street from the record shop on the day a new album was released. Then carrying it home like a treasure and pouring over every every word and picture on the cover whilst listening to new songs Nearly wearing the needle out on the record player playing it over and over again..Carving their names in our leather school satchels, sticking every photo we could find on our walls...and getting a telling off from mum. Dreaming about meeting them. What a time it was.😢😢❤❤
It's too bad Lennon and Harrison didn't live longer so that they could view this stuff and really appreciate the great times they all shared together.
That photo of George by the pool is a work of art. 👌

Thank you for airing this! My late husband Tim was a MASSIVE Beatles fan. He was born in '63, but was introduced to them by his brother who was 8 years his senior, so watching this brought up great memories

I wish John and George could have gotten to see those photos. Can you imagine finding 60 year old photos of you and your mates having the times of your lives that you'd never seen before? Amazing.
My father, on his death bed, told me, " You really loved the Beatles as a kid ." I was 6 when the Beatles played on the Ed Sullivan show . At that time, they were my favorite band .
Very cool. Love how McCartney continues to further the Beatles legacy with grace and class. He’s got a great dry and laid back sense of humor.
I feel like I grew with the Beatles. I remember the first time on radio and dancing outside on the sidewalk to their music..
One of the most joyous piece I’ve ever seen on CBS Sunday Morning! That shot of George and girl in yellow bikini…wow👏🏼😍And Sir Paul looks absolutely phenomenal! What a gentleman and what an eye🤗🙌🏼
I'm a lad from Liverpool in fact just a couple of miles from Paul's house in South Liverpool and absolutely loved this interview, so glad Paul found these historical photographs which I look forward to seeing at London's National Portrait Gallery soon.

I remember waiting for each new Beatle album to be released and the joy and wonder each time at their creation. Today, all their songs are iconic, but there was a time they didn't exist.
I know.. it almost felt like scandalous when all their albums were released at once on Spotify and I was able to listen to every song they’ve ever made within 24 hours. Overwhelming! Really would’ve appreciated it more if I had to wait for it
That has to be cool. The only thing like that I experienced was the Anthology series. That set me off into exploring all of their sessions and outtakes. It was sort of like getting new stuff.

I was aware of The Beatles a month or two before the Ed Sullivan Show. A neighbor had their first UK release LP. Somehow we knew life had changed that TV evening, and it did. Love the photos, Paul! How wonderful you rediscovered them and thanks for sharing! It's so rare that you even had a second to take any photos. Happy Birthday, Paul!
How, on earth, did he keep all those photos organized?
And, they are great pictures. When I look at my old pictures from that time, I realize how amateurish they are. Paul had a real talent for taking pictures as well as all his other creative abilities.
His daughter Mary, who is a professional photographer like her late mother Linda, once said that all of the people in her family seemed to have an eye for photographs and composition, not just her mother.
Happy birthday, Sir Paul - but the gift of your photographs is ours! I don't know if the exhibit will travel but I was blessed to see the exhibit of Linda's photography currently on display at the Center for Creative Photography at University of Arizona's campus through 8/5/23 (I live in Tucson) and it feels like an answer to this prodigious collection of your own photographs. I was 7 years old when the Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan and I remember it in every cell of my memory, then saw the Beatles in person at age 10 in 1966 at Olympia Stadium in Detroit, Michigan (I won two tickets in a contest sponsored by Cunningham's Drugstore and took my 11-year old neighbor). Such a magical time and you are the magician that helped to create it ❤
@@harleydurianriders4477 It is true, I have the photos to prove it and having gotten older, I must marvel at my mom's bravery to let her 10 year old daughter and her 11 year old neighbor girl go to this concert in 1966 when there were no cell phones and trust that we would find where she said she would park the car at the appointed hour (the concert was during the day, amazingly enough, I think it was August 13, 1966). We did it! Success from start to finish! The Beatles were wearing light-colored suits, they were fronted by Cyrkle ("Red Rubber Ball"). I can still hear the wall of screaming that made up most of the sound. Heaven only knows what I did with the ticket stubs.
Paul, thanks for sharing these photos! Glad you're still singing & writing songs !! We're all so lucky to have had the Beatles way back then and forever into the future!

The footage at 1:00 shows a transformative moment, not only for The Beatles, but for us as well. Things were never the same after their arrival at Kennedy Airport. And seeing John come off the plane in NY, wind blowing his hat off, setting him on his ultimate destiny....just chills when I think of the import of that moment.
I remember very well their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show --- it was very near my 5th birthday, I was all set to watch The Wonderful World of Disney (a cartoon presentation I'd been looking forward to all week, a birthday present just for me), when my babysitter comes over in a bit of a panic, Ed Sullivan is about to come on and their TV is broken, can she please please watch The Beatles on our TV?? Mom of course said yes, and I sulked miserably behind a chair the whole time. But I was there, sort of, at this breakthrough moment that changed history. So Linda, wherever you are, sorry I was mad at you, and thank you for coming over that day.
Now I really want to check out that “Eye of the Storm” book. It looks really interesting!

To me, they represent those beautiful days before rock stars were arrogant, snarling narcissists. They were clever, glib, charming and overall just pleasant. Their talent made them famous but it was their personalities that made them so extremely popular. The amazing thing is that they were really a humble bunch of guys that never lost sight of where they came from or how lucky they were to have lived the life they got to live. How can you not love them?
