Ron Moody passed away June 11th 2015. Will be very much missed as he was a true gent. I was privileged to meet him last year and he was truly lovely. R.I.P Ron.
Thanks for posting this :) I wondered what became of the cast of Oliver ! I was saddened to hear Jack Wild died so young and had alcohol & smoking problems. He was such a good Singer & Dancer. I enjoyed hi s performances inn HR Puffenstuff
So sad regarding Jack Wild, turning to alcohol and smoking at such a young age. He was a truly exceptional talent who should have had many more years on the stage and screen. He will forever be remembered as the Artful Dodger. The late Ron Moody and Oliver Reed were also truly outstanding in Oliver!
The first film I ever saw at the cinema (in fact the first film I ever saw in my life) was 'Oliver'. I went on a school trip to see it on 26 February 1969. The next time I went to the cinema was not until 1977 and both Mark Lester and Oliver Reed were in that film too! To those who hate the music: Just mute it as I do! Backing music annoys me so I always mute it.
I know I am being unfair as this was a wondrous film and Mark Lester was fine but if you read the ending notes it says that he could not simulate tears , could not dance and could not sing and yet STILL got chosen after 5,000 others were rejected....lol
When I was in 4th grade ( or if that's how Americans call it ) I had a massive crush On Jack Wild when he was a teen. So , I had a play which was 1968 Oliver! film. I had to be Nancy but I wanted to be Dodger badly. I even cried because I wanted to be Dodger. R.I.P Jack Wild. I love you Jack!
Boulevard. Wow!! I have nearly the same story. Was also gaga for Jack Wild and tried to play The Artful Dodger in an LA County Recreation Depart. Production of "Oliver". Played one of Nancy's girls instead. Can't believe you have the same type of story. I was kind of embarrassed that I wanted to play a guy "looking" back (I was his age). But you bring it home that I had a serious crush. I certainly did.
could almost say its one of those "cursed" movies where something happened to about 90% of the cast that made them die young. I know most of them died "because of their own fault" but still.
@@acrossthebarricades8203 Exactly! Many of the actors in a film made 50 years ago are now dead - who knew? I believe the cast of Dad's Army are similarly cursed...
Incorrect facts: Mark's voice WAS used, and mixed with Kathe Green's voice, plus she helped with higher notes. And 2,000 boys were auditioned for the role of Oliver - not 5,000!
Amazing actors all! But for me, Ron Moody will always be Fagin and Oliver Reed will always be Bill Sykes. I cannot imagine anyone else in those roles! Actually, for that matter, if you read Dickens' description of The Artful Dodger (Chapter 8, Oliver Twist), it is Jack Wild! 💜
I saw this movie at a wonderful old theatre in downtown Topeka, Kansas, 1970 where I was going to business college. I was 18. I loved it and went back for seconds.
I already knew most of this, as I've always been a big Oliver fan, as I love musicals. But one great thing about it (amongst others) was Mark's singing. So to find out this, has totally shocked me & I feel betrayed ! I gave that kid/guy, so much credit, for his acting & singing & now finding out that, I feel he doesn't deserve half as much credit he has got, for doing that film. I'll never look at the guy, in the same way again !!!
They left out Peggy Mount, who played the Widow Corney, as well as the actors and actresses who played Mrs. Sowerberry, Charlotte, Charley Bates, Mrs Bedwin, Dr. Grimwig, and some of Fagins boys. Please make a note of it. Thanks. High Griffith won a supporting Actor Oscar for "Ben Hur" (1959)
Davy Jones played the Artful Dodger on Broadway. He was on the "Ed Sullivan Show" showcasing his Artful Dodger talents when the next group on stage were "The Beatles" making their debut. Davy told me this as he sipped on his Grey Goose vodka, "And then Helen, I realized I wanted more of what they (The Beatles) got! I wanted girls screaming after me, so I scrapped acting & decided I needed to be in a musical group." #MissUDavySuchAGreatFriend
I am sorry I saw this because I always thought that Mark Lester who played "Oliver" did his own singing. Not a girl. When I played that soundtrack of him singing "Where Is Love" , I always thought it was 'little Mark Lester. I may never play it again. Oh, the magic of the movies. And it is stated here that about 5.000 boys were tested for the part of Oliver. Wouldn't you think that out of 5.000 boys a few of them could REALLY sing? Althought Mark Lester did a terrific job as Oliver.

