He’s right, it is a scam. But Bill still needs to refine his argument. Employers demand degrees because it offers another piece of important information about the candidate. Good luck changing that. And until then, not getting that piece of paper the world is demanding is bad advice. Unless you’re absolutely positive you want to go into the trades or start your own business, you might as well open up your options with an undergrad. Most kids aren’t doing anything meaningful between 18 and 22 anyway. The world needs to change before skipping college becomes a good idea.

State government has something to do with it, but as a student of public schools in several different states, it really just comes down to the teachers, and (anecdotally) it seems like 75% or more simply aren’t that smart and aren’t that good at teaching. Kind of is what it is. Kids have to get out and into the world to really learn…public school isn’t going to do it.

    • @D12345

I'm not sure its wholly the public education system, though that is a factor. It is many jobs are companies now and companies want people to have 10 plus experience to get into anything before hiring them and/or algorithms that pick resumes that keep people out of certain job markets. Most other jobs that don't require this tend to have depressed wages. America is the service economy, restaurants and markets (while many market jobs are drying up). ---or something real estate or construction related which you often still need additional schooling.

He is right about the cost, which should come way down and in fact, public universities should be based on income levels or be almost tuition free based on taxes, and he is also right about people who go to college do earn more money, often double what someone who didn’t go earns. But he is wrong about his own conclusions and higher education not being important. Those who graduate from university do have much higher levels of critical and often creative thinking skills. That’s why military officers must have a college degree (or even graduate degree) in order to excel in the ranks.

Bill‘s position on colleges extreme. He looks at a very broad issue and tried to use a broad position to resolve it. This idea of we don’t need to go to college anymore. That’s stupid what you don’t need people going to college and studying for that don’t pay the significant amount of money. The problem is, that is a lot of words and nobody wants to eat a lot of airtime with a lot of words that requires a lot of processing and we don’t usually go that deep into things. We just don’t earn enough money now so they shouldn’t go to college nobody bothers to ask what are they studying? If you were studying, you would know it isn’t that they shouldn’t go to college that they shouldn’t go to college and study that. The American dream is to have a college degree to be able to say I graduated from university X or to be able to say my son my daughter went to university y. The problem is, we don’t think about how much it cost to go to school and once you’re done with school, how much money will you earn afterwards?
Bill also made a mistake when he said there was never really a time when college was useful to the United States that is so untrue. The race to space disproves that argument. If we go back to the 1950s on the 1960s, we saw that the competition Between the United States and Russia fueled people going to college and studying math and science. When they studied math and science guess what they were able to earn a decent living and they helped win the race to space. In case people forgot we were losing every battle in that race. We only won at the very end.
No, we need college level education in America, but bill is correct. It is a scam. It needs to be reformed. A majority of the material you study in college you should be able to study in high school. In fact, everything you need to get an associates degree should be learnable in high school. Yes you should be able to graduate with your traditional high school diploma but if you want, you should be able to continue going to high school for an additional timeframe and earn an associates degree you have an associates degree. It normally takes two years to earn a skilled trade, it normally takes two years to earn an associates degree. Usually that you teach students some of these skills some of these classes while they are in high school. So you can easily have two graduation ceremonies one for high school and then another one for the associates degree.
Then they should have to go to a four-year college or university but guess what it won’t be four years because you spent two years studying college level material so you only have two years to go. Guess what you’ve just cut the cost of college education in half You didn’t even have to do anything too difficult. Sure you change the public education in America and you got rid of some of the junk level material we teach but that should be gone anyway. You should do the same thing at the college level, you should get rid of some of the junk material.
Go look up college degree right now and you will see it is full of humanitarian or liberal arts coursework. Classes you take before your junior year to make you a better well-rounded student. You should have to take some of those classes, but man the list of classes you have to take to be well rounded, has grown over the years , the number of classes you actually have to take to be a professional. Fix that. Take out those classes you don’t need and you can actually reduce. The time of person has to go to college again reducing the cost of a college level education simple solutions that solve a major problem in America you don’t even have to reform student loans. You don’t even have to reduce the cost of tuition per credit hour. You just get rid of some of the credit hours because you don’t need them anyway no disrespect to humanitarian course loads, but they are too burdensome today’s college education.

But keep the comfy sofas so people know we COULD be comfortable but were choosing to be uncomfortable during uncomfortable political conversations. College which equals more coin for anyone who has a college degree and the promise an improved future. Blue Collar skills carry less weight now in the workplace than ever.

6:45 He literally can't. There's a clip of him on a YT channel where guys roast him during his golf swing by asking if his club was made in China and he goes "I dunno. Not too much is being made in China, these days." It's like even when there are no cameras, no crowd, no one to put on an act for, no one to say the (R)ight things to and manipulate (as he said, decades ago, he would, if he ever ran for Office), even then he cannot make a statement that just accidentally happens to be true. He just casually blurts out things that are ridiculously untrue.
But, him and his bootlickers (and generally people on the Right, and not just their rabid minority) are incidentally also the ones who are more prominently taking a stand against the sheer lunacy coming from the Left. So, it's understandable why they're getting support.

I totally disagree with Bill about the whole college thing. Democrats do not feel that college solves everything, in fact, college is there for people to have a better education other than high school. That is not to say that getting a vocational degree in something is lesser, but it seems as though if more people had a government funded college program that lasted for 2 years that was not geared towards pushing propaganda onto people, but teaching people to think critically, and to actually teach them history, economics, politics, and some other things that I feel are basic for making informed decisions about voting and how we operate in society we might have less crazy going on. But I know that the word “government funded” is a dirty word on the right. We need to progress past some of these fears and skepticisms. I consider myself to be in the middle, like I feel, and Bill feels most of America is, but the extreme left and the extreme right are ruling the day, and the media is enabling both sides because they, love the drama and that’s what they will put forth, and they will use the first amendment as their right to do that, but they also need to get their priority straight as well, and maybe progress past this whole if it bleeds it leads thing.

He only has the book because he has been telling (or attempting to tell) the truth the whole time.
You can tell who is interested in the truth vs who lying for their own purposes by looking at their track record. You can't fake a track record, but unfortunately a lot of people lie about it and more people have a short term or are too lazy to read history and its consequences.
This is true in politics, economics, people you meet, life, etc. Tragic that current society views deception is almost treated like a virtue and it harms the people must interested in the truth if we get misled. I (like Maher) have read enough history to know that this model can't last.