OMG! That prank of "Mr.Bumble"(Sir Harry)pulling off "Oliver's"(Mr.Lester's)ear during The "Oliver"number..that must have scared the living hell out of him..and the actress playing:"Mrs.Corey".
Not entirely accurate. Jack Wild turned fifteen whilst making Oliver! and was not yet a drinker. He wasn't diagnosed as diabetic until he was nearly 30. He started drinking in his late teens and started drinking heavily in his mid- to late-20s. (He did get sober some 15 years before his death.)
Guys halve this info is not true fagin boy’s picture is wrong and Oliver is his only film and though yes jack wild did smoke and drink and his recovery is correct and unfortunately his death (rip) he did not smoke that younge it was more around his late teens early twenties as with his drinking RIP jack wild you are a beautiful human and I will miss you dearly and my crush for you will never die xxxx
According to a recent interview with Mark Lester, he said that his voice and Green's daughter were mixed together, so it wasn't entirely her voice. Kate's voice was used for the high notes, the rest was Mark Lester's. So it wasn't completely dubbed by her
Good for Mark Lester..... I was in love with that character since age of 8. Saw Oliver in grade school first time. It was fascinating.... also horrifying when Nancy was killed. I knew seeing this film life was not going to be easy. Yet filled with joy & pain. Still one of my most beloved film to this day. This version was definantly the best of all time. God bless the cast. Artful Dodger, Fagan of course Oliver..Mark Lester ...somehow a dead ringer for Ryan O'Neal. Thanks for posting.

They forgot to mention that Oliver Reed died while making Gladiator Reed was a great actor even though I only knew him for 2 films Oliver and Gladiator RIP
Oh, I wish I didn't find out that Mark Lester was not even singing. I must have been 7 when I saw the movie and I connect that face with the voice used! Ughhh. One of my favorite movies, thanks for the info. Kind of shocking because time has gone by so fast and most of all the adult actors have passed :(
Point 1: He was Jackie Wilde, not Jack Wild, he was related to Kim and Marty. Kim had hits with the EMI-owned RAK label in the early 1980s, like "Kids In America" and "Cambodia" while Mary's biggie was on the Philips label(for Australian issue), "Abergavenny" in 1968. Point 2: Mark Lester also starred in a movie called "Melody" in 1970 with songs penned in 1969 by The Bee Gees in the soundtrack except for the closing credit. For that the producers used the 1970 single "Teach Your Children" by Crosby Stills Nash & Young. Mark Lester also made a guest appearance in 1969 on the TV series, "The Ghost & Mrs Muir".
Fagan and The artful dodger, may very well be the greatest characters I've ever seen. They were likewise portrayed by amazing actors. They sure don't make movies like this anymore.
That was in 1968, the times were a bit different to our current laws, and the fact that at that point they didn't even know the full effects of smoking probably didn't help either.
Actually, I totally disagree with parts of this info on Jack Wild I've since watched just about every video of Jack Wild that exists, & articles to boot, & he was NOT smoking cigarettes at 12! Or drinking! At age 12 him & his brother were had little odd jobs about, and Jack was earning about 5. Not sure if it's $$ or 5£, a week helping the milkman! Around that time, & its funny the Dude brings up the creepy shit about Michael Jackson & Mark Lester, but hey, No mention of JACK'S connection to someone else FAMOUS? A Mother came up & asked both boys if they'd be interested in Showbiz. Acting. For Real. They said we just got to ask our parents. The parents agreed if they really wanted to do it. They did. The woman? A Mrs. Collins, (1st name I forgot) but who had a Son, by the name of PHIL. To become good friends with Jack from that time on. Phil Collins, that is, lead singer of Genesis, & outstanding solo artist! So at 12, Jack would go on to play in the stage production of Oliver, and one other performance of Oliver, but not as the Dodger. They said he was too short. By age 14, Jack had been acting on stage for 2 year's and the film adaptation of Oliver for the Screen came out. Jack auditioned as did Mark. Surprised too he got that role! Couldn't, sing, couldn't cry, couldn't GI out & play, jeez! Why him when so many others tried out?? Anyway, Jack had to audition about 6 X's before he won the Role! He had STILL not started smoking yet! In an interview with Mark Lester on a talkshow years later he reminisces about going to the stage prop guys and asking on behalf of himself & the other boys if they could try some of their herbal tobacco for their pipes! They gave them some, and they all went back & smoked up a ton of the stuff getting sicker than hell when they had to return to the set! Jack would celebrate his 15th birthday on the set of Oliver. It took over One year to film! By the end of filming, Jack had indeed started to drink, but only enough to help him sleep, & he had started smoking cigarettes by then as well. His Birthday was a couple of days after mine. 9/30/1952! By the time he was 18 he had a serious drinking problem, and ego to match, but he WAS NOT, & Never Did become Diabetic! Where that crap of yarn came from I don't know! But he would've lost more than his tongue and larynx if he had been! He states he drank for about "13 more years after that" during the 1970's, & after coming to America to star in Sid & Marty Croft's Saturday morning TV Show called H. R. Pufnstuf that I watched religiously for the 2 years it ran! He was 21 when it ended. Already married to a cute little thing, he'd had a crush on the girl since he was 16. They ran into each other again at age 18, & were married when he was 21. She left him in 1985 due to his drinking. When he became sober, he was approximately 35. One of the SWEETEST THINGS I ever read was that back in 1970 - 71, while starring in H. R. PUFNSTUF, Jack would get 2,000 letters every week from crazy, love-struck girls & fans and he said that he actually answered each and every single letter, acknowledging the writer, because he thought it was part of the duties, and that you were supposed to. And I honestly believed him. He said 'no matter how tired I was, I made sure to answer every one!' Wow! Stellar Man! Very impressed! Sadly, that mouth cancer returned, after he underwent radiation treatment for it in 2002. The only symptom he ever had was an earache! But he takes full responsibility for all his actions, and actually was a pretty damn happy man after he quit drinking. He had a great life by his account, but was so incredibly modest, even to the end, as to why him? How did he come to get the part? OMG! I rewatched several scenes he did, & he is so natural, and easy going in his roles. Very accomplished, naturally! The way he speaks, his facial expressions, & little nuances. I think he would've been a great Actor if he'd not become the Alcoholic. He said something similar. How Drinking turned him into the "Artful Dodger". He loved life. He was very modest. An extraordinary actor so young. And sadly, a very young man when he died. In the end, all his food & drinks came in a liquefied container that hooked to his side and went in through a tube. He could no longer talk after removal of his tongue and voice box. If you ever get the chance, watch the interview (its 11:?? Minutes long) from prior to 2002, by a British Talkshow host, on his come back role on stage in London. His voice sounds very hard to understand. Like part of his tongue may have already been missing. He's very gaunt, thin, much older looking than his age. His eyes are tired, but sparkly. He laughs with ease. Very calm, polite, & easy going. When he died, I did not recognize him at all! His face. His beautiful face and those eyes. I couldn't see it. He was swollen. Nose was huge. Cheeks inflated. Chin was out of proportion. I don't know what Mouth cancer does to a person. But because his did come back, even after he had everything removed, I can only assume Cancer is a cruel bitch to those who give it their all! I don't think he deserved that. I don't want to remember him that way. I do want to listen to at least one of the 3 albums he made, and locate some of that horrible old H. R. Pufnstuf episodes, because Jack was absolutely adorable in it, and looked great in American clothes!! I'd also loved to know what Phil Collins remembers about Jack! And someone tell me please, how the one person who couldn't act, dance, play or sing, turns out to be the ONLY one still alive & working? Get that! I so miss the Great & legendary (Sir - Right?) Oliver Reed! Wow! An amazing Actor! Wasn't he knighted? Also, damn near 1/2 the cast of men all died of heart attacks between ages 57 & 63!! Don't drink the water over there! ( :-) I'm kidding, but what crappy fate!). And Ditch that Horror show music! Sounds like it comes from The Crypt Keeper! That's horrible music to do a synopsis on that amazing cast! Try a bit of the Real sound track. It would be wonderful!
Jack wild,Oliver reed and Mark Lester are the only 3 I know of,I loved h.r pufnstuf as a kid,I remember Oliver reed in the curse of the werewolf and burnt offerings and remember hearing about Mark Lester being the father of one of Jackson's so called kids,c'mon we all know those kids didn't come from Jackson's seed!

The woman?
